Binance launches Sharia-compliant staking product

Web3 & Enterprise·July 17, 2025, 8:50 AM

Global crypto exchange platform Binance has launched “Sharia Earn,” a crypto staking product that has been certified as being Sharia-compliant.

Sharia-compliant financial products adhere to Islamic law, with sharia law being Islamic canonical law based upon the teachings of the Koran. The product incorporates multi-token staking featuring BNB, Ether (ETH) and Solana (SOL).

The product has been built on top of existing infrastructure which Binance had already used to offer “Simple Earn Locked Products” relative to BNB and liquid staking in the case of ETH and SOL. Users of the product can earn staking rewards on crypto assets, while secure in the knowledge that they are investing in compliance with Islamic finance principles.

‘Most meaningful product yet’

The new product was announced by the company during a Binance Square Webinar. Binance CEO Richard Teng described it as the firm’s “most meaningful product yet.” He referred to the launch of the product as a defining moment both for Binance and the broader crypto sector.

Teng said that “a truly inclusive financial system must respect the values and needs of every community, and that’s the vision behind Sharia Earn.” He added that “Islamic finance’s core tenets—transparency and shared prosperity—are universal,” asserting that these same values are at play in driving Binance.

The platform contracted Amanie Advisors, a Dubai-based global Islamic finance advisory service, in order to obtain Sharia-compliant certification for its latest product.

Bader Al Kalooti, Binance’s Head of Operations, Marketing & Growth for the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region, said that “crypto adoption has surged in many Muslim-majority countries, but yield-generating products have remained largely inaccessible due to compliance concerns.” He claimed that the arrival of “Sharia Earn” addresses this issue.

While this is Binance’s first Sharia-compliant product, it’s not the first major exchange to enter this market. Last year, Bybit, a Dubai-headquartered global crypto exchange, engaged with ZICO Shariah Advisory Services in order to obtain certification for the trading of Sharia-compliant digital assets. At the time, Bybit claimed to have launched the world’s first crypto Islamic account.

Growing Islamic finance sector

Islamic law prohibits interest-based transactions. Crypto staking can be structured in such a way as to avoid interest. Staking is considered to be acceptable as rewards are not fixed. Staking rewards are seen as profit-sharing, with the staker retaining ownership of the asset and being open to the risk of potential losses.

Some forecasts suggest that the overarching Islamic finance sector could reach $4 trillion in the years ahead. That represents a market opportunity for crypto platforms to cater to this market by taking the time to acquire Sharia-compliant certification for their crypto products.

Binance and Bitget are not the only entities to spot this market opportunity. A new crypto trading platform called BurjX, founded by Canadian entrepreneurs Adam Ferris and Omar Abbas, has been established in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with a vision of developing Sharia-compliant and regulatory-compliant crypto products.

While no definitive timeline has been established, Abbas told the UAE English language daily newspaper, the Khaleej Times, that his company “will partner with the appropriate Sharia boards, and when we do launch, it’s going to be approved by the appropriate regulators.”

