$10 million fund

The company announced the initiative by way of a press release published by PR Newswire on Monday. This strategic move is part of Bitget’s Blockchain4Youth (B4Y) initiative, which has earmarked a $10 million fund for Web3-focused projects.

Bitget revealed that the B4Y initiative kicked off on Nov. 6 and will continue until Dec. 4, coinciding with BUIDL for Web3, India’s multi-chain summit event. This summit, sponsored by Bitget in collaboration with Lumos Labs and BuidlersTribe, provides a platform for Indian startups to showcase their innovative concepts to Bitget as well as prominent venture capitalists.

Nurturing Web3 startups

The core objective of Bitget’s investment initiative is to identify and nurture high-potential projects within the cryptocurrency space, offering them financial support to drive innovation in cutting-edge technologies.

As part of the Blockchain4Youth project, Bitget has committed to deploying $10 million in investments over the next five years. Through complementary research the company has carried out recently, Bitget is likely to have identified that targeting the younger demographic is going to be good for business over the longer term.

Gracy Chen, Managing Director at Bitget, lauded the developing blockchain and crypto sectors in India. Chen emphasized India’s status as a prime investment destination in Asia, citing the country’s abundance of talent and entrepreneurial drive.

BUIDL for Web3

Notably, the BUIDL for Web3 initiative is set to attract a diverse array of developers and founders, celebrating their resilience and creativity. The month-long program will commence by shortlisting over 100 startups, ultimately selecting 10 to present their projects to Bitget and well-known venture capitalists such as Sequoia Capital, Lightspeed Venture and Draper Labs. To facilitate this process, Bitget has established a dedicated portal to receive applications from aspiring startups.

Chen stated:

”India’s resilience and constant advancements towards blockchain and crypto makes it the most wanted place to invest in Asia currently. The talent, the entrepreneurial spirit, it’s everything celebratory and we’re here to empower it. With our Blockchain4Youth, we look forward to accelerating the next big fours of crypto space.”

Strategic investment

The crypto derivatives platform has been active when it comes to investment recently. Last month, it unveiled a $100 million crypto ecosystem fund. Titled the EmpowerX Fund, the initiative was revealed during the company’s fifth anniversary summit held in Singapore.

In April, Bitget invested $20 million into Sei Labs, the development company behind the Sei layer one blockchain. The company has been actively progressing various aspects of the business in 2023. In August it rebranded the BitKeep Wallet to Bitget Wallet following the acquisition of the Singaporean project earlier in the year. Integration of that business had added additional users to its platform such that it exceeded the 20 million user mark.

Bitget’s commitment to investing in the Indian blockchain ecosystem is a testament to the rapidly evolving landscape of crypto innovation in the country. However, India is not its only target market. In July, the firm indicated that it was looking to expand further within the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Animoca Brands ventures into Bitcoin ecosystem

Hong Kong-based game software company Animoca Brands has announced its foray into the Bitcoin industry by endorsing the Opal Foundation, a novel Bitcoin ecosystem protocol. The move involves the Opal Protocol and BLIF token, initiated by Animoca Brands and Darewise, a metaverse technology platform. On April 30, Animoca Brands disclosed its plans to become the "largest Web3 ecosystem" for gaming, education and culture built on Bitcoin. The company aims to establish the Opal Protocol and BLIF token as key components of this ecosystem.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashBLIF token and Opal ProtocolThe BLIF token, also known as the Opal Protocol Runes token, is hailed by Animoca as a means to enable a "true digital life" on Bitcoin. According to Animoca's executive chairman and co-founder Yat Siu, Bitcoin is now primed for Web3, transitioning from a mere store of value to a store of culture for the Web3 age. Six of Animoca Brands' portfolio companies have already joined as Genesis members, signaling a strong start for the Opal Protocol. Additionally, all future Bitcoin-based projects from Animoca Brands will collaborate with the Opal Foundation. Launched in 2024, the Opal protocol positions itself as a decentralized ecosystem protocol on Bitcoin, powered by BLIF. Its litepaper describes it as a seamless blend of virtual and real-life experiences, offering digital extensions of reality across various domains such as banking, entertainment, education and social interactions. The launch date of the Opal protocol and BLIF airdrop is yet to be announced, but Opal's Telegram group has hinted at its impending arrival. Despite not being operational, Opal's X profile already boasts over 270,000 subscribers. Strategic partnershipAnimoca Brands is hailed as the first strategic launch partner for the Opal Foundation. The company's collaboration aims to integrate its vision into the open Opal protocol on Bitcoin and ordinals. Animoca's venture into Bitcoin coincides with the recent trading debut of spot Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds (ETF) in Hong Kong. However, the initial trading volumes of these ETFs were relatively modest compared to spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in the United States in January 2024.

