‘Okcoin’ to ‘OKX’ global rebrand

Founded in 2013, Okcoin will be undergoing a name change to “OKX,” aligning with OK Group’s overarching branding strategy. Hong Fang expressed her personal connection to Okcoin, stating:

“I’ve been part of Okcoin for five years. Over the years, we have put a lot of love and passion into our brand and product.”

She emphasized that this rebranding effort, beginning in Singapore, will extend to Europe and the United States in the coming months, ensuring consistency across key operational jurisdictions. Despite the name change, OKX maintains that customers can expect the same high-quality services within the same regulatory framework under the new brand. Providing the rationale for the change, Hong Fang went on to state:

”We also believe it’s time for a change. Rebranding to OKX in our key operational jurisdictions will be great for our customers and business. I’m very excited about what to come next.”

Previous rebranding activity

Fang also revealed that OK Group has already sunsetted the “Okcoin” brand and product in several regions, including Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, Hong Kong, and others. This transition aims to create a unified and recognizable identity for the group’s crypto ventures.

The United States holds particular significance for OK Group’s global strategy, and the company remains committed to that market. Fang acknowledged the unique challenges encountered in the US but expressed the company’s dedication to empowering individuals and protecting freedom through technology within the US market. She stated: “It is home base for a lot of us on our team. It is special to us.”

OKEx rebrand

This rebranding news comes approximately one year after OK Group initiated a similar transition with its subsidiary, formerly known as OKEx. In December 2022, OKEx transformed into “OKX,” expanding its scope beyond being a centralized crypto exchange. The move aimed to embrace DeFi, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and Web3. OKEx, founded by OK Group CEO Star Xu in 2017, had played a significant part in terms of innovation in the cryptocurrency space during that time.

OK Group’s decision to rebrand its crypto ventures under the unified name “OKX” signifies a strategic shift toward creating a more cohesive and streamlined brand presence in the global crypto market. The transition stands out as yet another iteration in the development of global crypto platforms within an ever-changing crypto ecosystem. As Hong Fang put it, “Okcoin was started almost 10 years ago.” . . . “We have been unequivocally investing in our Okcoin team and infrastructure ever since.”

Busan Blockchain Special Zone Gears Up with Expert-Led Operations Committee

Busan Blockchain Special Zone Gears Up with Expert-Led Operations CommitteeGovernment officials and various executives from financial enterprises have been appointed as members of the operations committee of the Busan Blockchain Regulation Free Special Zone project, according to local news outlet Etoday on Tuesday. This project is geared towards growing the city as a blockchain hub and nurturing blockchain-related businesses in the special zone that are exempt from regulatory oversight. The operations committee will be responsible for overseeing the designated area, fostering new businesses and facilitating the development of Busan’s blockchain industry.Photo by Maicon Fonseca Zanco on PixabayDiverse lineup of expertsA total of 25 members have been appointed to the committee, including two ex-officio members — Lee Sung-kwon, Deputy Mayor of Busan for Economic Affairs, and Son Sung-eun, Policy Advisor for Financial Startups in Busan. Other members include Kim Sang-min, the leader of Busan’s initiative to establish its own digital asset exchange; Lee Keun-ju, President of the Korea Fintech Industry Association; and Jin Hyeong-gu, Vice President of KakaoPay, along with other relevant personnel and academic experts. Notably, the only representative affiliated with a cryptocurrency exchange is Seo Byung-yoon, Director of Bithumb’s Economic Research Institute. The participation of Jin Hyeong-gu, Vice President of KakaoPay, is also noteworthy given the fact that KakaoPay is under the internet juggernaut Kakao Group along with GroundX and Klaytn Foundation — two entities that served as the main driving force of blockchain projects at Kakao. However, KakaoPay clarified that its involvement in the operations committee is unrelated to any plans for blockchain and virtual asset-related businesses, instead attributing it to Jin’s experience and expertise in anti-money laundering (AML) procedures. Prior to joining KakaoPay, he had been an AML expert at prominent financial institutions like the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and Kookmin Bank.In addition, Kiwoom Securities and Hanwha Asset Management are both members of the Busan Blockchain Industry Association. Kiwoom Securities explained that it was asked to join the committee to serve as a representative of the association.Key milestones and plansThe committee’s first meeting is scheduled for Nov. 9, the first day of this year’s Blockchain Week in Busan (BWB) event, during which it will discuss matters such as the appointment of a chairman and detailed plans for setting the special zone in motion. The promotion committee of the city’s plan for a digital asset exchange, which has been active until now, is also being dissolved as the term for the members serving in the committee has ended. Subsequently, the new operations committee will become a priority. The committee’s detailed blueprint and action plan will be unveiled during BWB. Touting the theme “Target 2026 Blockchain Busan,” the event is set to host local and overseas experts in the field of blockchain and Web3 to jointly discuss the prospects and potential of Busan to become an urban blockchain hub by 2026.

