Binance Set For Japanese Market Re-Entry With 34 Token Listings

Web3 & Enterprise·August 02, 2023, 12:44 AM

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, is gearing up to re-enter the Japanese market with a bang on August 14. According to a report published by local crypto media outlet Coinpost, Binance Japan is set to immediately list an impressive 34 tokens.

The move will put Binance ahead of its domestic rivals, as the offering will be the most extensive in terms of the selection of tokens made available to Japanese customers.

BNB token offering

In addition to that, Binance intends to make its native token, BNB, available in Japan for the first time. Exchange tokens have proven to be controversial in recent times. In November 2022, FTX’s reliance on their native token FTT caused a run on the exchange which Binance started once it started to sell off the token. Similar concerns have been expressed ever since about a similar reliance within Binance relative to its BNB token.

The expansion into Japan will likely prove a tonic for Binance, given the difficulties it has experienced in other markets recently. Regulatory pushback has forced Binance out of markets such as Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Cyprus over the course of the past three months.

The company has been actively working to comply with Japan’s regulatory environment. In a Twitter video posted in July, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), Binance’s Founder and CEO, expressed his excitement about re-entering the Japanese market. He praised Japan’s clear and progressive approach to crypto regulations, citing the well-established framework that dates back to 2017, as well as recent developments, including the opening up of crypto listing frameworks and the passing of stablecoin regulations in June.

Roadmap to market re-entry

Binance’s journey back into Japan started in November 2022 when it acquired 100% ownership of Sakura Exchange BitCoin (SEBC). The acquisition paved the way for Binance to be regulated by the Japan Financial Services Agency (JFSA). As part of this move, SEBC underwent a name change, rebranding itself as Binance Japan Inc. The company then announced in May its plans to re-enter the Japanese market.

The re-entry comes after the JFSA had previously issued warnings in 2021 against Binance for operating in the country without proper registration. Now, with the acquisition of SEBC and its regulatory compliance, Binance has gained a foothold in the Japanese market once again.

Binance Japan aims to provide a comprehensive suite of services to its Japanese customers. New users can access spot trading, Earn products, and the NFT marketplace, while existing customers can migrate to the local subsidiary starting August 14. The token offerings include a diverse range of assets, and the addition of BNB presents exciting opportunities for traders and investors in Japan.

Rival exchanges such as Coinbase and Kraken have decided to halt their operations in the country as they struggled to adjust to Japanese market conditions. The move by Binance to re-enter Japan’s market will be closely watched to see if it can succeed where others have failed.

Harvest Global to establish fixed income tokenized fundHong Kong investment firm Harvest Global Investments, in partnership with Meta Lab HK, is set to offer a tokenized U.S. dollar bond fund. The collaboration between Harvest Global Investments (HGI), an affiliate of Harvest Fund Management, and Meta Lab HK, backed by Harvest Digital Assets, marks a significant development in the crypto investment landscape within Hong Kong and the broader Asian region.Photo by Giorgio Trovato on UnsplashFirst fixed-income tokenized fund from Chinese institutionMeta Lab HK announced details of the new offering, detailed in a Nov. 22 post on X (formerly Twitter). The fund targets professional investors and will concentrate on U.S. dollar bonds with an investment-grade rating. Meta Lab wrote:”We have learned that this will be the first fixed-income tokenized fund introduced by a Chinese financial institution in Asia with a tokenization arrangement. The fund is exclusively available to professional investors and primarily invests in investment grade U.S. dollar bonds.”Meta Lab added, “The offering is set to be managed by HGI, a subsidiary of Harvest Fund in Hong Kong, with Meta Lab HK providing the tokenization solution.”The tokenization of the fund, a process transforming traditional financial assets into digital tokens, is expected to enhance accessibility and efficiency for investors. The notification to Hong Kong’s securities regulator has been duly completed, underscoring the compliance and regulatory adherence of the initiative. The move comes amidst a series of noteworthy developments emerging from Asia, occurring against the backdrop of persistent regulatory challenges facing the cryptocurrency industry in the United States.CoinFund market entryThis announcement follows closely on the heels of CoinFund, a New York-based investment firm, which revealed its plans to expand services into Asia earlier this week. Choosing Hong Kong as the inaugural location for this expansion, CoinFund cited the city’s appeal to crypto talents as a key factor. As Asia takes strides in pioneering tokenized funds, it suggests a competitive landscape in digital asset development that could rival the United States. It’s likely that Hong Kong is providing a workable environment for Harvest Global to take this tokenized product to market. In August, the local regulator, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), published a report where it indicated an interest in pursuing tokenization as a means to improve aspects of the bond market. The report presented outcomes of Project Evergreen, an initiative the HKMA had been running to examine the potential of tokenization, which also incorporated the launch of a first-of-its-kind tokenized green bond.Regional tokenization interestRecent weeks have also seen further efforts being made within the Asian region in terms of bond tokenization. Last week, SC Ventures, the Singaporean investment subsidiary of British banking group Standard Chartered, unveiled a new platform called Libeara. That platform is working towards the launch of the first-ever tokenized Singapore dollar government bond fund.In the same week, the Bureau of the Treasury in the Philippines announced that it is issuing $179 million in one-year tokenized bonds, with the bonds being facilitated by the Development Bank of the Philippines and the Land Bank of the Philippines.

