Artifact Labs Raises $3.25M

Web3 & Enterprise·May 09, 2023, 12:15 AM

Artifact Labs, a Hong Kong-based start-up company that concerns itself with Web3 and metaverse products from leading brands, has raised $3.25 million in a recent funding round.

The NFT-focused company, which was spun out of Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) in 2022, has received funding from Blue Pool Capital and Animoca Ventures, with Blue Pool leading the funding round. Blue Pool Capital is the investment vehicle of Alibaba founders Jack Ma and Joe Tsai.

The company was borne out of a decision taken by the SCMP in 2021 to launch an NFT standard called artifact, which was geared toward recording historical data. Its starting point in that endeavor was the sale of NFTs of its very own historical front pages. That included iconic historical snapshots such as the return of Hong Kong to the Chinese in 1997, the outbreak of avian flu, the onset of the Asian financial crisis and the death of the UK's Princess Diana in 1997.

Expansion of operations

Artifact Labs has said that it intends to use the funding to expand company operations. Executing on that, the firm intends to fill multiple developer positions.

Phillip Pon, CEO of Artifact Labs commented on the development via a press release:

“It’s not about creating new IPs for speculation — for example NFT hype projects — it’s about driving new engagement with historically significant collections by using Web3. We want to carve new space in the younger public’s consciousness for historical brands and artifacts, while supporting these important organizations with new revenue streams to fund their preservation work, we are also solidifying immutable on-chain data preservation through NFTs.”

It appears that the firm will release NFT collections on behalf of preservation organizations, while at the same time developing technology to assist institutions in preserving their archives on the blockchain.

NFTs with inherent value

Last year, Artifact Labs Founder and former CEO of the SCMP, Gary Liu, said in an interview that NFTs need to contain a certain inherent value beyond just being endorsed by a number of people. Liu stated: “There has to be intrinsic value in the asset itself or the underlying asset that it represents. That’s what is going to drive NFT innovation.”

That philosophy is borne out by one of Artifact’s recent collaborations. In February, the firm partnered with RMS Titanic, Inc, a company that’s dedicated to preserving the legacy of the infamous sunken ship. Central to the partnership was an intention to mint NFTs based upon over 5,500 artifacts that have been recovered from the sunken wreckage.

In January Artifact Labs partnered with Dubai-based data intelligence and marketing technology firm, MEmob+. The objective of the firms in teaming up is to have the complete range of expertise necessary between them in order to offer brands and companies a strategic advisory service when it comes to delving into the metaverse. Artifact’s art platform Materia, will be harnessed by MEmob+ to assist brands who want to develop art projects in the metaverse.

Chainlink partners with Abu Dhabi’s ADGM on tokenization framework development

Chainlink, a prominent decentralized oracle network, has partnered with the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), a free zone and international financial center located on Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with a view towards further developing tokenization frameworks.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashCompliant tokenization frameworksAccording to an announcement on the ADGM website, the international financial center signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Chainlink. It claimed that the collaboration marks “a major step in advancing compliant tokenisation frameworks.” Chainlink provides a suite of services. Central to that is the delivery of real-world data feeds into blockchain networks. ADGM believes that through the partnership, projects located within the free zone will be able to access this technology, while the ADGM’s Registration Authority will ensure regulatory compliance. The CEO of the ADGM Registration Authority, Hamad Sayah Al Mazrouei, said that the strategic alliance is a significant step towards ADGM leadership in blockchain innovation. He added: “By collaborating with Chainlink, we are aiming to set a global benchmark that spearheads transparency, security, and trust across the blockchain space.” The collaboration includes plans to host events and workshops aimed at educating the blockchain sector within the UAE. The two parties also aspire to the initiative, sparking greater dialogue on regulatory matters relative to blockchain, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. Global collaborationsThis is the latest in a long list of collaborations that Chainlink has entered into, relative to asset tokenization. In October, it partnered with Singapore’s DigiFT, an exchange dedicated to tokenized real-world assets (RWAs). The following month, it completed a pilot program alongside financial messaging service SWIFT and UBS Asset Management under the umbrella of the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s (MAS) Project Guardian. The project concerned itself with the settlement of tokenized funds. Earlier in 2024, Chainlink partnered with U.S. financial market infrastructure firm DTCC on the Smart NAV pilot project. The initiative centered on the creation and issuance of tokenized funds, counting JPMorgan, State Street, BNY Mellon, Invesco and Franklin Templeton among its participants. In the UAE, Chainlink has been added as a member of the Digital Asset Lab of one of the country’s largest banking groups, Emirates NBD. For its part, the ADGM has also been on the front foot with regard to tokenization initiatives. Its Regulatory Authority has established a regulatory framework with regard to asset tokenization, with an emphasis on investor protection. In October of last year, RWA tokenization platform Realize launched the financial center’s first tokenized U.S. treasury bill fund. At the time, the ADGM said that the development highlighted an objective for the region in becoming the global market leader where RWA tokenization is concerned. The ADGM began operations in 2015 with its own legal system. As of the end of 2024, the financial center hosted 134 fund and asset managers. Market maker and Web3 investment firm DWF Labs moved its headquarters from Singapore to Abu Dhabi’s ADGM at the end of last year, citing the goal of wanting to expand tokenized RWA-based projects as one of the reasons for the move.

