Mt. Gox Extends Repayment Deadline to 2024

Policy & Regulation·September 21, 2023, 11:40 PM

In a development that has captured the attention of the cryptocurrency community, failed Japanese crypto exchange Mt. Gox has officially announced a one-year extension of its repayment deadline.

The decision, authorized by the Tokyo District Court, represents a one-year delay from the previously stipulated date of October 31, 2023.

Infamous collapse

At its height, Mt. Gox was the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, facilitating over 70% of all cryptocurrency trades. However, its fall from grace began in 2014 when it fell victim to a colossal hack, resulting in the loss of 850,000 Bitcoins. The collapse left approximately 24,000 creditors in its wake, each of them agonizing over a multi-year period for the return of their digital assets.

In a letter dated September 21, Rehabilitation Trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi announced the extension of the repayment deadline. This extension applies to the base repayment, early lump-sum repayment, and intermediate repayment, all of which have been rescheduled to October 31, 2024.

The rationale behind this delay is twofold. Firstly, to provide creditors with additional time to furnish essential information required for the repayment process. Secondly, it will allow the trustee to coordinate with associated banks, fund transfer service providers, and cryptocurrency exchanges to facilitate the repayments.

Potential payout for diligent creditors

A glimmer of hope exists for creditors who have diligently provided the necessary information. Repayments may commence sequentially as early as the close of this year. That said, it should be noted that the specific timing of repayments for each creditor remains uncertain.

Kobayashi emphasized that the schedule is subject to change depending on circumstances, and further adjustments are possible. The Mt. Gox Debtor has encouraged creditors who have as yet not provided required information to facilitate payments to do so.

Naturally enough, long suffering creditors are frustrated by this latest update. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), one user named “Mt.Gox’ed” wrote: “People will not get their Mt.Gox money back.” . . . “I’ve been tweeting for a long time that infinite delays are coming.”

The move evoked a similar response from distressed debt specialist Thomas Braziel, who wrote: “Another delay from the MtGox trustee’s office — COME ON!”

Mt. Gox’s journey towards rehabilitation has been arduous and protracted since its declaration of insolvency in 2014. Legal battles, extensive delays, and the need for meticulous coordination have all contributed to this postponement. Nonetheless, creditors are holding onto the hope that, with this extension, the path to recovering their lost assets will become smoother.

Crypto market impact

This latest news has drawn considerable attention within the broader crypto sector as it may have implications for the market as a whole. The repayment delay holds the potential to impact Bitcoin prices, given the sheer volume of tokens that will be released when repayments begin. The Mt. Gox estate holds 142,000 BTC, 143,000 BCH, and 69 billion JPY.

As per UBS analysts, while this influx of funds could influence the market, it is unlikely to destabilize Bitcoin. Notably, the recovery of approximately 20% of the stolen tokens after the hack reflects a positive step in the ongoing rehabilitation process.

