$100M funding sees HashKey unlock unicorn status

Web3 & Enterprise·January 17, 2024, 2:00 AM

HashKey Group, the operator of one of Hong Kong's two licensed crypto exchanges, declared its newfound unicorn status on Tuesday, having successfully raised nearly $100 million in a recent funding round.

Series A funding round

The term "unicorn" denotes privately held companies valued at $1 billion or more, reflecting the remarkable achievement for HashKey in the rapidly evolving crypto landscape.

With a valuation now surpassing $1.2 billion, HashKey positions itself as a major player in the crypto space within East and Southeast Asia. It’s leveraging its activities that span trading platforms, venture funding, wealth management and asset management in key locations like Hong Kong and Singapore. Its Singapore arm was awarded a capital markets license by the local regulator in December.

Undisclosed investors

The fundraising initiative was first reported in May of last year and later announced by HashKey in August. It attracted contributions from both existing and new investors. While the company refrained from divulging specific investor names, it referred to them as "prominent institutional investors" and "leading Web3 institutions," signaling a mix of established entities and those already at the forefront of Web3 innovation.

It was previously disclosed that the company has been backed by the support of OKX Ventures, the investment arm of the well-known OKX digital asset exchange. The funds secured will serve a dual purpose – fostering the development of a robust Web3 ecosystem and supporting licensed products in Hong Kong.

HashKey's diverse business arms, including asset management, a blockchain node validation service, a tokenization service, and a Web3 incubation arm, are set to benefit from the fresh capital infusion. The allocation of funds towards these ventures aligns with HashKey's strategic vision to contribute significantly to the evolving crypto ecosystem.

Hong Kong hub

Hong Kong, eager to establish itself as a digital asset hub, has been the backdrop for HashKey's growth. The city's dedicated virtual-asset regulatory framework, introduced in June, aims to attract companies while prioritizing investor protection. Under this framework, retail investors can trade major tokens such as Bitcoin and Ether on licensed exchanges, with HashKey Exchange and BC Technology Group Ltd.’s OSL currently leading the way.

Despite the optimism surrounding Hong Kong's potential as a crypto hub, uncertainties linger. The city's ability to support multiple crypto exchanges and the long-term commitment of officials to the sector remain open questions, given its susceptibility to occasional scandals.

Since commencing its retail trading service in late August, HashKey Exchange has garnered over 155,000 registered users. The platform's 24-hour spot trading volume is estimated at approximately $11 million, according to CoinMarketCap data as of this writing. While this figure may pale in comparison to Binance, the world's largest crypto platform, HashKey's focus on building a resilient and user-friendly ecosystem positions it as a strong contender in the crypto industry's ongoing evolution.

The successful funding round and unicorn status attained by HashKey underscore the renewed optimism in the crypto venture capital landscape. Following a market slump in 2022 and various challenges faced by crypto startups, the recent resurgence in token prices has reignited hopes for a more favorable venture capital outlook.

