Chainalysis said in a report released today that the hacker behind the Binance breach swapped about $325 million in stablecoins into $285 million worth of Ethereum over roughly 20 minutes to evade asset-freeze measures.
The blockchain analytics firm estimated total outflows from the incident at about $6.4 billion and frozen assets at about $2.8 billion. It said those figures were broadly in line with estimates from Binance, which put the amounts at $6.3 billion stolen and $3.0 billion frozen, and Arkham, which estimated $6.01 billion in outflows and $2.8 billion frozen.
Chainalysis said it had identified North Korea-linked hacking group TraderTraitor, affiliated with the Reconnaissance General Bureau, as being behind the attack with a high degree of confidence. As decisive on-chain evidence, the firm pointed to real-time commingling between funds stolen from Binance and funds tied to the Bitget breach in September. It also said it detected sophisticated automated laundering patterns, including thousands of circular wallet-to-wallet transfers and the pre-transfer of 1 TRX to specific addresses.

According to DeXe, Binance said user funds are safe and it will cover all losses. DeXe also warned there will be no token migration, compensation claims or airdrop, and said any private messages claiming otherwise are scams.

According to Web3 security data infrastructure provider GoPlus (GPS), an attacker on Oct. 29 withdrew 22.43129453 ETH and 11 ERC-20 tokens from zkLink Nova’s L1 custody contract in a single transaction. The stolen assets were worth about $797,016.48 at the time of the attack.
GoPlus said the vulnerability was in the Arbitrator.claimMessage function, which records the hash of a message authenticated through the source chain’s official message-service callback in the temporary storage variable finalizeMessageHash. After the call, the value was not deleted and each call did not require a new authentication callback, allowing an already authenticated message to be reused.

Layer-1 blockchain Initia said it plans to resume L1 and rollup operations on Nov. 2. The chain upgrade will apply a MoveVM patch that has undergone an independent security audit and isolate the remaining forged balances held by the hacker, while preserving existing transaction records.

Its DEX will temporarily restrict trading immediately after restarting and rebalance liquidity pool asset ratios to reflect market prices. Any proceeds generated in the process will be returned to affected liquidity providers.
Asset transfers through bridges and exchanges will resume after network stability checks are completed. For security reasons, the withdrawal waiting time for LayerZero OFT-based WETH and AUSD0 will be set at 24 hours.

He also said the limited drop in Bitcoin’s price despite a large-scale hack suggests the cryptocurrency market has matured.
