Korean Crypto Exchange Giants Lead Market Expansion With Increased Listings

South Korea’s top three cryptocurrency exchanges Upbit, Bithumb and Coinone have all increased the number of cryptocurrencies they listed for trading this year compared to last year, making them responsible for leading the market’s activity and expansion.

Dynamic shifts in listing and delisting trends

A recent analysis by local news outlet News1 on the number of cryptocurrencies listed and delisted this year on the country’s major fiat-to-crypto exchanges Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit and Gopax — listed in order of market share size — revealed that Upbit and Coinone have increased their number of listings and delistings compared to last year.

The remaining three exchanges, on the other hand, showed differing results. Bithumb increased its number of listings by 47 compared to the number listed last year, while delistings decreased by three, and Gopax listed eight fewer tokens and delisted one more token. Meanwhile, Korbit’s listings decreased by 37 tokens, while delistings decreased by only one.

Among the five exchanges, Bithumb listed the highest number of new cryptocurrencies this year, with 80 new currencies in total added as of Monday (local time). This represents a more than double increase compared to the 33 currencies added last year. It is also 18 more than Coinone’s 62 new currencies and 50 more than Upbit’s 30.

Differing approaches based on situational factors

Gopax and Korbit have taken a more conservative approach compared to Upbit, Bithumb, and Coinone, which have been more aggressive in their listing strategies. In particular, as of Oct. 4, Bithumb has also been offering free transaction fees in an effort to regain its market share. This aggressive approach can be interpreted as an effort to weather the recent crypto winter, although it hasn’t been very successful.

Conversely, the exchange that delisted the most cryptocurrencies this year was Coinone, with 38 taken down as of Monday, marking a significant increase compared to last year when it delisted 26. This can be accredited to the platform’s efforts to improve its reputation and operating system following an incident earlier this year where two former employees were booked for taking bribes in exchange for listing certain cryptocurrencies. Coinone CEO Cha Myung-hun subsequently issued an apology and pledged to take proper measures to prevent such an event from recurring. Since then, the exchange has been actively looking into carrying out delistings tied to issues like the amount of currency in circulation or market price manipulation.

Bithumb and Upbit came in second and third for most delistings this year, with 22 and 18, respectively.

However, Korbit showed the least fluctuation in the number of listings and delistings this year — nine and three, respectively — among the five exchanges. This is a sharp contrast owing to its conservative listing policy. Speculation suggests that the platform might adopt a more aggressive stance if market conditions improve in the second half of the year.

On the other hand, Gopax listed 10 tokens and delisted eight tokens. The exchange has notoriously been dealing with operational difficulties due to regulatory roadblocks despite optimistic outlooks after its acquisition by Binance, one of the world’s most prominent exchanges. Along with the recent appointment of Cho Young-joong as the new CEO of CityLabs, the company that acquired an 8.55% stake in Gopax, the exchange has been working on resolving regulatory issues and improving the state of operations.

Four Pillars for Success in Korean Security Token Market

Four Pillars for Success in Korean Security Token MarketOn Wednesday, blockchain experts in various fields gathered at the 2023 Blockchain Meetup Conference held in Seoul to discuss issues with security tokens and their outlook.©Pexels/Alesia KozikWhat attracted security token businesses’ attention at the meeting was a presentation by Jung Eui-heon from Lambda256, a subsidiary of Korean crypto exchange Upbit’s operator Dunamu. He shared four pillars for success in the Korean security token market.Security tokens gaining traction in KoreaSecurity tokens have been a trending topic in the Korean blockchain industry since the Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC) allowed the issuance and trading of security tokens last February. Furthermore, a 2022 report jointly published by Boston Consulting Group and Singaporean investment platform ADDX predicted that the total size of illiquid tokenized assets worldwide would reach $16 trillion by 2030.Against this backdrop, here are the four keys to successful security token projects that Jung outlined.Technology adaptationFirst, he emphasized the importance of adopting rapidly changing technology. To tackle the issue, he suggested teaming up with advanced tech companies for long-term collaboration. When choosing tech partners, companies should ensure they are sustainable, possess technological prowess, hold credibility on high volume transactions, and maintain the security level of financial institutions, Jung advised.Forging partnershipsThe second point he mentioned was the need to forge partnerships. The FSC’s February guideline requires the issuance and distribution of security tokens to be managed separately. This means that security token projects require collaboration between issuers, distributors, account managers, asset holders, and tech companies.New securities productsJung also noted that discovering new securities products is crucial. Partnering with existing fractional investing companies may help accelerate the security token project initially, but in the long run, enterprises will eventually have to create products in various fields such as gaming, movies, and entertainment.Token liquidityLastly, Jung underlined the token liquidity, which plays a crucial role in determining its prices. Issuers will need to find various distributors and vice versa. Securing liquidity requires the establishment of a technical standard that improves interoperability and compatibility, he highlighted.

