Around 20,000 sailors and over 2,000 ships are currently stranded in the Persian Gulf, International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Dominguez stated on April 17. He urged nations to intensify diplomatic efforts to support evacuation plans for the stranded crew members. Dominguez also emphasized the need to resume normal shipping operations swiftly by removing mines and other hazards threatening merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz at an appropriate time. He added that this should include providing practical guarantees to the shipping industry, such as securing reasonably priced insurance.
