OKX and KuCoin lead $9M investment into UXLINK

Web3 & Enterprise·March 14, 2024, 1:28 AM

UXLINK, a Web3 social network headquartered in Singapore, has announced a successful funding round raising $9 million, supported by a mix of private crypto and publicly listed companies including OKX and KuCoin.

UXLINK announced details of the funding round in a social media post published to X on March 13. The startup, known for its innovative approach to social networking merging with transactions, has seen its user base grow to 3.5 million users. Among the investors contributing to this round are OKX Ventures, Web3Port Foundation, Cypher Capital, KuCoin Ventures, Gate Labs and Matrixport Ventures. ZhenFund, 7UPDAO, Signum Capital, ECV and GGV Capital were also participants.

In a blog post Dora Yue, Founder of OKX Ventures, expressed enthusiasm about UXLINK's concept, stating:

"This innovative concept merges social networking and transactions, creating a robust ecosystem where people can fully leverage their digital assets."

Acquaintance-based social networking

Yue described UXLINK as a game-changer in the field of Web3 social infrastructure. The project differentiates itself by relying on acquaintance social networking. Other Web3 social protocols such as Farcaster, Nostr, Cyberconnect and Lens Protocol are structured around one way follower relationships between key opinion leaders (KOLs) and followers.

By contrast UXLINK takes a different approach, building a social network by placing emphasis on the existing social relationships of users with acquaintances. The idea is that real-life acquaintances are established through trust and implicate a much deeper personal connection by comparison with opinion leaders and followers.

Speaking to that unique approach, pseudonymous crypto trader and investor Bull Flash stated on X on March 13:

“Forget one-sided connections! UXLINK focuses on REAL-WORLD social interactions. Users can connect with each other AND with dApps in real-time through innovative Groups – a game-changer for web3. UXLINK is more than just a platform – it's a MOVEMENT.”

Potential for further funding

While the exact valuation post-funding remains undisclosed, UXLINK indicated a potential for further funding rounds before its token generation event, signaling continued investor interest in its growth trajectory.

With the freshly secured capital, UXLINK aims to introduce the "Social Liquidity Chain," leveraging Optimism and EigenDA technologies to support third-party developments. This initiative is expected to enhance the platform's capabilities and foster a more dynamic user experience.

Since its establishment in April 2023, UXLINK has seen rapid adoption, hosting more than 75,000 decentralized groups. The vast majority of its users are located in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, South Asia and Africa. The platform's unique approach to social finance, facilitated by its Web3 "UXGroups” on Telegram, emphasizes bridging real-world trust dynamics with decentralized applications.

In addition to being an investor in the company, last month the OKX Wallet was integrated with UXLINK in an effort to improve user experience, allowing UXLINK users to manage their Web3 assets more efficiently.

UXLINK's successful funding round underscores growing investor confidence in the potential of Web3 social networks and belief in their ability to revolutionize traditional social interactions and financial transactions. As the platform continues to expand and innovate, it is positioning itself to make further strides in reshaping the landscape of digital social interactions and finance.

Japanese firms expand Bitcoin holdings amid growing institutional interest

Several Japanese companies, including Remixpoint and Metaplanet, have been increasing their Bitcoin (BTC) holdings, underscoring the growing institutional interest in cryptocurrencies in the region.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashRemixpoint, an energy consulting firm listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, recently announced an additional purchase of 32.83 BTC valued at 500 million yen ($3.4 million), according to local news outlet CoinPost. This acquisition took place on May 13 at an average price of 15.23 million yen ($104,270) per BTC, bringing the company's total BTC holdings to 648.82 BTC. Remixpoint's crypto portfolio, including BTC, is now valued at 11.1 billion yen ($76 million) and also comprises Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), XRP and Dogecoin (DOGE). The firm began actively accumulating BTC late last year, motivated by multiple factors, including the positive price trend following the latest Bitcoin halving event, increased market activity after the latest U.S. presidential election and the growth in institutional participation, particularly after the approval of spot crypto ETFs in the U.S. Metaplanet becomes a major BTC holderAnother notable player, Metaplanet, a publicly traded Japanese company specializing in Bitcoin investment, has positioned itself as one of the largest BTC holders globally. As of May 12, Metaplanet’s Bitcoin yield reached 170%, with total holdings of 6,796 BTC. This places it as the 11th largest Bitcoin holder worldwide and the largest in Asia, surpassing El Salvador, which currently holds 6,177 BTC, according to data from Arkham. Metaplanet's ongoing Bitcoin accumulation aligns with CEO Simon Gerovich's advocacy for Bitcoin. In a March podcast, Gerovich said he encourages his friends to allocate "100% of their net worth into Bitcoin." The company’s strategic goal is to amass 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025 and 21,000 BTC by 2026. Reinforcing its influence, Metaplanet appointed Eric Trump, the second son of pro-crypto U.S. President Donald Trump, to its newly formed Strategic Board of Advisors in January. Evolving crypto policies, including national reservesBefore Trump's second term, Gerovich expressed his expectation that other countries would follow the U.S. once it established a national Bitcoin strategic reserve—a move formalized by President Trump through an executive order in March. In a related development, Ukraine is reportedly drafting a bill to create a similar reserve in collaboration with Binance. Meanwhile, in Taiwan, lawmaker Ko Ju-Chun has been advocating for adding Bitcoin to the country's national reserves. In a similar trend, another Japanese firm, Value Creation, disclosed plans last month to acquire 100 million yen ($660,000) worth of Bitcoin, further reflecting the growing interest among Japanese companies in crypto investments. Complementing this corporate adoption trend, Japan's Financial Services Agency (FSA) has been shaping its regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. The agency aims to redefine digital assets as financial products under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, a move viewed as an attempt to balance innovation with investor protection. Building on this approach, an FSA discussion paper released on April 10, which remained open for public feedback until May 10, proposed classifying crypto assets into two categories: those used for fundraising and business activities, and those that are not—such as BTC and ETH. This regulatory evolution, alongside increasing corporate investment in BTC, reflects Japan's efforts to adapt to the evolving global crypto landscape.

