Web3 & Enterprise·December 13, 2023, 9:09 AM

LINE NEXT, the NFT business arm of Tokyo-based Internet giant LINE Corporation, has secured a $140 million investment from a consortium led by Seoul-based private equity firm Crescendo Equity Partners, according to an official press release on Wednesday (KST). This is the largest investment in the Asian blockchain and Web3 industry this year.

“LINE’s global competitiveness and its vision to lead Web3 services were the investment thesis,” said Kevin Lee, Managing Partner at Crescendo. “We hope to build a standard for Web3 apps that general users can easily use and adopt blockchain to all sorts of services and brands of Web2.”

Ambitious roadmap

LINE NEXT plans to use the funds to popularize Web3 by expanding its global platform and developing new services. This includes the official launch of DOSI, a global mobile NFT marketplace app for trading digital products, which will be integrated with LINE’s Japanese NFT marketplace LINE NFT. The launch is scheduled for January next year.

The firm will also enable Web2 services and brands to easily adopt Web3 technology by providing new solutions that allow them to directly own and trade digital products.

To further promote the widespread adoption of Web3 technology, LINE NEXT plans to create an app that utilizes AI technology to facilitate communication between users via characters they create themselves, as well as a new Web3 game featuring iconic LINE characters. These services will be developed on the public blockchain Finschia.

LINE NEXT and Crescendo will also participate as governance council members of the Finschia Foundation and contribute to the expansion of the ecosystem.

Strategic investment

Ko Young-su, CEO of LINE NEXT, pointed out that such a large-scale investment is a major step considering the global investment environment has recently been shrinking. “We plan to use this opportunity to further popularize Web3 and develop a new service ecosystem where users own the value of their digital goods,” he said.

Sponsored by Peter Thiel — the co-founder of Paypal, Palantir Technologies and Founders Fund — Crescendo is dedicated to discovering and investing in promising technology companies both in South Korea and overseas.

The TON Foundation is already canvassing projects to participate and apply for funding.Successful applicants will be offered between $50,000 and $250,000. The scheme goes beyond funding. Projects will also get to avail of mentorship from partners like GotBit, a consulting service targeted at blockchain start-ups. Growth advisory firm Web3Port will also be available to successful candidates in that mentorship role.UAE-based multi-strategy crypto investment firm Cypher Capital will also be at the disposal of the TON-based start-ups, while they will also have the ability to access the Tonstarter launchpad. Additionally, the scheme features participation from East Asia, with South Korea-based Boom Labs, an incubator for Web3 developers, lending its support.Justin Hyun, Head of Incubation and Growth at the TON Foundation, had this to say about the development:“This is the beginning of many different incubators which will be supported in the future. Although originally promoted by the makers of the Telegram messaging app, since 2020, TON has harnessed the TON Foundation to develop the project as a community-run and community-led open source initiative. The African nations of Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Republic of Congo have all expressed an interest in adopting the TON blockchain. Central Asian republics work towards crypto bank & crypto hub development

News emanating from the Central Asian republics of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan in recent days points to further rollout and development of cryptocurrency sector infrastructure. A press release published on March 26 outlined that Kyrgyzstan is working on various initiatives in order to copper-fasten its position as a regional crypto hub. Those efforts include the advancement of digital asset regulation, enabling the launch of licensed crypto platforms and ongoing trials of legal frameworks relative to crypto. Photo by Steve Johnson on UnsplashA7A5 stablecoinOne initiative that may aid in the development of the digital assets sector in Kyrgyzstan is the rollout of the A7A5 stablecoin. A7A5 is pegged to the Russian ruble, with the token having been issued by Kyrgyz company Old Vector. The product was first launched in February, with the intention for it to be used on the A7 cross-border payment platform of Russian state-owned bank Promsvyazbank. Garantex, a Russian crypto exchange which had been sanctioned by U.S. and European authorities and was recently shut down, announced on Feb. 19 the listing of the A7A5 stablecoin. The stablecoin’s backers claim that it was issued “in complete accordance with the new national legislation - under the control of regulatory authorities and directed to an officially registered, regulated broker.” The stablecoin is being promoted on the basis of an annual yield of up to 20%, which has been established due to its link to the refinancing rate of the central bank of the Russian Federation. Kazakhstan crypto bank proposalMeanwhile, lawmakers in Central Asian neighbor Kazakhstan have proposed the creation of a national crypto bank. According to The Times of Central Asia, an English-language daily newspaper, Azat Peruashev, leader of the Ak Zhol political party within Kazakhstan’s lower house of parliament, put forward the proposal, which would implicate the involvement of the National Bank of Kazakhstan and a number of the country’s commercial banks. Peruashev addressed the proposal to Kazakhstani Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov. However, the Central Asian country may have some fundamental issues to address before a crypto bank can become a reality. Currently, Kazakhstan has yet to establish a legal framework for the use of digital assets.  Last year, the authorities shut down 36 cryptocurrency exchanges which were deemed to have been operating illegally. In total, 3,500 illegal crypto exchanges have been shut down in Kazakhstan. Leading American crypto exchange business Coinbase faced a setback in the Central Asian country in November 2023 when the government cut access to its website within the country. While these crypto businesses have struggled to operate in Kazakhstan, Binance Kazakhstan successfully obtained a trading license from the Astana Financial Services Authority (AFSA) in September of last year. Earlier this month, the company added options trading and futures copy trading to the platform. Blockchain industry pioneer Kyle Chasse took to X to report on this most recent development. He suggested that given that 90% of crypto activity in Kazakhstan is off the books, the authorities are interested in launching a crypto bank so as to bring it all under their control.
