A financial breakdown

The Hong Kong-based Web3 firm published the interim financial report to its website. Breaking that down further, the company is holding $194 million in cash and stablecoin reserves. Additionally, $566 million is being held in liquid digital assets. This includes reserves of $SAND, the native token of the Ethereum-based Sandbox virtual metaverse.

Beyond this, Animoca holds $2.7 billion in a varied portfolio of digital asset reserves, linked to its majority owned Web3 subsidiaries and portfolio companies. The firm outlined that it intends to release additional financial updates in the near future. That will include an audited financial statement for 2020. Furthermore, a summary statement of business activity for 2022 will be released, together with similar business highlights pertaining to Q1, 2023.

Adjusting to changing market conditions

It’s likely that Animoca took the decision to release this data at this point to bolster confidence in the company, off the back of a number of announcements that may have led some in the industry to question the overall financial health of the company.

According to a report published in March by Reuters, Animoca Brands cut its target for its metaverse fund by 20% to $800 million. The scaling back was understood by many crypto sector commentators to be a reaction by the company due to changing market conditions within the crypto space. It was the second such adjustment the company made. In November 2022, the firm was working on the new fund, initially proposing a target of $2 billion. Once January came around, Animoca took the decision to scale that target back by half to $1 billion.

Subsequent to reports of the fund scale-back being published, Animoca Brands CEO Yat Siu reacted, telling one crypto media outlet that “the claim that the Animoca Capital fund target was ‘cut’ from $2 billion to $1 billion is not correct, because $1 billion has always been within the range declared.”

Playing down the news further, the company added: “There’s no doubt that the FTX and banking crises have had a serious impact on available venture capital, but fundraising for the Animoca Capital fund is in progress. When the raise is concluded, we will inform the market with the appropriate details, including the final size of this fund.”

Siu stated that as the source of that report was an unnamed source, it was difficult to figure out the agenda of that person in broadcasting that claim.

Animoca is perceived in the industry as a key player, particularly so when it comes to NFTs, blockchain-based gaming and the metaverse. The firm is classed as a Crypto Top 40 company by Forbes, while being a winner of Deloitte’s Technology Fast 50 award. Deloitte’s Technology Fast 50 program ranks fast growing companies based upon their percentage revenue growth over the course of three years.

Bullish files for IPO in the U.S.

Digital asset exchange business Bullish has filed confidentially for an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States. The Financial Times reported on June 11 that the IPO had been filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in recent weeks. Choosing to file the IPO confidentially will have enabled the firm to delay public disclosure, allowing it to progress with its preparation for the IPO and reveal financials closer to the point at which it goes public. Back in February, Bloomberg reported that the company was looking at the possibility of executing an IPO, with investment banking and financial services firm Jefferies understood to have been advising the firm. This latest report confirms that Jefferies will work as the lead underwriter in relation to the IPO deal.Photo by Markus Winkler on PexelsHong Kong tiesBullish is a subsidiary company of Block.one, a blockchain software company founded by Brendan Blumer and Dan Larimer, best known for having established the EOS.IO blockchain network. Both companies have strong ties with Hong Kong.  The Bullish exchange is licensed by the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). It has also obtained licensing from the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission (GFSC) and the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin).  The exchange business is jointly operated by corporate entities registered in Hong Kong and Gibraltar. The company maintains offices in Hong Kong, Gibraltar, Singapore, New York, London, Frankfurt and the Cayman Islands.  The business is also being backed by Hong Kong billionaire Richard Li and American entrepreneur Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal, Palantir Technologies and Founders Fund. Blumer, who is based in Hong Kong, founded Bullish in 2021 and currently serves as Bullish chairman. The company is understood to have in the region of 275 employees with Tom Farley leading it as CEO. Farley previously fulfilled the role of president at Intercontinental Exchange’s NYSE group. Positive climate for crypto IPOsAmid a more positive crypto climate in the United States, crypto-related IPOs appear to be back in favor. Leading stablecoin issuer Circle executed an IPO earlier this month with the offering being 25x oversubscribed. Following the success of the Circle IPO, BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes asserted on X that it would lead to a plethora of crypto-related IPOs over the next few years. He likened that anticipated wave of IPOs to the flurry of initial coin offerings (ICOs) that occurred back in 2017. Earlier this month American crypto exchange platform Gemini confidentially filed for an IPO in the U.S. A Bloomberg report published in March suggested that rival exchange business Kraken is planning an IPO for Q1 2026.  There has been some speculation that Ripple, the American technology company that developed and supports XRP and the XRP Ledger (XRPL), may be a prime candidate for an IPO. Taking to the X social media platform, “Pentoshi,” a pseudonymous crypto market analyst with over 860,000 followers on X, said that a Ripple IPO “feels only logical.” The analyst added that if the company executed an IPO, it would likely weigh in at “some insanely stupid valuation.”

