BTC developer warns of phishing attacks exploiting Google domain

May 17, 2026, 10:04 PM
BTC Core developer and co-founder of crypto custody firm Casa, Jameson Lopp, has warned cryptocurrency users not to trust any external messages by default. He pointed to a phishing attack that exploited an official Google domain. According to U.Today, the attack involves inserting a large volume of text into the name input field of a Google backup contact request form. This tactic pushes the legitimate system message down the page, exposing a fake security alert and a phishing link at the top. Lopp specifically identified emails, phone calls, SMS, and messenger apps as external notification channels that should be treated with suspicion.
