Shapella Upgrade to Have limited Impact on ETH’s Selling Pressure

Markets·April 13, 2023, 6:06 AM

The Shapella upgrade on the Ethereum network scheduled to take place on Wednesday will only have a limited impact on the selling pressure on ETH, according to a report by the research center at Korean cryptocurrency exchange Korbit.

Shapella upgrade

One of the key features of the Shapella upgrade is to allow withdrawal of staked ETH. This upgrade follows September’s Merge upgrade that switched the Ethereum network’s consensus algorithm from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake, significantly reducing electricity consumption.

Impact on selling pressure

To predict the impact of the Shapella upgrade on the selling pressure on ETH, the analysts at Korbit Research calculated the amount of time it takes for all the ETH staked as of March 22 to be withdrawn. They believe this calculation is relevant because withdrawals of staked ETH could trigger bulk sales, potentially imposing a greater selling pressure on ETH.

According to the findings, the daily sell volume for the first three days is expected to be 300,700 ETH, 0.254% of the circulating supply. This volume will gradually decrease to 43,000 ETH for the next six months and to 29,000 ETH for the following six months, each corresponding to 0.035% and 0.024% of the circulating supply, respectively.

All in all, bulk selling of ETH is not likely, considering it will take about a year and five months for all the staked ETH to be withdrawn and that the amount of withdrawable ETH will stay relatively low for each period. Furthermore, since this analysis assumes an extreme case, the market will be able to effectively handle the volume over the six month to 18 month period.

4 other reasons

In addition, Korbit Research outlined four other aspects that limit the selling pressure on ETH.

Firstly, there is some concern that the selling volume of ETH may increase due to unstaking resulting from the cessation of staking services at American crypto exchange Kraken. However, a decrease in the number of validators on the Ethereum network will raise the base reward. This may prompt those who unstaked ETH to stake them on other platforms, rather than selling them.

Second, ETH locked up at liquidity staking protocols such as Lido Finance and Rocket Pool provide liquidity for representations of staked ETH. These platforms allow users to stake fewer than 32 ETH for rewards. According to a February Binance Research report, 57.7% of ETH stakers enjoy liquidity and rewards. Therefore, there may be a limited impetus to divest of staked ETH.

Third, since only 41.1% of ETH stakers are seeing profits as of the time of writing the report, the remaining stakers would have to risk losses when withdrawing ETH. This suggests that those not yet seeing profits are more likely to keep ETH staked. Furthermore, Dune Analytics data shows that most of the ETH stakers with gains staked ETH when its price was relatively low, which indicates that they participated in staking in early days. Shivam Sharma, the author of the aforementioned Binance report, states that these ETH stakers are likely “some of the strongest Ethereum believers.”

Lastly, despite the Shapella upgrade, ETH withdrawals at different staking pools may not be initiated immediately. This could limit the circulation of withdrawable ETH, which in turn would hinder the selling pressure on ETH.

Macroeconomic factors

The Korbit researchers concluded their paper with a note that the selling pressure on ETH will be more influenced by macroeconomic factors than technical factors. They added that a possible downturn in the overall economy and corrections in risky asset markets might lead investors to sell ETH.

