ADGM green light

That’s according to a press release published by Zawya, a business intelligence media outlet that covers the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The regulatory approval comes from the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), a renowned financial hub in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Salem Mohammed Al Darei, CEO of the ADGM Authority, extended his congratulations to Zodia Markets on this achievement and welcomed them into the ADGM ecosystem. The In-Principle Approval marks the third step in a comprehensive five-stage application process outlined by ADGM. The subsequent stages involve securing final approval and undergoing an “operational launch” test to ensure seamless functionality, with a need to follow ADGM’s guidance meticulously.

“The harmony of traditional and new-age finance in Abu Dhabi with an international leading digital asset firm such as Zodia Markets that is backed by the well-established Standard Chartered will contribute to further enhancing the attractiveness of ADGM as a preferred destination for global entities,” Al Darei stated.

Expanding global footprint

Zodia Markets’ strategic decision to enter the UAE market aligns with the growing prominence of the UAE in the digital assets industry. This move compliments Zodia Custody’s decision to launch a crypto custodian service in the UAE emirate of Dubai back in May. While both businesses are independent of each other and fully segregated, they share the very same parent company in Standard Chartered.

At the time, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by parent company Standard Chartered alongside the Dubai International Financial Center (DIFC).

This latest move bolsters the geographical presence of Zodia Markets but also provides institutional investors in the Middle East and Africa with convenient access to the world of digital assets, thereby strengthening the company’s global footprint in the digital asset space.

News of the firm’s intentions to enter the UAE market emerged last November. The company’s thinking at the time was that it could exploit an opportunity to expand in the MENA region due to more progressive regulation while the US and Europe were perceived to be developing at a much slower pace from a regulatory point of view, making them unattractive comparatively.

ADGM has been at the forefront of shaping the regulatory landscape for companies involved in virtual assets. In April, it put forward a legal framework for decentralized tech. As part of its commitment to fostering innovation, ADGM recently granted permission for the operation of a virtual asset platform named M2 and issued a license to the cryptocurrency exchange Rain in July.

Usman Ahmad, CEO of Zodia Markets, articulated the company’s mission, stating:

“Our goal is to provide institutions seamless access to trade digital assets without compromising on the standards and controls that exist in traditional financial markets.”

Zodia Markets is a joint venture between Standard Chartered and Hong Kong-based digital assets platform OSL, which also expressed its enthusiasm for the In-Principle Approval.

Indian railways to explore NFT ticketing during Holi festival

As part of the celebration of Holi, the Hindu festival of colors, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is unveiling a series of colorful NFT tickets for the Lucknow to Delhi train service. Governed by the Ministry of Railways, IRCTC is a central public sector enterprise in India. Taking to the X social media platform on March 13, the railway company offered a sneak peek into these NFTs, showcasing sketches of iconic landmarks from both Delhi and Lucknow against vividly shaded backgrounds.Photo by Johannes Plenio on UnsplashLimited-time ticketing offeringCommencing March 20, passengers booking tickets for Tejas trains numbered 82501 and 82502 will have the opportunity to access these exclusive NFTs, with the initiative set to conclude on April 2. In its social media post, the IRCTC outlined the additional perks accompanying these NFT tickets, stating:"These tickets are not merely digital souvenirs. ... They symbolize our dedication to enriching your journey experiences, allowing you to personalize your travel memories with your own photographs and enjoy exclusive offers from handpicked brands." As of now, the IRCTC has not officially confirmed whether these NFT tickets will be complimentary with ticket purchases or if passengers will need to make additional payments to acquire these digital collectibles. Polygon and HyperledgerNFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are digital assets built on blockchain networks. Earlier this year, the IRCTC collaborated with NFTtrace, a service offered by Bangalore-based blockchain development firm ChainCode Consulting, to offer NFT tickets for journeys to the Hindu sacred city of Ayodhya. The tickets were presented as more than mere travel documents but as cherished mementos of divine experiences. The NFTtrace website stated:"More than just a ticket to Ayodhya Dham - a souvenir of the divine Shree Ramotsav. Treasure the pious memories of Lord Shree Rama's arrival forever, with Blockchain NFT.”On that occasion, the NFT certificates were minted on the Polygon blockchain. Indian Railways has been exploring blockchain technology for some time now. Last March, the National Academy of Indian Railways partnered with Polygon to conduct a workshop aimed at raising awareness about the benefits of blockchain in railway industries. Polygon outlined that the integration of blockchain within the Indian railway system was the beginning of a new era that moves the technology towards mass adoption. In this latest instance, the NFTtrace platform is involved once again. However, this time around, the NFTs will be minted on the Hyperledger blockchain. Ava Labs, the developer of the Avalanche layer one blockchain, has expressed its interest in developing ticketing-related blockchain applications in India. Last October the firm highlighted blockchain-based ticketing as one of a number of areas it wanted to concentrate on in an expansion within India. Conventional firms in the travel industry have been experimenting with the technology on an ongoing basis in recent times. In 2023 Japan’s largest airline All Nipon Airways (ANA) launched its own NFT marketplace. Argentinian budget airline Flybondi took the decision to offer NFT-based tickets in 2023 in a partnership with NFT ticketing firm TravelX.

Turkish lira becomes third largest fiat currency in crypto trading

The Turkish Lira (TRY) has become the third largest fiat currency by volume in the cryptocurrency market, according to a report by Kaiko. This milestone was reached as TRY's share of the crypto market hit an all-time high of 19% in early June. The increase in volume is attributed to the country's economic challenges, notably its high inflation rate, which has surpassed 70%, making the lira one of the most volatile fiat currencies globally.Photo by Afdhallul Ziqri on UnsplashFactors influencing the increaseThe shift in the Turkish lira's position in the crypto market is partly due to increased foreign exchange volatility and currency devaluation, common catalysts for cryptocurrency adoption in developing economies. Additionally, geopolitical factors such as a record number of elections and diverging monetary policies have intensified market fluctuations. This environment has favored cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, which reached new highs against the lira in recent months. For instance, Bitcoin escalated to 2.3 million TRY in March from 979,000 TRY in October 2023. The recent adjustments in cryptocurrency trading platforms, particularly Binance's delisting of certain fiat trading pairs due to banking issues, have also increased the dominance of TRY in crypto transactions. This series of events underscores the growing interconnection between traditional and digital finance markets, highlighting the increasing role of cryptocurrencies in regions facing economic instability.
