Bitdeer sets out mining chip roadmap

Web3 & Enterprise·June 08, 2024, 4:28 AM

Singapore-headquartered Bitcoin mining company Bitdeer has outlined a roadmap of chip development which will culminate in the introduction of its most energy efficient mining chip to date, the “SEAL04” chip.

According to a press release published by the company on June 6, the company outlined that it wanted to be transparent in demonstrating its plans over the short to medium term in terms of research and development and technological advancement.

Iterative progression

The starting point for its roadmap is the SEAL01 chip, which the company introduced in Q1 2024. That mining chip was engineered using a four-nanometer process technology. It was developed in collaboration with a semiconductor fabricator albeit that the company has not disclosed the identity of that fabricator. That chip weighed in at 18.1 Joules/Terahash (J/TH). The SEAL01 represents the company’s first release relative to its SEALMINER technology.

Bitdeer feels that providing guidelines for technology releases will better inform market participants, and that’s important given that uncertainty creates a major difficulty for those operating in the Bitcoin mining space.

With that, Bitdeer is projecting a Q3 2024 release for its SEAL02 miner, which will clock up between 15 and 16.5J/TH. SEAL03 is scheduled for Q4 2024, with an efficiency boost taking it to between 11 and 12J/TH. Finally, the SEAL04 is scheduled for release in Q2 2025. That chip is expected to have an energy efficiency range as low as 5.5-6J/TH.

The two most critical factors for Bitcoin miners to stay competitive include the cost of energy and the level of energy efficiency achieved by the mining equipment that is being used. It’s believed that the roadmap will help in managing miners’ expectations relative to technological advancement.

Gearing up for a post-halving mining environment

To develop the SEALMINER equipment series, Bitdeer outlined last March that it had “assembled an international team of professional engineers specializing in chip design, firmware, and hardware engineering.” At that time, the company suggested that the new range of mining equipment would allow it to assist the Bitcoin mining community “in seizing opportunities following the 2024 halving event.”

Alongside its chip development roadmap, the company came to the industry’s attention earlier this week with stablecoin issuer Tether acquiring a 25% stake in the Singaporean mining equipment developer, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This acquisition makes Tether the second-largest shareholder in Bitdeer, behind Victory Courage Ltd., which is registered to Bitdeer CEO Jihan Wu.

Wu, who co-founded Bitdeer and served as CEO of ASIC manufacturer Bitmain previously, was appointed as CEO of Bitdeer in January. The appointment was made so that Wu could oversee what was expected to be a period of rapid growth at the company.

In the June 6 SEC filing, Tether Holdings Limited disclosed control over 23,587,360 BTDR shares. This significant increase in holdings stems from a private placement deal closed with Bitdeer last week, enabling the Bitcoin miner to secure $100 million in financing. The deal also includes a warrant allowing Tether to purchase up to 5,000,000 additional shares at $10.00 each over the course of the next year.

Bitdeer plans to use the raised funds to expand its data centers, develop ASIC-based mining rigs and support other general corporate purposes.

