Series A funding round

The term "unicorn" denotes privately held companies valued at $1 billion or more, reflecting the remarkable achievement for HashKey in the rapidly evolving crypto landscape.

With a valuation now surpassing $1.2 billion, HashKey positions itself as a major player in the crypto space within East and Southeast Asia. It’s leveraging its activities that span trading platforms, venture funding, wealth management and asset management in key locations like Hong Kong and Singapore. Its Singapore arm was awarded a capital markets license by the local regulator in December.

Undisclosed investors

The fundraising initiative was first reported in May of last year and later announced by HashKey in August. It attracted contributions from both existing and new investors. While the company refrained from divulging specific investor names, it referred to them as "prominent institutional investors" and "leading Web3 institutions," signaling a mix of established entities and those already at the forefront of Web3 innovation.

It was previously disclosed that the company has been backed by the support of OKX Ventures, the investment arm of the well-known OKX digital asset exchange. The funds secured will serve a dual purpose – fostering the development of a robust Web3 ecosystem and supporting licensed products in Hong Kong.

HashKey's diverse business arms, including asset management, a blockchain node validation service, a tokenization service, and a Web3 incubation arm, are set to benefit from the fresh capital infusion. The allocation of funds towards these ventures aligns with HashKey's strategic vision to contribute significantly to the evolving crypto ecosystem.

Hong Kong hub

Hong Kong, eager to establish itself as a digital asset hub, has been the backdrop for HashKey's growth. The city's dedicated virtual-asset regulatory framework, introduced in June, aims to attract companies while prioritizing investor protection. Under this framework, retail investors can trade major tokens such as Bitcoin and Ether on licensed exchanges, with HashKey Exchange and BC Technology Group Ltd.’s OSL currently leading the way.

Despite the optimism surrounding Hong Kong's potential as a crypto hub, uncertainties linger. The city's ability to support multiple crypto exchanges and the long-term commitment of officials to the sector remain open questions, given its susceptibility to occasional scandals.

Since commencing its retail trading service in late August, HashKey Exchange has garnered over 155,000 registered users. The platform's 24-hour spot trading volume is estimated at approximately $11 million, according to CoinMarketCap data as of this writing. While this figure may pale in comparison to Binance, the world's largest crypto platform, HashKey's focus on building a resilient and user-friendly ecosystem positions it as a strong contender in the crypto industry's ongoing evolution.

The successful funding round and unicorn status attained by HashKey underscore the renewed optimism in the crypto venture capital landscape. Following a market slump in 2022 and various challenges faced by crypto startups, the recent resurgence in token prices has reignited hopes for a more favorable venture capital outlook.

This advancement is poised to heighten the security and efficiency of online transactions, elevating India’s digital landscape. The launch event for the challenge took place at the India Habitat Centre and showcased a collaborative endeavor involving MeitY, Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).Harnessing blockchain technologyAt its core, this initiative aims to bridge the traditional internet framework with the burgeoning potential of blockchain technology. A press release published by MeitY on Wednesday clarified that the web browser will boast an embedded CCA India root certificate, bolstering the browser’s security framework and upholding the sanctity of data privacy.Sunita Verma, Research & Development Group Coordinator at MeitY, underscored the profound significance of this initiative in India’s digital narrative. She conveyed the message from Alkesh Kumar Sharma, MeitY’s Secretary, emphasizing that this challenge embodies a pivotal stride toward realizing the vision of an “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” or self-reliant India.Further echoing this sentiment, Verma stated:“Digital India has orchestrated a transformative shift in our nation’s operational fabric. Korea's Busan city utilizes blockchain to advance shipping and coffee industries

