Series A funding round

The term "unicorn" denotes privately held companies valued at $1 billion or more, reflecting the remarkable achievement for HashKey in the rapidly evolving crypto landscape.

With a valuation now surpassing $1.2 billion, HashKey positions itself as a major player in the crypto space within East and Southeast Asia. It’s leveraging its activities that span trading platforms, venture funding, wealth management and asset management in key locations like Hong Kong and Singapore. Its Singapore arm was awarded a capital markets license by the local regulator in December.

Undisclosed investors

The fundraising initiative was first reported in May of last year and later announced by HashKey in August. It attracted contributions from both existing and new investors. While the company refrained from divulging specific investor names, it referred to them as "prominent institutional investors" and "leading Web3 institutions," signaling a mix of established entities and those already at the forefront of Web3 innovation.

It was previously disclosed that the company has been backed by the support of OKX Ventures, the investment arm of the well-known OKX digital asset exchange. The funds secured will serve a dual purpose – fostering the development of a robust Web3 ecosystem and supporting licensed products in Hong Kong.

HashKey's diverse business arms, including asset management, a blockchain node validation service, a tokenization service, and a Web3 incubation arm, are set to benefit from the fresh capital infusion. The allocation of funds towards these ventures aligns with HashKey's strategic vision to contribute significantly to the evolving crypto ecosystem.

Hong Kong hub

Hong Kong, eager to establish itself as a digital asset hub, has been the backdrop for HashKey's growth. The city's dedicated virtual-asset regulatory framework, introduced in June, aims to attract companies while prioritizing investor protection. Under this framework, retail investors can trade major tokens such as Bitcoin and Ether on licensed exchanges, with HashKey Exchange and BC Technology Group Ltd.’s OSL currently leading the way.

Despite the optimism surrounding Hong Kong's potential as a crypto hub, uncertainties linger. The city's ability to support multiple crypto exchanges and the long-term commitment of officials to the sector remain open questions, given its susceptibility to occasional scandals.

Since commencing its retail trading service in late August, HashKey Exchange has garnered over 155,000 registered users. The platform's 24-hour spot trading volume is estimated at approximately $11 million, according to CoinMarketCap data as of this writing. While this figure may pale in comparison to Binance, the world's largest crypto platform, HashKey's focus on building a resilient and user-friendly ecosystem positions it as a strong contender in the crypto industry's ongoing evolution.

The successful funding round and unicorn status attained by HashKey underscore the renewed optimism in the crypto venture capital landscape. Following a market slump in 2022 and various challenges faced by crypto startups, the recent resurgence in token prices has reignited hopes for a more favorable venture capital outlook.

