Bringing in a seasoned expert

According to industry sources on Wednesday, Coinone recently signed an audit contract with the official, who is now the highest-ranking auditor to be hired by a crypto exchange. It was reported that they had retired from the FSS just last week.

The new auditor has an extensive career in financial regulation, starting as an investigator at the Bank of Korea’s Legal Affairs Office, and then holding multiple leadership positions at various departments in the FSS, such as the Bank Supervision Department and the Financial Consumer Protection Department. More recently from 2020 to 2021, they served as the Director of the General Affairs Department. During their comprehensive 30-year tenure at both establishments, they gained expertise in the supervision of financial enterprises.

Coinone’s dedication to regulatory compliance

They are expected to start their duties at Coinone soon, shortly after the end of the recent Chuseok holiday. The decision to hire them was strongly influenced by its commitment to auditory regulation, the exchange said, emphasizing the need for internal control and preemptive risk management during the complex process of establishing itself as a formal business.

Considering the continued tightening of regulations on cryptocurrencies in Korea, such as the enactment of the Virtual Asset User Protection Act and the introduction of guidelines for accounting and reporting on trading cryptocurrencies, Coinone also said that it is determined to actively engage with financial authorities through the new auditor.

“This move reflects the intention to build practical expertise in audit services with FSS personnel who have professional knowledge in the area,” an industry insider commented.

Unprecedented surge in trading volumes on HashKey exchange

Unprecedented surge in trading volumes on HashKey exchangeHong Kong-based cryptocurrency exchange HashKey has experienced an unprecedented surge in daily trading volumes over the course of the past week, reaching approximately $4.5 billion, a notable increase from its usual levels.Photo by Jungwoo Hong on UnsplashToken rewards programThe surge, highlighted in a report published by The Block on Monday, occurred on Friday, and is being attributed to the company’s token rewards program, according to a spokesperson from HashKey Group.A HashKey Group spokesperson clarified that the surge in volumes was a result of the company’s recent HSK rewards campaigns, which involve the distribution of HSK tokens or EcoPoints. Introduced in April, these incentives were designed to encourage trading activity on the platform. The spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to operating within the regulatory framework, stating:“At HashKey, we operate strictly within the regulatory framework, and any actions of misconduct are not tolerated.”Last Thursday, HashKey issued a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), detailing one of its incentive campaigns. The post announced the introduction of a DOT/USD trading pair and encouraged users to explore additional ways to earn through ongoing campaigns. Despite receiving only 15 likes, the post aimed to attract users with the promise of HSK rewards for logging in, trading and participating in the platform’s campaigns.Licensing approval in AugustHashKey had obtained the first license to offer retail crypto trading in Hong Kong in August under the new regulatory regime, with an upgrade of its type 1 and type 7 licenses. Officially opening to traders on November 1, it quickly garnered attention in the crypto community. In the same month, it also launched an app, offering full mobile trading capabilities. While daily trading volumes on Sunday dropped to $275 million, still higher than the usual levels but closer to the volumes recorded in its initial month, the significant spike on Dec. 1 was particularly noteworthy. Comparatively, Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, recorded $11.3 billion in volume over the past 24 hours.Wash trading ruled outSpeculation arose on X regarding the possibility of wash trading contributing to the sudden surge in volumes. Wash trading involves intentionally matching a large number of orders to create artificial trading activity. However, HashKey’s spokesperson dismissed these claims, stating that no misconduct has been detected.Justin d’Anethan, Head of Business Development in Asia for Keyrock, a crypto market-making firm, commented on the situation, stating:“Many people in the crypto space assumed wash trading was taking place… But it’s almost unbelievable.”He noted that if one wanted to appear more active, it would be done gradually, rather than in a single surge.Market sentiment and trading volume trendOver the course of the past 24 hours, the Bitcoin unit price has surged from $39,500 to almost $42,000, with Asian trading believed to have contributed significantly to that trading momentum. The overall crypto market capitalization has reached $1.5 trillion for the first time since early 2022. Bitcoin trading volume over the past 24 hours hit $39 billion, with a bitcoin market dominance rate of 51%.

