Strategic investment response

Metaplanet's investment strategy mirrors that of U.S.-based MicroStrategy, which has significantly integrated Bitcoin into its treasury assets. MicroStrategy currently holds 226,331 BTC, amounting to more than 1% of the total Bitcoin supply. Citing economic challenges like high government debt and the depreciating yen, Metaplanet views Bitcoin as a hedge against economic instability. Following Metaplanet’s latest acquisition, its stock saw a 1% rise on Monday, with an overall increase of 233% since it began investing in Bitcoin.

Rotonda revamps Burrito Wallet with cross-chain swapping, added mainnet and moreRotonda, a subsidiary of South Korean crypto exchange Bithumb, has recently revamped its Web3 wallet Burrito Wallet to make the app more convenient for users, according to Korean news agency Etoday on Wednesday (local time). The newest version features an improved mainnet support system, user interface (UI) and user experience (UX), with a stronger focus on enhancing user convenience and creating a framework for optimal investment.Photo by Shubham’s Web3 on Unsplash“Through this service renewal, we hope that many users will be able to experience a more convenient and unique web3 environment. We will continue to improve our services to establish Burrito Wallet as a user-friendly crypto wallet platform,” the company said.Expanded options for token tradingMost notably, Burrito Wallet now offers cross-chain swapping, which allows users to trade token currencies that have been issued on different mainnets. This is a step up from regular crypto swapping, which only allows the swapping of tokens issued on the same mainnet. Cross-chain swapping between the Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Matic, Avalanche and Arbitrum mainnets is now supported by the deSwap Liquidity Network (DLN), a decentralized cross-chain exchange built by deBridge Finance. DLN facilitates secure and unlimited liquidity transfers across chains with zero slippage.Rotonda added that it would continue to expand its lineup of swap platforms through collaborations with major industry names like Kana Labs, WOOFi and Unizen.Better user experienceThe company also added new features to help users make optimal investments. This includes a new notification bot dubbed “Burrito Chef,” which sends notifications for announcements, updates and events within the app. Users can quickly and conveniently check the insights they need to inform their personal investments and get the most out of the app’s services. On the UI front, a “Home” tab has been added, which provides users with a concise overview at of the most commonly used features like wallet, swap and chat, along with the most popular content. Token rankings by category — such as most swapped tokens and most rising tokens — that were previously available on the “Swap” tab have been moved to the “Home” tab and placed in the foreground of the screen. Rotonda also explained that it aims to provide a more customizable experience by adding more detailed chart features. The wallet also now supports the Sui mainnet, bringing the total number of supported mainnets to 12.This development comes shortly after Rotonda recently launched Burrito Wallet in the Latin American region in a move to expand its global user base.

Japan’s ODX to commence digital securities trading in December

Japan’s ODX to commence digital securities trading in DecemberOsaka Digital Exchange (ODX) is set to commence security token trading with Ichigo’s real estate assets, marking yet another milestone in Japan’s evolving digital asset landscape.Photo by note thanun on UnsplashDecember 25 ‘START’ODX’s Proprietary Trading System (PTS), named “START,” is scheduled to commence operations on Dec. 25, as announced in a Nov. 20 statement. This development follows the approval from Japan’s Financial Service Agency (FSA) on Nov. 16 for ODX’s securities token proprietary trading system.A security token, essentially a digitized version of traditional securities, represents fractional ownership in real-world assets like equity, real estate, or company shares. ODX’s trading system aims to enhance liquidity and funding opportunities for securities token operations within the region, aligning with its broader vision of establishing a digital stock exchange to rival the Tokyo Stock Exchange.Established in 2021 by SBI Holdings and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG), ODX is poised to welcome Ichigo as its inaugural client on the START platform. Ichigo is a Japanese sustainable infrastructure firm based in Tokyo. Real estate is one of the sectors it is involved in, where it specializes in the renovation and improvement of existing buildings.Third security token launchThe real estate company has previously issued two security tokens and now plans to issue a new token, facilitating real estate investment opportunities for individuals. A company statement reveals that the new security token will invest in six strategically located rental residential properties with superior access to the city center. Bloomberg reported on Monday that Ichigo intends to sell approximately $20 million worth of securities backed by property investments, with trading set to commence on Dec. 25.The release of real estate-backed security assets will take place on Progmat, a Japan-regulated digital asset platform established in 2022 by Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) in collaboration with other Japanese banks. Progmat integrates blockchain technology with financial expertise to manage digital assets within the regulatory framework of Japan. As a consequence, MUFG will effectively be acting as custodian and security token issuer as part of this security token offering. SBI Securities will act as the lead underwriter of the project.Security tokens, subject to federal regulations, derive their value from external tradable assets and represent ownership in an enterprise or asset. The introduction of security token trading on ODX has the potential to enhance liquidity and streamline the investment process for individuals. However, with the initial offering of $20 million in securities, it is evident that Japan is cautiously exploring the demand for alternative forms of securities.SBI portfolio companyInitially, Japanese financial services conglomerate SBI Holdings had a 70% stake in ODX, with SMFG holding a 20% equity stake. Investment Bank Daiwa Securities and global financial services group Nomura made up the balance, with each having a 5% equity holding in the business. Those equity stakes have most likely been diluted as in September ODX confirmed that it had accepted equity participation from the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), the largest U.S. options exchange platform, private equity firm Virtu Investments and proprietary trading firm and global market maker Optiver Principal Strategic Investments (PSI).

