Binance Introduces Dedicated Trading Platform in Japan

Web3 & Enterprise·May 27, 2023, 1:51 AM

Global cryptocurrency exchange Binance made an announcement on Friday regarding its plans to establish a new trading platform exclusively for residents of Japan.

The move is in compliance with Japanese laws and regulations, and a demonstration of the company coming into line with Japan’s legal and regulatory framework relative to crypto assets and crypto asset trading. While specific details such as the platform’s launch date are yet to be disclosed, Binance has assured its Japanese customers that this information will be provided in the near future.

Platform transition

In terms of scheduling, we do know that a new know your customer (KYC) verification process will be available after August 1, to migrate to the new local platform for existing Japanese users on the global platform. As part of the transition process, Binance will be sending out information to Japanese residents who currently utilize their global trading platform. This communication will include instructions on procedures including further information on identity verification.

To facilitate a smooth transition, Binance’s global trading platform will cease providing services to Japanese residents on November 30, 2023. Additionally, there are plans to change the company name from Sakura Exchange Bitcoin to “Binance Japan Co., Ltd.”

This development marks Binance’s initial foray into the Japanese market firmly under its own brand. In November 2022, the company entered the country by acquiring Sakura Exchange Bitcoin (SEBC). The forthcoming trading platform, dedicated exclusively to domestic residents, represents the first step in Binance’s strategic approach to the Japanese market.

The new services on the platform are set to launch during the summer, with future expansion plans to broaden that offering further. Binance also intends to introduce initiatives in Japan that leverage its ecosystem, including the provision of free educational resources through “Binance Academy” to promote Web3 education.

Service offering

The newly created entity will offer crypto spot trading with fiat deposit and withdrawal facility to its Japanese customers. Crypto lending products will be provided through a digital asset earn program. For those who like to dollar cost average (DCA), an automated recurring purchase feature will be provided.

In 2021, Binance introduced an NFT marketplace and that will be a service that it will also extend to its Japanese customers. Upon launch of the dedicated service, crypto derivative trading will not be offered although it is understood that it may be offered at a later stage. Derivatives are likely to be under much closer scrutiny by the Japanese regulator than Binance’s other products.

It is worth noting that Binance had previously received a warning from the Financial Services Agency (FSA) for offering cryptocurrency trading services to Japanese residents without proper registration. With its full-fledged entry into the Japanese market, it remains to be seen what impact this move will have. Will it accelerate the regulatory landscape and the adoption of Web3 technology in Japan from a global perspective?

Additionally, how smoothly will Binance be able to acquire new accounts while competing with domestic business operators? These developments warrant close attention as they unfold.

Alchemy Pay Enables Rupee Payments Through UPI

Alchemy Pay, a Singapore-based platform that supports fiat to crypto purchases across 173 countries using Visa, Mastercard, regional mobile wallets and domestic transfers, has announced that it now provides a rupee-denominated on-ramp using India’s UPI real-time payments system.Photo by rupixen.com on UnsplashIn a recent blog post, the fiat to crypto payments solutions provider outlined that it now has the capacity to more effectively on-ramp India’s 1.4 billion citizens by enabling domestic transfer payments to effect crypto purchases through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a popular instant payments system in India. Processing domestic transactionsThe move means that Indian citizens can interact with the platform by way of simple, real-time domestic transfers, with a minimum purchase value of 1250 INR. First introduced in 2016, UPI has been wildly successful. In September 2022, the system recorded a monthly transaction volume of 6.7 billion transactions, representing a movement of $140 billion. The platform has partnered with 358 banks and continues to grow and expand its network. In Alchemy Pay’s home territory of Singapore, UPI has recently secured an integration with PayNow, a Singaporean secure funds transfer service. Referring to the PayNow/UPI integration in its blog post, Alchemy Pay is likely to be extending its UPI-based transfer service as a direct consequence. The payments facilitator claims that its plugin is “now being used by many wallets, DeFi, gaming and NFT marketplaces, as well as exchanges like OKX and LBank.”The Alchemy Pay platform has focused in particular on emerging regional real-time payments platforms. Within emerging markets it supports similar systems such as Pix, SPEI, GCash, Dana and OVO. As the Singaporean start-up puts it, ”simplifying the on-boarding process is crucial for the widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies and by enabling local payment options, Alchemy Pay makes the adoption by a growing number of users possible.”Off the back of this expanded service offering, the company is currently inviting developers of Web3 platforms and dApps to get in touch so as to enable them in adding its plugin and integrating its API. Importance of bridging crypto with fiatIn another blog post on Monday, Alchemy Pay underscored the importance of an ability to on/off ramp to and from the crypto ecosystem. The company points out that in its recent history, the crypto space has been a complex and intimidating environment to enter or exit to/from the conventional world. It claims to be playing its part in changing this.According to the firm, its available options of transferring fiat currency to a user’s credit card, savings card or bank account via SWIFT, IBAN or local bank transfer is far more seamless than what has been offered to crypto space participants up until now. These transfers can be effected in minutes, with the platform supporting 22 currencies and payouts facilitated in over 60 countries. The digital assets space doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Current generations were all born into fiat-based monetary systems and naturally enough, the overwhelming majority of wealth is tied up within traditional systems. While digital assets have garnered quite a bit of attention over the course of the past few years, the overall market capitalization of crypto, which stands at $1.2 trillion at the time of publication according to cryptocurrency data aggregator CoinGecko, is only a drop in the bucket by comparison with the wealth that exists within the conventional system. More seamless bridging in line with what Alchemy Pay is offering will be necessary for this space to have a realistic chance of conquering mass market adoption.

