$10 million fund

The company announced the initiative by way of a press release published by PR Newswire on Monday. This strategic move is part of Bitget’s Blockchain4Youth (B4Y) initiative, which has earmarked a $10 million fund for Web3-focused projects.

Bitget revealed that the B4Y initiative kicked off on Nov. 6 and will continue until Dec. 4, coinciding with BUIDL for Web3, India’s multi-chain summit event. This summit, sponsored by Bitget in collaboration with Lumos Labs and BuidlersTribe, provides a platform for Indian startups to showcase their innovative concepts to Bitget as well as prominent venture capitalists.

Nurturing Web3 startups

The core objective of Bitget’s investment initiative is to identify and nurture high-potential projects within the cryptocurrency space, offering them financial support to drive innovation in cutting-edge technologies.

As part of the Blockchain4Youth project, Bitget has committed to deploying $10 million in investments over the next five years. Through complementary research the company has carried out recently, Bitget is likely to have identified that targeting the younger demographic is going to be good for business over the longer term.

Gracy Chen, Managing Director at Bitget, lauded the developing blockchain and crypto sectors in India. Chen emphasized India’s status as a prime investment destination in Asia, citing the country’s abundance of talent and entrepreneurial drive.

BUIDL for Web3

Notably, the BUIDL for Web3 initiative is set to attract a diverse array of developers and founders, celebrating their resilience and creativity. The month-long program will commence by shortlisting over 100 startups, ultimately selecting 10 to present their projects to Bitget and well-known venture capitalists such as Sequoia Capital, Lightspeed Venture and Draper Labs. To facilitate this process, Bitget has established a dedicated portal to receive applications from aspiring startups.

Chen stated:

”India’s resilience and constant advancements towards blockchain and crypto makes it the most wanted place to invest in Asia currently. The talent, the entrepreneurial spirit, it’s everything celebratory and we’re here to empower it. With our Blockchain4Youth, we look forward to accelerating the next big fours of crypto space.”

Strategic investment

The crypto derivatives platform has been active when it comes to investment recently. Last month, it unveiled a $100 million crypto ecosystem fund. Titled the EmpowerX Fund, the initiative was revealed during the company’s fifth anniversary summit held in Singapore.

In April, Bitget invested $20 million into Sei Labs, the development company behind the Sei layer one blockchain. The company has been actively progressing various aspects of the business in 2023. In August it rebranded the BitKeep Wallet to Bitget Wallet following the acquisition of the Singaporean project earlier in the year. Integration of that business had added additional users to its platform such that it exceeded the 20 million user mark.

Bitget’s commitment to investing in the Indian blockchain ecosystem is a testament to the rapidly evolving landscape of crypto innovation in the country. However, India is not its only target market. In July, the firm indicated that it was looking to expand further within the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

OKX collaborates with Polygon Labs on layer-2 network launch

OKX collaborates with Polygon Labs on layer-2 network launchSeychelles-incorporated OKX, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, has collaborated with blockchain development firm Polygon Labs to unveil the testnet for its latest zero-knowledge layer-2 network, named “X1.”Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashIntroducing “X1”The company announced initial details on X1 via a press release published on Tuesday. This Ethereum-based ZK network has been constructed using the Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK), with OKX playing a pivotal role as a core contributor to the CDK. Substantial engineering resources are being invested by OKX to strengthen the Ethereum scaling solution. The new network will serve to bolster the utility of OKX's native token, OKB. OKB will be used for X1’s gas fees. There has been a lot of chatter about the utility of exchange tokens following the collapse of FTX, as that platform was over-reliant on its native token in propping up the exchange. Similarly, critics are speculating that a comparable dynamic may be at play at Binance, relative to its native token BNB.Likely buoyed by news of this development, OKB observed a 10% unit price increase on Tuesday. However, that move has retraced downwards in the meantime.ZK proof technologyX1 has been designed with ZK proofs, a method through which one party can convince another that a particular claim is true without disclosing details of the claim itself. In this way, X1 ensures high security and scalability while mitigating transaction costs. The network seamlessly aligns with Ethereum, facilitating the secure deployment of EVM-based dApps and connectivity with a wide array of smart contracts, wallets and tools. OKX underscores X1’s status as its new native network.Chief Innovation Officer of OKX, Jason Lau, expressed optimism about X1, deeming it integral to the firm’s efforts in guiding users into the realm of Web3. Lau emphasized the scalability and accessibility of X1, especially for developers who can leverage it to construct user-friendly Web3 applications while maintaining interoperability with other networks. The collaboration with Polygon Labs marks another milestone in the evolution of Polygon’s CDK. Launched in August, the CDK enables the development of layer-2 blockchains on Ethereum, emphasizing zero-knowledge proofs. Networks deployed using the CDK gain the ability to connect to a shared ZK bridge, fostering interoperability.Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon, underscored the significance of X1’s adoption of Polygon CDK technology, envisioning a future where CDK-deployed chains interoperate and coexist within a larger network of ZK-powered layer 2s in the Polygon CDK ecosystem. The CDK has gained traction, with various Layer 2s, including Immutable zkEVM, IDEX, Palm Network and Astar zkEVM, currently in development using this technology.Industry trendA trend is developing among crypto exchange platforms and their involvement in establishing layer two networks. Earlier this year, U.S. crypto platform Coinbase introduced the Base network, an Ethereum layer-2 network that focuses on offering a safe, low-cost and developer-friendly mechanism to build on-chain.Last week, it emerged that another leading U.S.-based crypto platform, Kraken, is on the lookout for a development partner to enable it in building out its own layer-2 blockchain network. According to those reports, it’s understood that Kraken is considering partnering with Polygon Labs, Matter Labs or the Nil Foundation. As this OKX-Polygon Labs collaboration progresses, the industry will continue to observe how X1, with its innovative technology stack and seamless integration with Ethereum, contributes towards broader Web3 development.