Thailand approves crypto income tax exemption

In a move aimed at boosting the Web3 sector, the adoption of investment tokens and the enhancement of startup financing, the Thai government recently approved a tax break for individuals holding such tokens.Photo by Nataliya Vaitkevich on PexelsIncentivizing crypto-based fundraisingThe decision, reported by local media as having been made on March 12, signifies a significant step towards incentivizing the use of investment tokens for fundraising purposes. Under the new regulations, capital gains derived from holding investment tokens will be exempt from personal income tax calculations. This exemption applies even if a 15% withholding tax had previously been deducted. The endorsement of this tax break by Thailand's cabinet underscores the government's interest in fostering economic growth and enhancing investment opportunities in the region. Kulaya Tantitemit, Director-General of Thailand's Revenue Department, emphasized the strategic importance of these tax measures, which have been made retrospectively effective from Jan. 1. The initiative is expected to stimulate fundraising activities through investment tokens, injecting vitality into the economy and paving the way for increased investment and job creation. However, it's worth noting that the tax break will only apply to individuals who refrain from seeking full or partial refunds of the deducted tax or claiming a deducted tax credit. Additionally, the government has extended tax incentives to investment token issuers, waiving corporate income tax as announced on March 7.Last month, the Thai Finance Ministry announced the exemption of digital asset trading activity from value-added tax (VAT). The VAT exemption is similarly designed to encourage the use of digital assets as an alternative fundraising mechanism. Potential $3.7B boostDeputy Government Spokesman Rachada Dhnadirek highlighted the significance of this move in diversifying fundraising avenues for firms, complementing traditional methods. The government anticipates that investment tokens will contribute approximately $3.7 billion to the economy over the next two years. While the recent tax break signals a positive step towards fostering a crypto-friendly environment in Thailand, the country's approach to crypto taxation has faced scrutiny from industry stakeholders in the past. Efforts by the Thai Revenue Department to tighten oversight and impose taxes on cryptocurrency trading were met with resistance from industry players concerned about the potential stifling effect on the sector's growth. In January 2022, the government's proposal to impose a 15% capital gains tax on crypto traders drew significant public backlash, leading to its suspension on Feb. 1 of the same year. Despite these challenges, Thailand has demonstrated a willingness to adapt its regulatory framework to accommodate the burgeoning crypto industry. Measures such as exempting traders on authorized exchanges from a 7% value-added tax (VAT) on crypto transactions, announced on March 8, 2022, underscore the government's efforts to create a conducive environment for crypto-related activities. The political backdrop in Thailand more recently is likely to be aiding the country in taking a more progressive stance where crypto is concerned. Last year, the country elected Srettha Thavisin as Prime Minister. In a prior role as CEO of real estate developer Sansiri, Thavisin oversaw the company’s involvement in digital asset-related activities. In January, Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) removed the investment ceiling imposed on retail investors relative to participation in initial coin offerings (ICOs).

Crypto.com adds AED support in the UAE

Crypto.com, the global crypto exchange platform headquartered in Singapore, has recently added an “AED Fiat Wallet,” allowing its users based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to deposit and withdraw UAE dirhams to and from their Crypto.com accounts. In a statement published on its website on Dec. 11, the firm outlined details of the added feature. So as to be able to access the AED Fiat Wallet, UAE residents will need to be registered on the platform with a UAE phone number. Once users configure platform settings to reflect the AED as their default currency, the platform displays the relevant deposit information to enable users to deposit the currency to their accounts. The minimum deposit has been set at 10 AED per transaction with a maximum of four million AED per day.Photo by Katerina Kerdi on UnsplashFacilitated by Standard CharteredCrypto.com claimed on X that the new feature could be set up easily, enabling fast and simple transfers. Additionally, the company is not charging users a deposit fee for AED deposits. Tarik Erk, Crypto.com’s General Manager for Middle East & Africa, explained that a collaboration with British multinational bank Standard Chartered had enabled the offering. Erk stated: “This new wallet launch is made possible through our global banking partnership with Standard Chartered which we announced in August, alongside the ongoing and valued support of VARA [Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority], which enables us to continue our expansion across the UAE. We’re extremely focused on offering our customers a seamless world-class experience and, at its very core, that includes ease of deposits and withdrawals – enabling our customers to interact with our products and services with as much flexibility as possible.” Crypto.com launched its service in the UAE in August, and at the time, it recognized the significance of its partnership with Standard Chartered. In September Standard Chartered announced the launch of crypto custody services in the UAE in collaboration with Brevan Howard Digital. The service was licensed by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA).  In November of last year, Crypto.com was awarded a license by VARA to provide virtual asset services. Last week, it emerged that the company had acquired Orion Principals Limited, an Abu Dhabi-based securities firm. The brokerage firm is licensed by the local regulator within the Abu Dhabi Global Market, an economic free zone and financial center. Crypto.com said that the acquisition will lead to the company rolling out new services to eligible platform users, including securities, options, futures and contracts for difference. Deutsche Bank partnershipHaving forged a partnership with TradFi banking giant Standard Chartered in the Middle East, Crypto.com announced a similar partnership with another TradFi giant, Deutsche Bank, last week. The collaboration will see Deutsche Bank provide the company with banking support and corporate banking services within its home base of Singapore, as well as in Australia and Hong Kong. Back in June, Deutsche Bank partnered with another crypto exchange business, Bitpanda, to assist it in offering real-time inbound and outbound payments on its platform.