Metaplanet aims for 10K Bitcoin stockpile

Metaplanet, a Japanese Bitcoin treasury company listed on the Tokyo stock exchange, is targeting a holding of 10,000 BTC in 2025.2025 targetTaking to the X social media platform on Jan. 5, the company’s CEO, Simon Gerovich, set out a number of objectives which the company will strive to reach in 2025. Among them is the objective to expand the company’s Bitcoin holdings to 10,000 BTC. Gerovich said that the expansion of the firm’s Bitcoin holding would be achieved “by utilizing the most accretive capital market tools available to us.” He followed up on Jan. 6 with an announcement that Metaplanet has completed its 12th series stock acquisition rights. Gerovich claimed that the successful completion of the stock issuance marked “a milestone in Metaplanet’s financing and Bitcoin acquisition strategy.” The 12th series stock issuance was first announced back in November, with a six-month exercise period opening on Dec. 17. Additionally, the company issued 4.5 billion yen ($28,562,451) and 5 billion yen ($31,736,057) in ordinary bonds, with a maturity date of June 2025. Other objectives the company has set out for 2025 include enhancing transparency and shareholder engagement through new initiatives. Furthermore, Metaplanet intends to leverage its partnerships to advance Bitcoin adoption in Japan and further afield. Gerovich said that Metaplanet will explore innovative opportunities to grow the firm’s impact in Japan and within the Bitcoin ecosystem.Photo by Vasilis Chatzopoulos on Unsplash2024 ‘transformational’The Metaplanet CEO claimed that 2024 had been “transformational” for the company. He added: “We broke records, expanded our Bitcoin treasury, and reinforced our position as Asia’s leading Bitcoin Treasury Company.” Shifting its attention to 2025, the firm is focused on its efforts to drive greater value for shareholders. Metaplanet’s fortunes are now heavily dependent upon the performance of Bitcoin. In an interview at a New Year’s Eve party held in Miami by Microstrategy founder Michael Saylor, Gerovich commented on Bitcoin adoption, stating:"I’m slowly but surely seeing Bitcoin becoming a topic of discussion at the highest levels of government. Corporations around the world are beginning to adopt it as a Bitcoin standard." The Metaplanet CEO is optimistic that the U.S. will adopt a strategic Bitcoin reserve once the Trump administration commences. Should that happen, he believes that other countries will follow. He sees Japan as one of those countries where they do look to the U.S. as a guide on such matters. “So I think if President Trump does adopt it as a strategic reserve, then Japan and many countries in Asia will do the same,” he stated. Metaplanet is understood to be pursuing a business model very similar to the one pioneered by Microstrategy in the United States. The company increased the rate at which it acquired Bitcoin in H2 2024. Metaplanet made its first Bitcoin purchase in April 2024. At that time, its stock was trading at $1.90. Just as the Bitcoin unit price surged, so too did Metaplanet stock, closing the year at $22.05 per share.

Asian Countries Dominate Chainalysis’ 2023 Global Crypto Adoption Index

Asian Countries Dominate Chainalysis’ 2023 Global Crypto Adoption IndexBlockchain analytics firm Chainalysis has just unveiled an excerpt of its “2023 Global Crypto Adoption Index,” revealing that Asian nations are top of the class in terms of the pace of crypto adoption. The report extract published to the Chainalysis website brings into focus the remarkable strides made by a number of Asian countries, emerging as the front-runners in driving grassroots cryptocurrency adoption. The index showcases the dominance of regions like Central and South Asia, along with the broader Oceania regions. Astonishingly, six of the top 10 countries on the index hail from this part of the world.Photo by Louis Hansel on UnsplashIndia takes top spotIndia, in particular, shines as the torchbearer of cryptocurrency adoption in the region, securing its position as the largest cryptocurrency market. It not only leads the way in grassroots adoption but has also ascended to become the second-largest crypto market globally in terms of raw estimated transaction volume, eclipsing even some major global economies. It’s interesting that India should find itself in this position when you consider that a number of measures have been taken that could have been expected to dampen adoption. The Indian authorities introduced a 30% tax on capital gains earned through the sale of digital assets, as well as a 1% tax on Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) for all crypto transactions.Last month, Indian crypto exchange CoinDCX specifically cited these tax burdens, combined with the recent bear market, as being contributing factors in its decision to cut its workforce by 12%. Another excerpt of the Chainalysis report explicitly refers to these measures and their potential to retard cryptocurrency use.Adoption despite bear marketDespite a temporary downturn in worldwide grassroots cryptocurrency adoption, Chainalysis’ research finds that these developing Asian nations, have not only weathered the storm brought about by the recent bear market but have thrived, with their total grassroots adoption surpassing the levels of Q3 2020, just before the most recent bull market.Other countries featuring in the top ten include Vietnam (third), the Philippines (sixth), Indonesia (seventh), Pakistan (eighth), and Thailand (tenth). China, Turkey, Bangladesh, and Japan then feature within the top twenty. This data holds promise for the cryptocurrency landscape in the Asian region. Many of these nations are lower middle-income (LMI) countries that typically exhibit burgeoning industries and populations, collectively representing more than 40% of the global population. Chainalysis suggests that if these countries shape the future, cryptocurrencies are poised to play an indispensable role in shaping the global financial ecosystem.Institutional adoptionThe excerpt from the report also hints at the burgeoning trend of institutional adoption in high-income countries, even in the face of a lingering bear market. This suggests a potential dual-directional adoption scenario, where cryptocurrencies cater to the needs of users from both affluent and developing nations, bringing together a diverse spectrum of economic backgrounds. The report takes an optimistic outlook, stating:“Grassroots crypto adoption isn’t about which countries have the highest raw transaction volumes. . . . Instead, we want to highlight the countries where average, everyday people are embracing crypto the most.”“If LMI countries are the future, then the data indicates that crypto is going to be a big part of that future.”
