Web3 & Enterprise·May 15, 2023, 12:09 AM

Taiwan-based Comma3 Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on Web3, has closed funding on a $45 million Web3 fund.

The raise was achieved through the participation of a diverse range of institutional investors, high net worth individuals and family offices based in Taiwan and Singapore.

In a press release published on Friday, the company stated that the funds raised will be allocated to blockchain infrastructure projects at an early stage of development, focusing on dApps, zero-knowledge proof technology, cross chain bridging projects, as well as layer one and layer two blockchain networks.

Singapore ties

While Taiwan-based, the venture capital has strong ties with Singapore, given that Nicole Liu, one of the firm’s general partners, was formerly an investment manager with Jubilee Capital Management.

Liu leads the firm alongside fellow general partners, Ivan Li and Denny Yang. Among the previous projects the trio have invested in are Zilliqa, a smart contract blockchain network that focuses on throughput and scalability, Ethereum layer two side-chain network Polygon, South Korean enterprise blockchain Klaytn, blockchain-based esport game producer Thetan Arena, and a project called Highstreet which seeks to re-imagine retail in the metaverse.

Earlier this month, Cetus, a decentralized exchange (DEX) and concentrated liquidity protocol built on the Sui and Aptos blockchains, secured funding from Comma3 Ventures, alongside AC Capital, Adaverse, Animoca Brands, Coin98 Ventures, IDG Capital, KuCoin Ventures, Leland Ventures, NGC Ventures and OKX.

Funding 80 to 100 Web3 start-ups

According to Comma3 Ventures, crypto start-ups that have the potential to scale within the Web3 space within niches such as DeFi and GameFi, will be prioritized for funding. With a spend of $45 million at its disposal, the venture capital firm intends to target around eighty to one hundred start-ups, with a capital funding variance of between $250,000 to $1 million depending on the particular project.

In a press release Liu stated: “We regard ourselves as an early-stage investor, so team background and previous experience are very important for us. And on the other hand, we are looking for entrepreneurs who really know what blockchain and Web3 are and how to rebuild their businesses empowered by decentralization technology and token economics. We are dedicating ourselves to investing in and supporting early-stage blockchain infrastructure such as L1&L2, cross-chain, and ZK, as well as DAPPs with the potential to bring traffic to Web3, such as DeFi, GameFi, and creator economies.”

In a 2021 podcast, Ivan Li explained that his first allocations in the crypto space were to Bitcoin and Ethereum. Those successful investments were reinvested and allocated to blockchain, data analysis and cyber security projects. From 2021 onwards, Li explained that institutions in the TradFi space in Taipei started to approach him with an interest in trying to get exposure to crypto. That led to him forming Red Building Capital in 2018. Comma3 Ventures followed in 2022.

OCBC Bank Partners With ADDX to Launch Tokenized Note

OCBC Bank Partners With ADDX to Launch Tokenized NoteSingapore’s longest established bank, OCBC Bank, has partnered with blockchain-centric private market investment platform, ADDX, to launch a tokenized equity-linked structured note.Tokenized equity-based productsThe product is significant in that it represents the first tokenized equity-linked structured note that the cornerstone bank has offered. That in itself gives an indication of how conventional finance will mesh with tokenized products as both the conventional finance system and digital assets space evolve over the coming years. An equity-linked note is a debt instrument, normally in the form of a bond. It’s distinct from a standard fixed income security as it’s a market-linked structured product. That means that it performs in sync with a particular equity stock, a basket of equity stocks or with an equity index.ADDX CEO Oi-Yee Choo elaborated on the product offering: “Structured products are designed to provide investors with unique risk and return characteristics that may not be available through traditional investments, and are an attractive option for investors weighing yield-generating options in the current economic climate.”Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashLeveraging tokenizationBy leveraging tokenization, the ADDX platform realizes cost savings, cutting out counterparties from the process. Additionally, tokenization allows fractionalization of assets and financial products, making a product offering accessible to all market participants. In this particular instance, the OCDC/ADDX product is restricted solely to accredited investors.Singapore-based ADDX currently lists in excess of seventy tokenized products on its platform right now. These range from commercial paper, bonds, real estate and equities or equity-based products. On those products it has collaborated with global alternative investment product specialists Investcorp and Hamilton Lane, telecommunications giant Singtel and securities broker CGS-CIMB Securities. Additionally, it has partnered with UOB, Singapore’s third largest bank, and a number of entities owned by state-owned Singaporean investing giant, Temasek. While the conventional finance world has been skeptical of digital assets and the overarching cryptocurrency and blockchain space has had its fair share of setbacks interlaced within its progression, forward-looking TradFi players are conscious of not getting left behind. That’s reflected in the comments of OCBC Bank’s Head of Global Treasury, Kenneth Lai, in relation to the ADDX partnership:”While we already have a comprehensive stable of treasury products which includes sustainability-linked interest rate swaps, cross currency swaps, structured deposits and green bonds, it is important that we continue to innovate and find new channels for our products. We are therefore pleased to be the first Singapore bank to offer an equity-linked structured note in tokenized form on ADDX. It is the first innovation resulting from a longer-term partnership with ADDX, and we are hopeful that it will lead to more diverse product offerings that are relevant and appealing to the global accredited investor base of ADDX.”Further comments by Choo suggest that the two firms have plans to broaden the partnership to encompass a greater range of products. She referred to more structured products being in the pipeline as the duo seek to exploit their combined expertise and capabilities. As it stands today, just $0.3 trillion in global assets are currently tokenized. That number is expected to grow to $16 trillion within seven years.

