HAQQ Network co-founder points to Indonesia’s crypto hub potential

Markets·February 07, 2025, 2:12 AM

Mohammed AlKaff AlHashmi, co-founder of the HAQQ Network, has expressed the view that Indonesia has considerable potential to establish itself as Asia’s largest crypto hub.

AlHashmi made the comments in a discussion with Crypto.news. HAQQ Network claims to be a scalable proof-of-stake-based blockchain, capable of high throughput. The network is fully compatible and interoperable with Ethereum. The project also focuses on the development of a Sharia-compliant Web3.

While the project is headquartered in Niqa Al Dheeb in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Indonesia is also a significant market for the company, given that it has just received regulatory approval for the HAQQ Network’s native token from the Indonesia Financial Services Authority (OJK).

Islamic Coin (ISLM) is the network’s native token. It is being offered as a Sharia compliant digital currency, with Sharia law being the Islamic legal system that governs the lives of millions of Muslims throughout the world.

Gateway market

Offering his thoughts on the Indonesian crypto market, AlHashmi stated:

“When we look at Indonesia as a market, I would say it is incomparable. It can be number one to be honest. Because I have seen statistics of growth happening in a very big volume. The volume of trade, transactions and users, I think Indonesia can be very soon one of the top 3 countries in the world.”

Indonesia takes on added importance for the HAQQ Network project. The project’s co-founder sees the Southeast Asian nation as a gateway into a broader market given that it has the largest Muslim population in the world. He said that if his project is successful in Indonesia, then there will be no barrier to enter markets in other predominately Muslim nations.

The entrepreneur believes that Indonesia is on the cusp of realizing its potential within the crypto sector. He said that Indonesia has a “competitive edge” when compared with other nations. Population size and rapid economic growth feed into that potential, with AlHashmi claiming that Indonesia is primed to become the largest crypto hub in Asia.

Smooth regulatory process

From a regulatory perspective, he also feels that Indonesia is outperforming other jurisdictions. The HAQQ Network project team experienced a smooth process in acquiring regulatory approval for ISLM recently. He believes that although the process was detailed, it was completed quicker than he would expect in other countries.

AlHashmi added that “regulations are flexible enough to enable project owners to do good business to protect the community as well.”

Local regulator, the OJK, has expressed an interest in exploring the development of Sharia-compliant crypto assets. Earlier this month, Hasan Fawzi, OJK's executive head overseeing crypto assets supervision, told local media that the regulator is open to advancing Sharia-based cryptocurrencies.

Hasan stated:

“Globally and regionally, this is a common practice. It is not unusual to create crypto assets that adhere to Sharia principles.”

The OJK executive is particularly interested in tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs). He believes that if this proves to be successful, it could lead to further Sharia-complaint crypto products being launched. The OJK is currently testing tokenized RWAs within a sandbox environment.

