Web3 & Enterprise·June 07, 2023, 11:48 PM

Dubai-headquartered crypto spot and derivatives trading platform Bybit, the third most popular cryptocurrency exchange globally, has announced a new partnership with the American University of Sharjah (AUS) as part of its ongoing commitment to promote crypto adoption in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The collaboration was solidified through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in Sharjah, the UAE's third largest city. As a testament to this partnership, Bybit has contributed AED 1,000,000 ($272,000) to establish a scholarship fund, facilitating the academic and research endeavors of 20 students pursuing fintech and blockchain studies at AUS. Eligible students enrolled in computer science and computer engineering programs will be able to benefit from the Bybit Scholarship starting from the upcoming fall semester.

Hackathon sponsorship

In addition to the scholarship initiative, Bybit is dedicated to broader industry endeavors and will contribute an extra AED 100,000 ($27,200) to sponsor a hackathon for the UAE blockchain community. The inaugural AUS-Bybit Inter-College Hackathon is scheduled to take place during the 2023–2024 academic year at the AUS College of Engineering.

The UAE has recognized the significant role of cryptocurrencies in its trade activities, and the thriving crypto and blockchain industry in the country serves as a testament to the government’s visionary approach. Dubai alone is home to more than 772 crypto companies, solidifying the UAE’s position as a hub for digital asset innovation. Consequently, the demand for blockchain talent is expected to rise in the region.

Industry partnerships

Dr. Susan Mumm, Chancellor of AUS, emphasized the university’s commitment to excellence in education, attributing its reputation to strong industry partnerships that bridge the gap between academia and the corporate world. Through the collaboration with Bybit, AUS students will gain access to the technical knowledge necessary to stay abreast of the latest developments in the crypto and blockchain industry.

The establishment of the Bybit Scholarship further supports students’ education and skill enhancement. Dr. Mumm expressed the university’s goal of producing professionals and lifelong learners who can make a positive impact in a rapidly evolving world.

Ben Zhou, co-founder and CEO of Bybit, highlighted the pivotal role of younger generations in propelling the blockchain revolution forward. Zhou expressed his pleasure in establishing the Bybit Scholarship at AUS, enabling talented students to future-proof their knowledge and skills. He extended his gratitude to AUS for providing opportunities to raise awareness about cryptocurrencies and sharing first-hand industry insights with students from one of the most esteemed universities in the region. Zhou eagerly anticipated being inspired by future engineers, blockchain scientists, and Web3 startup founders.

Bybit, a prominent player in the crypto space, unveiled its Dubai headquarters in April, solidifying its commitment to the region and its aspiration to contribute to the growth of the digital asset ecosystem. In May the company gained outline approval to operate in Kazakhstan. Demonstrating further progress still, last month the firm confirmed that it was extending its service offering to include crypto lending.

