New Head of Asia appointment

In a press release published by the New York-headquartered firm on Tuesday, Hivemind outlined that alongside this significant Asian expansion, the company has appointed Stanley Huo as Head of Asia. Huo is a seasoned investment banker with over 15 years of experience at prestigious institutions like China Renaissance, UBS, Citi and BAML across Asia and Europe.

Huo expressed his excitement, stating: “I’m thrilled to be joining Hivemind at such a transformative period. The intersection of traditional finance and burgeoning digital asset technologies in Hong Kong presents unmatched opportunities and I’m looking forward to leading our initiatives in this vibrant ecosystem.”

Identifying an opportunity

Hivemind Capital Partners had nothing but praise for Hong Kong as a significant crypto hub. The company highlighted the distinct advantages that come with operating in the city-state, including a well-established ecosystem that facilitates access to traditional financial infrastructure, capital-raising opportunities and the exploration of blockchain-related innovations.

Huo told The Block: “It was very interesting to see that the Hong Kong government welcomes all the Web3 capital and talents… They want to build up a Web3 center.”

Matt Zhang, Founder and Managing Partner of Hivemind, is equally enthusiastic about the Hong Kong expansion, stating:

“Our expansion into Hong Kong not only represents our firm’s growth, but our commitment to being at the center of financial innovation and technology. With Stanley leading our business in Asia, we are positioned to significantly contribute to, and influence, the evolving narrative of blockchain technology and digital assets in the region.”

Zhang is a speaker at Hong Kong Fintech Week later this week, where he will participate in a panel discussion titled “The Future of Stablecoins: Exploring Virtual Asset Payment Infrastructure and the Rise of Non-USD Stablecoin Frameworks.” He founded Hivemind in November 2021, with a view towards deploying capital within verticals such as crypto infrastructure, virtual worlds, programmable money and blockchain protocols.

Hivemind has been on a significant growth trajectory, as evidenced by its recent launch of a $1.5 billion investment vehicle, with available funds still waiting to be deployed. Additionally, the company introduced the Liquid Opportunity Fund, a $300 million crypto fund, earlier in the year, securing $60 million for the fund in June.

Following a regional trend

The company’s move to Hong Kong aligns with the broader trend of cryptocurrency firms recognizing the region’s potential and considering it for their expansion plans. Notably, Zodia Custody, a digital asset custodian backed by Standard Chartered, recently announced its launch in Hong Kong.

While Hong Kong has actively positioned itself as a hub for Web3 companies, boasting recent developments like the introduction of retail trading for licensed crypto exchanges in August, it has also faced challenges. The city recently witnessed the largest Ponzi scheme in its history, involving the embezzlement of approximately $166 million from JPEX crypto exchange users. The investigation into this incident is still ongoing.