South Korean Prosecutors Fail to Recover Do Kwon’s Assets

South Korean Prosecutors Fail to Recover Do Kwon’s AssetsSouth Korean prosecutors have disclosed that they have been unable to find the millions of dollars that Do Kwon, CEO and Founder of Terraform Labs, made from the crypto business.©Pexels/GratisographyOverseas assetsThe latest development in the case suggests that Kwon may have tried to hide his assets overseas, making it more challenging for authorities to recover those funds.Prosecutors claim that Do Kwon transferred funds from his personal accounts to overseas bank accounts under his mother’s name. Additionally, he allegedly used cryptocurrency to purchase real estate and other assets in the United States, which he then registered under his mother’s name. This tactic is commonly used by those seeking to evade detection and protect their assets from seizure.Binance halt requestSouth Korean authorities are understood to have reached out to global cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, requesting it to halt any withdrawal request associated with Kwon. Binance confirmed to CoinTelegraph that it is cooperating with the request, stating: “We provided Korean law enforcement authorities with the requested assistance. Since we cannot comment on ongoing law enforcement investigations, for any further comment please reach out to the prosecutors.”Blockchain forensicsThe situation surrounding Do Kwon’s case is not uncommon in crypto. Although there are blockchain forensic analysis specialists who collaborate with government authorities in tracing digital assets, the task is not without its difficulties. By analyzing the blockchain, investigators can trace the flow of funds and identify the individuals involved in illicit activities. This technology has already been used in a number of high-profile cases, including the 2014 Mt. Gox hack and the 2020 Twitter hack.Nevertheless, the anonymous nature of blockchain transactions makes it much easier for individuals who engage in fraudulent or illegal activities. However, as cryptocurrency becomes more mainstream, governments around the world are cracking down on those who attempt to take advantage of the system.Tightening regulationIn South Korea, authorities have been working to regulate the cryptocurrency industry and protect consumers from fraud. The government has implemented a number of measures, including requiring cryptocurrency exchanges to register with the Financial Services Commission and banning anonymous transactions. Despite these efforts, however, incidents of fraud and embezzlement continue to occur. The fight against cryptocurrency-related crime is far from over. As the industry continues to grow and evolve, criminals will continue to find new ways to exploit the system. It is up to regulators and law enforcement officials to remain vigilant and adapt to these changes in order to protect consumers and ensure the integrity of the financial system. In the case of Do Kwon, the investigation is ongoing, and it remains to be seen what the final outcome will be. Prosecutors estimate total proceeds of Do Kwon’s alleged crimes to amount to 91.4 billion won ($71 million) while 414.5 billion won ($316 million) has been identified relative to Terraform Labs more broadly.

First Toyota vehicle in Bolivia purchased with USDT as inflation bites

In a first for Bolivia, Japanese automaker Toyota saw one of its vehicles purchased with the stablecoin USDT, according to a recent X post by digital asset trust company BitGo. The transaction underscores growing cryptocurrency adoption in the Latin American country, which is grappling with soaring inflation and a shortage of U.S. dollars. The transaction was facilitated by a partnership between Toyosa (the official Toyota distributor in Bolivia), BitGo, and Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin. The sale highlights the increasing use of digital assets for commercial and retail payments, as the global stablecoin market cap recently reached an all-time high of $293 billion at the time of publication. Confirming the milestone, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated on the social media platform X that, in addition to Toyota, the USDT stablecoin is now also accepted by distributors of BYD and Yamaha vehicles in Bolivia.Photo by Christina Telep on UnsplashCrypto use surges amid inflation and dollar shortage The development comes as Bolivia faces 25% inflation, the highest in 34 years. With the local economy under pressure, many Bolivians are moving their money into cryptocurrencies in an effort to protect their savings, according to Bloomberg. U.S. dollars have become increasingly scarce. Unofficial exchange rates have jumped to 14 bolivianos per dollar, nearly twice the government's rate. That gap is pushing people toward stablecoins like USDT, which are easier to access and hold their value. The shift is already showing up in payment trends. Digital transactions surged more than fivefold in the first half of 2025, reaching nearly $300 million. Regional adoption and Toyota’s blockchain pushThe rise in crypto use in Bolivia is part of a broader shift across Latin America. According to a recent report from analytics firm Chainalysis, crypto adoption in the region jumped from 53% to 63% in the 12 months ending June 2025. The only region to outpace this growth was Asia-Pacific, which saw a 69% year-over-year increase. El Salvador stands as another prominent example in the region, having adopted Bitcoin (BTC) as legal tender in September 2021 and currently holding over 6,300 BTC in its treasury. Separately, Toyota Motor Corporation has been actively exploring applications for blockchain technology. In March, its subsidiary Toyota Financial Services, in collaboration with Daiwa Securities and MUFG Bank, launched its first security token bonds on Progmat, a platform founded by MUFG with backing from other big banks like Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) and Mizuho. The initiative is aimed at strengthening the Toyota Group’s ties with individual investors and supporting the growth of the digital bond market.
