10.1% year-on-year increase

According to reports published in recent days in local media, as of September 2023, the country boasts 17.91 million crypto investors, marking a noteworthy 0.67% uptick compared to the previous month of August, which registered 17.79 million individuals.

Over the span of a year, from September 2022 to September 2023, the Southeast Asian nation witnessed an influx of approximately 1.64 million new crypto investors, showcasing a remarkable 10.1% increase from the 16.27 million reported in September 2022.

Emerging from a slowdown

While this growth signals a positive trend, a noteworthy observation pertains to the deceleration in crypto investor growth from October 2022 to August 2023. The data reveals that during this period, the increase in the number of crypto investors in Indonesia never exceeded 1%. This slowdown can be attributed to the global crypto market’s trend characterized by uncertainty and a downward trajectory.

Tirta Karma Senjaya, Head of the Bappebti Commodity Futures Trading Development and Development Bureau, comments on this phenomenon, stating, “Growth in the number of crypto investors in Indonesia continues to increase, but investors are still looking for the right time to buy crypto.”

Furthermore, Bappebti highlights a reduction in the value of crypto transactions in Indonesia for September 2023, amounting to IDR 7.96 trillion ($502 million). This marks a decrease of 25.2% when compared to the preceding month, which recorded a total of IDR 10.64 trillion. In contrast to the previous year, this decline reflects a substantial 54.7% contraction from the September 2022 figure of IDR 17.57 trillion.

Yudhono Rawis, CEO of Tokocrypto, an Indonesian crypto exchange platform, suggests that global conditions, including economic and regulatory uncertainties, have significantly impacted the crypto market’s evolution, both within Indonesia and worldwide. Despite the recent slowdown in growth, Indonesia’s crypto market continues to exhibit considerable potential.

Bitcoin resurgence

Yudhono remains optimistic, anticipating that the growth and trading volumes of crypto assets in October will surpass previous records. This optimism stems from the surge in Bitcoin prices, which soared in excess of $35,000 (approximately IDR 556.5 million) towards the end of October. This milestone marks Bitcoin’s highest point in nearly 18 months and signifies a mounting interest in the crypto market on a global scale.

In a statement to Voice of Indonesia, Yudhono stated:

“We are confident that the growth of investors and transactions will continue to increase. The increase in Bitcoin prices and increasingly strong interest in the crypto market in general are indications that these digital assets are increasingly accepted by society. We hope that this trend will continue and bring benefits to the entire ecosystem crypto.”

The crypto investment sector in Indonesia continues to experience steady growth, albeit amid global market fluctuations. With Bitcoin’s resurgence and a growing appetite for digital assets, the outlook for Indonesia’s crypto market is positive.

Crypto.com’s Dubai-based subsidiary secures crypto license

Crypto.com’s Dubai-based subsidiary secures crypto licenseCRO DAX Middle East, the Dubai-based subsidiary of Singapore-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange platform Crypto.com, has achieved a significant milestone by obtaining a license from the emirate’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) to provide specified virtual asset services.Photo by Timo Volz on UnsplashExpanding product offering in DubaiThe approval, announced by the firm via a press release published to its website on Tuesday, marks a pivotal moment for the Singapore-based Crypto.com, allowing it to offer regulated virtual asset services in Dubai, including exchange services, broker-dealer services, management and investment services as well as lending and borrowing services. The virtual assets service provider (VASP) license is contingent upon CRO DAX Middle East meeting specific conditions and localization requirements outlined by VARA. Once these conditions are satisfied and the operational approval notice is received from the regulator, the company will be poised to commence operations. These services will be made accessible to both retail and institutional users through Crypto.com’s app and exchange platform.Kris Marszalek, CEO of Crypto.com, expressed his enthusiasm for Dubai’s regulatory approach, stating: “Dubai continues to show it is a leading market when designing effective regulation for the crypto space while still supporting adoption and innovation.”Dubai’s virtual asset sector developmentThe regulatory framework for virtual assets in Dubai was established under the Dubai Virtual Asset Regulation Law in March 2022, leading to the creation of VARA. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, founded VARA with the aim of developing an advanced legal framework to safeguard investors. Furthermore, the objective was to set international standards for the governance of the virtual asset industry, while fostering responsible business growth.VARA issued regulations in February to provide clarity and certainty on the expected level of operator responsibility and to mitigate market risks. This move aligns with the broader context of global cryptocurrency regulations, aiming to create a safe environment for investors in the wake of recent collapses of major platforms.Crypto.com is working to become one of the first virtual asset exchanges to implement its VASP license in accordance with VARA’s specialized regulations issued earlier this year. The company had previously received its minimum viable product provisional license in June 2022 and the MVP preparatory license in March of the current year. The operational license, which follows the preparatory and provisional stages, grants virtual asset service providers permission to conduct activities in seven specified categories.Adapting to the marketThe company has also been working on licensing in other markets. In Singapore, where it is headquartered, the company received a Major Payment Institution (MPI) trading license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in June. The company has also re-calibrated its offering based on market shifts. Earlier this year, it halted its institutional exchange service in the United States due to a downturn in institutional demand stateside. In March 2022, Crypto.com declared Dubai as its regional hub for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), solidifying its commitment to expanding its presence and contributing to the growth of the cryptocurrency ecosystem in the region.

