B2C2, a cryptocurrency liquidity provider catering to institutional clients and a subsidiary company of Japanese financial services conglomerate SBI Holdings, has solidified its foothold in the digital assets market by completing the acquisition of Woorton, a prominent European market maker and over-the-counter (OTC) transaction specialist.

Market expansion

In a press release published to its website on Thursday, UK-based B2C2 outlined further details relative to the acquisition. The move represents an effort by B2C2 to broaden its client base and expand within the European market, ahead of the forthcoming regulations under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA).

The acquisition opens doors for B2C2 to extend its services within the European Union (EU) jurisdiction. Additionally, it allows B2C2 to tap into growth opportunities beyond its existing strongholds in the United Kingdom, Asia-Pacific (APAC), and the United States.

Licensing access

One of the prime advantages of this acquisition is B2C2’s access to Woorton’s prestataires de services sur actifs numériques (PSAN) license, which is regulated by the Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF), the French financial regulatory authority. This license empowers B2C2 to operate seamlessly within the EU, positioning the company for a strategic advantage in the evolving regulatory landscape.

As the UK is no longer part of the EU, this acquisition makes for a much easier entry point for the company into the broader European market.

Founded in 2017, Woorton boasts an active clientele of nearly 250 entities engaged in trading 96 different cryptocurrencies. The company distinguishes itself by offering round-the-clock liquidity provision, ensuring uninterrupted trading opportunities for its clients.

Woorton’s engagement with regulatory bodies is a key highlight, and the firm is a co-founding member of the Association for the Development of Crypto-Assets (ADAN). Through ADAN, Woorton actively contributes to shaping regulatory frameworks governing digital assets in France, bridging the gap between the industry and policymakers.

Additionally, the company played a crucial role in establishing Paris Blockchain Week, an internationally recognized event that brings together thousands of attendees and speakers to discuss blockchain and digital asset trends.

Charlie Meraud, CEO of Woorton, expressed excitement about the acquisition, emphasizing the complementary strengths of the two firms. Meraud highlighted the enhanced liquidity pool and improved market presence that the combined platform would offer to customers, ultimately leading to a superior liquidity and trading experience.

B2C2’s CEO, Nicola White, described the acquisition as a significant milestone in the company’s growth journey. White expressed enthusiasm about the potential the acquisition unlocks for B2C2 and its EU-based clients, reaffirming the importance of regulatory standing and a robust client base.

London base

Established in 2015 and primarily owned by SBI, B2C2 operates from its main headquarters in the UK, with operational offices in the US and Japan. Its UK-registered company B2C2 Ltd serves as the parent entity within the B2C2 group of companies.

B2C2’s acquisition of Woorton not only enhances its presence within the European Union but also serves to demonstrate its intent in terms of regulatory compliance and industry leadership. This strategic move positions the company to navigate the evolving crypto market, likely leading to greater opportunities for its clients.

