OKX Strengthens Partnership with Manchester City Football Club

Web3 & Enterprise·July 01, 2023, 5:51 AM

Seychelles-based crypto exchange OKX has announced the expansion of its sponsorship deal with Manchester City Football Club, the treble-winning English Premier League soccer champions.

The announcement was made through a virtual reveal video featuring player avatars, presented at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium. News of the deal was also posted on the English club’s website on Friday.

While the valuation of the deal remains undisclosed, the collaboration signifies a significant milestone for both parties. The new agreement, which spans multiple years, establishes OKX as the official sleeve partner on both the men’s and women’s first-team playing kits.

Extended partnership

Under this extended partnership, the OKX logo will be prominently displayed on the sleeves of Manchester City’s playing kits, solidifying its position as a key sponsor. Additionally, OKX will retain its presence on the club’s training kit sleeve.

City Football Group, the holding company that owns Manchester City and other soccer teams like New York City FC and Melbourne City FC, oversees the management and operations of the club.

OKX initially became Manchester City’s official cryptocurrency exchange partner in March 2022. Subsequently, in July of the same year, the exchange secured a sponsorship deal to feature its logo on the front of the club’s training kit throughout the 2022/2023 season. At the time, the agreement was reported to be valued at over $12 million.

OKX Collective

In February, OKX launched the “OKX Collective” alongside Manchester City players Jack Grealish, Rúben Dias, Ilkay Gündoğan, and Alex Greenwood. This immersive metaverse fan experience offered exclusive content and rewards, allowing fans to engage with the club in a unique way.

OKX’s CMO Haider Rafique expressed satisfaction with the evolving partnership, stating: “Manchester City was our first official global brand partnership, and in just a year and a half, we have come a long way. We always intended to integrate with the sport and help the club lead on leaning into Web3. Fast forward fifteen months, we now have a metaverse, an NFT initiative, and a number of other new projects that we are excited about.”

Additional sports sponsorships

Besides Manchester City, OKX has also established partnerships with other prominent sports brands and athletes, including McLaren Formula 1, the Tribeca Festival, Olympian Scotty James, and F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo.

While OKX’s partnership with Manchester City strengthens its global fan base, it’s worth noting that the sale of crypto derivatives, a product offered by OKX, was effectively banned by the UK’s financial regulator in January 2021. Consequently, OKX and other crypto exchanges have refrained from advertising such services in the country.

As the Premier League clubs have collectively agreed to restrict gambling sponsorships on team shirts, there are concerns that similar restrictions may be imposed on crypto company sponsorships. However, any such developments are expected to be some years away, as the changes regarding gambling sponsorships are scheduled to take effect in the 2026/2027 soccer season.

Marketing spend by crypto firms has sobered up quite a bit since the heady heights of the last bull run. However, OKX remains one entity which has been fairly consistent in continuing its marketing efforts regardless of market conditions.

HashKey Enhances User Security with Exchange Insurance Partnership

HashKey Enhances User Security with Exchange Insurance PartnershipHong Kong-based cryptocurrency exchange HashKey has taken a step towards bolstering its users’ security by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with fintech firm OneDegree to provide insurance coverage for digital assets held on the platform.Photo by Manson Yim on UnsplashIndustry-wide significanceThat’s according to a report in local news media on Wednesday. The move represents a positive development not only for HashKey users, as it extends protection to both hot wallets and cold storage addresses, but for the overall crypto space. After the trail of destruction left by a series of high-profile crypto collapses in 2022, the overarching crypto space has been crying out for adequate solutions that reassure crypto market participants that their funds are safe when placed on centralized crypto platforms. In the traditional banking world, in most jurisdictions there are insurance-based schemes that guarantee a certain percentage or level of depositors funds. In many cases, these schemes are backed by the central government.Asian crypto market participants have been hit harder than most due to these collapses having nothing in place in terms of deposit safeguards. In Singapore, crypto lenders Vauld and Hodlnaut failed, leaving deposit shortfalls. The city-state’s residents were particularly hard hit when it came to FTX as many Singaporeans had opted to use the exchange given that the authorities had banned Binance from trading there.Xiaoqi Weng, the Chief Operating Officer of HashKey, emphasized the company’s commitment to fortifying its financial, technical, and service infrastructure to offer customers comprehensive protection. The goal is not only to enhance user security but also to contribute to the overall development of Hong Kong’s digital asset ecosystem.Mitigating riskYanlin Guo, Co-founder of OneDegree, underscored the importance of establishing a robust framework for cryptocurrencies that includes insurance to identify and mitigate potential risks effectively. This collaboration between HashKey and OneDegree aims to provide added peace of mind to cryptocurrency investors who entrust their assets to the exchange.HashKey achieved a significant milestone on August 3 when it became the first cryptocurrency exchange to receive regulatory licensing from the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission, enabling it to offer services to retail investors. Subsequently, on August 28, the exchange launched its trading services, albeit with relatively low trading volumes.Currently, HashKey Hong Kong supports the trading of Bitcoin and Ethereum, with no options for margin trading or cryptocurrency derivatives. Nevertheless, the exchange accepts fiat deposits in both US dollars and Hong Kong dollars from authorized financial institutions worldwide. The issue of user insurance has been a contentious topic in the cryptocurrency industry, with various exchanges offering different levels of protection. Some exchanges provide no insurance beyond a contractual claim to users’ assets in the event of bankruptcy. Others offer insurance solely for fiat deposits, while a select few, such as Binance and Bitget, extend coverage to crypto-related incidents.HashKey has answered a market need by integrating this insurance product into its trading service. It’s likely that other platforms will follow suit in the not-too-distant future.

