BIT Exchange Unveils XRP Options Trading

BIT Exchange Unveils XRP Options TradingBIT Exchange, a cryptocurrency derivatives platform, has announced the introduction of XRP options trading in a move that provides for more advanced trading dynamics within the digital assets space. The development, disclosed via a blog post published to the company’s website on Thursday, offers users the unprecedented opportunity to engage in XRP options trading without the need to possess the actual cryptocurrency.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashUS dollar settlementA distinguishing feature of this initiative is that profit and loss settlements will be conducted in US dollars. To ensure a seamless experience, BIT Exchange has partnered with OrBit Markets to maintain robust order book liquidity. This expansion of offerings complements the exchange’s existing suite, which already includes stalwarts like Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Cardano (ADA), Toncoin (TON), and Milady (LADYS).Facilitating hedgingFor the uninitiated, options are derivative contracts that empower the holder with the right to buy or sell the underlying asset at a predetermined price before a specified date. Call options grant the holder the buying privilege, while put options provide the selling prerogative. Typically deployed for hedging purposes, options play a pivotal role in mitigating bullish or bearish risks, and they can also act as a supplementary revenue source when traders “write” options alongside their spot market holdings.Justin Buitendam, BIT Exchange’s Global Head of Institutional Sales, remarked on the milestone, stating: “We’re excited to be among the early platforms offering XRP options trading to institutional and retail traders, providing both long and short options trading opportunities.”XRP boostAs of now, XRP boasts a market capitalization of $26.5 billion, positioning it as the world’s fifth-largest cryptocurrency. Notably, XRP, akin to several other alternative cryptocurrencies, exhibits greater volatility compared to the more established Bitcoin and Ether. The native token of the Ripple global payments network has experienced a market resurgence in recent weeks, following a positive outcome to a lawsuit taken by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against Ripple Labs in the United States. In the wake of that decision, many cryptocurrency exchanges that had delisted the token immediately reinstated it. BIT Exchange’s strategic move to introduce XRP options aligns with those recent legal developments.Ripple, as the issuer of the XRP token, garnered a partial victory in its ongoing legal battle against the SEC. The court ruled that XRP is not classified as a security when traded on centralized exchanges. However, a different classification may apply when XRP is directly sold to institutions. The matter is far from settled, however. More recently, the SEC has sought permission to challenge the court’s verdict, underscoring the dynamic and evolving landscape of cryptocurrency regulations.BIT Exchange was spun out of Singapore-based crypto financial services platform, Matrixport. Both have been co-founded by Jihan Wu, better known for having founded leading Chinese crypto mining outfit Bitmain.

G20 Nations Believed to Have Agreed Upon Global Crypto Framework

G20 Nations Believed to Have Agreed Upon Global Crypto FrameworkUnder India’s current leadership of the G20, reports are emerging that participating nations have reached a unanimous consensus on establishing a common framework for cryptocurrency regulation.According to local news sources, this monumental decision has been reached, and it’s expected to take center stage during the 18th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit scheduled for September 9–10 in New Delhi.Photo by Rachit Chaudhary on UnsplashIMF/FSB synthesis paperThe reports published on Wednesday cite information from official sources that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Financial Stability Board (FSB) have collaboratively released a synthesis paper laying the groundwork for this comprehensive regulatory framework. Consequently, discussions around this initiative will likely feature prominently on the agenda during the upcoming leaders’ summit. The unity achieved by G20 nations in forging this global cryptocurrency regulation framework marks a significant milestone in the ever-evolving area of digital assets. The framework’s primary goal is to provide a structured approach to oversee cryptocurrencies, potentially mitigating risks associated with their use, all while fostering innovation within the rapidly expanding crypto sector.Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs)Aside from this development relative to digital assets, multiple working groups have been working on recommendations related to Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs). These groups have proposed measures to confront future financing challenges, and there is growing support for establishing a $200 billion fund to meet financing needs over the next decade.Beyond financial concerns, the G20 nations, under India’s leadership, have embarked on a comprehensive evaluation of the high volatility in food and energy security. Stressing the vital importance of stability in these sectors for sustainable global growth, these issues will take the spotlight during the leaders’ summit later this week.TaxationAnother area where India has made significant strides is international taxation. During India’s G20 Presidency, a pillar taxation system for international taxation has been recommended. The efforts in this domain have been described as making “significant progress” so far, underscoring the commitment of G20 nations to address global taxation challenges. It’s interesting to note that on the home front, India has been far less progressive when it comes to crypto-related taxation. The country has imposed a 30% tax on cryptocurrency transactions. Local crypto exchanges have also pointed to a 1% Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) which is being applied to exchanges as a major challenge that is having an impact on their operations.A threat and an opportunityLate last month, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged his G20 counterparts to work towards global collaboration in respect of formulating global crypto regulations. On Wednesday India’s Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, confirmed that active discussions were underway as part of India’s G20 presidency. At an event in India’s financial capital of Mumbai, Sitharaman stated:”India’s [G20] presidency has put on the table key issues related to regulating or understanding that there should be a framework for handling issues related to crypto assets.” While confirming that G20 members were working toward establishing a global crypto framework, Sitharaman also remarked that crypto was a “threat as well as an opportunity.”

