Korea Exchange sets the stage for security token trading

Policy & Regulation·December 07, 2023, 9:30 AM

Starting next year, South Koreans may have the opportunity to trade security tokens, as the Korea Exchange (KRX), the sole securities exchange operator in the country, has officially begun preparations to establish a security token market. The Busan Digital Asset Exchange (BDX), slated for launch next year, is expected to play a pivotal role in spearheading the growth and development of this emerging security token market.

Seeking approval from financial regulators

As reported by local news outlet Busan Ilbo, KRX applied to the FSC last month for registration as an innovative financial service under the financial regulatory sandbox scheme. On Nov. 19, the FSC approved the creation of pilot markets for investment contract securities and non-cash trust beneficial certificates. KRX’s recent initiative is a follow-up to this development. The financial regulator is set to make a final decision after holding a main committee meeting to review KRX’s application.

Investment contract securities and non-cash trust beneficial certificates represent two distinct types of security tokens. Investment contract securities provide a means for fractional investments in real-world assets (RWAs). This can include a diverse range of assets such as artworks, music copyrights, beef and carbon credits, allowing investors to own a portion of these assets. On the other hand, non-cash trust beneficial certificates function as secondary investment instruments. These certificates enable individuals to invest in financial products that themselves have invested in security tokens, offering an indirect pathway to participate in the security token market.

Fractional investments on the horizon

Various industries are poised to benefit from the emerging digital market, especially platforms focused on fractional investment in artworks. Companies like Yeolmae Company, Art Together and Seoul Auction Blue are keen on this opportunity and have applied to the FSS for permission to register security tokens. Upon receiving regulatory approval, these platforms plan to accept subscription requests, enabling investors to participate in the art market in a more accessible way.

The development of security token markets is expected to positively impact BDX, which is currently seeking an operator. Initially, when BDX’s operation plan was unveiled in September, it excluded security tokens due to regulatory constraints. However, with KRX now involved, it’s more probable that the Busan exchange will feature security tokens as major trading assets. Experts believe the success of these token exchanges will largely depend on the quality and appeal of the underlying assets.

A local securities industry official emphasized the significant role of the security token market in enhancing the stature of Busan as a blockchain hub. The growth of this market is seen as pivotal in boosting the value and utility of BDX. The official noted that BDX’s appeal to investors would increase if it offered a diverse range of underlying assets or unique security tokens. This development could mark a significant turning point for Busan in the blockchain industry.

Audius Achieves Token Listing On India’s CoinSwitch

Audius Achieves Token Listing On India’s CoinSwitchAudius, a decentralized music streaming platform which is attempting to cut intermediaries out of the music business, took a major leap forward in the Asian market on Wednesday, scoring a listing of its native $AUDIO token on Indian crypto exchange, CoinSwitch.Photo by Studio Art Smile on PexelsIn announcing the token going live on the platform CoinSwitch encouraged platform users to “trade $AUDIO today and support independent artists worldwide.” Founded in the United States in 2018 by Stanford University graduates Forrest Browning and Roneil Rumberg, the project launched its $AUDIO token in 2020.The token commenced trading on top tier global crypto exchanges shortly afterwards. In terms of listings on Asian exchanges, $AUDIO can be traded on DigitFinex Global, Bitrue and BingX in Singapore, HitBTC and Hotbit in Hong Kong and Tokocrypto and INDODAX in Indonesia. While it is already listed on WazirX, India’s largest crypto exchange by trading volume, the project will welcome another Indian listing via CoinSwitch given a market that ranks sixth in the world in terms of crypto ownership, with a backdrop of a population of 1.4 billion.Web3 with a Web2 UXAudius has taken a different approach than most other crypto projects. From the outset, its founders have focused on giving the platform the look and feel of a Web2 streaming service. Audius decided to embed its non-custodial wallet Hedgehog into the user login process. The strategy has been to make the UX as customer friendly and intuitive as possible in order to aid user on-boarding. There have been trade-offs in taking this approach and with that, the project advises users to keep only a small amount of the $AUDIO token within the Hedgehog wallet. When Hedgehog was launched in 2019, a project blog post proclaimed that “decentralization doesn’t have to come at the expense of user experience.”TikTok integrationEarlier this year, the Web3 streaming service integrated TikTok, allowing platform users to create accounts simply by linking their TikTok profiles. Additionally, the integration meant that users could share their Audius songs in the TikTok videos they produced. In late January, the $AUDIO token jumped 70% in a matter of hours once it became known that Coinbase planned to list the token on January 26. While a CoinSwitch listing is a significant milestone for the project in the Indian market, naturally it doesn’t compare with the volume that a global exchange listing on Coinbase can bring. At the time of publication, the $AUDIO token was trading at $0.29.For its part, CoinSwitch has experienced many of the ups and downs that this nascent industry could possibly deliver. In August 2022, five properties associated with the crypto exchange were searched by India’s Enforcement Directorate on the grounds of suspected contravention of India’s Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).Founded in 2017 by Ashish Singhal, Govind Soni and Vimal Sagar Tiwari, the firm has attracted investment and backing from Andreessen Horowitz, Coinbase Ventures, Tiger Global Management and Paradigm.