Jio launches JioCoin reward token

Indian multinational technology firm Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of India’s largest private sector company, Reliance Industries, has launched JioCoin, a rewards-based token, on the Polygon blockchain. While Jio Platforms has yet to make an official announcement related to JioCoin, Kashif Raza, the founder of Indian crypto education startup Bitinning, took to the X social media platform on Jan. 16 to highlight his discovery that JioCoin had been launched and that the tokens could be accumulated via the JioCoin Wallet, a Web3 wallet. Polygon Labs partnershipLast week, it emerged that Jio Platforms had entered into a partnership with Polygon blockchain developer Polygon Labs. Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal told Cointelegraph that Polygon Labs intends to support Jio to enable blockchain integration across a spectrum of Jio applications. In a follow-up post, Raza provided a more detailed account of the offering. The crypto educator explained that the token “is a mechanism to reward internet users for surfing the internet on the JioSphere browser.”Photo by GuerrillaBuzz on UnsplashUse case speculationOn that basis, it’s likely that the emergence of JioCoin is the first demonstration of one of the outcomes of that collaboration.  In the absence of an official announcement and a specific clarification of the intended use case for JioCoin, Raza speculated that its likely use case will be to act as a currency within the Jio network. He explained that within Jio’s sphere, thousands of companies are interacting with each other. Raza speculated that in the future, users would be able to use JioCoin to pay for gas at gas stations or renew mobile phone services. Jio’s parent company operates a network of gas stations in partnership with BP. He believes that JioCoin could potentially give Jio an edge in competing with other internet browser providers like Google, Brave and Microsoft, while suggesting that Reliance Industries group companies could run one of the most significant rewards programs in the world via JioCoin. Polygon adoptionIndian venture capitalist and blockchain enthusiast Aditya Singh suggested that the move will help Polygon from an awareness and adoption perspective. However, he outlined that while this is a big deal, it’s not the first time that Polygon has struck big-name partnerships, having done so in the past with Meta, Disney, Nike, Adidas, Adobe, Reddit and others. Raza believes the partnership provides significant validation for Polygon, given Jio's reputation. He suggested that, as a consequence, other large Indian corporations may choose to launch an ecosystem coin on the Polygon blockchain. If JioCoin fulfills its potential and turns out to be a success, the Polygon network will see a significant rise in the overall number of transactions processed. In a similar vein, Jio could bring a substantial user base to Polygon.  While Singh and Raza see JioCoin as a largely positive development, its introduction hasn’t occurred without criticism. Author and crypto analyst Sunil Aggarwal took to social media to warn the community to investigate the token further before automatically assuming it to be a huge milestone for Polygon and crypto generally. He cited concerns related to the transparency and integrity of the token offering.

BlackRock Investment Marks its Return to India

BlackRock Investment Marks its Return to IndiaBlackRock, the world’s largest money manager with $9.4 trillion in assets under management, has made a significant move by joining forces with the financial services arm of Indian tycoon Mukesh Ambani. This strategic partnership aims to tap into India’s rapidly growing asset management market and marks BlackRock’s return to the country following a six-year absence. The collaboration between BlackRock and Jio Financial Services, a company built by Reliance Industries Limited, will establish a 50–50 joint venture called Jio BlackRock. BlackRock announced the collaboration via a statement published to its website on Wednesday.Photo by Naveed Ahmed on Unsplash$300 million investmentBoth companies plan to invest up to $150 million each in this venture. Larry Fink, BlackRock’s Chairman and CEO, articulated his satisfaction regarding the partnership in a LinkedIn post, emphasizing the significance of expanding BlackRock’s presence in India.Mukesh Ambani, the Founder and Chairman of Reliance Industries, is India’s richest man with a net worth believed to be in the region of $90.6 billion. The conglomerate is the country’s largest listed company by market share. Collaborating with BlackRock will likely strengthen its position in the financial services sector. The joint venture aims to leverage BlackRock’s expertise in investment and risk management, combined with Jio Financial Services’ technological capabilities and deep market knowledge. The objective will be to provide “tech-enabled access to affordable, innovative investment solutions” for Indian investors. With rising affluence, favorable demographics, and the ongoing digital transformation across industries in India, the market is undergoing a significant shift.Potential implications for cryptoThis move comes shortly after Jio Financial Services was spun off from its parent company, Reliance Industries. The digital-first service is focused on delivering innovative investment solutions to cater to the growing needs of Indian investors. While there’s absolutely no mention of crypto relative to this announcement, it may still have implications for crypto in India. BlackRock has progressed from taking a dim view of Bitcoin and crypto to now turning towards this new asset class. It recently filed an application to launch a bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the United States. That move is considered highly significant by most market commentators.Given that Jio Financial takes a digital-first approach and that the idea of the partnership is to bring the latest financial products to retail customers in India, there’s potential for this new entity to bring digital asset-related products to that market.Indian market re-entryBlackRock’s re-entry into India’s asset management industry is not the first attempt by the US investment management firm. In 2018, BlackRock exited the Indian market by selling its 40% stake in an asset management venture to partner DSP Group, but the company recognizes the enormous potential that India presents.Over the past five years, assets under management of Indian mutual funds have doubled, reaching 44.39 trillion rupees ($542 billion) by June this year. The exponential growth in this sector highlights the immense opportunities India offers to global asset managers like BlackRock. While the launch of the joint venture is subject to closing conditions and regulatory approvals, the collaboration between BlackRock and Jio Financial Services appears to be poised to unlock the power of investing for millions of people in India.
