KDAC, backed by Shinhan Bank, has been providing virtual asset custody services to businesses seeking safe asset management.

Collaboration plans between Fobl and KDAC

With the partnership, the two sides will store a portion of Fobl customers’ assets in custody, build a systematic process for custody of projects’ virtual assets and their pre-disclosures, and seek out new business opportunities in the Korean security token market.

Fobl’s potential transformation to fiat exchange

Previously, it was reported that Fobl is set to face a comprehensive inspection next week from the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) under the Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC).

This move from the FIU suggests that Fobl may soon become a fiat crypto exchange in the near future, as the financial regulator has announced that it will first inspect non-fiat exchanges that are preparing to allow fiat trading.

Japan’s Blockchain Group Requests Crypto Tax Revision for Web3 Adoption

Japan’s Blockchain Group Requests Crypto Tax Revision for Web3 AdoptionThe Japan Blockchain Association (JBA) has submitted a request to the Japanese government to reform the current cryptocurrency tax system, as it believes the existing framework hampers the growth of the Web 3 industry and discourages public engagement with cryptocurrencies. The association believes the tax revision would help position Japan as a leading country in the Web3 industry and boost the nation’s economy through these changes.Photo by Su San Lee on UnsplashGreater tax exemptionLast month, the Japanese National Tax Agency announced that companies would no longer be taxed on unrealized gains from cryptocurrencies they hold, provided they are the issuers of those tokens. While this represents a positive step, the JBA considers it insufficient in fostering Web3 growth. In light of this, the blockchain group urges the government to extend this exemption to also cover holdings of tokens issued by third parties.Separate taxationAdditionally, the JBA proposes a shift in the tax treatment of personal cryptocurrency transactions. It advocates for a separate taxation approach with a fixed tax rate of 20% for individual transactions, including crypto derivatives. This modification is seen as a way to adapt to the increasing prevalence of crypto asset transactions in the emerging Web3 era.Crypto-to-crypto trading tax abolitionUnder the current system, individuals trading crypto assets for other crypto assets are subject to income tax on the profits earned from each transaction. However, with the increasing variety of crypto assets and the growing prominence of crypto asset transactions in the emerging Web3 era, the JBA is advocating for the abolition of income tax on transactions between cryptocurrencies. The complexities involved in taxing such transactions within the evolving Web3 landscape have prompted the group to propose a reevaluation of the taxation approach, seeking a more favorable environment to foster the growth of the crypto industry.Japan has demonstrated its proactive approach in promoting and embracing the Web3 industry. At the annual Japanese Web3 conference, WebX, held in Tokyo last week, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida delivered a video address to mention Web3 as part of “the new form of capitalism,” acknowledging its capacity to stimulate economic growth and tackle societal challenges. Minister Kishida highlighted the Japanese government’s dedication to creating a supportive and conducive environment for the advancement of Web3 projects.

Hot Wallet Exploit Results in $23M Bitrue Loss

Hot Wallet Exploit Results in $23M Bitrue LossBitrue, a Singapore-based crypto exchange, has fallen prey to a $23 million hack due to a hot wallet exploit. The exchange has been forced to suspend all withdrawals until April 18, to provide an opportunity to conduct a thorough security review.©Pexels/Karolina GrabowskaHot wallet vulnerabilityHot wallets are used by exchanges to store small amounts of cryptocurrencies for easy access. These wallets are connected to the internet and are therefore more vulnerable to attacks compared to cold wallets, which are stored offline. In the case of Bitrue, hackers were able to exploit the hot wallet and steal cryptocurrencies worth $23 million. In a series of Twitter posts, the exchange outlined that the exploit occurred at 07:18 (UTC) on Friday. “We were able to address the matter quickly and prevented the further exploit of funds”, it went on to state. The stolen digital assets include ETH, QNT, GALA, SHIB, HOT and MATIC. Bitrue outlined that the hot wallet funds account for only 5% of overall funds and that the rest of its wallets remain secure and have not been compromised.Blockchain security firm PeckShield outlined how the funds were swapped and drained. A wallet it has labeled as “Bitrue drainer” swapped 173,000 QNT, 22.55 billion SHIB tokens, 46.4 million GALA and 310,000 MATIC for 8,540 ETH. The ether is now being held within the following address:0x1819EDe3B8411EbC613F3603813Bf42aE09bA5A5Reimbursing usersIn response to the hack, Bitrue has promised to reimburse all affected users. However, the process could take some time. The incident underscores the importance of taking precautions when storing cryptocurrencies on exchanges. Users should only keep a minimal amount of cryptocurrencies on an exchange and should not store more than they can afford to lose. Ongoing exploits, hacks and frauds exemplify the need for users to only use reputable platforms with a proven track record of security.Doubling down on securityBitrue has promised to improve its security measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The exchange’s response to the hack has been lauded by many in the cryptocurrency community, who have praised the company’s transparency and commitment to reimbursing affected users. The cryptocurrency community has been vocal in its criticism of exchanges that fail to prioritize security. The Bitrue hack is just the latest in a series of incidents that have highlighted the importance of maintaining security in the world of cryptocurrency. It’s not the first security breach that the exchange has encountered. In 2019 Bitrue suffered a $4.7 million loss, with quantities of both XRP and Cardano (ADA) having been stolen. On that occasion, the exchange released tracking details relative to the stolen funds. Thanks to collaboration with Huobi, Bittrex and ChangeNOW, the funds and associated accounts were frozen.According to data from CoinGecko, Bitrue trades an average of $1 billion in digital assets daily, with bitcoin and ether trading pairs accounting for a large proportion of that trading volume. The Bitrue hack has been a wake-up call for the cryptocurrency community and serves as a reminder of the ongoing risks associated with storing cryptocurrencies on exchanges.