Spot BTC, ETH ETFs to commence trading on April 30 in Hong Kong

The first tranche of spot Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have been officially approved to start trading in Hong Kong on April 30. Announcement from regulatorHong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) announced the official approval of the first batch of spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs on April 24 via a press release seen by CoinTelegraph. The regulator first provided outline approval for these products on April 15. Additionally, some of the fund management firms themselves have come out to outline product trading commencement at the end of the month. The first batch of approved Hong Kong-based ETFs include China Asset Management’s (ChinaAMC) Bitcoin and Ether-based ETFs.  In a press release, the firm verified that its products will begin trading on April 30. HashKey Capital and Bosera Asset Management have partnered to offer similar spot products. A spokesperson for HashKey told Bloomberg that they’re ready to commence trading of the product at the end of the month.Photo by Ruslan Bardash on UnsplashIn-kind vs. cash-only approachHarvest Global Investments is the third fund manager that intends to launch such a product offering. The launch of these three spot Bitcoin and Ether-based ETFs on April 30 signals a new era for digital asset investment in Hong Kong. Unlike their counterparts in the U.S., which rely on a cash creation model, these ETFs in Hong Kong embrace an in-kind creation mechanism. This approach holds the potential to significantly boost assets under management (AUM) and trading volume, as highlighted by Bloomberg ETF analyst Rebecca Sin. The unique dynamics of Hong Kong's ETF creation model present an opportunity for market growth and innovation, positioning the region as a key player in the global digital asset landscape. By providing a regulated framework for retail and institutional investors, along with the ease of converting digital assets into fully regulated ETFs, ChinaAMC aims to cater to a growing demand for such offerings. China Asset Management’s Head of Digital Assets, Thomas Zhu, emphasized in the firm’s press release the in-kind creation feature. Potential fee warAs the ETF market in Hong Kong gains momentum, competition could result in downward pressure on fees. With issuers vying to offer the most competitive fees to attract customers, the stage is set for a potential battle of pricing strategies. Harvest, for instance, has already entered the fray with a full fee waiver and the lowest fee at 0.3% after the waiver, Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart outlined on the X social media platform. This competitive landscape bodes well for investors, with fees for the first ETFs proving to be lower than expected, as noted by Eric Balchunas, senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg. All eyes will be on the performance and impact of these financial products relative to the crypto market in the Asian region and further afield.

UAE Emirate Launches Digital Asset Oasis Free Zone

UAE Emirate Launches Digital Asset Oasis Free ZoneRas Al Khaimah (RAK), one of the seven Emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has launched the RAK Digital Assets Oasis (RAK DAO), a free zone tailored exclusively for digital and virtual asset enterprises.Photo by Mostafa Ashraf Mostafa on UnsplashFrom conception to launchThe Emirate has been working on the RAK DAO project for some time, having enacted a law to establish the free zone in March of this year. In July it emerged that RAK Digital Assets Oasis had partnered with the HBAR Foundation, the project team behind the Hedera public ledger, with HBAR extending funding and resources to fuel the growth of free zone members.Having put in the hard yards to establish the free zone, RAK DAO, under the patronage of RAK Emirate ruler His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, had its launch event on Thursday. The event included a range of industry speakers including Ledger Chairman and CEO Pascal Gauthier, Animoca Brands Co-Founder and Executive Chairman Yat Siu, DFINITY Founder Dominic Williams, and TON Foundation President Steve Yun, among others.During the event, DAO creation and governance platform DeXe DAO Studio announced its partnership with RAK DAO.With an eye towards keeping the RAK Emirate ahead of the technological curve, RAK DAO aims for the digital assets oasis to become the world’s first free zone dedicated solely to digital and virtual asset companies. While RAK DAO is initially expected to focus on non-financial activities, it holds the potential to introduce financial activities at a later stage.Nurturing Web3 innovationThe mandate of RAK DAO is to provide robust support to companies engaged in cutting-edge technologies. This includes but is not limited to ventures in the metaverse, blockchain, utility tokens, virtual asset wallets, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), decentralized applications (DApps), and various other Web3-related businesses.Entrepreneurs who establish their presence within the confines of this free zone will be granted the privilege of retaining 100% ownership of their enterprises. Moreover, they will benefit from innovative tax schemes and a regulatory framework that is tailored to the unique demands of the digital asset industry.Progressive approach to Web3The UAE, as a nation, has actively pursued and courted crypto and blockchain firms by cultivating a progressive regulatory environment. Dubai led the charge by introducing a virtual assets law and establishing the Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority.RAK is not the first Emirate to establish a free zone that caters to crypto and Web3 business within the UAE. The Emirate of Abu Dhabi has established the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) while the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) established its own financial regulator in Dubai, paving the way for attractive free zones for digital asset businesses. The Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) even took its commitment a step further by inaugurating its headquarters in The Sandbox in May 2022.Dubai has issued operational licenses to several crypto firms, including prominent names like Binance, Crypto.com, and Nomura’s Laser Digital and digital asset custodian Komainu. These licenses have further solidified the UAE’s position as a preferred destination for crypto, blockchain, and Web3 enterprises.