CoinGecko expands data offering through Zash acquisition

CoinGecko expands data offering through Zash acquisitionCoinGecko, the Malaysian crypto data aggregator, has intensified its focus on the non-fungible token (NFT) market through the recent acquisition of London-headquartered Zash. The move forms part of CoinGecko’s initiative to enhance its API offering by providing comprehensive data on digital collectibles.Photo by Andrey Metelev on UnsplashSolving for crypto data fragmentationIn a statement published to its website on Wednesday, CoinGecko provided further details on its acquisition of the enterprise-grade NFT and blockchain analytics company. Separately CoinGecko Co-Founder Bobby Ong told Tech in Asia that the crypto data sector is fragmented. As a consequence, it leads to inefficiency as market participants are forced to navigate multiple crypto data APIs. It’s in an effort to solve that issue that Ong and CoinGecko have moved to acquire Zash.Zash Co-Founder and CEO Parit Patel expressed optimism about the evolving nature of NFTs and their potential to unlock new use cases globally, creating value for both companies and consumers. The company plans to introduce new services derived from the acquisition by the second quarter of 2024.Enriched data offeringIn its own statement, CoinGecko emphasized its commitment to offering more NFT-related metrics. The acquisition aims to enrich CoinGecko’s data offerings with information such as metadata, historical trades and lending data related to NFTs. The specific financial details of the deal were not disclosed. With the integration of Zash, users can expect access to a broader range of data across multiple blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Polygon, BNB Chain (formerly Binance Smart Chain), Bitcoin Ordinals and Solana. The extended services will cover NFT lending information indexing various marketplaces, such as Blend, X2Y2 and NFTfi.In reflecting on the acquisition, CoinGecko Co-Founder TM Lee considered the move in terms of the ongoing process of asset tokenization. Taking to the X platform, Lee wrote:“Any asset that can be tokenized, will be tokenized. Like tokens, NFT is a core primitive to the crypto economy stack. We’ve been building http://coingecko.com/nft earlier even in the bear market and I’m excited on possibilities within the NFT industry with @zash_api joining us!”Monitoring wash tradingOne notable feature introduced through Zash is the ability for users to monitor wash trading, an illegal form of market manipulation that gives the false impression of market activity. CoinGecko clarified that this feature would be available for “major collections” minted on Ethereum.Wash trading, involving the simultaneous buying and selling of assets, has been associated with the NFT bubble of 2022. Blockchain forensic firm Chainalysis reported that over 100 profitable wash traders collectively earned nearly $9 million from this activity. However, it noted that the majority of NFT wash traders have been unprofitable, resulting in losses exceeding $416,984 from more than 150 wash trades. While the NFT market has faced challenges, with total sales currently at $80.8 million, significantly lower than the peak in August 2021 when daily sales exceeded $2 billion, CoinGecko’s strategic move positions the company to provide users with enhanced tools for assessing and ranking their cryptocurrency holdings. Established in 2014, CoinGecko operates as a platform offering comprehensive data and information on digital currencies, contributing to the quantitative evaluation of cryptocurrency portfolios.

Legislator calls for Bitcoin reserve in Hong Kong

In an interview with local media, Hong Kong legislator Johnny Ng called for the Chinese autonomous territory to implement a national Bitcoin reserve. Ng made the comments in a discussion with Hong Kong-based state-owned Chinese language media outlet, Wenweipo. The legislator believes that there is an opportunity for Hong Kong to take advantage of China’s “one country, two systems” approach to governance, which gives it the freedom to implement such a reserve despite mainland China remaining much less enthusiastic where Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are concerned.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashSpot Bitcoin ETF impactThe Hong Kong Legislative Council member suggested that as a first step, Hong Kong needs to assess the impact that spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States have had. Spot Bitcoin ETFs were launched in the U.S. in January. The leading spot Bitcoin ETF, IBIT, provided by asset manager BlackRock, has achieved a growth rate five times faster than any other ETF launched in the past. El Salvador and the Kingdom of Bhutan are examples of nations that have made Bitcoin a significant component within their national reserves. A recent report suggests that El Salvador currently holds 6,000 Bitcoin which it purchased at an average price of $45,465. In November, Arkham Intelligence reported that Bhutan was holding Bitcoin with a dollar value which had exceeded $1 billion at that time. Ng also referred to a move by individual states in the U.S. towards holding Bitcoin as a reserve asset. In August, the state of Wisconsin increased its holdings of shares in BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF, IBIT. Last month, the state of Pennsylvania introduced a bill to make Bitcoin a strategic asset. Ohio has proposed similar legislation while Alabama’s State Auditor, Andrew Sorrell, has suggested that his state should establish a Bitcoin reserve. Reducing price volatilityNg believes that furthering the Chinese autonomous territory’s dealings relative to Bitcoin could prove beneficial, given that Bitcoin has the potential to play a role in attracting more talent and investment to Hong Kong. Additionally, he feels that the development of Bitcoin reserves at state level could help in reducing the price volatility of the asset as it goes through the process of global adoption. The Hong Kong lawmaker also believes that there is an opportunity for the Chinese antonymous territory to benefit from first mover advantage, stating that “the value of Bitcoin will be more stable, causing more and more other countries to follow suit and reduce their holdings of traditional assets.” Ng's latest interview follows a similar comment he made on X in July, where he suggested that Bitcoin is worth considering as an official financial reserve for a country. David Bailey, CEO of Bitcoin Magazine, took to X stating: “Hong Kong making moves, SBR here we go. President Trump must make the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve his top priority the day he enters the White House.”In recent days, soundings from Japan and Russia suggested that neither of these countries was prepared to establish Bitcoin reserves. However, just like with the advent of the Bitcoin ETF in the U.S., following Trump’s expression of interest in the establishment of a strategic Bitcoin reserve, the level of consideration of the matter has increased considerably among governments around the world.