Aave v3 Launches on Metis Scaling Network

Aave v3 Launches on Metis Scaling NetworkMetisDAO confirmed on Tuesday that leading decentralized liquidity protocol Aave has been deployed on the layer 2 Ethereum-centric scaling platform.Photo by Joshua Sortino on UnsplashGiven the distributed nature of the teams behind decentralized networks and projects, it can be difficult at times to determine where project teams are based, albeit in the case of MetisDAO, according to LinkedIn, its primary location is Singapore despite having a Canadian Co-Founder and CEO.Aave’s move to ZK networksThe move comes following a vote taken by Aave’s user community, who voted in favor last month of a proposal to deploy the liquidity protocol on zero knowledge-based networks. In a social media post, the Metis team referred to the decentralized lending market going live on the network as “a new era of Decentralized Finance.”The development is significant for Metis, given that Aave is the third largest project in crypto based on the total value locked (TVL) metric. Within DeFi lending, it’s the biggest project in the sector, holding a TVL of $5.4 billion. One of the keys of Aave’s dominance is its multi-chain strategy. Metis marks the eighth network upon which it has been deployed. The others include Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Fantom, Harmony and Avalanche.Metis technical roadmapWhile there’s a lot of uncertainty as to how various crypto projects will pan out over the longer run, most agree that Ethereum is here to stay. Metis stands a good chance of contributing to that ecosystem over the long term as layer two scaling networks are likely to be part and parcel of the Ethereum environment for some time to come.Last month, the project set out a technical roadmap, detailing what the project has in store, while claiming that in general, 2023 would be a great year for Ethereum. Metis is a layer two network based on Optimistic Rollup architecture. It has grown into the third largest scaling network relative to Ethereum. The project plans to roll out Bedrock, a technical upgrade that will enable improved network security. Furthermore, it plans on bringing about consensus and execution separation. Also in its sights are faster deposit times, which the project claims, will enable better UX.Many DeFi networks are under scrutiny in terms of the centralized elements that they incorporate. Metis plans to make improvements in this regard, with the intention of decentralizing the sequencer pool. The project claims that “Metis Andromeda will be decentralized to the core.”Hybrid rollupsDemonstrating further ambition, Metis is aspiring to bring about hybrid rollups, combining the features of optimistic rollup architecture with zero-knowledge proofs. In a tweet, Head of Marketing and MetisDAO Co-Founder Kevin Li said that “by combining the best traits from both schemes, hybrid rollups will offer the unmatched scalability and EVM-equivalence of optimistic rollups, together with the censorship resistance and fast finality enabled by zero-knowledge proofs. The best of both worlds.”MetisDAO believes it adds value for users of its network through Aave’s offering, enabling them to borrow assets with less collateral via Aave’s High-Efficiency mode. Furthermore, the deployment makes for improved risk management through supply and borrow caps, and siloed borrowing, reducing the risk in the event of market contagion.

HashPalette acquisition sees Aptos Labs enter Japanese market

Aptos Labs, the developers behind the Aptos layer-1 blockchain, has entered the Japanese market through the acquisition of HashPalette, a blockchain network concerned with the issuance, management and distribution of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). HashPalette informed stakeholders of the development on Oct. through an X post, alongside a press release published on its behalf by Japanese public relations company PR Times. Photo by Tianshu Liu on UnsplashExpanding Asian presenceUp until now, HashPalette has been a wholly owned subsidiary of HashPort, a blockchain-related consulting and infrastructure provider based in Tokyo. This acquisition sees the project transfer to being a wholly owned subsidiary of Aptos Labs. Accordingly, this will mean that applications developed by HashPalette will be migrated onto the Aptos Network. Similarly, the Palette Chain blockchain will migrate over to Aptos. From Aptos Labs’ perspective, the acquisition enables it to expand its blockchain ecosystem in Japan and within Asia more broadly. Aptos Labs Co-Founder Mo Shaikh described the acquisition as an investment in “the talented builders and creators of the region.”  Deal pending approvals, closing conditionsWhile the parties have announced the acquisition, the deal is still subject to required approvals being granted, together with various closing conditions related to the sale being met. Addressing the need to close out the deal, HashPalette tweeted:“HashPort and Aptos Labs will work closely together in the transition and will take great care to ensure that all stakeholders, including PLT and ELF holders, are not disadvantaged by the migration.” The PLT token is HashPalette’s native token. According to the project’s whitepaper, it has utility when it comes to the payment of NFT issuance fees and node management fees relative to the Palette Chain. Additionally, it can be used to pay for NFTs issued on the Palette Chain and for subscription payments related to applications developed on top of the network. The ELF token is a crypto asset utilized within THE LAND ELF Crossing, an NFT farming game which was developed by HashPalette and issued on the Palette Chain. The game is being marketed in Japan with the assistance of Animoca Brands following a partnership earlier this year. The companies have agreed to gradually migrate NFTs which had been issued on Palette Chain, relative to the EXPO2025 digital wallet developed by HashPort, to the Aptos Network. Once that migration has been achieved, it’s envisaged that the Aptos Network will become the only blockchain associated with the EXPO2025 digital wallet. Unresolved Palette Chain issuesFrom the point of view of the development team behind HashPalette, it was outlined in the press release that the move goes beyond a simple financial transaction. It acknowledged that “Palette Chain still has many issues.”  Against that background, the team believes that in order to further accelerate the social implementation of Web3, it has “considered how to make services built on Palette Chain more scalable and usable, and to enable smoother access to the global Web3 market.” That consideration has brought the project team to the conclusion that migrating to the Aptos Network offers the best path forward. At the time of writing, Aptos’ APT token was trading at $8.93, up 12.44% over the course of 24 hours, according to CoinMarketCap data.