BitMEX Co-Founder Forecasts $750K to $1 Million Bitcoin Price by 2026

BitMEX Co-Founder Forecasts $750K to $1 Million Bitcoin Price by 2026In a recent interview with YouTuber Tom Bilyeu, Arthur Hayes, Co-Founder of the Seychelles-registered cryptocurrency exchange and derivative trading platform BitMEX, has expressed his bullish outlook on Bitcoin’s future price, projecting a valuation of $750,000 to $1 million for the leading cryptocurrency by the year 2026.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashFinite supply to drive price dynamicHayes’ optimism is rooted in several factors that he believes will shape the next Bitcoin cycle. One of the key factors driving Hayes’ projection is Bitcoin’s limited supply. With a maximum cap of 21 million coins, Bitcoin’s scarcity is expected to propel the unit price of the asset in tandem with growing demand as more investors seek to secure a piece of this finite resource. The idea that Bitcoin’s scarcity will drive its value higher has been a fundamental tenet of the cryptocurrency since its inception. In 2010 the leading cryptocurrency’s pseudonymous Founder stated: “When someone tries to buy all the world’s supply of a scarce asset, the more they buy the higher the price goes.”ETF potentialHayes also highlighted the potential for Bitcoin spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to become available in major regulated markets. The introduction of Bitcoin ETFs could attract institutional investors and provide a more accessible way for the broader public to invest in Bitcoin, further boosting its demand. However, Hayes also speculates about the risks associated with a Bitcoin ETF. He stated: “Are we inviting in something that’s going to fundamentally change what Bitcoin is?”Geopolitical factorsGeopolitical uncertainty plays a significant role in Hayes’ forecast also. As global economic and political instability persists, investors may turn to Bitcoin and other alternative assets as hedges against traditional financial instruments. However, it’s important to note that Hayes contextualized his Bitcoin price prediction within a larger bullish macroeconomic environment. From his perspective the surge in asset prices will not be limited to cryptocurrencies alone. He anticipates a substantial boom in financial markets, with not only Bitcoin but also traditional assets like stocks experiencing substantial price growth.Hayes stated: “I think it will be the biggest boom in financial markets we have ever seen in human history. Bitcoin will have a ridiculous price, Nasdaq will have a ridiculous price, S&P will have a ridiculous price.”Known for his thoughtful and insightful writings on the subject area, Hayes wrote in July that he believes that Bitcoin will be the currency of choice when it comes to the growing need for artificial intelligence (AI) to work directly with a means of payment.$1 million BTC by 2026While Hayes’ projection of a $1 million Bitcoin price by 2026 may seem ambitious, his short-term predictions are more moderate. He foresees Bitcoin trading in the $30,000 range for the current year. Building upon that thesis, he maintains that the possibility exists of it reaching $70,000 by 2024.This aligns with the views of other industry analysts who anticipate challenges and headwinds in the near term. There’s little doubt that recent platform failures and speculation with regard to the health of other leading crypto platforms have been retarding market performance more recently. While the road ahead may hold fluctuations and challenges, many experts believe that Bitcoin’s long-term trajectory remains promising, driven by its unique attributes and the changing dynamics of global finance.

ClayStack expands into Ethereum restaking ahead of token launch

ClayStack, the crypto liquid staking platform, has made a strategic move into the Ethereum restaking arena through EigenLayer, providing users with reward points in anticipation of its upcoming token launch.Photo by Kanchanara on Unsplash‘Redefining the staking landscape’The Singaporean platform describes its mission as redefining “the staking landscape by helping users unlock the underlying value of their crypto assets, and we are doing this by building a decentralized cross-chain liquid staking protocol.” In its efforts to deliver on that mission, it appears that the crypto startup is set to convert its Ethereum liquid staking token, csETH, into a liquid restaking token, leveraging the Ethereum restaking protocol offered by EigenLayer. Eigenlayer enables restaked sidechains, through which ETH restakers can participate in Ethereum-centric consensus protocols. Reward pointsIn an announcement on Tuesday, ClayStack revealed its plan to offer reward points to users participating in Ethereum restaking, with a 1:1 ratio for redemption when the platform's token is launched. Each clay point earned will be redeemable for one clay token during the token launch. Notably, the platform distinguishes itself by offering a 1:1 redemption system, setting it apart from other points programs. Founder and CEO Mohak Agarwal explained how the project is adopting EigenLayer's protocol for this new service. Agarwal had teased that the project had something new to offer in the pipeline when taking to social media last week, writing:”We are entering into a new era where staking will become more dynamic, accessible, and rewarding for the entire DeFi community.” Currently, ClayStack accepts native ETH for direct restaking on EigenLayer. Agarwal confirmed to The Block that other liquid staking tokens, such as Lido staked ether (stETH) and Rocket Pool ether (rETH), will be integrated into the platform in the coming days. He emphasized that these tokens will be directly deposited on EigenLayer, streamlining the restaking process. Growing interest in restakingEthereum restaking has gained significant traction since EigenLayer's launch in June of the previous year, with a total value locked (TVL) in smart contracts reaching approximately $1.7 billion. Renzo Protocol recently entered the Ethereum restaking space via EigenLayer, securing a $3.2 million seed funding round. Despite being in beta, Renzo has already achieved a TVL exceeding $116 million. ClayStack's TVL currently stands at around $2.25 million, having initially launched liquid staking for Polygon's MATIC token in 2022. Following that, the platform introduced Ethereum liquid staking in September. However, the latest move marks a shift in focus towards Ethereum restaking due to challenges faced on the Polygon network. Agarwal outlined the reward structure, stating that 20 clay points will be allocated per ETH per week, with rates subject to change every Monday but generally remaining constant throughout the week. There are no minimum or maximum points for individual users, although there is a weekly total cap for all users combined, which refreshes at the beginning of each week.
