Klaytn Foundation and Finschia Foundation to jointly launch largest blockchain network in Asia

Web3 & Enterprise·January 17, 2024, 9:39 AM

The Klaytn Foundation and Finschia Foundation have jointly submitted a governance proposal to launch a new mainnet created by merging their respective blockchain ecosystems. The proposals have been submitted for open discussion, with voting scheduled for Jan. 26 to Feb. 2, according to an official announcement on Wednesday (KST).

The main objective of this initiative is to create Asia’s largest Web3 ecosystem by combining key features of both blockchains. To do so, the two foundations plan to share their technologies, services and business networks and fortify connections between their partners like their mother companies Kakao and LINE, who have contributed to their development and expansion.

“We are excited to be taking the first step toward unlocking the enormous synergy of merging the public blockchains started by Kakao and LINE, which are both leading IT companies in Asia,” the two foundations said. “We will give our best to make this merge an opportunity to innovate and lead the Asian blockchain industry in both technology and adoption.”

An unprecedented mainnet ecosystem

The merger will bring together Klaytn and Finschia’s networks in different Asian countries, like Klaytn’s leverage in South Korea, Singapore and Vietnam, and Finschia’s service network in Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and Abu Dhabi. Once the combined ecosystem is launched, it will offer over 420 decentralized apps (dApps) and services, 45 governance partners and some 450 Web3 resources, becoming a mammoth Web3 network capable of swaying the trajectory of the Asian market. In addition, the blockchain will be connected with both Kakao and LINE messengers – two well-known messenger apps in Asia – opening up access to a vast continental user base of over 250 million people.

The integration is also expected to catalyze the creation of new Web3 infrastructure in Asia, boosting scalability and liquidity.

Future business plans

The joint foundation is specifically set to undertake projects in areas like RWA tokenization, GameFi, DeFi verticals, messenger-based Web3 services and digital commerce through partnerships with Japanese, South Korean and Southeast Asian firms. By leveraging its access to Kakaotalk and LINE users, the new public blockchain has the potential to be a springboard for IT and entertainment enterprises in Asia.

Improved tokenomics

What may especially interest shareholders and users alike is a new native token that will be issued on the merged network, replacing the foundations’ respective tokens KLAY and FNSA. Holders of KLAY and FNSA will be able to swap their tokens for the new one.

The proposed tokenomics system for the new token emphasizes sustainable value creation. This includes a lower base inflation rate and a 3-layer burning model created to encourage deflation as activity on the network increases. 24% of newly issued tokens will also be burned immediately as a trustworthy Zero Reserve Tokenomics measure. This will all be supported via an ecosystem fund and infrastructure fund that are constantly replenished via block rewards, rather than relying on reserves.

Enhanced governance and interoperability

Klaytn and Finschia also plan to bring together their experiences in practicing good governance to build a  permissionless node validation system to put the spotlight on users and the community, promoting transparency, trust and openness.

To support the seamless migration and interoperability of existing dApps and services on Klaytn and Finschia, the merged chain will support the smart contract platforms EVM and CosmWasm. Ethereum and Cosmos builders will thus be able to gain access to the network.

The foundations are set to host an upcoming event called Klaytn Community Town Hall on Friday to introduce the proposal and facilitate open dialogue and feedback.