Crypto popularity surges in Turkey as security remains top investor concern

A recent survey by Turkish crypto exchange Paribu reveals that 99% of Turkish investors are now familiar with digital assets, a significant rise from just 16% in 2020. Digital assets have emerged as the third most popular investment choice in Turkey, overtaking traditional options like real estate. Investors are now nearly twice as likely to consider digital assets over stocks or mutual funds, a trend seen across other Asian nations, where younger investors are favoring crypto over more conventional investments. In Indonesia, for example, digital asset investors reached 20 million this year, far surpassing the 12 million who trade on the country’s stock exchange. In the U.S., a recent Bank of America survey reported a similar trend, with younger investors increasingly gravitating toward digital assets.Photo by Burak Karaduman on PexelsHigh returns and future potential drive interest in digital assetsThe survey shows that Turkish investors are primarily attracted to digital assets for their high return potential, while some view them as the future of finance. Other motivations include fast transaction capabilities, as well as benefits like censorship resistance. According to Paribu’s spokesperson, Nergis Nurcan Karababa, crypto assets may experience higher adoption rates than traditional financial products, as more individuals anticipate mainstream usage of digital assets in the near future. Security a top priority for Turkish investorsSecurity remains a paramount concern for Turkish investors, particularly given the history of hacks and fraud targeting local exchanges. Paribu’s survey, which polled over 2,000 residents and 541 active traders, found that most Turkish investors demand a strong security system from their trading platforms. In recent years, Turkish exchanges have been targeted by hackers, with high-profile breaches impacting investor confidence. In June, an attack on BtcTurk, the country’s largest exchange, reportedly led to a $55 million loss from multiple hot wallets. An earlier collapse of the Thodex exchange in 2021 saw the disappearance of investor funds valued by Chainalysis at $2.6 billion, although local prosecutors cited a lower figure. Thodex’s founder was sentenced to over 11,000 years in prison, underscoring the severity of crypto-related financial crimes in Turkey. Rise in preference for local exchangesDespite security incidents, Turkish investors increasingly favor local exchanges, with 78% indicating a preference for Turkey-based platforms in 2024, up from 63% last year. This trend aligns with a global shift towards domestic exchanges as investors seek platforms regulated by local authorities, providing easier avenues for legal recourse. The collapse of international platforms like FTX has accelerated this trend, and countries such as Nigeria, India and Indonesia have issued new licenses exclusively for local exchanges, restricting foreign entities from operating within their borders. Turkey’s leading position in the MENA crypto marketTurkey ranks as the largest digital asset market in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and is 11th globally in terms of adoption, according to Chainalysis. Between June 2023 and June 2024, Turkey received $137 billion in digital assets, placing it seventh worldwide for total transaction volume. This growing market highlights Turkey’s role as a key player in the global crypto landscape, as well as the increasing integration of digital assets into mainstream financial activities among Turkish investors.

AndUs to implement ZK rollups on Its public permissionless blockchain

AndUs to implement ZK rollups on Its public permissionless blockchainAndUs, the South Korean developer of public permissionless blockchain Anduschain, announced on Wednesday (local time) that it is preparing to implement zero-knowledge (ZK) rollup technology into its blockchain to enhance scalability and security. ZK rollups are layer-2 scaling solutions that move transactions off-chain to increase throughput on the Ethereum mainnet.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashPerspective on ZK rollupsMany Korean projects are focused on developing various layer-2 solutions. Against this backdrop, Park Sung-jun, CEO of AndUs and a Ph.D. in cryptography, believes ZK rollups will eventually surpass the currently popular optimistic rollups as the mainstream technology. Although both ZK and optimistic rollups improve scalability by processing transactions off-chain, they differ in their approaches: ZK rollups rely on validity proofs, while optimistic rollups utilize fraud proofs.Introduction next yearHolding this belief, AndUs has formulated a ZK rollup implementation plan and has begun its development, aiming to introduce it by next year. Park commented that this upgrade will significantly improve the blockchain’s speed and expressed plans to offer the world’s lowest gas fees.AndUs claims that their DEB consensus algorithm focuses on fairness, enabling nodes to engage in mining without preconditions. Furthermore, Anduschain’s ZK rollups will be fully compatible with Ethereum virtual machines (EVMs), facilitating a seamless transition of decentralized applications (dApps). The cryptocurrency used on Anduschain is named DEB, and it is currently listed on cryptocurrency exchanges ProBit Global and MEXC, according to CoinMarketCap.AndUs has been participating in the Tech Incubator Program for Startups (TIPS) program, which is led by private investments under the guidance of the Korean Ministry of SMEs and Startups.
