The grandson of Mafia boss John J. Gotti has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for fraudulently obtaining $1.1 million in U.S. government COVID-19 relief funds and investing a significant portion in cryptocurrency, the Department of Justice announced. According to CoinDesk, Carmine G. Agnello, whose grandfather led the Gambino crime family, one of New York City's five major Mafia organizations, submitted false information to the Small Business Administration (SBA) between April 2020 and November 2021. Agnello claimed he would use the funds for his auto parts and recycling business, including employee salaries, but instead used them for personal purposes, notably investing in a cryptocurrency business. The specific business was not disclosed.