Solv raises $11M to bring overall funding to $25M

Singapore-based decentralized liquidity infrastructure and on-chain funding project Solv Protocol has raised $11 million in funding, bringing its total inward investment to date to $25 million. Taking to Medium on Oct. 14, the project outlined that in this most recent funding round, $11 million had been raised with participation from Nomura subsidiary Laser Digital, Blockchain Capital, gumi Cryptos Capital, OKX Ventures and CMT Digital. Angel investors associated with a number of blockchain projects such as Berachain, Ethena, Mezo, Core, GMX, Curve and EigenLayer also invested. $200 million valuationThis latest funding round was carried out while placing a $200 million valuation on the company. Going forward, the company plans to roll out additional products over the course of the next few weeks, with a view towards further expanding yield opportunities for Bitcoin (BTC) holders. Solv Protocol’s leading product, SolvBTC, was introduced to the market last March as the world’s first-ever yield-bearing Bitcoin. The protocol initially ran on Ethereum, Arbitrum, BNB Chain and Merlin Chain. Since launch, it has been expanded across 10 blockchain networks. The product claims to enable BTC holders to earn additional BTC all the while maintaining Bitcoin exposure. In excess of 20,000 BTC is currently staked within Solv Protocol’s SolvBTC product, accounting for around $1.3 billion in value. The project claims to have 400,000 users, with 80% of their assets allocated to yield-generating strategies.Photo by Traxer on UnsplashMarket opportunitySolv Protocol’s Co-Founder Ryan Chow spoke to the market opportunity that Bitcoin staking presents. Chow stated: “With a market cap of over $1.2 trillion, Bitcoin holds immense growth potential, Bitcoin’s staking rate is currently much lower than Ethereum’s 28%. If we can unlock similar levels of participation, Bitcoin staking could unlock $330 billion in value. We believe BTCFi will drive the next wave of innovation in the blockchain space.” In a series of X posts published on Oct. 14, the project pointed out that the lack of a native yield, limited integrations with core DeFi primitives and fragmented BTC liquidity relative to DeFi are key challenges for Bitcoin, which Solv claims to have resolved. Staking Abstraction Layer (SAL)Earlier this month, Solv, alongside BNB Chain, Ceffu and Chainlink, launched the Staking Abstraction Layer (SAL). SAL is a framework which has been designed to simplify and standardize Bitcoin staking across a number of blockchain networks. Key SAL features include cross-chain compatibility with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible chains, support for liquidity staking tokens (LSTs) and a focus on security and custody with the involvement of crypto custodian Ceffu deemed to ensure that the user’s underlying Bitcoin is secure. Solv has launched three LSTs. These include SolvBTC.BBN, an LST representing staked Bitcoin on Babylon, another Bitcoin staking platform. SolvBTC.ENA is a trading strategy involving Ethena’s basis trading. Meanwhile, SolvBTC.CORE focuses on providing Bitcoin liquidity on CoreDAO, a Bitcoin-aligned EVM-compatible layer-1 blockchain. Bitcoin staking is a more recent development which appears to have considerable potential. As Solv pointed out on X, Ethereum has a 28% staking rate right now, with Bitcoin not coming anywhere close to this figure. Staking platforms on Ethereum like Lido has $23.7 billion in total value locked (TVL) while EigenLayer weighs in at $10.9 billion.