Chinese Central Bank Official Emphasizes Need for Digital Yuan Retail Payments

Chinese Central Bank Official Emphasizes Need for Digital Yuan Retail PaymentsA senior official from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) has underscored the importance of making China’s digital yuan, commonly referred to as the e-CNY, accessible in all retail payment scenarios within China.Photo by Eric Prouzet on UnsplashStreamlining retail e-CNY paymentsThe remarks were delivered by Changchun Mu, Head of the Digital Currency Research Institute, during a trade forum in Beijing. Mu emphasized the need for standardizing QR codes in payment systems, particularly those dominated by giants like WeChat Pay and Alipay.Local media reported on Sunday that the central bank official highlighted that various wallet providers, including WeChat, Alipay, commercial banks with mobile banking apps, and other payment apps associated with e-CNY operations, must remain vigilant about complying with relevant financial regulations and obtaining the necessary licenses. He stressed that the initial step in this process should involve the adoption of the digital yuan as the preferred payment method for all retail transactions.Standardizing QR code paymentsMu explained that in the short term, authorities can start by unifying QR code standards on a technical level to achieve barcode interoperability. In the long run, he suggested that they will steadily implement the upgrade of payment tools. The move towards standardizing QR code payments aligns with the central bank’s commitment from the previous year to promote universal QR payment codes. This initiative aims to allow consumers to make payments by scanning a unified barcode. Currently, QR code payment systems are widely prevalent in China, with WeChat Pay and Alipay being dominant players. The PBOC has been actively testing the e-CNY, having introduced a pilot app in January 2022. The digital yuan pilot programs, initiated in late 2019, have expanded to encompass at least 26 locations across 17 provincial-level cities and regions, including major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Suzhou, according to state media Xinhua. The extent of China’s promotion of its digital yuan has been unmatched despite the fact that most central banks globally have had ongoing central bank digital currency-related (CBDC) projects open for a number of years already.Recent months have seen the launch of a whole host of initiatives to further the use of the CBDC. These initiatives have included integration of the currency into the education system in Jiangsu province, the installation of digital yuan ATMs in Hainan, among many other such projects, and paying state employees with the currency in Changshu. That said, despite these efforts, widespread adoption of the e-CNY remains a work in progress.Bringing about e-CNY integrationMu also emphasized that the existing interbank payment and settlement systems function effectively, indicating that there is no immediate need to replace them with the CBDC system. Instead, he suggested that seamless integration could be achieved by ensuring comprehensive interoperability between the e-CNY and existing electronic payment tools and commercial bank deposit systems. Moreover, at a wholesale level, Mu proposed the use of the digital yuan for settlement within the financial market infrastructure. Smart contracts could also be leveraged for such activities, thereby enhancing efficiency in wholesale payments.Mu’s remarks underscore the Chinese central bank’s determination in advancing the development and adoption of the digital yuan while ensuring it remains integrated into the existing financial ecosystem.