True Potential of Asian Crypto ETFs Yet to Be Realized

True Potential of Asian Crypto ETFs Yet to Be RealizedA recently published report by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd. (HKEX), the Hong Kong stock exchange, has found that crypto exchange traded funds (ETFs) have the potential to play a significant part in unlocking the next phase of digital asset expansion in Asia.©Pexels/Burak The WeekenderThe report, titled “Crypto ETF: Key to unlocking the next phase of digital asset growth in Asia,” highlights how crypto ETFs could attract more institutional investors and lead to increased liquidity in the digital asset market. Furthermore, HKEX claims that the ETF investment mechanism can play its part in offering a more regulated and safe manner through which investors can gain exposure to digital assets.Regulatory progressWhile the report cites an Asian regulatory environment that is becoming increasingly more supportive of digital assets of late, it still identifies a need for further progress to be made to improve the level of regulatory clarity and to provide a truly standardized approach to digital assets. That, it says, will result in crypto ETFs becoming more accessible, offering a diversified way in which the investor can access and gain exposure to digital assets in Asia.Nonetheless, HKEX applauds the work done thus far by regulatory authorities in Hong Kong and Singapore, where regulatory frameworks relative to crypto ETFs have been implemented. Those are measures that the Hong Kong stock exchange believes will increase investor confidence, and in turn, bring about further adoption of digital assets.Modest daily trading volumeBetween December 16 and February 7 the two Bitcoin ETFs and one Ether ETF listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange achieved a daily trading volume of $1.19 million. That’s rather underwhelming when compared with the $3 billion in daily volume being achieved by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) relative to its Bitcoin and Ether futures ETF in the United States. On the New York stock exchange ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF achieves a daily average trading volume of $196 million. These findings are a bit counter-intuitive given the contrasting regulatory approaches in the two territories. In the US, regulators have failed to approve a physically settled Bitcoin ETF. Furthermore, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has denied the attempts of Grayscale Bitcoin Investment Trust (GBTC) to convert the Bitcoin fund into an ETF. Meanwhile, Hong Kong has much more regulatory clarity but yet trading volume in crypto-related ETFs remains minuscule by comparison with the United States.Despite that, the report remains upbeat with regard to what can be achieved in the market with crypto-related ETFs. It makes a case for crypto ETFs as a means for traditional financial institutions to enter the digital assets market with relative ease. Similarly, it sees a role for global stock exchanges in facilitating future growth of crypto-related ETFs and in developing new ETF products that could unlock access to specific digital assets or bespoke investment strategies.

Aevo opens up network to other developers

Aevo, the Singaporean crypto derivatives platform, is gearing up to broaden its ecosystem by allowing other protocols to build on its rollup infrastructure. ‘The future is modular’Currently, Aevo exchange is the sole application on its rollup, but according to Julian Koh, co-founder of Ribbon Finance, the platform's parent protocol, the intention is to open it up for other developers. On Tuesday, Koh retweeted a social media post by the company which stated “The future is modular,” adding the comment “build whatever.” Koh told The Block that "the primary angle here is we are currently built on our own rollup — but Aevo exchange is currently the only app on this rollup. Our plan is basically to open this up for other [developers] as well and build an ecosystem around our exchange."Photo by Shubham Dhage on UnsplashTransitioning to CelestiaAevo, specializing in options and derivatives trading, operates on its own Layer 2 network, built using the OP Stack and running atop the Ethereum blockchain. In a cost-saving initiative, the platform plans to transition to Celestia for storing transaction data in the near term. Celestia launched on mainnet last October with the aim of enhancing blockchain scalability. It’s a modular data availability network which securely scales relative to the number of network users. This expansion is part of a broader roadmap set to be unveiled in the coming weeks, as Aevo looks towards achieving aggressive growth. According to DeFi data aggregator DeFiLlama, Aevo has already been hitting ever higher numbers in recent months. Only two months ago, the protocol had $10 million total value locked (TVL). At the time of writing that metric has increased to $50 million. Last month, the platform achieved a new record-high weekly trading volume level in excess of $500 million. Julian Koh attributes this growth in part to Aevo's yield-bearing balances. Users deposit their crypto, which is then sent to MakerDAO to generate yield. In return, users receive a derivative token to trade on the Aevo platform, providing a mechanism for traders to earn yield while actively engaging in trading. 2023 rebrandRibbon Finance, which initially launched Aevo separately, merged the projects under the Aevo branding in July 2023. As part of the rebrand, an Aevo token will be introduced, with a 1:1 exchange rate for RBN token holders during migration. Post-rebrand, Aevo plans to roll out an incentive program aimed at boosting the platform's metrics.  Looking ahead, Aevo plans to delve deeper into yield offerings, drawing inspiration from Ribbon Finance. The platform aims to launch yield strategies in Q1 of this year, allowing users to lock up their crypto in various setups designed to generate returns, with the tokens being unavailable for trading during this period. One notable strategy that has contributed to Aevo's appeal is the pre-launch trading of upcoming tokens. The platform supports trading for tokens expected to launch soon, often through airdrops, providing an opportunity for traders to hedge against airdrops or lock in specific prices before the official launch. The project team membership draws on past experience at Coinbase, Kraken and Goldman Sachs, with academic backgrounds attained from Stanford, MIT and Cornell University.
