Korean Game Developers to Benefit from Higher NFT Trading Volume

Web3 & Enterprise·April 19, 2023, 3:49 AM

Korean game companies preparing to launch web 3.0 games are expected to benefit from the higher non-fungible token (NFT) trading volume, according to Korean news outlet Financial News.

A report from decentralized app analytics platform DappRadar states that the NFT trading volume reached $4.7 billion in the first quarter this year, up 137.04% from the previous quarter. This volume is the highest since the second quarter of 2022.

This year’s strong NFT market so far is good news for Korean game developers, which were negatively affected by a slowdown in the crypto industry last year due to various factors, including the Terra USD collapse and the bankruptcy of crypto exchange FTX.

In fact, many game and content companies are expanding their ecosystems by tokenizing their game items and intellectual property (IP) rights.

Nexon

One such example is Nexon, the developer of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game MapleStory. Based on its IP rights, Nexon is creating the MapleStory Universe, an NFT-based blockchain ecosystem. The MapleStory Universe will enable trading of NFTs, which users can obtain while hunting or accomplishing quests. Its first major project, a personal computer game named “MapleStory N,” will be launched to attract gamers worldwide.

Netmarble

Netmarble, another Korean game company, will launch Modoo Marble 2: Metaworld on Wednesday for global gamers. The popular mobile board game will be rolled out on the MBX ecosystem operated by Netmarble’s blockchain subsidiary Marblex. Participation in the board game and involvement in the Metaworld would allow users to earn Meta Cash as rewards, which can then be swapped for different virtual assets. The trade of buildings and land within the game would likely be facilitated through the use of NFTs.

Com2uS Holdings

Cultural content company Com2uS Holdings is also making its own efforts to expand its blockchain ecosystem. Its subsidiary Com2uS Platform recently forged a partnership with animation firm Daewon Media to strengthen its NFT business based on Daewon’s popular IP rights.

A game industry official said NFT trading can address issues that caused concerns for gamers who doubted the legitimacy and price of items they traded. The official further elaborated that incorporating elements like NFTs and the metaverse would enhance the gaming experience and excitement for gaming enthusiasts.

Shinhan Card to launch NFT-based art-tech service next year

Shinhan Card to launch NFT-based art-tech service next yearSouth Korean credit card company Shinhan Card is set to launch its art-tech service dubbed “Prestige Collection” next year, according to Park Young-woong of the Digital R&D team during his presentation at the seventh annual Shinhan Future’s Lab Demo Day event held in Seoul on Wednesday.Photo by Yi Liu on UnsplashDigitizing investments in artArt-tech — a portmanteau of art and money management technology — refers to an investment method that involves purchasing or owning artworks as assets and earning profits from their sales.“We are planning to launch our art-tech service next year, which will include exhibition recommendations, NFT ticketing and NFT art warranties to work in tandem with Shinhan Card’s payment services,” Park said. He also mentioned that it is currently undergoing legal evaluations.Making event access more efficientThe inception of this upcoming release started in September, when Shinhan carried out a collaborative proof of concept (PoC) mechanism with two member startups from the ninth installment of its Future’s Lab startup acceleration program, Art Map and SnapTag.Art Map is an art curation service put together by a team of database experts, software developers, artists, curators and designers that gathers metadata based on users’ preferences to recommend exhibitions and other art-related events for them to enjoy. On the other hand, SnapTag offers a variety of services based on its patented invisible watermark technology dubbed LAB Code. LAB Code is able to create an encrypted code by subtly converting image pixels of items like product packages, photos and illustrations and applying those files to printing or production processes without damaging or changing the original image.Last month, Art Map and SnapTag used their respective technologies to work with Shinhan Card to issue and verify blockchain-based NFT tickets for the Sneakers Unboxed special exhibition held at the Sejong Museum of Art. Shinhan was responsible for minting NFTs as tickets for exhibitions promoted on Art Map’s platform, which could be issued and stored on the My NFT section on Shinhan’s mobile app ShinhanpLay. Visitors would then be able to use SnapTag’s digital check-in service Keefo to enter the exhibition. This NFT ticketing system was proven to be a time-efficient and secure alternative to traditional ticketing procedures, which come with several inconveniences like long wait lines, delayed entry, illegal ticket resells and monopolization of customer data by major ticketing conglomerates. This is especially true for music performances by famous artists, where competition during ticket sales can become intense.“Our NFT ticketing service will evolve into an art-tech management service that focuses on art,” Park explained. “Prestige Collection will leverage Art Map’s art concierge platform, SnapTag’s LAB Code technology and Shinhan Card’s My NFT service.”

SUI hits new ATH following blockchain academy collaboration

The SUI token has surged to an all-time high (ATH) price after the revelation of the project’s partnership with the American University of Sharjah (AUS) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to establish the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy. SUI is the native token of the Sui blockchain, a layer one blockchain network and smart contract platform that’s striving to make digital asset ownership private, secure and accessible. The AUS-Sui Blockchain AcademyAccording to a press release published via regional news media outlet Zawya on Monday, the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy is situated within the multidisciplinary Center of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainable Development, within the AUS. It’s been set out to align with the principles of entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainability with the objective of fostering responsible and impactful technological advancement relative to blockchain. The Academy aims to equip the next generation of leaders and innovators with the necessary knowledge to harness Web3 technology so as to address future global challenges. Dr. Greg Siourouni, Managing Director of the Sui Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the blockchain education initiative, emphasizing its role in advancing Sharjah's goal of becoming a leading educational and research hub.Photo by Ainur Kamaev on UnsplashPrice surgeIn response to the announcement, SUI's token price has surged. While it’s up 4% over the course of the past 24 hours, the token is now standing at a record-high unit price of $1.79 since its launch in May 2023. The positive momentum in SUI's price underscores market enthusiasm for the layer-1 blockchain platform's educational initiatives. However, other in-roads being made by the project may also be playing a role. Last September the project launched zkLogin, a Web3 authentication solution that enables dApp users to login using social media accounts. The following month, the Sui Foundation announced a $50 million ecosystem fund in an effort to bolster growth relative to the Sui network. AUS and SUI blockchain education initiativesThis latest initiative is part of Sharjah's vision to position itself as a regional powerhouse for education and research, particularly in the realm of technology and blockchain. It’s not the first blockchain-centric collaboration that the university has engaged in. In June of last year, Dubai-headquartered crypto spot and derivatives trading platform Bybit partnered with AUS to establish a scholarship fund of $272,000. That endeavor is supporting fintech and blockchain studies for the benefit of 20 students. The Sui Foundation too has established a track record where educational initiatives are concerned. It has previously introduced several programs, including a Web3-focused curriculum at the Wheeler Institute for Business and Development at the London Business School. Additionally, it awarded $400,000 in Sui Academic Research Awards (SARAs) to 15 universities worldwide and introduced a Web3 curriculum for high school students. SUI's partnership with AUS to establish the AUS-Sui Blockchain Academy reflects its commitment to advancing education and innovation in the blockchain space, while its price surge is suggestive of market optimism for its future endeavors.
