Japan’s Mt.Gox to commence creditor repayments shortly

Web3 & Enterprise·November 24, 2023, 1:05 AM

Creditors of Mt. Gox, the Japanese Bitcoin exchange that suffered a devastating hack in 2014, have received a glimmer of hope with an announcement from the administrators of the Mt.Gox estate that repayments are imminent.

The recent announcement from Nobuaki Kobayashi, the trustee overseeing Mt. Gox’s estate was made on Tuesday when Kobayashi initiated the distribution of emails to rehabilitation creditors, hinting at the commencement of repayments. Social media reports have fueled optimism, suggesting that creditors may start receiving repayments in cash in 2023.

First round repayments in 2023

The email, sent in both Japanese and English, outlined Kobayashi’s plan to initiate the first round of repayments in 2023, with the process extending into 2024. The email highlighted the complexity of the task, citing the large number of rehabilitation creditors, diverse types of repayments and varied processing times required. Despite the lack of specific timelines for individual creditors, the email conveyed a cautiously optimistic tone about progress.

Cash vs. bitcoin

Reaction within the Mt. Gox community has been mixed. Some commentators view Kobayashi’s email as “cautiously promising,” interpreting it as a positive sign that repayments are finally on the horizon. Long-suffering creditors had been informed of a one-year extension to the repayment deadline in September. Additionally, some observers have raised concerns, noting that the email specifically references cash payments, whereas many victims of the Mt. Gox hack anticipate the return of large amounts of bitcoin.

The Mt. Gox trustee currently holds 135,890 BTC across known addresses, valued at nearly $5 billion. An additional 3,795 BTC (worth $130 million) are held on unknown addresses.

While the email signals progress, questions remain about the nature and extent of the repayments, with the community keenly observing developments. The email stated:

“The specific timing of repayment to individual rehabilitation creditors is undetermined, and therefore, it will not be possible to provide advance notice to each rehabilitation creditor regarding the specific timing of their repayment.”

Deadlines were also pushed back on other occasions, including March of this year when creditors were sent a “change of deadline“ notification.

Redemption of trust assets

This news coincided with the Mt. Gox trustee’s announcement on Wednesday regarding the redemption of trust assets. A substantial sum of 7 billion Japanese yen (equivalent to $47 million) was redeemed, intended for funding the repayment of claims. Following the redemption, the remaining trust assets stood at 8.8 billion yen, or approximately $59 million. The trustee, as per the official statement, is actively preparing for the base repayment, early lump-sum repayment and intermediate repayment.

The recent events surrounding Mt. Gox have sparked discussions within the broader crypto community about the potential for a bitcoin sell-off. It’s long been speculated that the sudden release of bitcoin to creditors could lead to the market being flooded with sellers. However, as it appears that cash is being distributed as well as bitcoin, this should soften any potential bitcoin sell-off.

Despite the optimism in some quarters, skepticism lingers due to the history of delays in Mt. Gox repayments. Creditors remain cautiously hopeful for the most part, awaiting further updates and tangible progress in the rehabilitation process.

Intella X Explores Ways to Integrate YGG’s Soulbound Reputation Tokens into Its Wallet

Intella X Explores Ways to Integrate YGG’s Soulbound Reputation Tokens into Its WalletIntella X, a South Korean Web3 gaming platform, has announced its partnership with Yield Guild Games (YGG), a leading DeFi-powered gaming guild.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashBoosting Intella X’s global presenceThis collaborative effort is expected to boost Intella X’s presence in the global Web3 sector. YGG, boasting a membership base of over 450,000 worldwide and collaborating with more than 80 gaming companies, recently launched Superquest, a new way to earn in-game rewards. Superquest awards soulbound reputation tokens to gamers based on their level of community engagement and contributions. The two organizations will explore ways to integrate YGG soulbound reputation tokens into Intella X Wallet (IX Wallet), a Web3 wallet designated for the Intella X platform. In an attempt to expand its ecosystem, Intella X has soft-launched the Android and web versions of IX Wallet. Furthermore, the Korean Web3 platform in February joined forces with IndiGG, a sub-decentralized autonomous organization of YGG in India.Neowiz’s Q2 financialsIn the midst of these developments, Neowiz, the parent company of Intella X, last week disclosed its financial performance for the second quarter. The company garnered revenues amounting to KRW 70.1 billion ($52.7 million), signifying a year-on-year decrease of 0.2%. Neowiz incurred an operating loss of KRW 4.9 billion during the same period, venturing into negative territory in Q2. This setback can be attributed to escalated marketing expenditures associated with the launch of the mobile role-playing game “Brown Dust 2” and the third-year anniversary celebration of the MMORPG title “Kingdom.” The latter is the brainchild of game developer FOW Games, a company Neowiz acquired in May.Meanwhile, Neowiz’s Q2 net income recorded an 8% year-over-year increase, totaling KRW 22.4 billion. This one-time gain is due to the sale of certain shares the company owned in another entity as part of the wider FOW Games acquisition strategy.Path to recoveryIn the latter half of this year, Neowiz is gearing up for recovery, channeling its focus into in-house developed titles. A key highlight among these is the imminent launch of “Lies of P” on September 19. As the launch date of this soulslike video game, inspired by the narrative of Pinocchio, draws near, the company is poised to offer game packages for pre-sale commencing September 17. These packages will be accessible both online and in-person through the e-commerce platform SSG.com and the warehouse chain E-Mart Traders. An extensive global marketing campaign is also in the works, with Neowiz set to participate in Germany’s Gamescom 2023 later this month.

