Binance’s U.S. legal woes may have repercussions for its expansion in Thailand

Policy & Regulation·December 02, 2023, 1:31 AM

While Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, is gearing up for a new trading venture in Thailand, the recent guilty plea by the firm in the United States and the hefty $4.3 billion penalties for anti-money laundering and sanctions violations have raised concerns about the feasibility of its Thai market venture.

That’s a consideration that has been raised by a recent report by Bloomberg. Earlier this month, it emerged that Binance had entered the beta testing phase of its Binance.th platform in Thailand. The venture is a collaboration with the local company, Gulf Energy Development Pcl, led by billionaire Sarath Ratanavadi.

Casting a shadow over expansion plans

Following Founder Changpeng Zhao’s (CZ) departure from the CEO role in the wake of the US criminal probe resolution, Singaporean Richard Teng, a regulator-turned-crypto executive, has taken the helm at Binance. In its report, Bloomberg suggests that these recent issues in the U.S. have “cast a shadow over the planned domestic digital-asset platform” in Thailand.

The new Binance CEO has emphasized Binance’s commitment to compliance overhaul and increased corporate transparency. In an interview Ratanavadi expressed confidence in Binance, noting that the company was not accused of crimes such as fraud or misuse of customer funds in the U.S. settlement. He stated:

“Binance grew extremely fast and so probably crossed paths with some regulations.”

Despite the regulatory storm, Ratanavadi chose Binance due to its market-leading position. The stringent scrutiny by Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission and the approval process, including inquiries about Binance, reflect the regulator’s cautious approach. The Gulf Binance Co. platform is set to launch fully in January, with Gulf Energy holding a 51% stake and Binance the remaining share.

Challenges in other Asian markets

The company may also face additional challenges in other Asian markets as a consequence of its regulatory troubles in the United States. While it remains to be seen if this was an unrelated development, it emerged earlier this week that regulators in the Philippines were moving to block access to the Binance platform and curtail the exchange’s ability to target Filipinos through advertising.

In South Korea, Binance’s activities in the country have come under renewed scrutiny within the crypto community in the wake of the regulatory penalties Binance has experienced in the U.S. Binance is active in that market through its acquisition of fiat-to-crypto exchange GOPAX. While GOPAX management are unfazed by these events, others have suggested that there may be consequences in terms of the ability of GOPAX to achieve full regulatory approval.

Demand reduction

Another challenge for the Thai venture includes a reduction in demand for crypto trading services in the Southeast Asian country. Official data reveals a significant drop in monthly trading volume at licensed digital-asset operators in Thailand, falling from over 250 billion baht in November 2021 to 17 billion baht ($490 million) in September 2023. The number of active trading accounts has plummeted by 87% from the peak in 2021.

Ratanavadi, whose net worth is estimated at $11 billion, believes that tighter regulatory oversight will restore investor confidence. Gulf Binance’s technology partner, Advanced Info Service Pcl, with its retail outlets, is expected to contribute to the joint venture’s marketing efforts.

Phemex introduces Lending Protocol and Pulse Season 3

Stella Chan, the chief operating officer of Phemex, a crypto derivatives exchange with a presence in Turkey and Singapore, recently provided details of the company’s unveiling of its Lending Protocol and SocialFi initiative Pulse Season 3. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Chan outlined that since the founding of the firm in 2019, the company has been evolving and working towards carving out a niche for itself in the industry. The executive confirmed that the exchange business has reached a point where daily trading volume now exceeds $2 billion across more than 300 trading pairs. Pulse Season 3Chan is also the co-founder of Phemex’s Pulse, a social trading platform that rewards users while attempting to foster a community spirit within the crypto sphere. As part of Phemex events held at Token 2024 in Dubai last week, the company announced Pulse Season 3, a SocialFi mechanism to incentivize community engagement. The initiative introduces casting and tipping features. Casting is a means through which community members can post up content. Meanwhile, tipping serves as a method through which other community members can acknowledge and reward high-quality community member contributions. Through this initiative Phemex is hoping to deliver an enhanced experience where trading seamlessly intersects with trending topics and insightful content.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashPhemex Lending ProtocolAlongside Pulse Season 3, the company has also launched the Phemex Lending Protocol, a feature allowing users to borrow crypto at competitive rates while earning interest. As part of that offering, all loans are safeguarded through the collateralization of the user’s digital assets. With an initial liquidity allocation of $22 million, this protocol has been established with an eye towards empowering traders to amplify their capital without selling their assets, while aligning in a more general sense with the user’s overall trading needs. Phemex is attempting to spearhead the transition towards greater user autonomy without compromising security. The Phemex Lending Protocol is central to that effort, offering users competitive borrowing rates and opportunities for passive income generation.  Standing testament to that, the platform offers interest rates on USDT starting at 3.57%. For those that hold vePT, the wrapped version of the platform's native Phemex token (PT), an additional 30% discount on borrowing rates is being offered. vePT is destined to act as a token which confers voting authority in the not too distant future, relative to Phemex’s governing decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). The platform is further enabling capital efficiency from the service user’s perspective by applying very little restriction so that funds can be withdrawn and redeployed at will, with minimum delay. Coming off the back of these announcements during Token 2024, the company appears to be following through on that momentum. Taking to the X social media platform on April 25, Chan outlined details of a plethora of user experience (UX) upgrades relative to its Pulse offering. Future plansLooking ahead, Phemex envisages the offering of a broader range of products tailored to user needs. Plans for an automated market maker (AMM) protocol aim to provide users with passive earning opportunities by contributing to liquidity. Additionally, Phemex is exploring the development of an on-chain credit scoring mechanism, leveraging its soulbound digital identity token to enhance access to decentralized finance (DeFi).

NEOPIN to launch bridge platform for Finschia, Ethereum and Klaytn networks

Centralized decentralized finance (CeDeFi) protocol NEOPIN is gearing up to launch NEOPIN Bridge, a platform designed to bridge the Finschia network with Ethereum Virtual Machine-based (EVM) networks like Ethereum and Klaytn. According to an official announcement via Medium on Tuesday (KST), the service will be launched by the end of February.Photo by Shubham's Web3 on UnsplashLinking ecosystemsEver since its establishment of an official partnership with the Finschia Foundation last month, NEOPIN has been developing Finschia’s first EVM-compatible bridge. The project is intended to facilitate the process of exchanging cryptocurrencies for users on the Finschia, Ethereum and Klaytn networks. This will enhance the development and liquidity of the Finschia and Klaytn ecosystems through the integration of Ethereum-based stablecoins.  Currently, NEOPIN’s DeFi protocols are accessible only through the NEOPIN Wallet. But with NEOPIN Bridge, user accessibility and convenience will be enhanced through provided support for various wallets like MetaMask, Kaikas, DOSI Vault and more. New services will also be implemented, including token swaps for users to transfer the converted Finschia tokens (FNSA) through the bridge. NEOPIN is the only DeFi protocol that simultaneously supports both the Finschia and Klaytn mainnets, who recently announced a joint proposal for the Dragon DeFi Initiative – a project to build a DeFi ecosystem active on both the Finschia and Klaytn mainnets. NEOPIN’s strengthsWith a record of zero incidents including stake slashing since 2018, along with a 99.99999% block generation rate, the protocol touts a clean track record in node validation across multiple blockchains, emphasizing its dedication to trust and stability. “NEOPIN is recognized for its robust security and reliability, serving as a role model for the Abu Dhabi DeFi regulatory framework. The launch of our self-developed NEOPIN Bridge is a significant stride towards encouraging the growth of the Finschia and Klaytn ecosystems,” said Ethan Kim, CEO of NEOPIN.