e-CNY Payments Enabled for Hong Kong Visitors From Mainland China

e-CNY Payments Enabled for Hong Kong Visitors From Mainland ChinaBank of China’s Hong Kong arm recently launched a digital yuan shopping festival, aiming to spur local consumption and promote the adoption of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). The festival, which commenced on July 18, allows visitors from mainland China to make purchases in Hong Kong using the digital yuan.Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (BOCHK), a subsidiary of China’s central bank, initiated trials of e-CNY cross-border payments in Hong Kong last year, paving the way for the current shopping festival.Photo by Eric Prouzet on UnsplashSubsidized useAccording to a press release published by BOCHK earlier this week, as of July 18, digital yuan wallet holders have been able to use China’s CBDC to make payments at over 200 participating merchants across Hong Kong. Furthermore, consumers have the opportunity to receive shopping subsidies in digital yuan by scanning QR codes at specific stores, as stated in the BOCHK press release. The range of merchants accepting e-CNY payments spans from electronics sellers and pharmacies to supermarkets. Among the participants is U Select, a Hong Kong-based supermarket chain with a wide presence of more than 90 stores throughout the city.BOCHK strategically chose the summer tourist season for the expansion of e-CNY payments in Hong Kong. Chen Guang, representing BOCHK, mentioned the influx of tourists to the special administrative region, presenting a prime opportunity to attract more users and bolster local consumption through this cross-border shopping festival. The move makes BOCHK the first institution to partake in the cross-border e-CNY trial in Hong Kong. In December 2022, the bank initiated the first phase of its “digital yuan exclusive experience,” which allowed a limited number of BOCHK consumers to shop in the city using the digital yuan.Adoption strategyThe digital yuan has witnessed robust adoption in recent times, with China leading the global development of CBDCs. The Bank of China has been actively striving to advance and popularize the use of digital yuan in the country. Various initiatives, including business loans, trial expansions, and partnerships with prominent technology firms, have been undertaken to propel the widespread adoption of the digital currency. The introduction of the digital yuan shopping festival in Hong Kong signifies yet another significant step in China’s efforts to promote its CBDC and drive its usage in both domestic and international transactions. With over 200 merchants already participating and a seamless payment experience for tourists, the festival has the potential to encourage further adoption and shape the future of digital payments in the region. As this initiative gains momentum, it will be crucial to observe its impact on local consumption and the broader implications for CBDC adoption in the global financial landscape. The rate of China’s CBDC development and beyond that, the intent with which it is striving to drive adoption through a seemingly never-ending series of initiatives has been unmatched by any other nation. With that, the first real results of the active and widespread use of a CBDC are going to come from the country that makes up one-fifth of the world economy.