Myanmar Government in Exile Backs Crypto Bank Launch

Myanmar Government in Exile Backs Crypto Bank LaunchMyanmar is on the cusp of a financial revolution as the National Unity Government (NUG), the country’s exiled shadow government, introduces the Spring Development Bank (SDB), a crypto-based financial institution. With a mission to bestow long-awaited financial freedom and digitized sophistication upon the nation’s citizens, the SDB aspires to reshape Myanmar’s financial landscape.Built on PolygonThe bank derives its name from the Spring Revolution, an opposition movement that bravely challenges the ruling military junta. The goal of the SDB is to bring “freedom and democracy to the 55 million citizens of Myanmar,” a lofty ambition that reflects the NUG’s determination to empower its people through innovative means.Constructed on the Polygon Network, the SDB aims to revolutionize domestic and international payments, making them faster and more efficient. But the bank’s vision extends beyond just payments. Following a recent press conference, bank officials revealed plans to offer a diverse range of financial products, including fixed deposits, currency exchange services, cross-country remittances, and even digital gold savings options.Reaching the Burmese diasporaNotably, the SDB’s reach extends beyond Myanmar’s borders to the two-million-strong Burmese diaspora residing abroad. This diaspora frequently sends money back to their homeland, but the current remittance fees can soar as high as 30%. The bank intends to alleviate this burden, reducing the costs associated with sending money back to Myanmar. The Spring Development Bank operates under the licensing and regulation of the Interim Central Bank of Myanmar, which is under the control of the NUG. U Calvin, the bank’s CEO, emphasized that this launch marks the initial step towards restoring financial independence to Myanmar. The bank’s emergence comes amid Myanmar’s complex relationship with cryptocurrencies. While there is no specific legislation addressing cryptocurrencies, the Central Bank of Myanmar issued a ban on them in 2020, and the military junta later proposed a cybersecurity law that criminalized their usage in January 2022.Photo by Dan Gold on UnsplashJuly soft launchA soft launch of the SDB is scheduled for July 22, with 1,000 private beta users and 100 relationship managers. The bank expects to achieve a full launch in late August, with the goal of attracting 100,000 active users within the first six months of operation.Despite these regulatory challenges, Myanmar’s people have turned to cryptocurrencies as an escape from their dire financial situation. Since the February 2021 coup, the country’s economy has suffered significantly, with the World Bank estimating an alarming 18% annual contraction. Fading trust in the traditional banking system, controlled by the military, has further crippled the financial market. The Myanmar kyat (MMK) plummeted to an all-time low of 2,200 against the US dollar (USD) in September 2021, down from 1,330 in February 2020 (currently 1 USD = 2,100 MMK).The SDB’s arrival signals a glimmer of hope amidst these trying times, offering a beacon of financial opportunity for the citizens of Myanmar. With the support of the NUG, the bank is looking to take an innovative approach to better serve Burmese citizens, both at home and abroad.
