High-profile sports sponsorships driving Crypto.com user base expansion

Web3 & Enterprise·February 14, 2024, 2:09 AM

Crypto.com, the Singapore-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange platform, has outlined that it has seen significant growth thanks to high-profile sports sponsorship and advertising.

Reaping the rewards

The company has established advertising partnerships with Formula 1 (F1) motor racing and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). These lucrative sponsorship deals have propelled the exchange into the spotlight of two massive fan bases, contributing to its expansion.

In an interview with Cointelegraph last week, Eric Anziani, president and chief operating officer of Crypto.com, discussed the company's successful advertising campaigns with F1 and the UFC, as well as its naming rights deal for the Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles.

In 2021, what was then the Staples Center was renamed to the Crypto.com Arena in a $700 million naming rights deal. Anziani expressed gratitude for these partnerships, emphasizing the importance of staying top of mind for users in the competitive cryptocurrency market.

That same year, the company signed a multi-year partnership deal with leading French football club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), rolling out various PSG-related marketing activities since then.

Brand recognition benefits

Market surveys conducted by Crypto.com indicate a high level of global awareness and brand recognition among retail cryptocurrency users. The exchange's logo prominently displayed during F1 races and UFC events has helped it reach millions of fans worldwide.

ESPN reports an average of 1.11 million viewers per race for the 2023 F1 season in the United States alone, with global viewership exceeding one billion over the entire race calendar. Similarly, the UFC boasts a global audience, with some of its biggest fights attracting millions of pay-per-view viewers.

Anziani highlighted the effectiveness of these partnerships in bringing people into the cryptocurrency space.

User base approaching 100 million

These partnerships have significantly contributed to Crypto.com's growing user base, which is approaching 100 million users in 2024, up from an estimated 80 million in the previous year.

Anziani discussed the factors that drive users' choice of exchange platforms, emphasizing the importance of compliance, security, convenient access to cryptocurrency and competitive fees. He noted that different users prioritize different aspects based on their trading preferences and requirements.

The firm is not alone in pursuing high-profile sports sponsorship deals. Rival platform OKX has an ongoing sponsorship deal in place with Manchester City Football Club in the English Premier League (EPL). It also has doubled down recently on the sponsorship of F1 racing team McLaren. Other notable partnerships include crypto gambling platform Stake.com’s sponsorship of Sauber F1, crypto exchange platform Kraken’s deal with Williams F1 and BingX’s sleeve sponsorship agreement with Chelsea football club in the EPL.

High-profile marketing initiatives are alive and well, although in a much more sober way than in 2022 when six crypto companies featured in Super Bowl advertising in the United States. Kraken’s chief marketing officer, Mayur Gupta, recently stated that the Super Bowl is no longer an effective means of promotion for crypto companies.

Deutsche Bundesbank joins Singapore’s Project Guardian

The Deutsche Bundesbank, Germany’s central bank, has joined Project Guardian, a collaboration established in 2022 between the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and the financial sector, with an emphasis on the use of asset tokenization to improve liquidity and efficiency within financial markets.Photo by Rachel Davis on UnsplashAssessing DLT technologyIn a press release published on Nov. 8, Bundesbank Executive Board member Burkhard Balz suggested that the central bank is aligned with MAS in that both central banks are interested in determining “how innovative technologies and concepts, such as distributed ledger technology (DLT) or blockchain, can be put to meaningful use in the financial sector.” In joining Project Guardian, the Bundesbank will take part in the Asset & Wealth Management workstream, testing an interoperable blockchain platform for tokenized and digital funds. While the German central bank has just announced details of its participation in Project Guardian, in a speech given at the Layer One Summit, an event which formed part of the Singapore Fintech Festival last week, MAS Deputy Director Leong Sing Chiong welcomed the Bundesbank, alongside the World Bank, to Project Guardian.  The MAS executive clarified that the Deutsche Bundesbank and the World Bank would join the project’s Policymaker Group. He outlined that the role of that group is to “help provide inputs on governance arrangements, guidance on how GL1 [Global Layer One] infrastructures can be developed in line with global standards, and advice on appropriate regulatory guardrails for tokenised asset transactions.” GL1 refers to an initiative that has been established to create the foundational digital infrastructure to facilitate tokenized assets. Cross-border collaborationThrough its involvement in Project Guardian, the German central bank hopes to strengthen cross-border collaboration, while at the same time, progressing matters related to the “standardisation and interoperability of digital assets.” In working towards the goal of standardization, MAS has published two comprehensive reports covering fixed income tokenization and fund tokenization. MAS believes that the use of too many individual private DLT networks is resulting in fragmentation, with a detrimental effect with regard to liquidity. Consequently, the Singaporean central bank is establishing the Guardian Wholesale Network to improve liquidity and achieve asset tokenization at scale. The network will consist of Citi, Schroders, Standard Chartered, UOB and HSBC. Additionally, it was recently announced that SBI Digital Markets, a Singapore-based affiliate company of Japan’s SBI Digital Asset Holdings (SBI DAH), intends to contribute towards greater liquidity through its involvement in a fixed income asset tokenization pilot. Meanwhile, Citi and Fidelity have developed a proof of concept for a digital foreign exchange (FX) swap, enabled within an on-chain money market fund (MMF).  Tokenization inflection pointLeong went on to claim that while nobody has succeeded yet in implementing tokenization at scale, an inflection point has been reached with regard to the use of tokenization. He added that many use cases are promising relative to tokenization but that there is a need for supporting infrastructure “to enable good use cases to scale beyond individual networks.” In the press release, Leong said that the Bundesbank’s expertise “will be invaluable as we work together to enhance liquidity and efficiency of financial markets through asset tokenisation.”

Beyond this, the project is dedicated to forging connections with other NFT initiatives, aiming to become part of the broader global blockchain community. In August of last year, COO Kang participated in a blockchain conference to highlight Nexon’s ongoing transformative endeavors. The transition of offline games to online platforms marked Nexon’s first evolution, while the second ambition revolves around the expansion of its gaming ecosystem using the capabilities of Web3, Kang said.Turning in-game items into NFTsAmong these strategic moves is the development of MapleStory N, the first game within the MapleStory Universe. This desktop-based MMORPG is currently under development and incorporates blockchain technology. MapleStory N will allow gamers to earn items during gameplay, which can subsequently be transformed into NFTs. The fees collected from in-game economic interactions will be distributed as rewards to both contributors within the MapleStory Universe ecosystem and Nexon.Nexon’s blockchain collaborationsAs part of the MapleStory Universe creation, Nexon joined hands with Ethereum scaling blockchain protocol Polygon. In particular, Nexon employs a Polygon Supernet, which empowers developers to tailor a blockchain to suit their gaming requirements.Furthermore, Nexon made its entry into the realm of Japanese gaming blockchain Oasys in April, acting as a validator. Oasys, established in February of last year, aims to popularize play-to-earn (P2E) games.
