Floki Inu acts in response to Hong Kong SFC's warning

Policy & Regulation·February 01, 2024, 2:58 AM

Meme coin project Floki Inu has implemented restrictions on users in Hong Kong from accessing its staking programs following a warning from the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC).

Last week, the regulatory body labeled Floki's staking initiatives as "suspicious investment products'' and urged caution among investors. On Jan. 26, it specifically cautioned Hong Kong users about the Floki and TokenFi staking programs, emphasizing the promised annualized returns ranging from 30% to over 100%. The Commission expressed concern over investment products that make claims of returns deemed "too good to be true."

Staking program access block in Hong Kong

Responding to the SFC's warning, Floki Inu took proactive steps to prevent users in Hong Kong from participating in its staking programs. In an official blog post which was published on Tuesday, the project's team announced the implementation of "practical measures" to block Hong Kong-based users from joining the staking programs. Additionally, prominent warnings have been placed on the Floki and TokenFi staking websites, clearly stating the ineligibility of Hong Kong users to participate.

The SFC emphasized that neither of the mentioned investment products holds authorization in Hong Kong, warning that unauthorized schemes provide limited to no protection under its Securities and Futures Ordinance (SFO). Investors engaging in such unauthorized schemes may face the risk of losing their entire investments.

Addressing regulatory concerns

Floki Inu's team has responded to the regulatory concerns by actively collaborating with legal advisers to address potential regulatory issues associated with the staking project. The team committed to responsible community practices, while affirming its dedication to implementing measures to prevent Hong Kong users from participating in the staking program until regulatory concerns are resolved.

As of Jan. 29, there is no record of Hong Kong users joining the staking programs, according to the Floki team. Furthermore, the team revealed that offline marketing activities in Hong Kong had already been halted before the project's launch in December 2023.

Clarifying high yield

Addressing the SFC's primary concern regarding the high annual percentage yield (APY), the Floki team provided explanations. They clarified that the rewards are subject to volatility influenced by market dynamics and the value of staking rewards may fluctuate based on the market valuation of the token rewards.

The team attributed the high APY for its staking programs to the allocation of the majority of TokenFi's token supply to token stakers, highlighting that the project had not raised venture capital funds or conducted a presale. They noted that market forces beyond their control had significantly increased the TokenFi price from its initial market cap at launch.

In response to potential user confusion, the Floki team emphasized the complete decentralization of the staking programs for Floki and TokenFi, assuring users of a clear understanding of how the programs operate. They concluded by expressing their commitment to ongoing collaboration with regulatory bodies to ensure compliance and foster a responsible and transparent environment for users.

Community response has been largely positive with one crypto influencer claiming:

“You will not find a more legit team in #Crypto than $FLOKI. I’ve known about them for years and everyday they continue to handle themselves in the most informative, structured, and professional way.”

