OKX collaborates with Polygon Labs on layer-2 network launch

Web3 & Enterprise·November 16, 2023, 12:22 AM

Seychelles-incorporated OKX, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, has collaborated with blockchain development firm Polygon Labs to unveil the testnet for its latest zero-knowledge layer-2 network, named “X1.”

Introducing “X1”

The company announced initial details on X1 via a press release published on Tuesday. This Ethereum-based ZK network has been constructed using the Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK), with OKX playing a pivotal role as a core contributor to the CDK. Substantial engineering resources are being invested by OKX to strengthen the Ethereum scaling solution.

The new network will serve to bolster the utility of OKX's native token, OKB. OKB will be used for X1’s gas fees. There has been a lot of chatter about the utility of exchange tokens following the collapse of FTX, as that platform was over-reliant on its native token in propping up the exchange. Similarly, critics are speculating that a comparable dynamic may be at play at Binance, relative to its native token BNB.

Likely buoyed by news of this development, OKB observed a 10% unit price increase on Tuesday. However, that move has retraced downwards in the meantime.

ZK proof technology

X1 has been designed with ZK proofs, a method through which one party can convince another that a particular claim is true without disclosing details of the claim itself. In this way, X1 ensures high security and scalability while mitigating transaction costs. The network seamlessly aligns with Ethereum, facilitating the secure deployment of EVM-based dApps and connectivity with a wide array of smart contracts, wallets and tools. OKX underscores X1’s status as its new native network.

Chief Innovation Officer of OKX, Jason Lau, expressed optimism about X1, deeming it integral to the firm’s efforts in guiding users into the realm of Web3. Lau emphasized the scalability and accessibility of X1, especially for developers who can leverage it to construct user-friendly Web3 applications while maintaining interoperability with other networks.

The collaboration with Polygon Labs marks another milestone in the evolution of Polygon’s CDK. Launched in August, the CDK enables the development of layer-2 blockchains on Ethereum, emphasizing zero-knowledge proofs. Networks deployed using the CDK gain the ability to connect to a shared ZK bridge, fostering interoperability.

Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon, underscored the significance of X1’s adoption of Polygon CDK technology, envisioning a future where CDK-deployed chains interoperate and coexist within a larger network of ZK-powered layer 2s in the Polygon CDK ecosystem. The CDK has gained traction, with various Layer 2s, including Immutable zkEVM, IDEX, Palm Network and Astar zkEVM, currently in development using this technology.

Industry trend

A trend is developing among crypto exchange platforms and their involvement in establishing layer two networks. Earlier this year, U.S. crypto platform Coinbase introduced the Base network, an Ethereum layer-2 network that focuses on offering a safe, low-cost and developer-friendly mechanism to build on-chain.

Last week, it emerged that another leading U.S.-based crypto platform, Kraken, is on the lookout for a development partner to enable it in building out its own layer-2 blockchain network. According to those reports, it’s understood that Kraken is considering partnering with Polygon Labs, Matter Labs or the Nil Foundation.

As this OKX-Polygon Labs collaboration progresses, the industry will continue to observe how X1, with its innovative technology stack and seamless integration with Ethereum, contributes towards broader Web3 development.

BIT Exchange Unveils XRP Options Trading

BIT Exchange Unveils XRP Options TradingBIT Exchange, a cryptocurrency derivatives platform, has announced the introduction of XRP options trading in a move that provides for more advanced trading dynamics within the digital assets space. The development, disclosed via a blog post published to the company’s website on Thursday, offers users the unprecedented opportunity to engage in XRP options trading without the need to possess the actual cryptocurrency.Photo by Kanchanara on UnsplashUS dollar settlementA distinguishing feature of this initiative is that profit and loss settlements will be conducted in US dollars. To ensure a seamless experience, BIT Exchange has partnered with OrBit Markets to maintain robust order book liquidity. This expansion of offerings complements the exchange’s existing suite, which already includes stalwarts like Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Cardano (ADA), Toncoin (TON), and Milady (LADYS).Facilitating hedgingFor the uninitiated, options are derivative contracts that empower the holder with the right to buy or sell the underlying asset at a predetermined price before a specified date. Call options grant the holder the buying privilege, while put options provide the selling prerogative. Typically deployed for hedging purposes, options play a pivotal role in mitigating bullish or bearish risks, and they can also act as a supplementary revenue source when traders “write” options alongside their spot market holdings.Justin Buitendam, BIT Exchange’s Global Head of Institutional Sales, remarked on the milestone, stating: “We’re excited to be among the early platforms offering XRP options trading to institutional and retail traders, providing both long and short options trading opportunities.”XRP boostAs of now, XRP boasts a market capitalization of $26.5 billion, positioning it as the world’s fifth-largest cryptocurrency. Notably, XRP, akin to several other alternative cryptocurrencies, exhibits greater volatility compared to the more established Bitcoin and Ether. The native token of the Ripple global payments network has experienced a market resurgence in recent weeks, following a positive outcome to a lawsuit taken by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against Ripple Labs in the United States. In the wake of that decision, many cryptocurrency exchanges that had delisted the token immediately reinstated it. BIT Exchange’s strategic move to introduce XRP options aligns with those recent legal developments.Ripple, as the issuer of the XRP token, garnered a partial victory in its ongoing legal battle against the SEC. The court ruled that XRP is not classified as a security when traded on centralized exchanges. However, a different classification may apply when XRP is directly sold to institutions. The matter is far from settled, however. More recently, the SEC has sought permission to challenge the court’s verdict, underscoring the dynamic and evolving landscape of cryptocurrency regulations.BIT Exchange was spun out of Singapore-based crypto financial services platform, Matrixport. Both have been co-founded by Jihan Wu, better known for having founded leading Chinese crypto mining outfit Bitmain.

At the heart of the project lies the “Play, earn, and own” model. Aside from the content backed by the "Carrie and Friends" intellectual property (IP), the project has expanded its footprint by launching the Cling Wallet, the NFT project "Kola from the Space" and the crypto game "Superkola Tactics."Photo by GuerrillaBuzz on UnsplashUsers from Southeast Asia and Latin AmericaAccording to data provided by Carrieverse, a significant portion of its users come from Southeast Asian and Latin American countries. Notably, in Indonesia and Vietnam, Carrieverse ranked second and third respectively in the newly released game section of their Google Play Store. The game generated the 15th-largest revenues of all games played in the Philippines and the 16th-largest revenues in Thailand. Carrieverse is reportedly on the top 100 casual games on Google Play Store across 86 countries.  The game also topped the trending chart on the global blockchain ranking site "PlayToEarn" on the day of its global launch, securing second place as of the following Sunday.  Building a robust IP-based metaverse platform The CEO of Carrieverse, David Yoon, said that Carrieverse strives to lead the Korean blockchain gaming industry and contribute to Korea's reputation as a Web3 powerhouse. Yoon said, "A sound ecosystem is being created due to the increase in on-chain data such as wallet generation and conversion of the governance token $CVTX, as well as the increased incineration of Celeb, which can be exchanged for $CVTX. The value of the game and $CVTX will continue to rise further." Carrieverse has also announced plans for various large-scale IP collaborations with other companies, intending to become an IP-based metaverse platform with high DAUs.