Blockstream partnership & new office announced in Japanese expansion

Blockstream, a blockchain technology firm headquartered in British Columbia, Canada, has moved to expand its activities in Japan with the opening of a new office and the announcement of a partnership with local companies. The infrastructure development company has partnered with Diamond Hands and Fulgar Ventures, CoinDesk Japan reported. Diamond Hands is a Japan-based company involved in providing Bitcoin-related products. It helps companies to integrate Bitcoin and lightning payments into their services. Based in Wilmington, Delaware, Fulgur Ventures invests in early-stage startups. It is particularly focused on Bitcoin and Lightning Network-related projects.Photo by David Edelstein on UnsplashBootstrapping brand awareness Fulgur Ventures is Blockstream’s largest shareholder. The objective is to bootstrap brand awareness within Japan using these partnerships with local companies. To that end, Diamond Hands CEO Koji Higashi will become Blockstream’s brand ambassador. It’s thought that efforts will be made going forward to further expand partnerships with local Japanese companies. Blockstream announced in a press release that it aims to drive adoption of self-custody technologies and Bitcoin layer-2 innovations within the East Asian country. Furthermore, it plans to drive adoption of real-world asset (RWA) tokenization. Commenting on the development, Blockstream Founder and CEO Adam Back stated:"With increased regulatory clarity and rising institutional interest in Bitcoin now is the moment for Blockstream to establish a direct presence in Japan, one of our most important markets." Back added that the company is looking forward to “empowering Japanese enterprises and individuals to fully harness Bitcoin as the foundation for a financial future that's secure, scalable and decentralized.” Tokyo office Another aspect to the expansion involves the opening of an office in Tokyo by Blockstream.  Adam Back is a Bitcoin OG who has often been the subject of speculation in attempts to identify pseudonymous Bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto. Back proposed Hashcash, a proof-of-work-based system and forerunner to Bitcoin, in 1997. The Japanese corporate world has demonstrated its interest in Bitcoin in recent months, with local company Metaplanet launching an ambitious plan to acquire 21,000 Bitcoin by 2026, having adopted the Bitcoin playbook pioneered by American business intelligence and Bitcoin development company MicroStrategy. Blockstream’s investment arm, Blockstream Capital, has also been active in the market. Last month, the company invested $75 million into crypto custodian Komainu. Komainu is a joint venture between CoinShares, Ledger and Japanese global financial services company Nomura.  The same month, the company launched two institutional-grade Bitcoin investment funds. The funds, Blockstream Income Fund and Blockstream Alpha Fund, have been devised to cater to a growing demand from institutions for transparent, regulated and secure financial products. A third fund, Blockstream Yield Fund, is due to launch later this year. It will offer Bitcoin holders consistent, low-risk returns on their holdings. Blockstream was founded in 2014. In its earlier years, the company has served as a technology provider relative to the Liquid Network. In Core Lightning, it has developed a well-recognized implementation of the Lightning Network protocol.  To facilitate Bitcoin holders in terms of self-custody of the leading crypto asset, Blockstream developed Blockstream Jade, a hardware wallet built on open-source software. The device offers air-gapped functionality, meaning that users can perform transactions without connecting the device itself directly to the internet.

Ethereum Co-Founder Highlights User-Friendly Crypto Wallets at Ethcon Korea 2023

Ethereum Co-Founder Highlights User-Friendly Crypto Wallets at Ethcon Korea 2023Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin delivered a keynote speech last Friday at Ethcon Korea 2023 — a hackathon and conference sponsored by Ethereum for the Korean Ethereum community in Seongsu-dong, Seoul — where he emphasized the importance of making crypto wallets user-friendly by striking a balance between user familiarity and decentralization.Photo by Nenad Novaković on UnsplashEnhancing security and convenienceParticipating in the event via video call, Buterin explained Ethereum’s ERC-4337 account abstraction upgrade during his speech, which was livestreamed on the Ethcon Korea YouTube channel. “The goal of account abstraction — a field that many wallets are currently working on developing — can be broadly categorized into two areas: security and convenience,” he said.Deployed on the Ethereum mainnet in March, the ERC-4337 is a standard that makes it possible to transact and create contracts in a single contract account, paving the way for more user-friendly crypto wallet designs. At its core are features such as easy account recovery, improved security, and customized services like auto-pay and bundled transactions. This provides a more convenient alternative to other crypto wallets, which mostly rely on private keys for account access, complicating setup and recovery procedures especially if a user loses their seed phrase.“Wallets must fundamentally be secure in a decentralized way, but there should also be ways to recover passwords as hardware wallets do,” Buterin stated. “However, many projects still rely on methods such as account recovery via email.”Simplifying transactionsAnother change introduced through the update is gas flexibility. Gas is a fundamental fee that users must pay to conduct transactions or execute a contract on Ethereum. Wallets backed by ERC-4337 can pay gas fees with any Ethereum utility tokens and more, including USD coins (USDC).From a convenience standpoint, Vitalik argued, it is very useful for first-time Ethereum users to be able to pay for gas with the USDC they already have. Sponsored transactions, where applications pay for fees, will be a great way to attract new users, especially for non-financial applications. He further elaborated that in order to transition from being user-friendly but centralized to more decentralized, a combination of a faster but precarious centralized approach with a slower but safer decentralized approach is required. He also stressed the importance of utilizing the various options available in modern technology concerning convenience, security, and decentralization, saying that it is essential to utilize these options effectively, continuously improve them, and take advantage of the benefits.Since 2019, Buterin has used Ethcon as a platform to announce Ethereum’s development roadmap and major technical updates.