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following Surge

Subreddit Token Price Slide Following SurgeReddit’s subreddit community tokens, Moon and Brick, having experienced a remarkable surge in prices last week fueled by a significant increase in trading volume, have taken a downward trajectory, plummeting in price.Photo by Mike Petrucci on UnsplashCrypto.com token listingThe Moon token, associated with Reddit’s r/CryptoCurrency community boasting over 6.5 million members, shot up from approximately $0.09 to nearly $0.58 on July 19, just after Singapore trading platform Crypto.com listed the token.Concurrently, trading volume spiked to around $3 million on Wednesday, marking an impressive boost.Similarly, the Fortnite subreddit community token, Brick, which Crypto.com distributes as a reward to contributors of r/Fortnite, also witnessed a substantial price surge. The token’s value surged from $0.01 on July 17 to approximately $0.10 on July 19, according to data from CoinGecko.Surge acknowledgedIn response to the sudden price surges, Crypto.com released a note early on Monday, acknowledging the surge both tokens had experienced recently. However, in a swift turn of events, both tokens experienced a significant downturn in the past 24 hours, with their prices plummeting by over 20%.As of midday (ET) on Monday, Moon was trading at $0.33, while Brick was valued just under $0.05, as reported by CoinGecko data. Moreover, trading volumes for both tokens have significantly contracted during this period of volatility. Moon’s volume shrank from over $1 million on July 23 to approximately $200,000 on Monday. On the other hand, Brick’s volume saw an even more drastic decrease, falling from approximately $210,000 on July 23 to a mere $26,000 on Monday.Terms of service changeMarket analysts speculate that the recent change in Reddit’s Terms of Service might have been the catalyst for the initial price increases. Reddit’s alteration of its Terms of Service on July 16 to permit users to trade community tokens and avatars potentially triggered the surge in token prices. It appears that Web2 centralized virtual goods such as coins and awards are making way for tradable Web3 community points.Speculating on the token price surge, Bobby Ong, the Co-Founder and COO of Malaysia-headquartered cryptocurrency data aggregator CoinGecko, wrote via Twitter last week: “Both tokens increased at the speculation of the changes coming at Reddit. No one knows exactly what is happening but Reddit deprecating Web2 Coins & Awards while allowing trading of their Web3 CPs could be something to monitor in the coming months.”Despite the recent downturn, the overall crypto space remains highly dynamic and unpredictable. Events such as the listing of tokens on prominent trading platforms can cause rapid price fluctuations. As always, that scenario makes it essential for investors to approach these assets with caution. While Moon and Brick may have encountered a sharp decline, the cryptocurrency market, in general, has proven its resilience and ability to rebound with Bitcoin currently holding a unit price of $29,125. As the market continues to evolve and gain wider acceptance, investors will need to continue to exercise caution and consider the volatility inherent in digital assets.

Crypto Oasis Founder Thinks UAE Set Up For Crypto Success

Crypto Oasis Founder Thinks UAE Set Up For Crypto SuccessAs the dust settles on 2023's Dubai Fintech Summit, which took place last week, one takeaway offered by the Co-Founder of blockchain ecosystem firm Crypto Oasis is that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has set itself up for success where crypto business is concerned. In speaking with crypto publication CoinTelegraph on the fringes of the Dubai Fintech Summit, Crypto Oasis Co-Founder and Managing Partner Saqr Ereiqat suggested that the regulatory infrastructure that the UAE has put in place provides an ideal foundation upon which crypto companies can develop and prosper.Photo by Mo Ismail on PexelsRegulatory infrastructureEreiqat pointed to some key fundamentals that crypto entrepreneurs and start-up founders should look at when deciding on the location that will best meet their needs and help to optimize their route to market and ultimate success. This includes the regulatory infrastructure. The UAE authorities and regulators at a national level, together with their colleagues within the regulatory agencies in the Emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, have been doing some heavy lifting in this regard over recent months. They’ve all been working on establishing a workable regulatory framework, and as part of that, a licensing process. In the case of Dubai, its Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) has started to issue preliminary or Minimum Viable Product (MVP) license approvals that enable crypto startups to get started, while providing them with a pathway towards obtaining Full Market Product (FMP) licensing at a later stage.Talent poolThe other key requirements that Ereiqat set out were digital infrastructure alongside an ability to attract and provide a pool of talent relative to the crypto assets space. In respect of these key considerations, Ereiqat believes that the UAE hits the target in each case.“The UAE’s regulatory framework is more streamlined and business-friendly compared to the complex and fragmented regulatory environment in the US,” he told the crypto media firm.To enhance these fundamentals, Ereiqat also alluded to a depth of capital that could potentially find its way into UAE-based crypto businesses, easing these start-ups’ efforts in executing on funding rounds as they look to achieve growth.Ereiqat maintains that the interest in the region is already evident, citing a data-point that suggests there are 1,800 Web3-centric businesses already operating in the region, with more than 8,000 people working for those start-up businesses. Speaking to that reality further, he said:“The Dubai FinTech Summit was a significant event that brought together stakeholders from the fintech industry […] The presence of crypto and Web3 leaders and projects at the event is an important indicator of the growing interest and adoption of these technologies in the region.”This enthusiasm and belief in the existence of the right Web3 business environment in the UAE was echoed at that event by both Coinbase Founder and CEO Brian Armstrong and Ripple Founder and CEO Brad Garlinghouse. Both industry figures featured as keynote speakers at the event. Armstrong alluded to the potential of Coinbase establishing a base in Abu Dhabi while Garlinghouse announced the opening of a Ripple office in Dubai.
