Artifact Labs Raises $3.25M

Artifact Labs, a Hong Kong-based start-up company that concerns itself with Web3 and metaverse products from leading brands, has raised $3.25 million in a recent funding round.

The NFT-focused company, which was spun out of Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) in 2022, has received funding from Blue Pool Capital and Animoca Ventures, with Blue Pool leading the funding round. Blue Pool Capital is the investment vehicle of Alibaba founders Jack Ma and Joe Tsai.

The company was borne out of a decision taken by the SCMP in 2021 to launch an NFT standard called artifact, which was geared toward recording historical data. Its starting point in that endeavor was the sale of NFTs of its very own historical front pages. That included iconic historical snapshots such as the return of Hong Kong to the Chinese in 1997, the outbreak of avian flu, the onset of the Asian financial crisis and the death of the UK's Princess Diana in 1997.

 

Expansion of operations

Artifact Labs has said that it intends to use the funding to expand company operations. Executing on that, the firm intends to fill multiple developer positions.

Phillip Pon, CEO of Artifact Labs commented on the development via a press release:

“It’s not about creating new IPs for speculation — for example NFT hype projects — it’s about driving new engagement with historically significant collections by using Web3. We want to carve new space in the younger public’s consciousness for historical brands and artifacts, while supporting these important organizations with new revenue streams to fund their preservation work, we are also solidifying immutable on-chain data preservation through NFTs.”

It appears that the firm will release NFT collections on behalf of preservation organizations, while at the same time developing technology to assist institutions in preserving their archives on the blockchain.

 

NFTs with inherent value

Last year, Artifact Labs Founder and former CEO of the SCMP, Gary Liu, said in an interview that NFTs need to contain a certain inherent value beyond just being endorsed by a number of people. Liu stated: “There has to be intrinsic value in the asset itself or the underlying asset that it represents. That’s what is going to drive NFT innovation.”

That philosophy is borne out by one of Artifact’s recent collaborations. In February, the firm partnered with RMS Titanic, Inc, a company that’s dedicated to preserving the legacy of the infamous sunken ship. Central to the partnership was an intention to mint NFTs based upon over 5,500 artifacts that have been recovered from the sunken wreckage.

In January Artifact Labs partnered with Dubai-based data intelligence and marketing technology firm, MEmob+. The objective of the firms in teaming up is to have the complete range of expertise necessary between them in order to offer brands and companies a strategic advisory service when it comes to delving into the metaverse. Artifact’s art platform Materia, will be harnessed by MEmob+ to assist brands who want to develop art projects in the metaverse.