Crypto community optimism across Asia following Trump’s election victory

Recognition of Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 6 has led to many crypto proponents in Asia foreseeing a positive outcome for crypto within the Asian region, and globally.Photo by Kevin Lanceplaine on UnsplashBright future for cryptoAccording to a report published by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), crypto proponents in China are expectant of a bright future for crypto both on the Chinese mainland and in Hong Kong. The mindset seems to be that a pro-crypto stance in the U.S. will lead to other jurisdictions taking a similar approach. HashKey CEO Livio Weng expressed such a view, stating:“Trump’s pro-crypto stance is expected not only to invigorate the US virtual-asset industry, but also to encourage Hong Kong to further relax its own virtual-asset policies in its quest to become a global Web3 hub.”  Prior to being elected, Trump had promised to fire Gary Gensler, who as Chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has pursued a strategy of regulation by enforcement, a course of action that has been broadly criticized by crypto market participants in the United States. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse wasted no time in calling on Trump to act, and to fire Gensler. Influencing regulatory attitudesThere seems to be a consensus among commentators that the regulatory approach to crypto in the U.S. is going to become crypto-friendly. Crypto analyst Miles Deutscher suggests that “a Trump victory is a WIN for US tech innovation, as it would solidify [the United States’] status as a crypto powerhouse.” Weng believes that “this shift could also positively influence regulatory attitudes toward virtual assets in mainland China.” That view is mirrored in South Korea by KP Jang, head of Xangle Research. Jang asserts that “if Trump implements bold virtual asset policies while improving existing regulations, it is expected to accelerate regulatory reforms in Korea as well.” Sumit Gupta, CEO and co-founder of India’s largest crypto exchange, CoinDCX, outlined on X that Trump’s victory is a pivotal moment for global crypto, adding:”The direct effects of Trump’s policies might not alter India’s regulatory environment right away. However, global sentiment and investor behaviour will be influenced, eventually reaching India.” The CoinDCX CEO believes that should Trump now appoint regulatory leadership that’s crypto-positive, any resultant crypto regulatory framework adopted by the U.S. could become a blueprint for use by other nations. Gupta identified further potential upside insofar as the implementation of positive crypto policies by Trump would lead to a more attractive environment for crypto, “potentially opening up enhanced funding opportunities and partnerships for Indian startups as investors seek global growth.” Bitcoin price surgeAt the time of writing, the Bitcoin unit price is up 0.64% over the course of the past 24 hours, at $74,884. American business news channel CNBC reported that Bitcoin could reach $100,000 before Trump even takes office.  Matthew Hougan, chief investment officer (CIO) at crypto asset fund manager Bitwise, said that Trump’s election victory could herald in a “golden age of crypto,” with a friendlier regulatory environment leading to greater institutional investment and mainstream adoption.

Bitfinex Forges Strategic Partnership with Zodia Custody

Bitfinex Forges Strategic Partnership with Zodia CustodyCryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex has formed a strategic partnership with digital assets custodian Zodia Custody to fortify the security of its institutional clients’ assets. The deal struck with Zodia Custody, a subsidiary of the UK multinational banking titan Standard Chartered, aligns with a growing trend within the digital assets sector, one that emphasizes separating asset custody from trading activities. Such a division will result in heightened security measures while better meeting regulatory compliance.Photo by Ketut Subiyanto on PexelsSecuring digital assetsThis collaboration provides an opportunity for institutional clients who maintain accounts with both Bitfinex and Zodia Custody. They can now seamlessly replicate their custodial assets on Bitfinex’s cutting-edge trading platform, all while basking in the security offered by Zodia’s off-exchange settlement solution, aptly named Interchange. With this innovation, the need for actual asset transfers becomes obsolete as the settlement process unfolds periodically on the blockchain. This approach not only ensures efficiency but also provides greater security when interacting with the platform.Industry trendBitfinex’s move towards segregating trading and custodial functions aligns with best practices in the crypto industry but also signifies a wider trend observed among cryptocurrency exchanges as they increasingly adopt a more conventional approach akin to traditional financial institutions.Paolo Ardoino, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Bitfinex, shared the exchange’s perspective, stating:“We are committed to shaping the future of digital market infrastructure and enabling institutional customers to thrive in this space. Working with Zodia Custody is a significant part of that strategy, and together we can look to enable even more institutions to enter or further participate in digital assets.”This partnership serves as a testament to Bitfinex’s continuous efforts to collaborate with reputable custodians, building upon past successful alliances with firms like Koine in 2020 and Digivault in 2022.The significance of segregating asset custody from trading operations has taken on greater importance, primarily in the aftermath of the collapse of FTX, where management gambled with customer’s assets.Zodia’s market expansionZodia Custody, with the backing of Standard Chartered Bank, has recently expanded its footprint into Singapore, offering digital asset custody services to financial institutions in the burgeoning Asian market. Not content with that, in May it launched its crypto custodian service in Dubai. The following month the fledgling firm announced a partnership with blockchain infrastructure firm Blockdaemon relative to crypto staking for institutional clients. There’s been no let up in the firm’s roll-out of services as earlier this month it commenced a yield offering on stablecoins in partnership with Singapore-based DeFi platform OpenEden.Bitfinex’s history includes one of the most infamous hacks in the cryptocurrency sphere, with the pilfering of 120,000 BTC, now valued at over $3 billion. Nevertheless, the exchange has undergone a transformative journey and presently boasts an extensive array of cryptocurrencies and trading pairs. As the regulatory landscape continues to evolve, the practice of separating custody from trading is poised to become a standard procedure, further enhancing the legitimacy and security of the cryptocurrency market.
