$10 million fund

The company announced the initiative by way of a press release published by PR Newswire on Monday. This strategic move is part of Bitget’s Blockchain4Youth (B4Y) initiative, which has earmarked a $10 million fund for Web3-focused projects.

Bitget revealed that the B4Y initiative kicked off on Nov. 6 and will continue until Dec. 4, coinciding with BUIDL for Web3, India’s multi-chain summit event. This summit, sponsored by Bitget in collaboration with Lumos Labs and BuidlersTribe, provides a platform for Indian startups to showcase their innovative concepts to Bitget as well as prominent venture capitalists.

Nurturing Web3 startups

The core objective of Bitget’s investment initiative is to identify and nurture high-potential projects within the cryptocurrency space, offering them financial support to drive innovation in cutting-edge technologies.

As part of the Blockchain4Youth project, Bitget has committed to deploying $10 million in investments over the next five years. Through complementary research the company has carried out recently, Bitget is likely to have identified that targeting the younger demographic is going to be good for business over the longer term.

Gracy Chen, Managing Director at Bitget, lauded the developing blockchain and crypto sectors in India. Chen emphasized India’s status as a prime investment destination in Asia, citing the country’s abundance of talent and entrepreneurial drive.

BUIDL for Web3

Notably, the BUIDL for Web3 initiative is set to attract a diverse array of developers and founders, celebrating their resilience and creativity. The month-long program will commence by shortlisting over 100 startups, ultimately selecting 10 to present their projects to Bitget and well-known venture capitalists such as Sequoia Capital, Lightspeed Venture and Draper Labs. To facilitate this process, Bitget has established a dedicated portal to receive applications from aspiring startups.

Chen stated:

”India’s resilience and constant advancements towards blockchain and crypto makes it the most wanted place to invest in Asia currently. The talent, the entrepreneurial spirit, it’s everything celebratory and we’re here to empower it. With our Blockchain4Youth, we look forward to accelerating the next big fours of crypto space.”

Strategic investment

The crypto derivatives platform has been active when it comes to investment recently. Last month, it unveiled a $100 million crypto ecosystem fund. Titled the EmpowerX Fund, the initiative was revealed during the company’s fifth anniversary summit held in Singapore.

In April, Bitget invested $20 million into Sei Labs, the development company behind the Sei layer one blockchain. The company has been actively progressing various aspects of the business in 2023. In August it rebranded the BitKeep Wallet to Bitget Wallet following the acquisition of the Singaporean project earlier in the year. Integration of that business had added additional users to its platform such that it exceeded the 20 million user mark.

Bitget’s commitment to investing in the Indian blockchain ecosystem is a testament to the rapidly evolving landscape of crypto innovation in the country. However, India is not its only target market. In July, the firm indicated that it was looking to expand further within the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Japan’s ODX to commence digital securities trading in December

