Emurgo Looks to Fill in Missing Cardano Ecosystem Components

Web3 & Enterprise·September 14, 2023, 1:37 AM

Emurgo, the Singapore-based commercial arm and a founding entity of the Cardano blockchain network, plans on working towards filling in the gaps relative to needed Cardano ecosystem components.

So said Emurgo Founder and CEO Ken Kodama, in a recent discussion with Andrew Fenton, the Editor of Cointelegraph’s magazine. Emurgo is one of the three entities governing Cardano and has taken on the task of addressing what it perceives as “missing” components in the Cardano blockchain when compared to other leading blockchains.

Addressing 21 categories

Kodama outlined a strategic shift in Emurgo’s approach, describing it as a transition to a venture studio model to address 21 specific categories that he and his team believe require attention. According to Kodama, the solutions to these gaps will either be built by Emurgo themselves or sourced through investments, hackathons, or grants to incentivize developers within the Cardano community. Kodama stated: “So, that’s what we need to focus on, shifting from where we are today into a venture studio model.”

One area that the Emurgo CEO is looking to address is the need to introduce layer 2 solutions to enhance Cardano’s scalability. While other blockchains have seen significant development in this area, Kodama feels that Cardano needs to catch up. Therefore, it’s a priority for Emurgo to cultivate a similar environment within the Cardano network.

Along those lines, Emurgo is exploring zero-knowledge rollups and optimistic rollups, indicating the firm’s commitment to exploring and investing in what is the latest cutting-edge blockchain technology. To this end, they’ve already organized hackathons centered around these themes.

Developer proficiency issue

The Emurgo boss feels that one of these 21 shortfalls is more pressing than the rest. Kodama acknowledged that the barrier of having developers proficient in more obscure programming languages like Haskell and Plutus is a difficulty. He believes the current pool of developers with expertise in these languages is insufficient. To address this, Emurgo is keen to promote Aiken, a toolkit and a new programming language designed to facilitate the development of smart contracts on the Cardano blockchain.

Another one of the highlighted gaps is the absence of a robust decentralized identity (DID) system for enterprise adoption within the Cardano ecosystem. Kodama voiced his concern in this respect, stating: “We don’t see that much DID application being built on Cardano. So, that’s the first gap, or primary gap that we need to fill in.”

“Aiken and other programming language applicability are quite important to broaden the number of builders able to build on top of Cardano. We have been educating builders to code in Haskell and Plutus. We had more than 2,000 graduates. However, that’s not really enough,” Kodama added.

Emurgo has high hopes for Aiken and similar programming languages that can be integrated into Cardano, with the aim of diversifying the pool of developers capable of creating smart contracts on the platform, using a variety of programming languages.