South Korea Embarks on Wholesale CBDC Pilot Program

South Korea Embarks on Wholesale CBDC Pilot ProgramAiming to pave the way for a future-oriented monetary infrastructure, South Korean financial agencies announced a plan on Wednesday (local time) to pilot a central bank digital currency (CBDC). This trial is designed to evaluate its practical use in real-world scenarios. The Bank of Korea (BOK), alongside the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), has been working with the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) from the inception of this project’s blueprint. Together, they plan to partner with multiple commercial banks to successfully carry out this initiative.Photo by Y K on UnsplashWholesale CBDCThe test will concentrate on a wholesale CBDC designed for transactions and settlements between financial institutions. This concept is akin to how commercial banks use reserves in their central bank accounts for transactions and settlements.Meanwhile, banks will introduce tokenized deposits for public use within the CBDC network. These payment instruments will circulate securely within the new monetary infrastructure built by the BOK and managed jointly with the FSC and the FSS.The pilot of this cutting-edge monetary infrastructure is poised to set the stage for the introduction of diverse, innovative payment and financial services that stand out from current offerings. This effort will also lay the groundwork for newer financial products, like security tokens, to be traded with greater safety and efficiency.Participation from citizensThe test aims to complete its Proof of Concept (PoC) through technical trials in simulated settings. Furthermore, a select group of citizens will be given the opportunity to engage in specific use case tests, letting them experience firsthand the advantages of the emerging digital payment methods. This project will significantly contribute to the future research and development of CBDC infrastructure. The Korean financial authorities have engaged in in-depth discussions regarding policy matters leading up to the test. To ensure alignment with existing laws, only banks will be involved in this initial phase. Decisions on expanding the test will come later, after a thorough evaluation of relevant policy considerations after the trial. The agencies will continue working to ensure that transaction tests involving citizens are conducted with sufficient user protection measures under the existing legal framework. Moreover, from the outset of the test’s preparation, the BIS offered insights from its research and development experiences with CBDC systems. In particular, members from the BIS’s Innovation Hub and the Monetary and Economic Department provided technical advice on designing and constructing a CBDC network. Stemming from their discussions, the BIS and the BOK jointly released a report highlighting the test’s importance and its intricately crafted model. This trial is a step towards identifying the best CBDC model suited for Korea’s financial and economic landscape. It’s important to note that the test doesn’t necessarily indicate a complete rollout of a CBDC or the final version of a CBDC network.Moving forward, the BOK, FSC, and FSS will form a collaborative working group. They’ll work hand-in-hand with pertinent ministries and entities, including the Ministry of Economy and Finance, to ensure a seamless execution of the test. Their technical partnership with the BIS will also remain ongoing. The selection process for a system developer began on October 4. Later this month, there will be an informational session for companies and banks engaged in the project. By the end of November, the financial authorities will unveil information regarding the banks involved and the specific use cases slated for testing. Public involvement is anticipated to start in the fourth quarter of next year.