South Korea’s DPK to propose crypto bill with $3.58M stablecoin reserve minimum

South Korea's Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) plans to introduce a bill this week aimed at establishing a legal framework for digital assets, according to Edaily. The move is part of the party's ongoing efforts to advance its crypto policy agenda ahead of the upcoming presidential election. The proposed law would define the legal status of digital assets and set rules for their issuance, distribution and listing. The bill is expected to keep the requirement for Korean won-pegged stablecoin issuers to obtain authorization with a minimum reserve of 5 billion won ($3.58 million), a key point of debate.Photo by Brady Bellini on UnsplashA DPK official stated that the bill has been drafted and is set to be introduced to the National Assembly this week, following feedback from internal subcommittees. Most of the provisions remain consistent with last month’s draft, but final comments are still being collected on stablecoin reserve requirements, which have been a major point of discussion. Defining digital assetsThe bill defines digital assets as "electronic records with economic value based on blockchain technology" and establishes a regulatory framework for issuers, exchanges and custodians. Key provisions include permitting initial coin offerings (ICOs) and creating a digital asset committee under the Financial Services Commission (FSC). This committee would oversee legal framework design, market monitoring, and policy promotion. Additionally, an industry association will establish a separate committee to oversee token listing practices, ensuring consistent listing standards across exchanges. The most contentious part of the draft has been the regulations for won-based stablecoins. It classifies stablecoins as digital assets akin to fiat currency, requiring a minimum reserve of 5 billion won and authorization from the FSC. It also mandates real-time reserve disclosures, secure asset custody and quarterly reporting. Divide over stablecoin reserve requirementOpinions on the reserve requirement are divided. Some industry insiders argue that the 5 billion won threshold is too high, creating a barrier for startups. Others believe a minimum capital requirement is necessary due to stablecoins' role in payments and their potential as currency substitutes. Lee Jung-yup, president of the Blockchain Law Society, stressed that stablecoins must maintain a basic level of trust, warning that those failing to meet the 5 billion won threshold could become prone to insolvency or fraud. However, Lee acknowledged concerns about the centralized regulatory approach led by financial authorities and the potential for market dominance by large corporations. He suggested exploring the creation of an independent regulatory body for cryptocurrencies, warning that overly strict regulations could stifle domestic digital finance innovation amid growing global competition. Crime surges with market growthWhile regulations continue to evolve, crypto crimes are also rising sharply amid the expanding digital asset market. According to Segye Ilbo, South Korean police arrested about 2,100 individuals for crypto-related offenses last year—17 times more than in 2017, when data collection began. The total losses from such crimes now exceed 1 trillion won ($714 million) annually. Since the election of U.S. President Donald Trump, known for his crypto-friendly stance, Korea's crypto market has experienced rapid growth. This surge has raised concerns about an increase in fraud targeting investors chasing quick profits.
