CityLabs Secures 8.55% Stake in Gopax

Web3 & Enterprise·September 25, 2023, 9:51 AM

CityLabs, a company listed on the KOSDAQ stock exchange, has stepped in as a rescue investor for the South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Gopax.

The company announced last Friday that it has acquired a total of 76,308 shares of Streami, the operator of Gopax, securing an 8.55% stake in the company. The investment amounts to a total value of KRW 5.4 billion (approximately $4 million).

Gopax’s turbulent history

Gopax has recently been facing public and regulatory scrutiny due to its internal struggles, such as undergoing major changes in leadership earlier this year following its acquisition by Binance, with Lee Jun-haeng resigning and Binance’s Asia Pacific Head, Leon Sing Foong, taking over.

After this event, Streami submitted reports to the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) under the Financial Services Commission (FSS) in line with requirements to inform the regulatory body about such changes. However, due to delays in the FIU’s approval process likely influenced by Binance’s various legal and regulatory challenges, there was yet another leadership transition — Foong stepped down, and Lee Joong-hoon, Gopax’s former Vice President, took over. Notably, Foong recently left Binance altogether amid regulatory crackdowns.

During this process, Gopax also struggled to make principal and interest payments on its own decentralized finance (DeFi) service, GOFi, in the wake of last year’s FTX collapse. The amount of customer funds locked in GOFi totals KRW 56.6 billion, according to an announcement made by Gopax in April. Binance acquired a stake in Gopax on the condition that it would inject enough capital into Gopax to repay this amount in full.

CityLabs steps in

As a result, there have been speculations that a Korean company would invest in Gopax and deliver the exchange from its woes. Some even predicted that this company might become a major shareholder, although CityLabs has acquired only an 8.55% stake due to the fact that the funds required to do so far exceed CityLabs’ annual revenue.

Last year, CityLabs reported a consolidated revenue of KRW 28.4 billion and an operating loss of KRW 6.1 billion. Although its revenue increased by 2% compared to the previous year, operating losses grew by 46.9%. While the company may not have sufficient funds at present to become a major shareholder, there lies the possibility that it may increase its stake in the future.

The acquisition seems to be driven by CityLabs’ interest in blockchain businesses and the crypto market. While it currently specializes in intelligent transportation systems (ITS), it was formerly Dayli Blockchain, which was affiliated with the crypto exchange Coinone and Dayli Financial Group (now known as Gowid). In 2017, Yellow Mobile became the largest shareholder of Dayli Financial, and in February 2018, it became the largest shareholder of DailyBlockchain, making Dayli Blockchain its subsidiary. Coinone was also a subsidiary of Yellow Mobile at the time. All of these ownership relations have now been restructured.

CityLabs has thus been involved in the blockchain industry for some time now with previous connections to cryptocurrency exchanges while also offering decentralized identity (DID) and blockchain as a service (BaaS) products. Observations point to the possibility that its history has influenced its decision to invest in Gopax.

“We acquired shares to secure an entry point into the crypto market and position ourselves as a major player,” the company said in a statement.

Meanwhile, financial authorities are considering plans to examine the eligibility of major shareholders when reviewing applications from crypto businesses.