OKX Burns $244M $OKB in Record Exchange Token Supply Cut

OKX Burns $244M $OKB in Record Exchange Token Supply CutSeychelles-headquartered OKX, the world’s second largest cryptocurrency exchange, has conducted its largest-ever burn of its exchange token, $OKB, according to on-chain data.Approximately 5.5 million OKB tokens, equivalent to around $244 million, were removed from circulation. This record-breaking burn represents a significant milestone for OKX, surpassing the previous burns conducted since the monthly program’s inception. The burn was valued at approximately $258 million when calculated based on a 90-day average price, as reported by OKX. Chinese reporter Colin Wu highlighted that this burn marked another significant milestone in terms of the value of OKB tokens burned.Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Wu wrote: “The OKX exchange carried out the 20th OKB repurchase and burning on June 8, with a total of about 5.5 million OKB, or about 244 million US dollars, which once again set a new record for the value of OKB burning. OKX previously stated that it will burn OKX according to the seasonal market and operating performance, but has not disclosed the specific rules.”Photo by Jens Mahnke on PexelsBuy-Back & Burn program$OKB is described by OKX as a “global utility token issued by the OKX Blockchain Foundation,” offering holders various benefits such as discounts and exclusive access. The global exchange initiated the first Buy-Back & Burn program in May 2019. Since then, it has burned a total of 64,042,314.70 tokens as part of that ongoing burning process. Despite this significant development, the price of OKB has remained relatively stable, experiencing a slight increase of 0.29% on OKX. At the time of publication, the token was trading at a unit price of $44.97.Exchange token concernExchange tokens have recently garnered attention following the United States Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) lawsuit against global crypto exchange Binance. The SEC has levied charges related to the sale of unregistered securities, resulting in a steep decline of nearly 15% in the value of Binance’s exchange token, BNB, over the past week. That scrutiny is likely to have followed the collapse of Bahamas-based cryptocurrency exchange FTX in November. At that time, it became apparent that the exchange was using its exchange token, $FTT, to prop up the business. FTX had issued $FTT tokens and used them as collateral, a dangerous act given that exchange tokens have no real-world asset backing and limited token utility. As the crypto market continues to face regulatory scrutiny and legal challenges, the burn of $OKB by OKX stands as a noteworthy event within the industry. The burn not only reduces the supply of $OKB tokens but also underscores OKX’s commitment to managing and enhancing the value of its exchange token. Market participants will undoubtedly monitor the implications of this burn and how it may influence OKB’s future performance in the evolving cryptocurrency landscape.Exchanges like OKX are likely to carefully manage the supply levels of exchange tokens, given market perceptions in relation to the extent of the utility of such tokens, the scrutiny of regulators, and the problems caused in over-extending supply in the case of other exchanges in the past.

KuCoin TH enters Thailand’s crypto market

Global crypto exchange platform KuCoin has announced the arrival of “KuCoin Thailand” (to be also known as “KuCoin TH”) in the Southeast Asian country. In a press release publicizing the development, the company outlined that the new platform has been formed following a rebranding of ERX, the first virtual currency exchange to be licensed and supervised by Thai regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).Photo by Bharath Mohan on UnsplashGlobal infrastructure enhancing service deliveryERX has rebranded to KuCoin Thailand, but the exchange will continue to be operated by ERX Company Ltd, while collaborating with KuCoin and benefiting from KuCoin’s global market presence and global exchange infrastructure. Commenting on what KuCoin brings to the partnership, ERX CEO Att Tongyai Asavanund stated: “With the global infrastructure and resources supporting us, we’re enhancing our ability to deliver localized solutions tailored for the Thai market. KuCoin Thailand reflects our continued mission — strengthened by strong technology and a broader global vision.” ERX Board Director Henry Chen said that the objective is “to build a leading digital asset platform in Thailand with global vision, institutional grade service and state-of-art technology.”Southeast Asian expansionFounded in China in 2017, although operating on a global basis, KuCoin continues to have stronger ties to Asia. Following the implementation of restrictions on crypto trading in China a few years ago, the company moved its headquarters to Singapore, subsequently opting to establish itself in the Seychelles. This latest development further strengthens KuCoin’s credentials within the Asian region. In a blog post, the company marked the event as a “key step forward” in its strategic expansion across Southeast Asia. Existing ERX users have already been migrated over to the new platform. The company has placed a notice on its website advising users to download the KuCoin TH app, which has been made available via Android and iOS. Last month ERX announced that it had received approval from the Thai SEC to activate its Crypto Exchange License. The company was first established in Thailand in 2019. It has been under the supervision of the local regulator since 2020.  The ERX platform was originally built out using AlphaPoint white-label software. It received a digital assets exchange license from the SEC in July 2020. ERX parent company, New York-based digital asset management firm Elevated Returns, has been working within the real-world asset (RWA) tokenization arena for some time. In 2018, the company was involved in a $18 million deal to tokenize the St. Regis Aspen Resort, a luxury hotel and resort located in Colorado, United States. Previously, KuCoin had remained unlicensed in Thailand. In recent times, the Thai authorities have made efforts to block unlicensed exchanges from engaging with investors in Thailand. Last month Thailand’s SEC filed a lawsuit against KuCoin competitor OKX for allegedly running an unlicensed exchange. KuCoin Thailand will compete with eight other licensed exchange businesses within the Thai market. These include WAAN Exchange, Gulf Binance, Thai Digital Assets Exchange, InnovestX Securities, GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics, Upbit Exchange, Bitkub Online and Orbix Trade.
