High-profile sports sponsorships driving Crypto.com user base expansion

Web3 & Enterprise·February 14, 2024, 2:09 AM

Crypto.com, the Singapore-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange platform, has outlined that it has seen significant growth thanks to high-profile sports sponsorship and advertising.

Reaping the rewards

The company has established advertising partnerships with Formula 1 (F1) motor racing and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). These lucrative sponsorship deals have propelled the exchange into the spotlight of two massive fan bases, contributing to its expansion.

In an interview with Cointelegraph last week, Eric Anziani, president and chief operating officer of Crypto.com, discussed the company's successful advertising campaigns with F1 and the UFC, as well as its naming rights deal for the Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles.

In 2021, what was then the Staples Center was renamed to the Crypto.com Arena in a $700 million naming rights deal. Anziani expressed gratitude for these partnerships, emphasizing the importance of staying top of mind for users in the competitive cryptocurrency market.

That same year, the company signed a multi-year partnership deal with leading French football club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), rolling out various PSG-related marketing activities since then.

Brand recognition benefits

Market surveys conducted by Crypto.com indicate a high level of global awareness and brand recognition among retail cryptocurrency users. The exchange's logo prominently displayed during F1 races and UFC events has helped it reach millions of fans worldwide.

ESPN reports an average of 1.11 million viewers per race for the 2023 F1 season in the United States alone, with global viewership exceeding one billion over the entire race calendar. Similarly, the UFC boasts a global audience, with some of its biggest fights attracting millions of pay-per-view viewers.

Anziani highlighted the effectiveness of these partnerships in bringing people into the cryptocurrency space.

User base approaching 100 million

These partnerships have significantly contributed to Crypto.com's growing user base, which is approaching 100 million users in 2024, up from an estimated 80 million in the previous year.

Anziani discussed the factors that drive users' choice of exchange platforms, emphasizing the importance of compliance, security, convenient access to cryptocurrency and competitive fees. He noted that different users prioritize different aspects based on their trading preferences and requirements.

The firm is not alone in pursuing high-profile sports sponsorship deals. Rival platform OKX has an ongoing sponsorship deal in place with Manchester City Football Club in the English Premier League (EPL). It also has doubled down recently on the sponsorship of F1 racing team McLaren. Other notable partnerships include crypto gambling platform Stake.com’s sponsorship of Sauber F1, crypto exchange platform Kraken’s deal with Williams F1 and BingX’s sleeve sponsorship agreement with Chelsea football club in the EPL.

High-profile marketing initiatives are alive and well, although in a much more sober way than in 2022 when six crypto companies featured in Super Bowl advertising in the United States. Kraken’s chief marketing officer, Mayur Gupta, recently stated that the Super Bowl is no longer an effective means of promotion for crypto companies.

