Parachain Fork Sees Transition to Enjin Blockchain

Web3 & Enterprise·June 09, 2023, 12:42 AM

Enjin, a Singapore-headquartered non-fungible token (NFT) platform, has announced its transition to a new mainnet named Enjin Blockchain, with the goal of further advancing Web3 adoption. As part of this transition, Enjin has forked its Polkadot parachain, Efinity, to the new blockchain.

The project made the announcement via a blog post published to its website on Thursday.

Integrated functionality

According to the team at Enjin, the Enjin Blockchain distinguishes itself from other blockchain solutions by integrating functions such as NFT creation and transfer directly into the foundational code of the blockchain, eliminating the reliance on smart contracts. This integration aims to streamline and simplify the process of creating and transferring NFTs.

In addition to this fundamental change, the Enjin Blockchain introduces several new features. One notable feature is “Fuel Tanks,” which enables developers to subsidize user transaction fees, making it more cost-effective for users to interact with the blockchain. Another feature is “Discrete Accounts,” which allows users to engage with blockchain-based projects without the need to download specific wallet software.

Fork to Efinity Matrixchain

Alongside the transition to the Enjin Blockchain, the team has also forked Efinity, the Polkadot parachain, to the new mainnet. This rebranded version will be known as the Efinity Matrixchain and will facilitate a smooth transition for existing users.

Witek Radomski, the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Enjin, emphasized that the launch of the Enjin Blockchain aims to support creativity by making the creation and distribution of NFTs more accessible and affordable. Radomski stated: “Enjin Blockchain makes the creation and mass distribution of NFTs affordable and accessible to everyone. Our aim is nothing short of revolutionizing gaming, ownership, and online identity.”

Enjin’s chief financial officer, Oscar Franklin Tan, expressed his belief that NFTs and digital ownership will be pivotal in the future of gaming, particularly with advancements in artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality. Tan emphasized Enjin’s commitment to supporting this next wave of gaming and the resulting “explosion of content.”

Enjin believes that it sets itself apart from the competition due to the fact that it’s built on top of the open-source Substrate framework, a mechanism that facilitates the development of customized blockchains that may be run on an entirely autonomous basis.

Using this unique approach, Enjin Blockchain doesn’t depend upon the use of smart contracts. Instead, critical functions such as creating, using, and transferring NFTs are integrated directly into the core, foundational blockchain code.

NFT lending stability

In related news, the stability of NFT lending has been aided by the use of blue-chip collateral. Paraspace, an NFT protocol, recently reported that despite facilitating NFT loans totaling over $280 million, it experienced no bad debt and only 16 NFT liquidations. This success can be attributed to the protocol’s requirement that only blue-chip NFTs can be used as collateral, ensuring the value and stability of the assets involved.

As Enjin embraces its new mainnet and the Efinity Matrixchain, the platform positions itself as a key player in the evolving NFT and blockchain landscape. With a focus on accessibility, affordability, and the support of creative endeavors, Enjin aims to drive innovation in gaming, ownership, and online identity.

