Combining zero knowledge and optimistic rollups

The collaboration, unveiled on Monday, signals a significant stride toward cultivating a novel, value-driven decentralized application (dApp) ecosystem. Morph, formerly known as Morphism, has garnered attention for its unique use of roll-up technology. By seamlessly blending optimistic and zero-knowledge (ZK) roll-ups, Morph aims to revolutionize scalability, reduce cost barriers, expedite dispute resolutions and ensure secure and adaptable transactions.

The project’s modular framework allows individual components of the ecosystem to evolve independently, staying abreast of rapid innovations in consumer applications.

Combating MEV

A distinctive feature of Morph’s design is the Decentralized Sequencer Network, a mechanism that ensures swift and cost-effective Layer 2 transactions. This challenges the dominance of maximal extractable value (MEV) and eradicates central points of control. MEV involves the maximum amount of value that can be extracted from a block on a blockchain network. It may be manipulated through the ordering and sequencing of transactions on the chain.

Technological innovation is not the sole objective of the Morph development team. Their ambition extends to creating a space where dApps seamlessly integrate into users’ daily lives, delivering tangible value. This consumer-centric approach prioritizes user experience through easy onboarding processes and intuitive interfaces. The network is attractive to developers due to lower cost barriers and accelerated dispute resolution.

Gracy Chen, Managing Director of Bitget, underscored the significance of the collaboration, praising Morph’s exceptional team, multicultural approach and strategic capabilities. Chen notes that Morph’s emphasis on a decentralized and consumer-centric approach aligns seamlessly with Bitget’s vision. This partnership, she believes, has the potential to transform the blockchain space, making the technology more accessible for everyday use and unlocking widespread consumer adoption.

Cecilia Hsueh, Co-Founder and CEO of Morph, expressed gratitude for Bitget’s support, emphasizing that the recent capital infusion underscores confidence in Morph’s unique value proposition, setting the stage for an upcoming seed funding round. The strategic alliance with Bitget provides Morph with a robust platform for growth, tapping into Bitget’s expansive user base of 20 million exchange users and 12 million Bitget Wallet users. Notably, Morph had previously entered into a strategic alliance with Foresight Ventures, a crypto fund based in Singapore.

Looking ahead, Morph is gearing up for significant milestones as it develops further. The project plans to intensify the refinement of its technical framework and broader ecosystem in the coming months. Notably, Morph is slated to launch its public testnet in January 2024, followed by the beta mainnet of its Optimistic zkEVM, which is scheduled for Q2 2024.

As Bitget continues to forge ties with up-and-coming Web3 entities, this collaboration with Morph has the potential to propel the project towards its strategic goals but also sets the stage for a transformative shift in the landscape of Layer 2 solutions.

Bitdeer Poised to Go Public Despite Delays

Bitcoin mining company Bitdeer Technologies Group is finally set to go public on the Nasdaq this Friday after a series of delays. The Singapore-based firm, which offers cloud mining services, has been in a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) merger process with Blue Safari Group. Drawn-out merger processBlue Safari Group filed for three extensions within six months last year, the last extension being a year long. The deal was originally expected to close in November 2021. The stopping block for the latest extension was insufficient time to get shareholder approval. However, Bitdeer Technologies Group revealed in a statement that shareholder approval has now been filed with the SEC.The merger was finally approved at an extraordinary general meeting of Blue Safari’s shareholders on April 11. The results of the vote will be included in a current report on Form 8-K to be filed by Blue Safari with the SEC. The deal is expected to close on April 13, 2023. Upon closing, Bitdeer Technologies Group will remain as the combined company, and its shares will begin trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “BTDR” on April 14.Bitdeer CEO Linghui Kong said, “Today marks a significant milestone for Bitdeer, leaving us poised to list on the Nasdaq and equipped to seize the growth opportunities ahead of us. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved so far and look forward to embarking on the next chapter of our journey.” The firm operates six mining data centers globally, with an aggregate electricity capacity of 775MW at the end of 2022. Surviving crypto winterBitdeer Technologies Group, backed by Bitmain founder Jihan Wu, offers cloud mining services, and is participating in a market that has been impacted by market volatility. However, miners that have survived are doubling down on expansion efforts. Yesterday, for example, the U.S. mining firm CleanSpark announced the purchase of 45,000 new mining machines for $144.9 million.Bitdeer will be part of a growing list of Bitcoin mining firms listed on Nasdaq, joining the likes of Riot Blockchain, Marathon Digital, and Canaan. Green miningRecently, the cryptocurrency mining industry has witnessed significant growth in green mining efforts. Terawulf, a US-based company, recently announced that its nuclear-powered mining facility, Nautilus, will come online soon. When fully operational, Nautilus is expected to have a hash rate of 1.6 exahashes per second (EH/s). The facility will run on nuclear power, which will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the mining operations. The energy-use of crypto mining has been coming under scrutiny relative to its carbon footprint and the demands it places on the power grid. In what many in the crypto space have called a “hit piece” targeting mining, the New York Times took aim at the industry on Monday. Bitdeer took to Twitter to call out false claims made by the publication relative to its use of energy during a 2021 winter storm.Bitdeer’s journey to becoming a publicly-traded company has been fraught with delays, but with shareholder approval in place, the company is ready to enter the public markets.