Woo X launches tokenized T-Bills for retail investors

Taipei-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange Woo X has announced the launch of tokenized United States Treasury Bills (T-Bills), marking a significant milestone for the crypto-sector retail investment landscape. In a press release, the company outlined that it has partnered with London-based institutional tokenization platform OpenTrade in order to bring its Earn Vaults product backed by real-world assets (RWAs) to market. The product is being heralded as the first protocol offering tokenized T-Bills accessible to retail investors.Photo by Jorge Salvador on UnsplashStable yield accessWilly Chuang, Chief Operating Officer of Woo X, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, highlighting its potential to bridge the gap between conventional financial securities and the cryptocurrency market. He told CoinDesk in an email that “for the first time, retail users on a centralized exchange can instantly access an interest-bearing account backed by U.S. Treasury Bills.” With RWA Earn Vaults, Woo X users now have access to stable, predictable yields on their USDC holdings, backed by U.S. Treasury Bills, without encountering additional complexities. These yield-bearing products offer attractive annual percentage rates (APR) ranging from 4.5% to 4.7% for USDC holders. Subscriptions accrue real yields, fully backed by U.S. Treasury Bills, with current annual percentage rates (APRs) for seven-day and 28-day terms standing at approximately 4.5% and 4.75%, respectively. OpenTrade is a tokenization platform supported by Circle, the issuer of the world's second-largest stablecoin, USDC, lending further credibility to the partnership, with USDC boasting a market cap of $34 billion. OpenTrade had established links with Centre, the now-dissolved collaboration between Circle and Coinbase, and the Marco Polo enterprise blockchain project. Interest in RWA tokenizationRecent institutional interest in the RWA tokenization sector is exemplified by BlackRock's launch of the USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund, valued at over $298 million. This development underscores the increasing recognition of digital assets as viable investment instruments by traditional financial giants. Additionally, a recent report by CoinGecko highlighted the profitability of tokenized RWAs in the crypto space, positioning it as the second most lucrative narrative in the first quarter of 2024. Lim Yu Qian, an analyst at CoinGecko, noted the substantial profitability of the RWA narrative compared to other sectors, emphasizing its growing prominence.Franklin Templeton's Franklin OnChain U.S. Government Money Fund (FOBXX) has emerged as a notable treasury tokenization fund, reflecting the sector's maturation and investor confidence.  Woo X's product offerings extend beyond tokenized T-Bills, encompassing index-linked perpetuals covering crypto meme coins and layer-2 tokens in collaboration with market maker Wintermute. The exchange's native token, WOO, plays a pivotal role in governance and incentivization, offering users the opportunity to stake WOO and earn an average APR of 12.66%. The recent robust performance of WOO, experiencing a price surge of about 30% since its April 13 low, has served to boost the platform further. Tokenization of U.S. T-Bills has witnessed significant growth, with over $1.15 billion worth of assets tokenized through various products by April 2022, highlighting the growing appeal of digital asset-based offerings in the financial sector. This latest product offering benefits retail market participants, giving them increased access to diverse and lucrative investment opportunities in the burgeoning digital asset space.

OKX relaunches in the United States

Global crypto exchange platform OKX has announced that it has relaunched its exchange services and Web3 wallet within the U.S. market. In a press release published on April 15, the company said that customers can now access the platform in the United States, “with existing customers migrating seamlessly and new customers gradually gaining access ahead of a full nationwide launch.”Photo by Danny Burke on UnsplashOnboarding OKCoin usersIn terms of existing customers, the company is referring to users of OKCoin, the former name of OKX, who will now be onboarded onto the newly launched OKX exchange service. The Seychelles-based company, which was originally founded and operated in China, has established its U.S. headquarters in San Jose, California. The company has appointed Roshan Robert, formerly an executive at Morgan Stanley and Barclays, as its U.S. CEO. Commenting on the U.S. market relaunch, Robert stated: "With the US advancing crypto regulatory clarity, we see tremendous opportunities to build trust and deliver secure, compliant digital asset solutions.” Inflection pointIn a blog post published to the firm’s website, Robert said that he had been watching the development of the industry since its earliest days, but that he thinks that the crypto sector has now reached “a critical inflection point.” He added that more so than ever before, the crypto sector is currently interacting more directly with traditional finance and capital markets.  Referring directly to what platform users can expect from the relaunched service in the U.S., the OKX U.S. CEO said that the firm plans on rolling out new features throughout the year as part of its vision to build a crypto super app. Rollout of the platform’s services in the U.S. will be carried out on a phased basis. The firm also intends to offer integrations with local banks, together with full support for major assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDC and USDT.The OKX Wallet will be made available to U.S. users, supporting a range of digital assets across 130 blockchain networks. The wallet will enable users to access a number of Web3 dApps, facilitate the movement of digital assets between blockchain networks and include a number of tools to assist platform users with their trading activities. Entering a ‘new era’It’s likely that a change towards a more positive outlook where the crypto sector is concerned at government and regulatory levels in the U.S., together with a settlement reached with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), has influenced OKX in relaunching its service stateside.  The DOJ had opened an investigation into the company on the basis of allegations that it was operating a money-transmitting business on an unlicensed basis. In its settlement, the company paid fines and penalties totaling $500 million. With that settlement behind it and a more enlightened climate for digital assets having emerged in the U.S., OKX described the service relaunch as “a new era for OKX in the U.S.”Yves La Rose, CEO of Web3 banking project, the Vaulta Foundation, said that OKX’s U.S. expansion is a signal, indicating that “a new era of compliant, wallet-led Web3 innovation is underway.” Diana Pires, an executive at crypto payments firm Beam, expressed a similar take, stating on X that OKX was relaunching “because the world’s largest economy is finally ready for crypto,” adding that “the floodgates are now open for international crypto companies.”