Japan’s ODX to commence digital securities trading in DecemberOsaka Digital Exchange (ODX) is set to commence security token trading with Ichigo’s real estate assets, marking yet another milestone in Japan’s evolving digital asset landscape.Photo by note thanun on UnsplashDecember 25 ‘START’ODX’s Proprietary Trading System (PTS), named “START,” is scheduled to commence operations on Dec. 25, as announced in a Nov. 20 statement. This development follows the approval from Japan’s Financial Service Agency (FSA) on Nov. 16 for ODX’s securities token proprietary trading system.A security token, essentially a digitized version of traditional securities, represents fractional ownership in real-world assets like equity, real estate, or company shares. ODX’s trading system aims to enhance liquidity and funding opportunities for securities token operations within the region, aligning with its broader vision of establishing a digital stock exchange to rival the Tokyo Stock Exchange.Established in 2021 by SBI Holdings and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG), ODX is poised to welcome Ichigo as its inaugural client on the START platform. Ichigo is a Japanese sustainable infrastructure firm based in Tokyo. Real estate is one of the sectors it is involved in, where it specializes in the renovation and improvement of existing buildings.Third security token launchThe real estate company has previously issued two security tokens and now plans to issue a new token, facilitating real estate investment opportunities for individuals. A company statement reveals that the new security token will invest in six strategically located rental residential properties with superior access to the city center. Bloomberg reported on Monday that Ichigo intends to sell approximately $20 million worth of securities backed by property investments, with trading set to commence on Dec. 25.The release of real estate-backed security assets will take place on Progmat, a Japan-regulated digital asset platform established in 2022 by Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) in collaboration with other Japanese banks. Progmat integrates blockchain technology with financial expertise to manage digital assets within the regulatory framework of Japan. As a consequence, MUFG will effectively be acting as custodian and security token issuer as part of this security token offering. SBI Securities will act as the lead underwriter of the project.Security tokens, subject to federal regulations, derive their value from external tradable assets and represent ownership in an enterprise or asset. The introduction of security token trading on ODX has the potential to enhance liquidity and streamline the investment process for individuals. However, with the initial offering of $20 million in securities, it is evident that Japan is cautiously exploring the demand for alternative forms of securities.SBI portfolio companyInitially, Japanese financial services conglomerate SBI Holdings had a 70% stake in ODX, with SMFG holding a 20% equity stake. Investment Bank Daiwa Securities and global financial services group Nomura made up the balance, with each having a 5% equity holding in the business. Those equity stakes have most likely been diluted as in September ODX confirmed that it had accepted equity participation from the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), the largest U.S. options exchange platform, private equity firm Virtu Investments and proprietary trading firm and global market maker Optiver Principal Strategic Investments (PSI).

OKX to shut down mining-related services

Leading crypto exchange platform OKX has disclosed plans to discontinue its mining pool services, marking a strategic shift for the platform.Photo by engin akyurt on UnsplashService shutdown within one monthThe move, outlined by the firm in a notification to platform users on Friday, involves ceasing new user registrations effective immediately. Existing users will be granted access to the mining pool until Feb. 25. All mining pool-related services on OKX will be completely halted by Feb. 26. Mining Pools data reveals that OKX holds the 36th position among the top 70 bitcoin-focused mining pools, boasting a total hash rate slightly exceeding 496 TH/s. The decision to phase out mining pool services was attributed to "business adjustments," as communicated by OKX, though further details were not provided regarding the specific nature of these adjustments. Previously, OKX's mining pool supported various proof-of-work cryptocurrencies and offered staking services. However, over recent years, many supported assets had been terminated. Presently, the website only displays bitcoin, litecoin and ethereum classic pool services. Once accounted for 5% of all BTC blocks minedOKX's bitcoin mining pool had once accounted for around 5% of the blocks mined on the network. However, a setback occurred on October 16, 2020, when the crypto exchange temporarily suspended withdrawals due to one of its private key holders “cooperating with a public security bureau in investigations.” This led to a significant drop in hashpower connected to the pool, from 9,000 PH/s to 20 PH/s. The pool's current 528 TH/s now represents less than 0.0001% of bitcoin’s total hash rate. Industry trend formingThis strategic move by OKX reflects the evolving landscape of the crypto industry and the challenges faced by mining pools, particularly in the context of regulatory and operational adjustments within the market. The decision may even amount to a formative trend, given that global crypto exchange platform rival KuCoin made a similar move back in August. At the time, KuCoin outlined its plans to temporarily suspend its bitcoin and litecoin mining pools. Although it suggested a temporary halt to such services, there was no indication of when such mining-related services would resume. A company spokesperson stated:“We will see if it is needed to restart based on the market and users’ demand in the future.” Bitcoin halving pressuresOKX’s decision to discontinue mining pool services comes ahead of bitcoin's anticipated fourth halving in April, which is expected to reduce miner rewards from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC. The halving is casting a shadow over the mining sector. Miners' business cost per bitcoin mined is going to increase significantly. Some industry commentators speculate that the break-even point for miners will reach an unsustainable level. NASDAQ-listed Riot Blockchain, in particular, is being singled out as potentially being susceptible due to its cost structure. Miners have had a difficult couple of years, working their way through the bear market component of the last market cycle. That period saw leading miner Core Scientific declare bankruptcy. The company has since restructured and has been relisted on the NASDAQ.
