Bithumb Live Files for Bankruptcy

Policy & Regulation·October 23, 2023, 10:03 AM

South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb’s live commerce platform Bithumb Live — an attempt at business diversification — has filed for bankruptcy. The platform entered bankruptcy proceedings last year, brought on by business difficulties and various suspicions of embezzlement involving its CEO.

According to legal sources on Monday, the Seoul Bankruptcy Court declared Bithumb Live’s bankruptcy last Monday. The court plans to hold creditor meetings and inspections on November 28 to incorporate creditors’ opinions into the bankruptcy proceedings and assess the status of the company. Major companies like LG Uplus, SK Telecom, SK Magic, and Lotte Card are among the platform’s creditors.

Bithumb Live’s background

Bithumb Live was founded in September 2021 by Bithumb and Bucket Studio, who each invested KRW 6 billion (approximately $4.4 million). Bucket Studio is a content distribution company that gained considerable attention with the global success of the Netflix original series “Squid Game” last year because it holds a 15% stake in Artist Company, an entertainment planning agency co-founded by “Squid Game” lead actor Lee Jung-jae and actor Jung Woo-sung. In particular, Bucket Studio’s CEO Kang Ji-yeon is the sister of Kang Jong-hyun, who is embroiled in allegations related to the ownership of Bithumb.

Bithumb and Bucket Studio each hold a 37.5% share of Bithumb Live, making a combined ownership of over 75%. Bithumb Live, led by Kang Ji-yeon, had been established with the intent to create a commerce platform with various features like a metaverse, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and cryptocurrency payments. After its establishment, it announced that it would challenge its key competitor Naver’s prominent live shopping platform by preparing to sign deals with 15 different companies.

Financial hardships

However, the platform hit a roadblock just one year after its establishment and found itself unable to escape financial difficulties. According to last year’s business report, Bithumb Live’s liabilities exceeded its assets by approximately KRW 248 million and the platform recorded a net loss of KRW 10.2 billion. Unable to withstand such losses, it announced an indefinite temporary closure via its internal messenger to employees in October of last year. The employees ended up working only four hours a day, resulting in a more than 50% reduction in working hours. Subsequently, the number of employees, which was 73 in September, plummeted to just four in January of this year, essentially signaling a total stop to business operations. In the first half of this year, Bithumb Live’s net loss amounted to almost KRW 1.1 billion.

Management entanglements

On top of these financial strains, the company was also plagued by Kang Ji-yeon and her brother Kang Jong-hyun’s owner’s risk, which encompassed allegations of embezzlement and misappropriation. In July of this year, Kang Ji-yeon was sent to trial on charges of embezzlement and misappropriation at Bucket Studio. Along with her brother and former Chorokbaem (CRB) Group Chairman Won Young-sik, she was accused of granting call options on convertible bonds held by Bithumb affiliates Vidente and Bucket Studio for free to companies controlled by Won’s children between December 2021 and July 2022, inciting damages worth approximately KRW 58.7 billion to the respective companies. In the process, she was also found to have received KRW 32.2 billion in acquisition payments. Kang Jong-hyun had been detained and on trial since February of this year.

Bithumb Live’s largest shareholder, Bucket Studio, is also in a tight spot. Back in June, the Korea Exchange imposed a penalty of three points on Bucket Studio for reversing its disclosure. The company had been penalized five points the previous month after withdrawing its decision to issue convertible bonds. In particular, the studio also recorded an operating loss of KRW 7 billion and a net loss of KRW 195.6 billion last year based on consolidated financial statements. In the first half of this year alone, it suffered an operating loss of KRW 896 million, raising red flags for its management.

Notably, this functionality accepts a wide range of fiat currencies, including the US dollar, euro, Hong Kong dollar, and others. With this development, Okto streamlines the process, enabling users to seamlessly convert fiat into crypto within the app itself.Months-long integration processIt’s worth noting that although the announcement of Transak’s support on Okto was made on Thursday, the integration process began several months earlier. OKX Strengthens Partnership with Manchester City Football Club