Metaplanet surpasses 4K Bitcoin following stock split

Metaplanet, the Tokyo-headquartered Bitcoin corporate treasury firm, has purchased an additional 696 BTC, following a stock split, bringing its total Bitcoin holding to 4,046 BTC.Photo by Kanchanara on Unsplash$341 million in BitcoinThe company publicized details of its latest Bitcoin purchase on X on April 1. It outlined that funding of this purchase was enabled through the allocation of cash held by the firm as a consequence of the sale of put options.  The average purchase price of the 696 BTC was 14,586,230 yen ($97,694). The average price the firm has paid per Bitcoin in relation to its entire holding of the leading digital asset is 12,943,181 yen ($86,689). Its overall Bitcoin holding has a total value of approximately $341 million. Taking to X, the firm’s CEO, Simon Gerovich, said that Metaplanet’s Bitcoin Income Generation business achieved 770 million yen ($5.2 million) in Q1 revenue, while year-to-date its Bitcoin yield has reached 95.6%. Stock split & bond issuanceThis purchase follows both a stock split and the issuance of bonds worth 2 billion yen ($13.3 million). On March 31, Metaplanet filed a disclosure outlining details of the bond issuance. The company issued the zero interest bonds via its Evo Fund. Buyers will be permitted to redeem the newly issued bonds at face value by Sept. 30. In an X post, Gerovich suggested that the bond issuance was being implemented in order to facilitate the company “buying the dip,” taking advantage of a downturn in the Bitcoin unit price over recent weeks. In a notice filed on Feb. 18, Metaplanet outlined details of its 10-to-1 stock split. The company described how it executed a reverse 10-to-1 stock split last August. This has created a problem for investors as in the interim, the stock price has increased significantly. Consequently, the share price is unwieldy, placing a substantial financial burden on investors. On that basis, the latest stock split will enable greater investor accessibility and improved liquidity. Arising from that, Metaplanet expects that it will gain a broader investor base. On March 30, Gerovich reported that Metaplanet stock is now a component within Betashares’ Crypto Innovators ETF. Betashares is an Australian asset manager with over $50 billion in assets under management.  The Metaplanet CEO suggested that the development pointed towards “growing interest from institutional investors,” while expressing his satisfaction with Australians now having access to Metaplanet’s Bitcoin First Strategy via the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). The ‘Asian MicroStrategy’Metaplanet is being regarded by many industry commentators as the “Asian MicroStrategy,” referring to the American Bitcoin treasury firm that recently rebranded to Strategy, having pioneered a particular approach to building a position in Bitcoin within a corporate treasury. Metaplanet appears to have adopted the same Bitcoin playbook. In an appearance on the Coin Stories Podcast recently, Metaplanet’s Gerovich said that he encourages his friends to put “100% of their net worth into Bitcoin.” Last month, the company confirmed that it was pursuing a strategy to accumulate 10,000 Bitcoin in 2025 and 21,000 Bitcoin by 2026. The firm is now ranked ninth in the world as a corporate Bitcoin holder. Within Asia, it is the leading corporate holder of the world's largest digital asset.