OPNX Makes a Play for Struggling Crypto Lender Hodlnaut

OPNX Makes a Play for Struggling Crypto Lender HodlnautIn a strategic move OPNX, the crypto claims trading platform associated with the founders of failed Singaporean crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC), is eyeing the acquisition of Hodlnaut, a beleaguered crypto lender currently undergoing court-supervised restructuring in Singapore.Photo by Meriç Dağlı on UnsplashCompelling offerThat’s according to a person familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg News on Sunday, together with a term sheet seen by Bloomberg. It’s understood that OPNX has presented a compelling offer to infuse Hodlnaut with a much-needed capital injection of approximately $30 million worth of FLEX digital tokens. These tokens are closely tied to CoinFLEX, a trading platform that ran into difficulty in 2022, co-founded by Mark Lamb and Sudhu Arumugam. The Seychelles-based company rebranded and relaunched as OPNX earlier this year with the 3AC founders on board. The FLEX token holds a current market valuation of around $647 million, according to CoinGecko data.Partial creditor payoutThe OPNX proposal aims to fund a partial creditor payout to facilitate the resolution of pending claims. This proposal comes on the heels of efforts by Hodlnaut’s directors to reach out directly to its users, a move that was met with objections by the interim judicial managers overseeing Hodlnaut’s restructuring. A letter dated July 29 from the administrators confirms this development.Under the terms of the deal outlined in a term sheet, OPNX’s capital injection through FLEX tokens would translate into a 75% ownership stake in Hodlnaut. The restructuring plan, if approved by creditors, would see these creditors receiving 30% of their claims in FLEX and other tokens. Alternatively, they would be entitled to a pro-rata payment of up to 95% of the total available corporate assets, whichever is more favorable to them.Hodlnaut, headquartered in Singapore with operations also in Hong Kong, got caught up in crypto market turbulence, leading to a suspension of withdrawals a year ago. Subsequently, it embarked on a court-monitored restructuring journey in Singapore. Neither Hodlnaut nor its judicial managers have provided immediate comments on the OPNX bid.The founders of Hodlnaut, Simon Lee and Zhu Juntao, had earlier proposed a business sale as a preferable alternative to liquidation. This proposal aimed to provide better outcomes for creditors, who had initially expressed preference for liquidation over a proposed restructuring plan earlier in the year.OPNX reprimandThe journey of both OPNX and Hodlnaut is also marked by legal and regulatory challenges. In April, authorities in Dubai reprimanded Su Zhu, Kyle Davies, Mark Lamb, OPNX’s CEO Leslie Lamb, and Sudhu Arumugam for operating and promoting OPNX without the required local license. Meanwhile, the liquidators of 3AC have alleged a lack of cooperation by Zhu and Davies, as they seek to recover $1.3 billion from the duo, reflecting the losses preceding the fund’s downfall. The 3AC founders recently claimed that they would donate OPNX profits to 3AC creditors. However, Kyle Davies is fighting the efforts of the 3AC liquidator to reclaim funds from the founders.

China Makes History by Settling Cross-Border Oil Deal with Digital Yuan

China Makes History by Settling Cross-Border Oil Deal with Digital YuanThe digital yuan, China’s central bank digital currency (CBDC), also known as e-CNY, was used for the first time to settle a significant oil transaction.Chinese state-owned media outlet China Daily reported on Saturday that the Shanghai Petroleum and Natural Gas Exchange (SHPGX) revealed on October 20 that PetroChina International, a subsidiary of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), successfully acquired 1 million barrels of crude.Photo by engin akyurt on UnsplashAdvancing e-CNY use internationallyThis transaction is a response to the call by the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government to incorporate the digital yuan into international trade, marking a noteworthy stride towards the broader adoption of the digital currency. The exact seller and price details for the deal were not disclosed. This historic crude oil transaction signals not only the increasing use of the digital yuan in global trade but also a noteworthy step in the movement towards de-dollarization. Reports from China Daily suggest that the use of the yuan in cross-border settlements experienced a remarkable 35% year-on-year increase in the first three quarters of 2023, reaching a total of $1.39 trillion. This milestone isn’t the first time the yuan has been utilized in the energy sector. In March, the yuan was first used in a liquefied natural gas (LNG) purchase on the SHPGX, as French TotalEnergies reached an agreement to sell LNG to the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC). Recently, another LNG deal was executed between CNOOC and French Engie, although these transactions did not involve the digital yuan.In parallel developments, First Abu Dhabi Bank announced on October 19 that it had established an agreement on digital currency with the Bank of China during the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. China and the United Arab Emirates, including Abu Dhabi, are participants in the mBridge platform designed to facilitate cross-border transactions using CBDCs. The mBridge platform is expected to launch as a minimum viable product in the coming year.Furthering mass adoptionThe Chinese authorities are taking several distinct approaches in furthering mass adoption of the e-CNY. The Chinese subsidiaries of both Singapore’s DBS Bank and France’s BNP Paribas have recently partnered with the People’s Bank of China to enable their international clients operating in China to use the digital yuan.A long list of initiatives have been taken within mainland China by regional governing authorities to further the use of the CBDC. To further enable mass adoption at home, a new offline SIM card-based digital yuan wallet was developed and launched earlier this year. The successful use of the digital yuan in settling this oil deal represents a significant step forward in the internationalization of China’s currency and the growing influence of CBDCs on the global economic stage. As the world watches these developments unfold, the digital yuan continues to make strides towards becoming a crucial means of exchange in international trade and finance.