Binance survey reveals evolving security habits of Asian platform users

Global crypto exchange Binance has carried out a survey which reveals that the security habits of Asian platform users are evolving positively.Photo by Vadim Artyukhin on UnsplashUsers responding to more sophisticated scamsIn a blog post published by the crypto exchange platform on May 6, Binance revealed that it had carried out a survey of nearly 30,000 platform users across Asia. The company’s takeaway following analysis of the survey data is that “scams are evolving — and so are crypto users.” The firm suggested that users are “stepping up their security game,” with exchanges facing growing demand from their users for real-time protection and smarter security tools. Increasing use of 2FAThe exchange platform found that 80.5% of survey respondents now use Binance two-factor authentication (2FA). While the use of 2FA is definitely a move in the right direction, it doesn’t guarantee the safety of a user’s digital assets.  In an article published by Forbes last month Forbes Contributor Davey Winder warned that infostealer malware can compromise 2FA codes in as little as 10 seconds. In June of last year, an OKX user lost $2 million in crypto to a hacker who utilized AI despite the victim having used Google’s 2FA. Double-checking transfersThe survey found that 73.3% of users double-check transfers before sending digital assets. Due to the nature of decentralized cryptocurrency, crypto transactions are not easily reversed and are usually irreversible. That puts a greater responsibility on crypto users to ensure that they are sending funds to the appropriate wallet address. Double-checking transfer addresses is not only necessary due to human error. Malware is also used by hackers to spoof such addresses, tricking the sender into sending the digital assets to their address rather than the one that was originally intended. It emerged in May 2024 that a Bitcoin trader had lost more than $70 million in Bitcoin in an “address poisoning” scam. Binance itself had warned users last September that “clipper malware,” which intercepts clipboard data on a user’s phone or desktop, replacing copied wallet addresses with alternative addresses under the hacker’s control, is increasingly being employed in hacking attempts. While the survey has revealed a positive evolution in the security habits of Asian platform users, there’s still room for further improvement. Just 17.6% of survey respondents utilize address whitelisting, a measure that restricts account user access to a safe list of pre-defined trusted addresses. Only 21.5% of survey respondents use anti-phishing codes as a security mechanism. The objective of phishing is to steal data, install malware on a user’s device or otherwise gain account access. An anti-phishing code aids the user in verifying the authenticity of emails and texts from a specific service. Security remains a major issue within crypto. Last month, hackers employed social engineering tactics to steal $330 million in Bitcoin from an elderly American victim. Exchange platforms themselves continue to struggle to safeguard user funds. Earlier this year, Binance competitor, Dubai-headquartered Bybit, suffered a $1.5 billion hack believed to have been perpetrated by North Korea’s Lazarus Group. Lazarus is also thought to have been behind a $235 million crypto theft at Indian crypto exchange WazirX in July 2024.

Riley Financial, through a share purchase deal. B. Riley will possess the option, albeit not the obligation, to procure a designated quantity of Bitdeer’s shares over a span of three years. Parameters of this agreement include a maximum acquisition of either 1 million shares or 25% of the shares of Bitdeer traded on the Nasdaq throughout this stipulated purchase timeframe.The filing states: “Pursuant to the Purchase Agreement, the Company has the right to sell to B. Riley Principal Capital II, up to US$150,000,000 of its Class A ordinary shares, par value US$0.0000001 per share (the “Class A Ordinary Shares”), subject to certain limitations and conditions set forth in the Purchase Agreement.”Amplified voting privilegesIn essence, this arrangement affords B. Riley a distinct position within Bitdeer’s echelons. Class A shares, which typically elude public trading, grant shareholders amplified voting privileges in contrast to their Class B counterparts. Ergo, this deal furnishes B. Riley with a tangible stake in the domain of crypto mining.Underpinning this transaction, Bitdeer has committed to compensating B. Riley with 0.5% of the deal’s total value in acknowledgment of its commitment to procuring these shares. Additionally, B. Riley will be indemnified for legal expenses and outlays, extending up to a cap of $50,000.Broader mining interestIt’s not the first time that B. Riley has shown an interest in crypto mining. It signed a $100 million equity deal with Iris Energy last year. Additionally, it’s one of the largest creditors of Core Scientific.Noteworthy is the fact that Bitdeer embarked on its journey to public status via a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) deal with Blue Safari Group back in April. This strategic maneuver enabled Bitdeer to become public without taking the conventional route of an initial public offering (IPO).Marking a departure from the throes of the crypto winter, this SPAC deal entailed the fusion of a special purpose acquisition company with a private entity. Bitdeer’s subsequent Nasdaq debut wasn’t without its problems. Investors were lukewarm in the interest shown in the Bitdeer proposition, resulting in an immediate 30% price drop.Bhutan mining collaborationNotably, Bitdeer made headlines when it inked a partnership with Druk Holding and Investments (DHI) in May, signifying a collective stride towards establishing an ecologically-conscious, carbon-neutral digital asset mining venture within the realm of the Kingdom of Bhutan.Rooted in the visionary pursuits of Jihan Wu, the former Co-Founder of Bitmain, Bitdeer is distinguished for its cloud-mining services, a pursuit realized through its data centers stationed in Tennessee, Washington, and Texas. The company’s most recent operations report attests to the mining of 220 Bitcoin (BTC) via its self-mining enterprise in July, constituting an impressive year-over-year escalation of 41%.