OSL Prepares for Fund Launch Following License Approval

OSL Prepares for Fund Launch Following License ApprovalIn a press release published on Tuesday, Hong Kong-based digital asset platform OSL announced that its asset management business, OSL Asset Management (OSLAM), has been granted a license to trade by the autonomous territory’s securities regulator.Photo by Eliobed Suarez on UnsplashType 1,4 & 9 approvalHong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has issued the firm with a license which permits it to carry out trading activities encompassing Type 1 (dealing in securities), Type 4 (advising on securities) and Type 9 activities. The latter category enables OSLAM to carry on a business involved in asset management.Upcoming fund launchWith licensing secured, OSLAM is now building up to its first fund launch which it envisages will happen within the next few months. According to the statement the company released, “OSLASM’s inaugural product offering will concentrate on unlocking new opportunities in the rapidly growing sectors of blockchain solutions, artificial intelligence (AI), and Web 3.0 technologies.”The firm claims that it has access to unique deal flow, together with the experience to operate in the asset management arena relative to the digital asset sector. OSL thinks that it is well placed in this regard as it is one of only two companies in Hong Kong who are currently licensed to facilitate security token offerings, trading and dealing.”OSL is an offshoot of the BC Technology Group, a company that provides staffing services to clients in the telecommunications sector. Ken Lo, the Deputy Chairman of BC Technology Group said that this milestone would empower the company “to explore new frontiers in blockchain and AI, creating value for our clients and shaping the future of the industry.” He added that the firm “can unlock unprecedented opportunities for growth, collaboration, and value creation” relative to these sectors.Licensing going live in JuneHong Kong has been pulling out all the stops to enable crypto business in recent months. It recently called on the banks to make an additional effort in catering to the needs of crypto businesses. It has been working on a regulatory framework culminating in this licensing regime. Licensing goes live on June 1.Speaking at the Bloomberg Wealth Asia Summit on Tuesday, Eddie Yue, the CEO of Hong Kong’s other regulatory body, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), said that the autonomous territory had very high guardrails over the past number of years that impeded the development of digital asset-related business. Yue believes that Hong Kong now has the right level of regulation and investor protection in place to enable the development of the sector.According to Yue, Hong Kong sees a greater opportunity in the overarching digital assets space as it develops. “Virtual assets or crypto is actually a very broad term. It’s not really about crypto, you’re talking about stablecoins or tokenized assets in the future.,” he stated. Many commentators have suggested that all illiquid real world assets will ultimately be tokenized in the future. As it stands today, a mere $0.3 trillion of illiquid real world assets have been tokenized. Some researchers anticipate that this level of real world asset tokenization will climb to $16 trillion by 2030.

Bitstamp awarded MPI license in Singapore

Singaporean regulator, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), has awarded cryptocurrency exchange Bitstamp a Major Payment Institution (MPI) trading license.Photo by Julien de Salaberry on UnsplashExpanding into APACIn a blog post published on July 3, Bitstamp proclaimed that it is “globally trusted & now licensed in Singapore.” The company described the acquisition of the license as a milestone that “marks the start of [its] expansion into the APAC region.” It emerged in June 2024 that Bitstamp had been acquired by American trading platform Robinhood. The $200 million acquisition was finally completed last month. Bitstamp signaled last September that it planned to expand its institutional business across Australia and Asia. Earlier this year, parent company Robinhood outlined that it would use Bitstamp to crypto offerings in Singapore in 2025.Acquiring licensesAt that time, Johann Kerbrat, vice-president and general manager of Robinhood Crypto, said that “part of the reason why Bitstamp was attractive was because of their licenses with Singapore, in addition to its institutional business.” This latest license award strengthens the company’s efforts in gaining more traction in Asia. Licensing is all the more relevant given the recent actions of the Singaporean regulator. Last month, MAS set a June 30 deadline for unlicensed crypto firms operating out of the city-state and serving overseas customers to cease offering such services. Over recent years, Singapore has been striving towards establishing itself as a global hub for crypto startups. It has been successful in that endeavor insofar as a whole host of international crypto businesses have established a presence there.  However, its recent move to curb unlicensed firms working out of Singapore in providing services internationally has been interpreted as a much more cautious approach being taken by the Singaporean authorities. The regulator clarified its concerns recently:”MAS has set the bar high for licensing and will generally not issue a licence. The money laundering risks are higher in such business models and if their substantive regulated activity is outside of Singapore, MAS is unable to effectively supervise such persons. Without a licence, such DTSPs [Digital Token Service Providers] will have to cease their regulated activities.”Caution in Singapore to benefit Hong KongSingapore has been competing with cities like Hong Kong to develop and maintain that crypto hub status. Some commentators have expressed the view that Hong Kong will benefit from this latest move in Singapore.  Joshua Chu, a lawyer who co-chairs the Hong Kong Web3 Association, told the South China Morning Post (SCMP) recently that “this is likely to attract quality projects [to Hong Kong] looking for a compliant, liquid, and globally connected base.” In addition to licensing achieved in Asia, Bitstamp has acquired licensing in a number of European countries such as Italy, Spain, France and the Netherlands. Last month, Robinhood launched the trading of tokenized stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for users resident within the European Union (EU). It also revealed that it is in the process of building out a layer-2 network on top of the Arbitrum blockchain with a view towards using it to host tokenized real-world assets (RWAs).