SynFutures launches V3 on Blast’s optimistic rollup network

SynFutures, the Singapore-headquartered decentralized derivatives exchange specializing in crypto perpetual futures trading, has taken its V3 from public testnet through to mainnet launch on the Blast layer two network. Bringing permissionless perps to BlastTaking to Medium on March 1, the company outlined that “we’ve officially brought permissionless perps to Blast.” With the launch, the project is demonstrating iterative progression. Back in October of last year, the company outlined that it had launched V3 on public testnet, while also announcing details of a $22 million Series B funding round at that time. SynFutures' decision to roll out V3 on the Blast mainnet aligns with the layer two network's rapid ascent in the crypto space. Blast itself launched on Feb. 29 and in the process the network unlocked around $2.3 billion in staked crypto which had remained locked up until that point. The optimistic rollup-based network allows transactions to be executed off-chain, all the while leveraging the security provided by the Ethereum blockchain network. Blast has managed to garner significant value on-chain due to the 5% annual yield it offers users on ether and stablecoins that network participants accrue from staked ETH.Photo by Alina Grubnyak on UnsplashPoints rewards programAlongside the V3 launch, SynFutures has introduced a points rewards program, christened Oyster Odyssey. This initiative aims to incentivize user engagement on the platform, with V3 users set to qualify for the upcoming Blast airdrop as well. "Interacting with SynFutures can qualify users for Oyster Odyssey points as well as Blast points," Rachel Lin, co-founder and CEO of SynFutures, disclosed to The Block. Lin added:"We're also committed to giving 100% of our Blast developer airdrop back to users, so they'll enjoy plenty of benefits." Gearing up for native token launchIt also appears that SynFutures is gearing up for the launch of its native token. In its blog post, the firm suggested that it was pleased to reveal that it is “exploring the path to a token.” The company promises that launch details and an associated timeline will be disclosed in the not-too-distant future. Following V3 public testnet launch last year, the project explored various blockchain options, including Polygon and zkSync Era, before ultimately settling on Blast. While the team remains committed to a multi-chain expansion for V3, with future deployments under consideration, Lin has suggested that the immediate focus lies in driving adoption and volume on Blast. While V2 of the platform still operates on the Polygon proof-of-stake chain, support for it is gradually phasing out as SynFutures prioritizes the V3 rollout. Meanwhile, V1 has already been phased out, with both iterations collectively processing over $23 billion in cumulative trading volume to date. SynFutures' journey thus far has been supported by substantial funding, with approximately $38 million raised to date. Notable backers include Pantera Capital, HashKey Capital and SIG DT Investments, a unit of the Susquehanna International Group, among others.

Crypto emerges as topic in Indonesian election campaign

Crypto emerges as topic in Indonesian election campaignAs Indonesia gears up for its upcoming presidential election, the country’s crypto market has become a focal point for political discourse. Gibran Rakabuming Raka, a vice presidential candidate and the eldest son of President Joko Widodo, recently unveiled his plans to foster expertise in blockchain and crypto within the Southeast Asian nation.Chosen as the running mate for presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, the 36-year-old politician aims to elevate tech education in Indonesia, opening avenues for the younger generation, particularly in the realm of digital assets. According to a report by Indonesian online news portal detikNews, while speaking at a political gathering on Dec. 10, Gibran asserted:“We are preparing blockchain experts, we are preparing cyber security experts, we are preparing crypto experts.”Photo by Nick Agus Arya on UnsplashCrypto potentialIndonesia has emerged as being ahead of the curve in terms of crypto adoption, ranking seventh on Chainalysis’ 2023 global crypto adoption index. With an estimated 18 million crypto investors, the country boasts a robust industry association that also functions as a self-regulatory body.Local news media reported in October that the Southeast Asian country has seen a 10.1% year-on-year increase in the number of crypto investors. At the time, Tirta Karma Senjaya, Head of the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency, said, "Growth in the number of crypto investors in Indonesia continues to increase, but investors are still looking for the right time to buy crypto.”Private sector entities have also identified the raw potential. In the same month, Web3 consulting firm Tiger Research, in partnership with South Korean crypto data platform Xangle, produced a report which identified significant potential for the development of Indonesia’s Web3 market. There are over 30 crypto exchanges operating in the country, acting as the primary channel through which growth in crypto is propelled in Indonesia.Capitalizing on crypto interestThe government, under President Widodo, has actively sought to capitalize on this crypto enthusiasm, going as far as establishing a local “stock market” dedicated to crypto assets.Gibran’s proactive stance on crypto education aligns with his broader vision of positioning Indonesia at the forefront of the global digital revolution. The country’s rapidly growing tech landscape and crypto adoption make it an opportune space for fostering expertise in these cutting-edge technologies. As the presidential election approaches, Gibran’s commitment to cultivating a pool of crypto experts underscores the potential influence of the crypto industry in shaping Indonesia’s economic future. An international topicCrypto is increasingly becoming an important topic in elections globally. In the United States, many of the presidential candidates, particularly within the Republican Party, have publicly expressed their interest in crypto and blockchain. Yesterday, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse took to the X social media platform on the subject, stating:”Team @Ripple is putting a stake in the ground, leading the charge with other industry leaders to support pro-innovation and pro-crypto candidates in the 2024 US election cycle. The US cannot afford to continue taking a back seat on the global stage.“With Indonesia’s election frontrunners, Prabowo and Gibran, expressing interest in the sector, it remains to be seen how this focus on crypto will resonate in the upcoming political debate on Feb. 4.