Indonesia Embraces XRP, ADA as Tradable Crypto Assets

Indonesia Embraces XRP, ADA as Tradable Crypto AssetsIn a significant move towards cryptocurrency acceptance, the Indonesian government has taken a momentous step by including a range of digital assets, including XRP and ADA, in a recently published regulatory document.Photo by Nick Agus Arya on Unsplash501 digital assetsThe document, published earlier this month, comprises an extensive list of 501 cryptocurrencies that are eligible for trading within the country. Unsurprisingly, BTC and ETH feature on the list. Other notable cryptocurrencies that have been listed include SOL, LTC, DOT, SAND, and UNI. This development is seen as a positive stride towards wider crypto adoption and holds the potential for broader use of all of these assets. In the case of XRP, it provides it with greater potential to become a viable means of payment within the region in the future, even though current regulation within Indonesia prohibits payments for goods and services in anything other than the rupiah.Defining tradable assetsThe regulatory document, officially titled “Supervisory Body Regulation Commodity Futures Trading Number 4 of 2023,” signifies an amendment to the Trade Controlling Agency Regulations Commodity Futures Number 11 of 2022. Its main objective is to identify the assets that can be traded in the physical market of crypto assets within Indonesia.Colin Wu, a prominent Chinese reporter, shared this significant development on Twitter, sparking interest and discussions within the crypto community. The news has been met with a mix of optimism and caution from Indonesian individuals. One Indonesian YouTuber expressed enthusiasm for the country’s XRP-friendly stance and voiced hope for XRP to eventually attain legal tender status. However, others, like Twitter user Pondok Indah, urged the government to focus on regulatory oversight and taxation rather than direct involvement in the crypto business. This development takes place in the broader context of Indonesia’s evolving crypto landscape. According to a 2022 research report titled “The 2022 Global Crypto Adoption Index: Emerging Markets Lead in Grassroots Adoption ‘’ by Chainalysis, Indonesia ranked at the top among the 20 countries analyzed in terms of peer-to-peer (P2P) exchange trade volume. The country has demonstrated its active participation in the crypto market, with Indodax, the largest Indonesian exchange, adding support for FLOKI, an up-and-coming cryptocurrency, back in April. That said, as we’ve seen in many other jurisdictions, the development of regulation and policy relative to digital assets has not been without its hiccups. Last month, the governor of Bali warned the foreign tourists that flock to the Indonesian island that there would be consequences for those that flouted Indonesian law and used crypto as a form of payment for goods and services.Indonesia’s recognition of the potential benefits of digital assets demonstrates a path forward for other nations to follow. Providing regulatory clarity with regard to digital assets bolsters investor confidence but also opens doors for innovation and financial inclusion. In taking this approach, the Southeast Asian country is setting the stage through which digital assets can contribute to economic growth and technological advancement.

Cake DeFi Co-Founder Launches Ordzaar Ordinals Marketplace

Cake DeFi Co-Founder Launches Ordzaar Ordinals MarketplaceU-Zyn Chua, Singaporean Co-Founder and CTO of Singapore-based Cake DeFi, has launched Ordzaar, a Bitcoin Ordinals marketplace. In a social media post on Friday, the marketplace described itself as “a decentralized & trustless marketplace for #Bitcoin Ordinals, bridging the gap between trustlessness and true decentralization.” The Ordinals protocol has been enabled due to the SegWit and Taproot upgrades to the bitcoin protocol. It’s a system for numbering satoshis, the smallest denomination of the Bitcoin cryptocurrency. The protocol assigns each satoshi with a serial number, using that number to track them across transactions.By taking this approach, each individual satoshi becomes unique, allowing additional data to be attached to them in a process called inscription. The project has hit the ground running, with its website online and a step by step guide released, instructing new users in how to buy and sell Ordinals on the marketplace.Releasing a press release to publicize the launch, the project pointed out that “the lack of a fully decentralized Ordinals marketplace [poses] a major challenge”, given a backdrop in which Bitcoin Ordinal inscriptions have surged in popularity over the course of recent weeks. Elaborating on that point, the team stated: “There is a growing need for a reliable and secure platform that allows buyers and sellers to transact in a decentralized manner, giving them complete control over their assets, this is where Ordzaar comes in.”Asia Ordinals marketplace firstOrdzaar represents the first ever Bitcoin Ordinals marketplace based within the Asian region. Alongside U-Zyn Chua, the team behind the project implicates three other seasoned crypto-natives with a wealth of experience in crypto, bitcoin, and blockchain. Cake DeFi colleague Naqib Noor assumes the role of Co-Founder and Development Lead. As well as being Co-Founder, Chua is the project’s Lead Researcher. In an effort to showcase the brand new marketplace, the Ordzaar team sponsored and participated in the Bitcoin Ordinals 2023 conference in Miami late last week, with Chua appearing as a speaker at the event. The Co-Founder told Blockhead that:“Ordinals have proven that Bitcoin is more than just a peer-to-peer payment system and has demonstrated a new, high-value use case for the longest-running cryptocurrency. As the industry continues to build and innovate, Ordinals have the potential to unlock even more value on the Bitcoin blockchain, and will lift the entire crypto ecosystem as a whole.”NFTs took on a life all of their own with a market surge, tripling in value to $250 million in 2020. While that largely Ethereum-based market has cooled somewhat since then, it nonetheless continues to broaden and establish itself. Chua believes that Bitcoin-centric Ordinals can take a large slice of that development. “Along with the explosive adoption seen in the traditional ETH NFT market, we expect to see a similar trajectory in the Ordinals space,” he explained. In a tweet published on Saturday, Crypto journalist and investment team member at Seoul-based crypto venture capital firm #Hashed, Joseph Young, referred to changing dynamics within the NFT space, with relative newcomers Blur and Tensor taking on OpenSea and Magic Eden. Not short on confidence, the Ordinals team responded, stating: “And Ordzaar will be dominating decentralized Ordinals and BRC20 trading.” The overarching crypto space continues its progression at pace, and it will be intriguing to see how Ordinals, together with new marketplaces like Ordzaar, perform as the industry trundles forward.Photo by Dmitry Demidko on Unsplash