Japan’s FSA Proposes Tax Exemption for Unrealized Crypto Gains

Japan’s FSA Proposes Tax Exemption for Unrealized Crypto GainsThe Financial Services Agency (FSA) of Japan has taken the step of putting forward amendments that provide a notable tax exemption for unrealized gains on cryptocurrency holdings.Photo by Erik Eastman on UnsplashFSA proposalThe move is significant in that it spares domestic companies from the standard 30% corporate tax rate typically imposed on digital assets up until now. According to reports in local media, that proposal was detailed in a comprehensive 16-page document outlining various regulatory modifications. The most pivotal change within this document is the exemption of domestic companies from the annual “unrealized gains” tax on cryptocurrencies. Unlike some countries that only tax crypto assets when they are converted into fiat currency, Japan currently enforces an annual tax on these digital assets.2023 tax reform agendaThe proposed amendment has garnered support from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, indicating its potential passage. These discussions are part of Japan’s broader tax reform agenda for 2023, suggestive of the Asian nation’s interest in fostering a favorable environment for the blockchain and cryptocurrency industries. It is important to note that this tax exemption applies exclusively to companies that issue their own tokens and does not extend to entities solely involved in investing in other digital currencies. Additionally, individual crypto investors will still be subject to a maximum income tax rate of 55% on earnings exceeding JPY 200,000 ($1,355) related to cryptocurrency, categorized as “miscellaneous income.”The exemption is structured in a way that excludes these digital coins when assessing a company’s asset market value, provided specific conditions are met. Presently, Japanese law mandates that companies holding crypto assets must pay taxes on unrealized gains at the end of each tax period. To qualify for the tax exemption, a company must meet specific criteria outlined by the tax authority. Firstly, the company must be the issuer of the cryptocurrency in question. Additionally, it must retain continuous ownership of the crypto asset after issuance, while the asset itself remains subject to transfer restrictions.Blockchain ambitionsThis development aligns with Japan’s broader ambition to nurture and expand its blockchain and cryptocurrency sectors. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida recently articulated a vision for a “new form of capitalism,” emphasizing the importance of fostering innovation and growth in emerging industries, inclusive of the Web3 sector. As Japan moves forward with these changes, it signals its interest in creating a conducive environment for blockchain and crypto ventures to thrive.Over time Japan has been iteratively building a framework in respect of digital assets. In 2017 the country recognized Bitcoin as a legitimate property in accordance with the Payment Services Act (PSA). That same year, the Tax Agency classified crypto earnings as miscellaneous income. In 2020, crypto assets were included in Japan’s fund settlement law. Around the same time frame, the FSA brought in the requirement for crypto exchanges to register and obtain a license. These amendments also form part of a series of changes that the Japan Blockchain Association (JBA), an industry advocacy group, has been canvassing for. The proposed changes reflect a pragmatic approach to taxation, doing away with a paper profits taxation treatment in favor of a more progressive approach.

Token rankings by category — such as most swapped tokens and most rising tokens — that were previously available on the “Swap” tab have been moved to the “Home” tab and placed in the foreground of the screen. Rotonda also explained that it aims to provide a more customizable experience by adding more detailed chart features. The wallet also now supports the Sui mainnet, bringing the total number of supported mainnets to 12.This development comes shortly after Rotonda recently launched Burrito Wallet in the Latin American region in a move to expand its global user base.