QCP Capital: Bitcoin Has $34K Price Potential

QCP Capital: Bitcoin Has $34K Price PotentialBitcoin’s potential for a significant price rally toward $34,000 has been discussed recently by analysts at QCP Capital, the Singapore-headquartered crypto asset trading firm. Despite Bitcoin’s recent lack of major volatility catalysts, QCP’s analysis suggests that a classic support rebound might trigger the return of the highest Bitcoin prices in over a year.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashCrucial price action time-frameAccording to QCP Capital’s latest market update on Tuesday, the upcoming weeks are poised to be crucial for Bitcoin’s price action. The cryptocurrency has been range-bound for months, leaving market observers speculating about the emergence of a new market trend.QCP Capital highlights September as a pivotal month due to the completion of a rising wedge pattern that started during the end of the 2022 bear market. This pattern has guided Bitcoin’s price movement, with the wedge reaching its first termination point at the beginning of September. The specific level of interest is $29,300, which aligns with the current focal point of the Bitcoin spot price.Rally potentialThe analysis ponders whether there will be a sharp rally that pushes the price to the $34,000 resistance level. This scenario has occurred three times this year, as the price kissed the support trendline. The report acknowledges that it might take a few more quiet weeks before the outcome becomes clear. The analysts expressed their intention to buy back their end of September short calls and anticipate going long on end of December volatility in due course.QCP Capital’s perspective aligns with other optimistic views on Bitcoin’s short-term price strength. Some projections even suggest that the 2023 Bitcoin bull market might return by October, although the market sentiment is varied, with some cautioning about the possibility of new lows before a broader recovery.Macroeconomic trendsTurning to macroeconomic trends, QCP Capital indicates that significant change is not on the immediate horizon, echoing the status quo in the crypto space. Comparing the current situation to the compressed trading environment of the crypto winter in 2018 and 2019, the analysis suggests that a macroeconomic shift would be required to reinvigorate the market, similar to what has happened in the past.Bitcoin’s volatility has reached historic lows, as illustrated by data just published by on-chain market intelligence firm, Glassnode. While a game-changing macro environment shift isn’t imminent, there are short-term catalysts on the crypto calendar for the upcoming months. These include events like Mt. Gox creditor payouts, the GBTC vs. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) lawsuit, potential SEC decisions on Blackrock/Fidelity’s Bitcoin spot ETF applications, and potential news related to centralized crypto exchanges and stablecoins. The September deadline for comments on the initial Bitcoin spot price exchange-traded fund (ETF) applications is particularly noteworthy, as it’s widely seen as a turning point for the industry. Europe’s first Bitcoin spot ETF, which began trading on Tuesday, is being custodied by Fidelity Investments, marking another step in the maturation of the cryptocurrency market.

South Korean card issuers line up stablecoin plans as regulation nears

South Korean credit card companies are preparing to develop a stablecoin-powered payment system, Yonhap Infomax reported. The Credit Finance Association (CREFIA)—a nonprofit comprising credit card firms, leasing companies, and venture capitalists—plans to launch a second task force this month. The group aims to prepare for the anticipated regulatory framework governing stablecoins.Photo by rupixen on UnsplashStablecoin cards, settlement under reviewThe task force will discuss building a comprehensive system covering the entire transaction process, from stablecoin-based card payments to merchant settlements. The agenda also includes testing stablecoin-powered debit cards, which would allow users to pay at standard card terminals just as they would with traditional cards. This second task force will include nine credit card companies—including Samsung Card, Shinhan Card, and KB Kookmin Card—that participated in the initial task force formed last July. At that time, CREFIA and the participating firms held weekly meetings on regulatory and technological issues while gathering input from external advisors. Through that process, the group examined whether credit card companies could legally engage in stablecoin businesses under the current Specialized Credit Finance Business Act. They also jointly filed 30 stablecoin-related trademark applications and reportedly sought consultations with financial authorities on securing payment and settlement accounts for stablecoin transactions. This push into the sector comes despite lingering uncertainty regarding the government’s phase-2 virtual asset legislation. Progress on the draft has been delayed due to disagreements between financial and monetary authorities. The Bank of Korea favors a model where only consortia with majority bank ownership can issue stablecoins. By contrast, the Financial Services Commission opposes setting a specific bank-ownership threshold in law to allow participation by non-bank firms. The forthcoming legislation is expected to comprehensively regulate stablecoins, including their issuance, distribution, and custody, leaving companies to await clearer guidance. Despite the legislative delays, the credit card companies are positioning themselves to move quickly once the rules are finalized. Investor sentiment shifts to U.S. equitiesWhile traditional financial firms explore digital assets to expand their business, South Korean investors are prioritizing U.S. equities over cryptocurrencies for this year. According to a weekly survey of 2,000 respondents conducted by CoinNess and Cratos, 30.8% said they plan to focus on U.S. stocks. Cryptocurrencies ranked second at 25.5%, followed by gold and silver (18.3%), Korean stocks (12.8%), and cash (12.7%). Market sentiment toward Bitcoin also appears cautious. 22.7% of respondents said they expect Bitcoin to rise or surge this week, down from 28.9% the previous week. Meanwhile, 38.3% predicted the price would move sideways, while 39% expected a fall or plunge. Asked about the broader crypto market, 50.8% of respondents said fear or extreme fear was prevailing.