The Busan Port Authority (BPA) recently announced its plan to deploy a blockchain-based transshipment monitoring system known as Port-i at the port of Busan, located in the southern part of South Korea, according to local news outlet Financial News. The Port-i system is designed to streamline the management of transshipment cargo for shipping companies at Busan Port, which handles about 12.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually. The system is set for a pilot phase in January 2025, with plans to expand it to all shipping companies using the port by the second half of 2025.Photo by Christopher Lee on UnsplashEnhancing efficiency and profitability in shippingWith Port-i, shipping companies will be able to track ships and cargo through the Chain Portal, Busan Port’s integrated logistics platform. Port-i will provide a unified view of berth schedules across all terminals at the port, addressing the current issue where companies have to separately check ship and cargo statuses and independently identify berth schedules at different terminals. The BPA expects that the Port-i service will allow shipping companies to manage transshipment cargo more efficiently, improve ship loading rates and potentially increase profits. Blockchain for coffee quality controlIn addition to the Port-i initiative, Busan is also exploring other uses of blockchain technology for industrial development. The city recently set up the Busan Coffee R&D Lab, backed by the Ministry of Science and ICT, as reported by Metro.  This facility aims to use blockchain to create a platform that enhances the logistics of coffee sourcing and production, including a system that assigns unique identification to coffee products. It will provide reliable data required to control taste and quality. By integrating blockchain with artificial intelligence and advanced logistics techniques, Busan is positioning itself at the forefront of the coffee industry with innovative business models.

$9M funding round to enhance liquidity at Woo X

WOO X, a Taipei-based cryptocurrency exchange, has successfully raised $9 million in its latest funding round, with notable investors including crypto market maker Wintermute. Jack Tan, co-founder of WOO, emphasized the significance of this funding in aligning the interests of liquidity providers rather than as a capital-raising exercise. On social media the company wrote that it “welcomes an elite group of liquidity providers to our ecosystem - as our commitment to building the best environment for traders remains steadfast.”Photo by micheile henderson on UnsplashDesignated market makersThe funding comes from designated market makers (DMMs), featuring participants like Selini Capital, Time Research, Pulsar, Efficient Frontier, Singapore’s Amber Group, AlphaLab Capital, Presto Labs and Riverside Hedge. This infusion of capital is expected to enhance liquidity on WOO X, starting with the BTC and ETH perpetual futures markets and later expanding into altcoin perpetual futures and all spot markets. WOO X plans to roll out a designated market maker (DMM) program for its spot markets in the first quarter of the current year. These strategic moves are expected to contribute to achieving a 100% custody ratio by the second quarter of 2024. Business model pivotWOO X underwent a strategic shift in its business model during the third quarter of the previous year. It transitioned to partner with multiple liquidity providers for both spot and perpetual futures markets, moving away from reliance on a single provider, Kronos Research. The decision to diversify followed a security incident in November 2023, where Kronos suffered a hack leading to an estimated loss of $25 million. As a response, WOO X took proactive measures to restructure its operations. As part of that plan to address liquidity, last month WOO X established a significant partnership with Wintermute, the leading algorithmic trading company and liquidity provider with a trading volume of approximately $3.6 trillion. This partnership positions Wintermute as the primary liquidity provider for WOO X, further strengthening the exchange's market presence. News of this development in December led to a marked increase in the unit price of the platform’s WOO token. Over the course of the last two weeks of December, the WOO token price increased from $0.2385 to $0.4718, representing a 98% increase. Contributing to its recent surge is the partnership announcement with Arbitrum by WooFi exchange, a development that attracted attention from potential investors. The exchange implemented various initiatives to fortify its position, including updates to its fee structure, technology infrastructure enhancements to accommodate multiple designated market makers simultaneously, the introduction of a maker rebate in USDT and the launch of the DMM rewards pool to further incentivize liquidity provision on WOO X. Global expansionThe newly secured funds are earmarked for global market expansion and obtaining regulatory licenses, aligning with WOO's vision for sustainable growth. In 2021, Woo Network successfully closed a $30 million Series A funding round. Subsequently, in October of the previous year, the company repurchased its shares and tokens from the bankruptcy estate of Three Arrows Capital, a participant in the Series A round.