G20 Nations Believed to Have Agreed Upon Global Crypto Framework

G20 Nations Believed to Have Agreed Upon Global Crypto FrameworkUnder India’s current leadership of the G20, reports are emerging that participating nations have reached a unanimous consensus on establishing a common framework for cryptocurrency regulation.According to local news sources, this monumental decision has been reached, and it’s expected to take center stage during the 18th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit scheduled for September 9–10 in New Delhi.Photo by Rachit Chaudhary on UnsplashIMF/FSB synthesis paperThe reports published on Wednesday cite information from official sources that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Financial Stability Board (FSB) have collaboratively released a synthesis paper laying the groundwork for this comprehensive regulatory framework. Consequently, discussions around this initiative will likely feature prominently on the agenda during the upcoming leaders’ summit. The unity achieved by G20 nations in forging this global cryptocurrency regulation framework marks a significant milestone in the ever-evolving area of digital assets. The framework’s primary goal is to provide a structured approach to oversee cryptocurrencies, potentially mitigating risks associated with their use, all while fostering innovation within the rapidly expanding crypto sector.Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs)Aside from this development relative to digital assets, multiple working groups have been working on recommendations related to Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs). These groups have proposed measures to confront future financing challenges, and there is growing support for establishing a $200 billion fund to meet financing needs over the next decade.Beyond financial concerns, the G20 nations, under India’s leadership, have embarked on a comprehensive evaluation of the high volatility in food and energy security. Stressing the vital importance of stability in these sectors for sustainable global growth, these issues will take the spotlight during the leaders’ summit later this week.TaxationAnother area where India has made significant strides is international taxation. During India’s G20 Presidency, a pillar taxation system for international taxation has been recommended. The efforts in this domain have been described as making “significant progress” so far, underscoring the commitment of G20 nations to address global taxation challenges. It’s interesting to note that on the home front, India has been far less progressive when it comes to crypto-related taxation. The country has imposed a 30% tax on cryptocurrency transactions. Local crypto exchanges have also pointed to a 1% Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) which is being applied to exchanges as a major challenge that is having an impact on their operations.A threat and an opportunityLate last month, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged his G20 counterparts to work towards global collaboration in respect of formulating global crypto regulations. On Wednesday India’s Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, confirmed that active discussions were underway as part of India’s G20 presidency. At an event in India’s financial capital of Mumbai, Sitharaman stated:”India’s [G20] presidency has put on the table key issues related to regulating or understanding that there should be a framework for handling issues related to crypto assets.” While confirming that G20 members were working toward establishing a global crypto framework, Sitharaman also remarked that crypto was a “threat as well as an opportunity.”

Cryptocurrency Losses Surge to $686 Million in Q3

Cryptocurrency Losses Surge to $686 Million in Q3The cryptocurrency industry has witnessed a turbulent third quarter, with losses surging to $686 million. This unsettling development marks the worst quarter of the year, contributing to $1.4 billion in total losses year-to-date.Photo by GuerrillaBuzz on UnsplashImmunefi reportThese alarming statistics have been unveiled in a report by Singapore-headquartered blockchain security firm Immunefi. According to the report, the number of crypto hacking incidents skyrocketed by 153% year-over-year in the third quarter, with 76 separate incidents recorded. This stands in stark contrast to the same period in 2022, which saw a mere 30 hacking incidents. Furthermore, the losses resulting from these incidents witnessed a 60% increase, surging from approximately $429 million in Q3 2022 to the current level of $685 million. This marks the highest loss recorded for the year.Devastating hacksOf these incidents, two major hacks targeting Mixin Network and Multichain were particularly devastating, accounting for nearly half of the total losses in the quarter at $326 million. The Mixin Network hack, attributed to North Korean-sponsored hackers known as the Lazarus Group, underscores the involvement of state-backed actors in crypto-related cybercrimes. The Lazarus Group’s fingerprints were also found in major hacks of cryptocurrency exchanges, including CoinEx, Alphapo, and Stake, as well as digital payments firm CoinsPaid. Web3 projects based in Japan have been particularly hard hit by the hacker group’s activities. The group was responsible for losses exceeding $200 million. An overwhelming majority of the total Q3 losses, approximately 97%, were attributed to hacking incidents, while frauds and scams constituted a mere 3%. Decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols bore the brunt of the damage, with nearly $500 million lost, compared to over $185 million stolen from centralized exchanges and services. This highlights the vulnerability of DeFi platforms and the intricacies of smart contract code that underlie many of these applications.Among the targeted blockchains, Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Coinbase-incubated Base blockchain were the most prominent, with Ethereum being hit by 35 out of 82 chain losses. These platforms were singled out due to the substantial funds they held and the high level of activity on their networks.Greater recovery effortsThough the situation may appear bleak, there is a glimmer of hope in the form of recovery efforts. Immunefi reports an 8.9% recovery rate, with $61.2 million of stolen funds successfully reclaimed in six cases. Notably, Mixin Network recently introduced a $20 million “bug bounty” in a bid to incentivize the return of stolen funds, underscoring the cryptocurrency industry’s unwavering determination to combat these challenges.Immunefi itself has played a pivotal role in mitigating crypto-related risks, disbursing over $80 million in bounties and safeguarding more than $25 billion in user funds across various protocols. The company’s recent launch of on-chain vaults represents a significant step toward decentralizing its bug bounty platform, further fortifying security within the crypto ecosystem.
