Dunamu Distributes 4,100 NFTs for Climate Change Campaign

Web3 & Enterprise·August 25, 2023, 8:13 AM

Dunamu, the operator of the South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Upbit, announced that it has distributed 4,100 non-fungible tokens (NFTs) from the Climate-sensitive Biological Indicator Species (CBIS) list in collaboration with four agencies under the Ministry of Environment — the National Institute of Biological Resources, the Nakdonggang National Institute of Biological Resources, the Honam National Institute of Biological Resources, and the National Institute of Ecology. This comes as part of efforts to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity and habitat protection amid the threat of climate change.

Themed NFTs for conservation

The CBIS list outlines species whose seasonal activities, habitat area, and population size are susceptible to being impacted by climate change, thus requiring continuous observation and management by the government.

Dunamu, along with the four environmental institutions, minted NFTs representing 15 different species from the list — such as the white eye bird and the camellia tree — to distribute to participants of their Resource Circulation Climate Action Campaign.

The latest round of NFT distributions was carried out in collaboration with the Honam National Institute of Biological Resources from May 19 to August 11. It is the first of four to be carried out over the course of the year following their initial announcement to do so in May.

Empowering climate action beyond boundaries

Participants showed a positive reaction to the utilization of emerging technologies such as NFTs and the metaverse, which enabled them to contribute to climate change efforts without the limits posed by time and space. By organizing fun missions within the metaverse and gifting NFTs to participants, Dunamu and the environmental agencies were able to highlight the severity of the climate crisis while simultaneously making the concept of resource circulation more accessible and easier to understand. Dunamu reported that during the three-month period of the first campaign, the designated campaign space within Dunamu’s metaverse platform, 2ndblock, also racked up a cumulative visitor count of 73,000 users.

The second campaign has also commenced and is running from now until October 2. This time around, Dunamu is working with the Nakdonggang National Institute of Biological Resources to issue 1,000 NFTs of four species: the tree frog, barn swallow, kumgang minnow, and little egret. Noteworthy artists will also contribute to creating the NFTs, including those from the Botanical Artist Society of Korea.

In order to partake in the campaign, participants must complete the stamp-collecting mission in the campaign space on 2ndblock. Lucky participants who are chosen to receive NFTs must register their issued gift code on Upbit’s NFT marketplace.

“As a result of our deliberation on ways to contribute to the environment and society with our technology and resources, many people have shown interest in our online and in-person climate efforts,” said Lee Sirgoo, CEO of Dunamu. He also expressed hopes for continued participation and support for the remaining NFT distributions and campaigns to promote environmental protection and biodiversity conservation.

This collaboration between the private and public sectors which combines online and in-person activities stands out as an innovative method for combatting climate change.

Oman’s Regulator Invites Feedback on Virtual Asset Framework

Oman’s Regulator Invites Feedback on Virtual Asset FrameworkProgressing toward the establishment of its own virtual asset regulations, the Sultanate of Oman is embarking on a significant step by soliciting public feedback on its comprehensive framework. The framework, which governs digital assets, is being developed by the Capital Market Authority (CMA) of Oman. The move reflects the country’s commitment to creating a robust regulatory environment for the virtual asset sector. The CMA’s consultation paper, released last week, outlines the agency’s objectives in crafting this regulatory framework. It aims to provide a viable financing and investment avenue for issuers and investors while also addressing the inherent risks associated with the virtual asset class. Central to this initiative is the integration of business requirements and measures to prevent market abuse.Photo by Niklas Weiss on Unsplash26 key questionsAt the heart of this regulatory endeavor are 26 crucial questions presented to industry stakeholders. Their valuable input will help shape the framework’s core components. These include provisions related to regulatory standards and licensing prerequisites for virtual asset service providers (VASPs), corporate governance, risk management, and the issuance of virtual assets. The proposed framework, as disclosed in the consultation paper, encompasses a spectrum of digital assets. This spans utility tokens, security tokens, fiat-backed and asset-backed stablecoins, and other currencies adhering to the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) definition of virtual assets. However, a noteworthy proposal that has garnered attention is the potential prohibition of privacy coins issuance, a decision pending public feedback.Aiming to reinforce accountability and stability, the CMA may mandate that VASPs establish a local presence in Oman through legally recognized entities and physical offices. Additionally, minimum capital requirements could be imposed on these entities. The envisaged framework may also stipulate that virtual asset firms maintain a low percentage of assets in hot wallets, conduct audits of safeguarded assets, and provide evidence of reserves.Shaping regulation through feedbackWith the consultation phase set to conclude on August 17, the public’s valuable feedback will shape the direction of Oman’s virtual asset regulations. The most salient viewpoints may find their place on the CMA’s official website. Following this consultation period, the CMA will proceed to finalize the regulatory framework.Although the public announcement regarding the launch of a regulatory framework was made on February 14, Oman’s journey toward regulating the virtual asset industry began well before. In November 2020, the National Committee for Combating Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing initiated discussions on forming a task force.Comprising officials from the CMA and the Central Bank of Oman, the task force explored whether to permit or prohibit virtual asset activities. Subsequently, in December 2022, consultants were engaged to facilitate the establishment of this new regulatory landscape. The United Arab Emirates, and in particular, the individual emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, have led the way in the Middle East in progressing a workable framework for the digital asset industry. Oman’s proactive approach is following the example set by its regional peer.Shaping its virtual asset framework underlines its desire to foster innovation while ensuring the integrity of its financial landscape. Its latest effort in seeking public feedback is a positive development that should assist it in arriving at a progressive framework.