Chinese Subsidiary of DBS Bank Launches e-CNY Product OfferingDBS Bank China, a cryptocurrency-friendly bank and subsidiary of the Singaporean multinational financial services firm DBS, has introduced a new solution for its customers in mainland China, facilitating transactions with the digital yuan. The bank has officially launched the digital yuan or e-CNY merchant solution, allowing businesses in mainland China to receive payments in the central bank digital currency (CBDC). The announcement of the new service offering was made via a press release published to the website of the parent company on Wednesday.Photo by Hanny Naibaho on Unsplashe-CNY settlementWith this new service, DBS clients in mainland China can receive the e-CNY and have it automatically settled into their CNY bank deposit accounts. DBS refers to this as a “merchant collection solution,” where the merchant collects the final amount in CNY directly into their bank deposit account. The solution aims to streamline the process by eliminating manual settlement procedures.Enabling CBDC functionalityThis innovative tool offers several advantages. It allows businesses to collect CBDC without the need for manual settlement processes. Moreover, the e-CNY’s capabilities enable users to receive payments in regions with limited internet connectivity, ensuring broader accessibility. The solution also provides reconciliation through consolidated merchant reports, with detailed e-CNY transactions available on DBS’ digital platform for business banking. The CEO of DBS Bank China, Ginger Cheng, announced that the first e-CNY transaction using the new solution has been successfully completed, involving a catering company in Shenzhen. Cheng emphasized that integrating a CBDC collection and settlement method into clients’ existing payment systems would position their businesses for a digital future where e-CNY becomes increasingly prevalent among Chinese consumers. She expressed the bank’s commitment to enhancing user experience and supporting China’s financial market innovation.Adoption pushChina has made substantial progress in promoting and expanding the digital yuan since its launch in 2019. The country’s central bank reported that there were 13.6 billion e-CNY in circulation, equivalent to approximately $2 billion, by the end of 2022.The digital yuan is currently accepted in 26 cities and 17 provinces across China, with further adoption expected as the program gradually expands to more regions. In recent days, another measure was taken to bring about everyday use of the digital yuan when the city of Jinan enabled use of the currency across its public transport system.DBS Bank has become actively involved in the digital assets space. In 2020, the bank launched cryptocurrency trading and custody services for institutional clients. In April of this year, it extended crypto trading services to its premier customers. The bank has also participated in various government-related blockchain initiatives in Singapore, including Project Orchid, Project Guardian, and Project Ubin.DBS is not the first foreign banking entity to collaborate with the Chinese relative to the digital yuan. Earlier this year, France’s BNP Paribas partnered with the Bank of China to promote the digital yuan to its corporate clients. The Chinese are clearly making every effort to promote use of the digital currency inside and outside of Chinese territory.

Crypto.com launches institutional trading platform in the U.S.

Crypto.com, the Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchange and digital asset brokerage, announced that it introduced an institutional trading platform in the United States. In a statement published on its website on Jan. 21, the company outlined that U.S. institutional and advanced traders can now access the new platform. The firm believes that the offering complements its retail-facing Crypto.com app., which currently serves the U.S. market.Photo by Joshua Hoehne on Unsplash480 trading pairsThe institutional-grade platform will enable access to over 300 cryptocurrencies and 480 trading pairs. The product is likely to appeal to a similar market segment as those clients targeted by the Crypto.com Custody Trust Company, a digital asset custodian, which was established last month. At that time, Crypto.com co-founder and CEO Kris Marszalek said that launching the digital asset custodian was the latest step on the company’s product roadmap, with a view towards building a business and a market presence within the U.S. and Canada.  Responding to this latest product offering, Marszalek stated: “We took the time to build the best possible product for institutional and advanced users around the world and we are now incredibly excited to fully introduce it in the market we continue to be bullish about – the U.S.” Marszalek added that Crypto.com has invested heavily in the exchange’s technological capabilities and banking rails. The Crypto.com CEO believes that this investment has resulted in exponential global growth for the company, with the platform becoming a leading U.S. dollar-supporting exchange. Regulatory tailwindsCrypto.com’s bullishness regarding the U.S. market currently stands in contrast with developments in June 2023 when the company decided to shut down its institutional exchange offering, citing limited demand amid a bleak market landscape for crypto in the United States.  At the time, the company was one of several to look towards opportunities outside of the U.S. Shortly afterwards, Crypto.com obtained a crypto trading license in Dubai. Competitors Gemini and Coinbase followed a similar strategy, looking at growth opportunities in the Middle East and Asia. It’s clear that a regulatory crackdown in the U.S. at that time curbed the expansion plans of many cryptocurrency platforms. Many industry experts are of the belief that there will be a pro-crypto Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the U.S. as part of the newly seated Trump administration.  Regulatory clarity is necessary for institutional involvement in the digital assets sector. Last week, Mark Uyeda, Acting Chairman of the SEC, announced the formation of a crypto task force with the objective of creating a clear regulatory framework for crypto. The U.S. is home to the world’s largest capital markets. A report produced by New York-headquartered blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis late last year identified that 70% of North American crypto transactions involved transfers that had a value in excess of $1 million, pointing to the level of institutional activity within that market.  Earlier this month, Crypto.com added the ability for U.S. platform users to trade stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