Metaplanet targeting 21K Bitcoin by 2026

Earlier this month Metaplanet, a Japanese Bitcoin treasury company, said that it was targeting 10,000 Bitcoin in 2025 but the company has raised the bar once again, planning on an acquisition of 21,000 Bitcoin by 2026. On Jan. 5, Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich set out a number of objectives for 2025. Among them was a goal for the company to acquire 10,000 Bitcoin in 2025. Gerovich explained that the firm intended to utilize “the most accretive capital market tools available” in order for Metaplanet to meet that target.Photo by André François McKenzie on Unsplash2025-2026 Bitcoin PlanAbout three weeks after the Metaplanet CEO announced that ambition, the company published a press release on Jan. 28 detailing its 2025-2026 Bitcoin Plan, which goes much further.  The plan outlines that 10,000 Bitcoin remains the target for 2025 but that the company has adopted the strategy to accumulate 21,000 Bitcoin by 2026. Gerovich stated that since Metaplanet embraced the Bitcoin Standard on April 8, 2024, the company has experienced exponential growth. Gerovich added: “The market has recognized Metaplanet as Tokyo’s preeminent Bitcoin company, and we are seizing this momentum to solidify our position as a global leader. Our vision is to lead the Bitcoin renaissance in Japan and emerge as one of the largest corporate Bitcoin holders globally. This plan is our commitment to that future.” Adopting MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin playbookMetaplanet has adopted the Bitcoin playbook first pioneered by U.S. business intelligence company turned Bitcoin development firm MicroStrategy. In short, that playbook involves financing Bitcoin purchases with debt. In this way, the company can capitalize on Bitcoin’s historical trend of positive returns over time, using convertible notes and equity to facilitate that.  The practice also creates a feedback loop in so far as MicroStrategy buys Bitcoin, resulting in the Bitcoin unit price increases. The MicroStrategy stock price goes up. Demand for MicroStrategy’s stock and debt goes up, enabling the company to buy more Bitcoin. In its press release, Metaplanet looked back on what had been achieved in terms of its Bitcoin strategy in 2024. In Q4 2024, the company achieved a Bitcoin yield of 309.82%, following on from a 41.7% Bitcoin yield in Q3.  At the close of the year, the Japanese Bitcoin treasury company held 1,761 Bitcoin, purchased at an average Bitcoin unit price of 11.85 million yen ($76,411). Shareholder growth has seen the company surpass 50,000 shareholders. Meanwhile, share trading volume has increased 430x, year-on-year. Since the firm adopted the Bitcoin Standard in April 2024, the company’s market capitalization has grown by 7,000%. Last month, the company celebrated the milestone of having reached a $1 billion market cap. Asia’s largest equity capital raise for BitcoinThe company has dubbed its new plan “The 21 Million Plan.” It will comprise the issuance of 21 million shares by means of moving strike warrants. Gerovich confirmed on X that at $750 million, the plan will involve Asia’s largest-ever public equity capital raise to buy Bitcoin.
