Hong Kong to launch spot Solana ETF ahead of U.S.

Markets·October 23, 2025, 6:49 AM

A spot Solana (SOL) exchange-traded fund (ETF) is set to debut in Hong Kong next week, according to the South China Morning Post. Managed by ChinaAMC (HK), the Hong Kong subsidiary of Chinese financial services company China Asset Management, the product will begin trading on Oct. 27 and will be available against both Hong Kong and U.S. dollars.

The Hong Kong listing comes amid growing global interest in Solana-based investment products. While this marks a first for the city, the first country to trade a spot Solana ETF was Canada, where four products from 3iQ, Purpose, Evolve, and CI Financial went live on the Toronto Stock Exchange in April 2025.

U.S. institutions await regulatory approval

In the U.S., institutional interest is also high, though a product has yet to be approved. According to Bloomberg senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, 23 separate ETP filings for Solana have been submitted in the U.S. This matches Bitcoin, with both assets having the highest number of filings among 35 cryptocurrencies tracked, out of a total of 155 crypto ETP filings overall.

The push for exchange-traded products mirrors rising institutional investment in the Solana ecosystem itself. Several firms have recently established corporate SOL treasuries. Forward Industries spent $1.6 billion on its treasury and filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to raise up to $4 billion from share sales to acquire more SOL. Similarly, Sharps Technology announced a collaboration with Coinbase Global to expand its reserve strategy, and an SEC filing showed that Citadel and its affiliates hold a portion of the outstanding shares in DeFi Development Corp. (DFDV), another SOL treasury firm.

Uniswap expands to Solana network

Solana's platform has also seen wider technical integration. On Oct. 16, the decentralized exchange Uniswap began supporting the network, allowing its users to connect Solana wallets and swap SOL tokens. Uniswap stated the move helps address fragmentation issues by supporting both Solana and Ethereum, the two largest DeFi ecosystems. According to DefiLlama data, SOL currently boasts $10.88 billion in total value locked (TVL) in decentralized finance, while ETH TVL amounts to $83 billion.

Separately, the Solana team recently promoted the network's technical resilience. Following a recent Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage, the team shared an analysis on X indicating a 97.6 resilience index, noting that only 77 of its 1,295 nodes were affected, suggesting a 6% dependency on AWS.

Market performance lags despite growth

Despite these developments, the price of SOL, the sixth-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, has not reflected the positive sentiment in the short term. Trading at roughly $186, SOL is down 13.74% over the past month, according to Kraken data. The asset remains 36.49% below its all-time high of $293.31, which was reached on Jan. 19, 2025.

ACE Exchange founder arrested in major fraud crackdown in Taiwan

Taiwan's cryptocurrency scene has been rattled by the arrest of David Pan, the founder of ACE Exchange, a prominent cryptocurrency platform.Photo by Timo Volz on PexelsAccording to local media outlet Liberty Times, this development is part of a broader operation targeting fraudulent activities involving 13 additional suspects. Law enforcement authorities, as of now, have confiscated assets totaling around NT$200 million ($6.4 million), dealing a significant blow to the alleged fraudulent operations. A sophisticated fraud schemeThe arrest of Pan, alongside company executive Lin Nan, stems from accusations of a sophisticated fraud scheme orchestrated by the duo, along with their team. The modus operandi involved deceptive tactics, including the use of fake advertisements on popular social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. Over the past three years, more than 100 investors have reportedly fallen victim to the scheme, losing over one billion yuan ($140 million). Lin Nan, leveraging social media, enticed potential investors with promises of quick wealth through the listing of virtual currencies on well-known exchanges. Simultaneously, David Pan lent credibility to ACE Exchange, fostering trust in the virtual currencies listed on the platform. However, investors soon discovered that the virtual currencies touted as having realizable value were, in reality, "junk coins" with plummeting values or no circulation options. Ace Exchange office raidLegal charges filed against the suspects include fraud under the Criminal Code, the Money Laundering Prevention Act and the Banking Act. Law enforcement agencies in Taiwan conducted multiple raids, including at ACE Exchange offices. Lin Nan's residence yielded NT$111.52 million ($3.6 million) in cash, with additional cryptocurrency seizures bringing the total to over NT$200 million ($6.4 million). In response to the scandal, ACE Exchange has distanced itself, asserting that the arrested individuals are not current employees. The company clarified that Pan had ceased active involvement in daily operations as of 2022. ACE Exchange is actively cooperating with the investigation and has positioned itself as a witness in the case. MOCT delistingDespite the ongoing investigation, ACE Exchange, founded in 2018 and a dominant player in Taiwan's crypto market, continues to operate, upholding regulatory obligations and prioritizing user interests. However, the incident has prompted the platform to announce the delisting of the MOCT-TWD trading pair, effective Jan. 8, in alignment with its commitment to regularly evaluate and delist tokens not meeting stringent criteria. This development occurs amid heightened scrutiny of cryptocurrency exchanges globally. CoinDCX, a major crypto investment firm, recently faced allegations of bank and crypto fraud on its mobile application. Similarly, Lee Jeong-hoon, former chairman of Bithumb, South Korea's major crypto exchange, received an eight-year prison sentence over alleged fraud, awaiting an impending appeal verdict. Taiwan, like Hong Kong, had also been dealing with the fallout from the fraudulent activity of Dubai-headquartered crypto exchange JPEX. David Pan is also the founder of the Dubai-based ZORIXchange cryptocurrency platform. Prior to crypto ventures, Pan worked for KPMG in Taiwan as its COO for startups and innovation. These cases underscore the critical need for comprehensive regulation of the crypto ecosystem. As digital assets gain popularity, the risks of fraudulent activities rise, necessitating collaboration between governments and regulatory bodies to establish and enforce stringent regulations that protect investors and uphold the integrity of virtual crypto exchanges.

Metaplanet boosts Bitcoin holdings during economic uncertainty

Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has increased its Bitcoin holdings, purchasing an additional 20.195 BTC for approximately 200 million yen ($1.2 million), as announced after the Tokyo Stock Exchange closed on Monday. This acquisition brings the firm's total holdings to 161.2677 BTC, valued at over $10.1 million. According to The Block, the recent purchase is part of a broader strategy, initiated with the company's decision to allocate 1 billion yen ($6.3 million) for Bitcoin acquisitions funded by an upcoming bond issuance. This move follows a previous buy in June worth 250 million yen.Photo by Traxer on UnsplashStrategic investment responseMetaplanet's investment strategy mirrors that of U.S.-based MicroStrategy, which has significantly integrated Bitcoin into its treasury assets. MicroStrategy currently holds 226,331 BTC, amounting to more than 1% of the total Bitcoin supply. Citing economic challenges like high government debt and the depreciating yen, Metaplanet views Bitcoin as a hedge against economic instability. Following Metaplanet’s latest acquisition, its stock saw a 1% rise on Monday, with an overall increase of 233% since it began investing in Bitcoin.