OKX Strengthens Partnership with Manchester City Football ClubSeychelles-based crypto exchange OKX has announced the expansion of its sponsorship deal with Manchester City Football Club, the treble-winning English Premier League soccer champions. The announcement was made through a virtual reveal video featuring player avatars, presented at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium. News of the deal was also posted on the English club’s website on Friday. While the valuation of the deal remains undisclosed, the collaboration signifies a significant milestone for both parties. The new agreement, which spans multiple years, establishes OKX as the official sleeve partner on both the men’s and women’s first-team playing kits.Photo by Giero Saaski on UnsplashExtended partnershipUnder this extended partnership, the OKX logo will be prominently displayed on the sleeves of Manchester City’s playing kits, solidifying its position as a key sponsor. Additionally, OKX will retain its presence on the club’s training kit sleeve.City Football Group, the holding company that owns Manchester City and other soccer teams like New York City FC and Melbourne City FC, oversees the management and operations of the club.OKX initially became Manchester City’s official cryptocurrency exchange partner in March 2022. Subsequently, in July of the same year, the exchange secured a sponsorship deal to feature its logo on the front of the club’s training kit throughout the 2022/2023 season. At the time, the agreement was reported to be valued at over $12 million.OKX CollectiveIn February, OKX launched the “OKX Collective” alongside Manchester City players Jack Grealish, Rúben Dias, Ilkay Gündoğan, and Alex Greenwood. This immersive metaverse fan experience offered exclusive content and rewards, allowing fans to engage with the club in a unique way.OKX’s CMO Haider Rafique expressed satisfaction with the evolving partnership, stating: “Manchester City was our first official global brand partnership, and in just a year and a half, we have come a long way. We always intended to integrate with the sport and help the club lead on leaning into Web3. Fast forward fifteen months, we now have a metaverse, an NFT initiative, and a number of other new projects that we are excited about.”Additional sports sponsorshipsBesides Manchester City, OKX has also established partnerships with other prominent sports brands and athletes, including McLaren Formula 1, the Tribeca Festival, Olympian Scotty James, and F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo. While OKX’s partnership with Manchester City strengthens its global fan base, it’s worth noting that the sale of crypto derivatives, a product offered by OKX, was effectively banned by the UK’s financial regulator in January 2021. Consequently, OKX and other crypto exchanges have refrained from advertising such services in the country. As the Premier League clubs have collectively agreed to restrict gambling sponsorships on team shirts, there are concerns that similar restrictions may be imposed on crypto company sponsorships. However, any such developments are expected to be some years away, as the changes regarding gambling sponsorships are scheduled to take effect in the 2026/2027 soccer season.Marketing spend by crypto firms has sobered up quite a bit since the heady heights of the last bull run. However, OKX remains one entity which has been fairly consistent in continuing its marketing efforts regardless of market conditions.

Bitgamo Set to Launch 150 Crypto ATMs in Asia

Bitgamo Set to Launch 150 Crypto ATMs in AsiaIn a press release published on Monday, Luxembourg-registered crypto startup Bitgamo outlined its intention to roll out crypto ATMs across Asia.Photo by Monstera Production on PexelsAsian network rolloutDescribing itself as a no KYC (Know Your Customer) exchange for crypto-to-fiat transactions, the firm has the intention of embarking on a crypto expansion initiative that will see it deploy 150 crypto ATMs across key Asian markets. The press release quotes “official sources” as having confirmed that these crypto ATMs will be operational across the region by February 2024. The firm intends to locate the machines within markets such as Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Indonesia.European expansionIn alignment with its growth strategy, Bitgamo has also unveiled plans to introduce an additional 75 cryptocurrency ATMs across Europe over the course of 2024.Founded in 2020, Bitgamo claims that its objective is to address privacy concerns while promoting the adoption of cryptocurrencies in regions where acquiring and holding digital assets can be challenging.Gabriel Weber, the company’s Director of Communications, expressed his excitement about the expansion initiative. He stated:“We are thrilled to be able to offer this innovative service in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. The addition of our ATMs will make it super easy for users to sell crypto, and we are confident that they will be valuable resources for the thriving crypto communities in these countries.”No KYCThe crypto exchange and ATM business claims to offer a no KYC exchange policy, which sets it apart in an increasingly regulated landscape. As a Luxembourg-registered entity, Bitgamo classifies cryptocurrencies as commodities, adhering it says, to the legal framework of its home country. While the convenience of a no KYC approach is evident, it appears to be going against the current trend and recent regulatory pressures. Earlier this year Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin implemented mandatory KYC. Bitget, another Seychelles-based exchange, followed suit earlier this month, while another Asia-centric exchange, OKX, has tightened its KYC policy.Online concernBitgamo isn’t well known and with that, this recent announcement has sparked some in the crypto community to express doubt. One individual on crypto-Twitter wrote: “This is a scam…don’t fall for it!” . . . “Raising awareness as their paid press releases are currently doing the rounds, trying to lure in victims.”Meanwhile, a YouTuber called “Negocios TV” urged caution relative to what it described as a possible scam. It’s certainly true to say that there’s very little information in the public sphere relative to Bitgamo and with that, market participants will need to do their own due diligence. Equally, we are not aware if these concerns are real or misplaced. If the offering is in fact legitimate, then it’s a very positive development. Crypto ATMs have often acted as the first touch-point for many individuals in accessing digital currency. Recent years have seen a considerable increase in the global network of crypto ATMs, offering those who want to onboard into the crypto sphere easy access to doing so and possibly purchasing their first digital currency.
