Hackers demand $3M in XMR from Revolut after fake Italian government data request

Revolut provided personally identifiable information for some users after being deceived by a forged request from an Italian government agency, and the hackers later demanded 6,000 XMR, or about $3 million, according to the Financial Times. The hackers threatened to sell the stolen customer data to criminal groups if payment is not made within 24 hours. The hackers had earlier compromised an email account belonging to an Italian government agency with legal authority and used it to request customer information from Revolut, the report said. Revolut then provided data tied to about 680 customer accounts, including passports, driver’s licenses, identity verification photos and transaction records.