Param Labs Secures $7M investment to bolster Web3 gaming infrastructure

Param Labs, a modular gaming ecosystem, has announced the successful completion of a $7 million investment round, with Animoca Brands, a prominent crypto venture capital firm, leading the charge.Photo by Precondo CA on UnsplashOversubscribed funding roundJoining Hong Kong-headquartered Animoca Brands in this oversubscribed round were Delphi Ventures, Cypher Capital, P2 Ventures (formerly Polygon Ventures), Mechanism Capital, Merit Circle, TRGC Capital, Double Peak Group and MH Ventures. Anthony Anderson, CEO of Param Labs and Kiraverse, highlighted the significance of modular gaming ecosystems like Param in laying the groundwork for the next era of Web3 games. In an exchange with Cointelegraph, Anderson stated: “Unlike most Web3 studios that focus on developing single game titles, modular ecosystems offer a variety of products and components. This allows developers to build their own games from these modules and provides essential tools for other developers to utilize and integrate into their projects.” The timing of this funding round coincides with significant growth milestones for the Param Gaming Platform, which recently surpassed 300,000 daily active users. Additionally, the platform's X page boasts over 2.5 million followers, underscoring its growing popularity. Strategic investments from luminaries such as Yat Siu, co-founder of Animoca Labs, and Banks, founder of Face Clan, further underscore the potential of Param Labs, which is based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in realizing the vision of an open metaverse. In a statement published to the Animoca Brands website, Yat Siu expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating: "This collaboration aligns with our shared vision to redefine the gaming landscape, ensuring that gamers are the true owners of their digital assets." Focusing on infrastructureThis injection of capital is poised to address a critical deficiency in the realm of Web3 gaming: the lack of foundational infrastructure. Addressing precisely that challenge which is hindering mainstream adoption, Anderson emphasized the pivotal role of infrastructure: “Focusing on infrastructure is crucial, as it not only addresses the challenges in the games we’re developing but also has the potential to be applied to hundreds, if not thousands, of other experiences. This will significantly contribute to the adoption of blockchain gaming.” The UAE-based company is currently working on producing a number of products. These include its Game Launcher and Pixel to Poly, an offering that converts 2D images into 3D assets within games. While those are in the product pipeline, it has already launched Kiraverse, an online multiplayer game where the gameplay incorporates players competing to earn digital assets.  Param Labs has also sought to broaden the technical expertise available to it, with the hiring of Steve Young, a former head of consumer products at renowned American video gaming firm Activision Blizzard. Young has come in as a strategic advisor at Param. The company plans to launch its native token, PARAM, shortly to enable governance of the ecosystem that it is putting together.

HAQQ Network co-founder points to Indonesia’s crypto hub potential

Mohammed AlKaff AlHashmi, co-founder of the HAQQ Network, has expressed the view that Indonesia has considerable potential to establish itself as Asia’s largest crypto hub. AlHashmi made the comments in a discussion with Crypto.news. HAQQ Network claims to be a scalable proof-of-stake-based blockchain, capable of high throughput. The network is fully compatible and interoperable with Ethereum. The project also focuses on the development of a Sharia-compliant Web3.  While the project is headquartered in Niqa Al Dheeb in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Indonesia is also a significant market for the company, given that it has just received regulatory approval for the HAQQ Network’s native token from the Indonesia Financial Services Authority (OJK). Islamic Coin (ISLM) is the network’s native token. It is being offered as a Sharia compliant digital currency, with Sharia law being the Islamic legal system that governs the lives of millions of Muslims throughout the world.Photo by Nick Agus Arya on UnsplashGateway marketOffering his thoughts on the Indonesian crypto market, AlHashmi stated: “When we look at Indonesia as a market, I would say it is incomparable. It can be number one to be honest. Because I have seen statistics of growth happening in a very big volume. The volume of trade, transactions and users, I think Indonesia can be very soon one of the top 3 countries in the world.” Indonesia takes on added importance for the HAQQ Network project. The project’s co-founder sees the Southeast Asian nation as a gateway into a broader market given that it has the largest Muslim population in the world. He said that if his project is successful in Indonesia, then there will be no barrier to enter markets in other predominately Muslim nations. The entrepreneur believes that Indonesia is on the cusp of realizing its potential within the crypto sector. He said that Indonesia has a “competitive edge” when compared with other nations. Population size and rapid economic growth feed into that potential, with AlHashmi claiming that Indonesia is primed to become the largest crypto hub in Asia. Smooth regulatory processFrom a regulatory perspective, he also feels that Indonesia is outperforming other jurisdictions. The HAQQ Network project team experienced a smooth process in acquiring regulatory approval for ISLM recently. He believes that although the process was detailed, it was completed quicker than he would expect in other countries.  AlHashmi added that “regulations are flexible enough to enable project owners to do good business to protect the community as well.” Local regulator, the OJK, has expressed an interest in exploring the development of Sharia-compliant crypto assets. Earlier this month, Hasan Fawzi, OJK's executive head overseeing crypto assets supervision, told local media that the regulator is open to advancing Sharia-based cryptocurrencies.  Hasan stated: “Globally and regionally, this is a common practice. It is not unusual to create crypto assets that adhere to Sharia principles.” The OJK executive is particularly interested in tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs). He believes that if this proves to be successful, it could lead to further Sharia-complaint crypto products being launched. The OJK is currently testing tokenized RWAs within a sandbox environment.