Gate Ventures, Boon Ventures launching $20M crypto fund

Gate Ventures, the investment arm of Gate.io, a global cryptocurrency exchange with its origins in China, has gotten together with Thailand’s Boon Ventures and Movement Labs, to launch a $20 million fund aimed at supporting projects that utilize the Move programming language, as well as interoperability with the Ethereum ecosystem.  Accelerating Move-based blockchain adoptionMovement Labs is a developer of modular Move-based blockchains. A press release published on PR Newswire on Oct. 13 outlined that the firms intend to direct the fund towards a number of key areas. Firstly, its objective will be to accelerate the adoption of Move-based blockchain solutions. Secondly, the fund will be directed towards supporting projects which enhance security and performance in decentralized networks. A further objective is the extension of support to projects which bridge Move and Ethereum virtual machine (EVM) ecosystems. The final key objective has been set out to drive innovation in Web3 infrastructure and applications. Gate Ventures Managing Partner Kevin Yang claimed that the $20 million fund “marks a significant milestone in [the company’s] mission to drive forward-thinking solutions in the Web3 ecosystem.” Yang added that in collaborating with Movement Labs and other forward-thinking entities within the Web3 sector, the company is “paving the way for the future of decentralized technology.”Photo by Nino Steffen on UnsplashMentorship & hackathonsWeb3 startups supported by the fund will be given access to a mentorship program, while hackathon events will also be organized. Furthermore, there will be an opportunity for selected startups to participate in a research grant program relative to blockchain interoperability. Gate Ventures garnered attention within the industry recently, with the announcement in August that it had entered into a partnership with Abu Dhabi’s Blockchain Center. That collaboration has led to the establishment of Falcon Gate Ventures, a $100 million Web3 innovation fund.Last month, the company participated in the Series A funding round of Kroma, an Ethereum layer-2 network project. While interoperability is singled out as a key objective of this fund, Movement Labs has been working towards that goal recently. Last week, the firm appointed an omnichain interoperability protocol project, LayerZero, as an interoperability provider. It’s envisaged that the partnership will enable developers using the Move programming language to create decentralized applications that can run across various blockchain networks, including EVM. While Facebook parent company Meta developed the Move programming language, Movement Labs has worked towards developing its use further. Earlier in the year, Movement partnered with Aptos Labs, a firm that was founded by ex-Meta employees that has built out a network based on Move, in another effort to bring about blockchain interoperability relative to EVM and non-EVM networks. A spokesperson for Movement Labs told Cointelegraph that “the ultimate goal is to create an integrated blockchain environment where developers can build across platforms without sacrificing security or performance.” Back in April, Movement raised $38 million in a Series A financing round which was led by Polychain Capital. At the time, Movement Labs Co-Founder Rushi Manche said that he and his co-founders “started building Movement to increase the velocity of innovation in crypto where the next Facebook can be built on-chain by developers who do not have the resources for large development teams and expensive auditors.”

OKX expands Middle East presence through Dubai license approval

OKX Middle East Fintech FZE, the Dubai-based subsidiary of cryptocurrency exchange OKX, announced on Tuesday that the company has successfully obtained a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license from the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), signaling its entry into the Middle East market.Photo by David Rodrigo on UnsplashNon-operational licenseThis newly acquired license positions OKX Middle East to offer spot services and spot pairs to institutional and qualified retail customers in the region. However, it should be noted that the operational aspect of the license is pending. The company stated that it will remain non-operational until all remaining conditions and select localization requirements are fully satisfied, a process anticipated to conclude in the coming weeks. Once operational, OKX Middle East will have the green light to provide regulated VASP services, facilitate AED deposits and withdrawals and introduce spot trading pairs. The move, outlined in a blog post published by the company, comes months after the subsidiary received a preparatory license from VARA, underlining its commitment to complying with regulatory standards and expanding in the Middle East. Rifad Mahasneh, the general manager for the MENA Region at OKX, expressed optimism about the region's potential, stating: "The MENA region holds immense potential to become a hub of excellence for Web3 and virtual assets. We eagerly anticipate the chance to further enhance the already flourishing ecosystem throughout the region." Global hubThis strategic move aligns with the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) goal to establish itself as a global hub for the cryptocurrency industry. VARA, formed in March 2022, was tasked with regulating the emerging virtual asset sector in Dubai. The regulatory framework gained momentum when Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai's prime minister and ruler, approved a new virtual assets law in March 2022, providing a legal foundation for the crypto industry in the city. Dubai's proactive stance towards regulating the cryptocurrency industry has attracted several major players, including Crypto.com, Ripple, Binance and Bybit, all securing crypto licenses from Dubai's regulator. OKX Middle East joins the likes of TOKO FZE and Trek Labs Ltd FZE in obtaining a license for exchange services. Tim Byun, the Global Head of Government Relations at OKX, emphasized the significance of this license in the company's journey towards a trustless system. "This license was a crucial step for OKX as we move from a trust-based system to one that is trustless and empowers users to take control of their financial future," he stated. Byun expressed excitement about contributing to the development of Dubai's crypto and Web3 ecosystem, highlighting the importance of the market. It's noteworthy that OKX, already regulated in the Bahamas, currently restricts customers from the United States due to regulatory issues. The expansion into the Middle East represents a strategic move for OKX to tap into the growing crypto market in the region and aligns with the broader trend of cryptocurrency exchanges expanding their global footprint.