Korea’s FSS Seeks to Protect Investors from Crypto Exploit Losses

Korea’s FSS Seeks to Protect Investors from Crypto Exploit LossesLee Bokhyun, Governor of the Korean Financial Supervisory Service, said the agency will seek to protect investors from losses resulting from cryptocurrency exchange exploits, according to Korean newspaper Donga Ilbo.©Pexels/RODNAE ProductionsEfforts to enact legislationWhile delivering a congratulatory speech at a forum co-hosted by Donga Ilbo and its subsidiary broadcasting company Channel A on Wednesday, Lee underlined that the agency will be committed to enacting legislation that obligates crypto exchanges to be held accountable for customer asset losses caused by hacks. He explained that amidst a continued crypto winter triggered by multiple failures, such as the collapse of the stablecoin Terra last year, cases of security vulnerabilities are subsequently occurring.Cold wallet requirementsIn response to this situation, financial authorities and the National Assembly are collaborating on legislation that would require crypto exchanges to store a portion of their custody assets in cold wallets, which are disconnected from the Internet, or face liability for damages resulting from hacks.A February report from blockchain data platform Chainalysis showed that losses to crypto hacks last year amounted to $3.8 billion. Earlier this month, Korean crypto exchange GDAC suffered an exploit of 20 billion KRW (~$15 million).Lee said the agency will work with the financial industry to bolster the fraud detection system and build an immediate response system that prevents uncanny transactions when abnormalities are detected. These efforts are to curb the rise in financial crimes, which followed the growing popularity of remote banking services.Experts’ inputsAt the event held to discuss the protection of consumer information in the digital age, senior researcher Kim Gap-rae at Korea Capital Market Institute said that a law should be introduced to penalize unfair practices, such as market manipulation and use of undisclosed information, in the virtual asset market.Lee Joo-hwan, head of the information security management division at Hana Bank, suggested the approach used in the US, which is recovering ill-gotten gains from financial crimes to compensate victims.Kang Byung-hoon, a professor who teaches cyber security at KAIST, anticipated that the financial industry would accelerate the adoption of confidential computing, a highly secure system, to which even administrators have limited access.

Chinese Nationals Detained in Crypto Mining Clampdown in Libya

Chinese Nationals Detained in Crypto Mining Clampdown in LibyaAuthorities in Libya have detained 50 Chinese nationals suspected of involvement in an illicit crypto mining operation in Zliten, a city located 160 kilometers east of the Libyan capital of Tripoli. The attorney general’s office in Libya made the announcement on Friday, revealing that the individuals were caught operating a cryptocurrency mining farm within an abandoned iron factory.Photo by Dmitry Demidko on UnsplashMining operation dismantledPhotos and videos released by the office of Attorney General Siddiq Al-Sour showcased the dismantling process of the extensive mining systems discovered in Zliten. This is not the first instance of Chinese miners being detained for crypto mining activities in the North African country. The development follows the recent arrest of ten other Chinese nationals in the city of Misrata on the Mediterranean coast, as well as at two sites within the capital, Tripoli. The individuals were apprehended on Wednesday while being caught “red-handed” with numerous powerful equipment used for intricate proof of work (PoW) mining calculations. The mining rigs were subsequently confiscated by the attorney general’s office.Mining banDespite the official ban on cryptocurrency mining in the country, Libya has witnessed a high prevalence of such activities, with the nation recording the highest percentage of cryptocurrency mining across the African continent in 2021. It is estimated that Libya accounted for approximately 0.6 percent of global Bitcoin production during that year.Libya’s appeal as a destination for cryptocurrency mining stems from its low electricity costs, which stand at a remarkably low rate of $0.004 per kilowatt hour. This cost is approximately 40 times cheaper than in the United States, making Libya an attractive location for miners. While energy may be cheap, the increased demand for electricity that crypto mining brings puts a strain on what was an already vulnerable power grid in the country. That has resulted in frequent and lengthy power blackouts, particularly during the summer months.A lack of oversight has also encouraged an influx of Chinese miners, albeit with these recent arrests, it appears that the Libyan authorities are stepping up the level of oversight and enforcement. The vast majority of Bitcoin miners were based in China up until a mining ban was enforced in 2021.Global issueThat event led to an exodus of miners internationally. Some established themselves legally in the United States and elsewhere. The first casualty of illegal mining was Kazakhstan. The sudden arrival of miners led to its power grid coming under pressure. As a consequence, the Central Asian country clamped down on the activity, and later regulated it.In response to these illegal activities, Libyan authorities have intensified their efforts to combat cryptocurrency mining operations. They are conducting investigations into alleged mining sites in Tripoli and Misrata, aiming to curtail these activities and mitigate the strain on the country’s electricity infrastructure. The recent arrests highlight the ongoing challenges associated with illegal mining activities in jurisdictions globally where cheap energy can be exploited, giving rise to the need for enhanced regulatory measures to address these issues.