Indonesian authorities crack down on illegal crypto mining facilities

Recent reports from local media outlets indicate that Indonesian authorities have conducted raids on crypto mining sites, accusing them of illicitly siphoning electricity from the utility poles of the state-owned electricity company. The government’s intervention comes as part of a broader effort to address energy theft and regulate the cryptocurrency mining industry in the country.Photo by Fré Sonneveld on UnsplashTen mining sites raidedOfficials from the state-owned electricity company PLN highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts in exposing the unauthorized mining operations that were tapping into the national grid without approval. According to the reports, the ten illegal bitcoin mining sites which were raided incurred a financial loss of approximately 1.4 billion Indonesian rupees, equivalent to $100,000 for the state. The impact of energy theft extended beyond financial concerns, raising environmental and community-related concerns. Local students, alarmed by the potential consequences, urged PLN and regional police to investigate the mining operations. Subsequent action revealed that the theft was indeed taking place, prompting PLN officers from the Bukit Barisan Customer Service Implementation Unit (UP3) to conduct a raid. However, the officers faced threats and resistance, leading to a close coordination between PLN and the North Sumatra Regional Police. The raid uncovered a total of 1,300 bitcoin mining machines engaged in illegal operations, with each machine consuming a substantial 1,800 watts of electricity. Inspector General Agung Effendi, the North Sumatra Police Chief, disclosed that the illicit activities had been ongoing for an estimated six months, resulting in the arrest of 26 individuals across the ten locations.PLN reassured stakeholders of continued collaboration with the police to prevent further electricity theft and safeguard the national grid from such unauthorized activities. Worldwide concernThe incident in Indonesia reflects a global concern over the energy consumption of cryptocurrency mining operations generally, but also with regard to illegal activity. In recent years, the environmental impact of these operations has become a focal point in public policy debates, with climate activists emphasizing the harm caused. Government officials, on the other hand, express concerns about the potential disruption to the total distribution network if not properly regulated. In September, neighboring Malaysia identified illegal crypto mining activities in the state of Sarawak as the reason for recurrent power disruption. Meanwhile, in Singapore in August, authorities uncovered a crypto mining scam that cheated investors out of $1.3 million dollars. Indonesia joins other countries that have conducted raids on crypto mining operations accused of running large-scale, unregistered facilities. Malaysia has witnessed multiple arrests related to digital asset mines, while in Venezuela, authorities seized bitcoin machines and weapons from a recaptured prison controlled by a criminal gang. Legitimate mining potentialNotably, this marks the first such incident in Indonesia, and energy theft charges in the country are punishable by up to five years in prison or 200% of the stolen energy’s value. Despite these problems, Indonesia also understands the opportunity that exists where legal bitcoin mining is carried out. In May, Ridwan Kamil, Governor of the province of West Java, participated in a fireside chat titled “The Indonesia Bitcoin Mining Campaign.” During that event, Governor Kamil recognized the potential that bitcoin mining offers Indonesia. He stated: “[Indonesia has] the second most geothermal potential in the world — more than 800 rivers with hydropower. As bitcoin allows the transformation of energy into money, bitcoin could be transformative for Indonesia.” The global trend of addressing energy consumption in crypto mining is evident in Kazakhstan, where regulators seek to limit miners’ access to the national grid unless they operate solar-powered mines. Indonesia, with its pro-crypto population, is also moving towards increased regulation, mandating all crypto exchanges to register with the Commodity Futures Exchange (CFX) to continue operations beyond August 2024.

New bill in Singapore could broaden MAS regulatory oversight of crypto

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) is set to gain enhanced powers through the Financial Institutions (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill 2024 (FIMA Bill), currently under consideration in the country's parliament.Photo by Kenneth Koh on UnsplashProfound impactIf the bill passes, it could have a profound impact on cryptocurrency firms operating in Singapore. One significant aspect of the proposed amendments is the expansion of MAS's authority to issue directives to capital markets services license (CMSL) holders involved in unregulated business activities. This move is particularly aimed at firms offering unregulated products that might pose contagion risks to their regulated operations. The bill cites examples such as bitcoin futures and payment token derivatives traded on overseas exchanges. At the moment, the regulator is actively monitoring the crypto space in Singapore, issuing investor alerts relative to unregulated entities. Last month, MAS added imToken, a non-custodial crypto wallet, to its Investor Alert List. The list serves as a means for the regulator to draw attention to entities that may be actively trading within the city-state while being wrongly perceived by the investing public as licensed or regulated entities. Greater powersIn response to potential risks, MAS had previously issued guidance on risk-mitigating measures for CMSL holders conducting unregulated business with retail investors. The FIMA bill seeks to empower MAS further by enabling it to issue written directions specifying the minimum standards and safeguards for CMSL holders and their representatives engaging in unregulated businesses. Cryptocurrency exchanges, potentially categorized as CMSL holders, along with Major Payment Institution (MPI) licensees, may face increased regulatory scrutiny. MAS has been active in implementing measures to curb speculation in cryptocurrency investments and has updated its regulatory framework for stablecoins. The bill introduces additional provisions empowering MAS to compel individuals to participate in interviews and provide written statements. It grants MAS the authority to enter premises without a warrant and obtain court orders to seize evidence. Furthermore, the bill allows MAS to approve agents appointed by foreign regulators for inspecting Singaporean financial institutions. Precursor to ETF offeringThe potential ramifications of the bill extend beyond local regulatory dynamics. Industry observers suggest a connection between these developments and the recent approval of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States. Lasanka Perera, CEO of Independent Reserve Singapore, recently highlighted that the approval of bitcoin ETFs in the U.S. will likely attract major global wealth management firms, intensifying the demand for bitcoin and transforming it into an accessible asset class for traditional institutions. Perera sees relevance in this proposed legislation as it pertains to the potential offering of spot bitcoin ETF products within the Republic of Singapore. While he speculates that it's too early to tell, he said Singapore’s proposed new bill to enhance regulatory authority over financial services, including bitcoin futures, makes provisions for possible spot bitcoin ETFs in the Republic. As Singapore continues to refine its regulatory framework, the proposed amendments reflect a broader trend of regulatory tightening in the global cryptocurrency landscape, emphasizing the importance of compliance and risk management for industry participants.
