Vitalik says AI-driven 50% Bitcoin crash is unlikely
September 07, 2026, 4:29 AM
Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin pushed back on claims that long-term advances in security technology and artificial intelligence could break Bitcoin’s security system and send the price down more than 50%.
Buterin said network-layer attacks could be addressed by upgrading clients and mining pools, while the odds of Bitcoin’s hash function or proof-of-work system breaking down are extremely low. Buterin added he does not agree with the view that AI could weaken Bitcoin’s security enough to drive BTC down more than 50% over the next two years.