StanChart CEO predicts blockchain will replace cash in everyday finance

Bill Winters, the American banker who heads the British financial group Standard Chartered, appeared at the Hong Kong FinTech Week conference earlier this week, where he predicted a future in which cash will give way to blockchain-based systems for everyday transactions. According to Cointelegraph, Winters’ view aligns with that of Hong Kong regulators. At the same time, he stressed the importance of continued experimentation, noting that it remains uncertain how this transformation will ultimately take shape. Winters also commended Hong Kong’s leadership in exploring the potential of digital finance. Tech-driven finance has certainly been one of the key initiatives Hong Kong has been exploring. Recently, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) released its e-HKD Pilot Programme Phase 2 Report, which showed public support for tokenized deposits.Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashReal-world assets gain ground on the blockchainOn-chain data also underscores the rapid growth of the tokenization sector. According to RWA.xyz, the total value of real-world assets (RWAs) deployed on-chain has climbed to $35.63 billion, up 7.8% from a month ago. A study by Ripple and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) estimates that tokenized assets could be worth $19 trillion by 2033, about 530 times their current value. Among RWA assets, the BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity (BUIDL) Fund, Tether Gold (XAUT), and Paxos Gold (PAXG) currently lead the market in terms of value. Over the past 30 days, BlackRock’s BUIDL Fund slipped 0.06%, while the two tokenized gold products, XAUT and PAXG, jumped 46.65% and 14.19%, respectively. These gains mirror gold’s bullish run in October, when its price surpassed $4,000 per ounce for the first time on Oct. 7. The momentum has since eased slightly, with gold now trading at around $3,969.55 per ounce. Tokenization brings 24/7 markets and P2P flexibilityIndustry experts point to the convenience of tokenization as a key advantage. Speaking to Yahoo Finance, Will Peck, head of digital assets at WisdomTree, explained that tokenized gold allows for around-the-clock trading and direct peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions. He added that gold and Bitcoin act as complementary stores of value, both serving as deflationary assets. Ian Kane, CEO of fintech company Firepan, said tokenized gold appeals to investors as it enables them to retain ownership, leverage their holdings for loans, and generate extra yield, while preserving their principal against debasement or devaluation. These views are not new. Earlier this month, Robinhood Markets CEO Vlad Tenev described tokenization as “a freight train” that “can’t be stopped,” predicting it will eventually transform the global financial system. Similarly, in his annual letter to investors in April, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink said the tokenization of assets could fundamentally reshape the way people invest. By digitizing ownership, tokenized venture capital funds could move beyond their closed circles, giving ordinary investors a stake in early-stage innovation and greater control over their capital. Venture capital faces hurdles in tokenization pushWhile tokenization promises greater accessibility and liquidity, not all market segments are ready for it. According to TheStreet, tokenized venture capital (VC) funds could open a traditionally closed market to more investors, but the process is more complex than it appears. In an interview with TheStreet, Elena Obukhova, founder of Supermoon Ventures, said that liquidity, not technology, is the main obstacle. Unlike tokenized company shares that can be traded freely on public markets, VC funds invest in private startups whose value may take years to materialize through an exit or acquisition. Allowing such funds to trade freely could increase volatility and pressure founders, as interim valuations might distort perceptions and weaken confidence in early-stage ventures. Still, the promise of tokenized venture finance remains within reach. Firms are testing models that limit trading periods, protect investor data, and refine valuation methods to better reflect the illiquid nature of startup investments. Since liquidity events such as initial public offering (IPOs) or acquisitions typically occur only every one to two years for early-stage startups, the path forward will depend on creating systems that can maintain stable and accurate valuations in the interim. Tokenization is rapidly emerging as a transformative force in the financial world, offering greater accessibility, liquidity, and efficiency. As more assets, from gold to venture capital, make their way onto the blockchain, the potential to reshape investment and trading markets grows. While challenges remain, particularly around liquidity and valuation in sectors like venture capital, the continued advancements in tokenization demonstrate its key role in the future of finance.