Animoca Brands Remains Bullish on Blockchain Gaming

Animoca Brands Remains Bullish on Blockchain GamingBlockchain-based games have gained significant attention within the cryptocurrency space, witnessing remarkable growth and daily activity across various protocols despite challenging market conditions. Hong Kong-based Animoca Brands, the Web3 and metaverse company, recently pronounced its bullishness where blockchain gaming is concerned. In 2022 alone, Web3 gaming attracted approximately $4.5 billion in funding, as asset managers, investment funds, and venture capitalists sought to capitalize on the flourishing sector. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Yat Siu, Co-Founder of Animoca Brands, expressed the company’s renewed optimism in the blockchain gaming sector and provided an update on its eagerly anticipated metaverse fund, which made headlines in late 2022.Photo by julien Tromeur on UnsplashAnimoca’s metaverse fundThe metaverse fund, originally planned to have a budget of up to $2 billion in November 2022, aimed to invest in mid to late-stage startups focused on developing metaverse products and experiences. However, due to recent volatility affecting the cryptocurrency space, Animoca Brands scaled back its investment target to $1 billion in January 2023. Reports in March suggested a further reduction to $800 million. While awaiting the required license to launch the metaverse fund, Siu emphasized that Animoca Brands has been actively investing in early-stage startups through its venture arm, with additional investments directly from the company’s balance sheet. Currently, the company boasts a portfolio of over 450 companies.AAA blockchain games anticipatedDespite the challenges, Siu anticipates the release of several “AAA” blockchain games, in which Animoca Brands has made investments, by the end of 2023 or early 2024. Siu believes that the quality of titles backed by Animoca Brands, built on open protocol systems such as Ethereum and Polygon, will contribute to the long-term sustainability of the sector. He underlined the importance of these games being on-chain, enabling third parties to leverage the capabilities of blockchain technology and explore exciting possibilities.Siu also highlighted the significant role of scaling protocols like Polygon and technological advancements such as zero-knowledge proofs in boosting the development and quality of upcoming blockchain games. Immutable, a layer-2 platform, effectively reduced costs and improved transaction speeds for NFT generation in blockchain games. Choosing the right blockchain platform, especially Ethereum, is crucial for success in the industry. While fully decentralized games present challenges, Siu acknowledged that a hybrid on-chain and off-chain approach might be more suitable as the industry progresses towards true decentralization. Certain game features, such as provenance and skins, lend themselves well to on-chain implementation, while others may require a gradual transition.Integrating blockchain tech with existing gamingSiu emphasized the potential for integrating blockchain elements into the existing gaming culture worldwide. By designing interfaces that are familiar to gamers and gradually introducing crypto and Web3 experiences, gaming companies can facilitate the adoption of blockchain technology while promoting financial literacy among players. The Head of Animoca Ventures, an Animoca Brands sister company, recently explained that key Japanese games console makers are also showing an interest in blockchain gaming.Looking ahead, the year 2023 and beyond are critical for the blockchain gaming sector. The release of high-quality games, coupled with significant investments, will shape the long-term success of the industry. With its extensive portfolio and unwavering optimism, Animoca Brands remains dead set on driving innovation and pushing the boundaries of blockchain gaming.
