Building on Okto

That’s according to a report published by Cointelegraph on Thursday. Okto was introduced by CoinDCX in August 2022, and the firm swiftly moved to expand its services. The integration with Transak represents a pivotal step in this direction.

This strategic integration immediately expands the reach of the Okto wallet from supporting 60 countries to an impressive 155 jurisdictions. Neeraj Khandelwal, Co-Founder of both CoinDCX and Okto, emphasized the significance of this move, stating that it allows users in numerous countries to engage with cryptocurrencies directly through Okto.

While Transak supports approximately 160 tokens, Okto goes above and beyond by allowing users to store more than 1,000 tokens across multiple blockchain networks, including Polygon, Fantom, Avalanche, and others. According to an Okto spokesperson, the wallet can accommodate up to 3,000 tokens, providing ample flexibility for cryptocurrency enthusiasts.

Seamless fiat-to-crypto conversion

Khandelwal also spoke to the value add that a more seamless asset conversion process will bring. He stated:

“The integration of Transak now allows users to seamlessly convert fiat to crypto right within the app. Prior to this integration, users had to transfer funds from another decentralized wallet, such as MetaMask.”

Transak’s integration brings a key feature to Okto — the ability for users to purchase cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) directly within the wallet. Notably, this functionality accepts a wide range of fiat currencies, including the US dollar, euro, Hong Kong dollar, and others. Prior to the Transak integration, users were required to transfer digital assets from external wallets like MetaMask. With this development, Okto streamlines the process, enabling users to seamlessly convert fiat into crypto within the app itself.

Months-long integration process

It’s worth noting that although the announcement of Transak’s support on Okto was made on Thursday, the integration process began several months earlier. As early as August, some Indian users reported encountering Transak while Okto was in the testing phase. The integration process itself commenced in April, with the official roll-out to all customers occurring in mid-September.

Transak, a global Web3 payment and onboarding infrastructure provider, plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between traditional finance and the digital asset ecosystem. It is a well-established on-ramp solution in the cryptocurrency industry, with platforms like MetaMask, Coinbase, and PancakeSwap among its clientele.

In recent days, Okto has also announced a partnership with ReHold, a multi-chain protocol which has been developed to enable users to maximize their crypto earnings. In the coming weeks, Okto and ReHold will work towards integrating Okto’s wallet with ReHold.

The Okto-Transak integration is in line with Transak’s mission to facilitate crypto adoption by providing easy access to digital assets. Earlier this week, Transak also announced its integration with The Open Network’s (TON) wallet, known as Tonkeeper. This collaboration opens up Toncoin (TON) purchases directly with fiat currencies to users in more than 150 countries, marking a significant milestone in expanding the TON ecosystem.

Kiln raises $17M to fund APAC growth

Kiln, the Paris-based Ethereum staking platform, has successfully secured $17 million in a recent funding round, as revealed in a press release on Thursday. Round led by 1kxThe financing round was spearheaded by 1kx, with participation from Crypto.com, Wintermute Ventures, Thailand’s KXVC and Hong Kong’s LBank and IOSG. This infusion of capital brings Kiln's total funding to $35 million, marking a milestone in the company's growth trajectory. The latest funding follows a previous investment of $17.6 million in 2022 from Illuminate Financial, LeadBlock Partners, Sparkle Ventures, Alven and Blue Yard Capital, among others. Kiln opted not to disclose the valuation associated with the recent funding round. In 2021, Canadian blockchain infrastructure and staking firm Figment reached unicorn status with a $1.4 billion valuation. The Kiln platform has witnessed significant growth, increasing its staked assets under management to $4.2 billion in 2023. Acknowledging that growth on Jan. 4, Fred Lardieg, partner at Abu Dhabi sovereign fund Mubadala wrote:”This little-known French startup called @Kiln_finance has been killing it in the #Ethereum #Staking space, by relentlessly releasing new features throughout 2023. They're now the #1 operator of Ethereum validator nodes according to @ratedw3b.” The firm’s expansion is attributed to strategic integrations with various custody solutions, wallets and exchanges over the past year.Photo by DrawKit Illustrations on UnsplashRegional headquarters in SingaporeThe funds raised will be instrumental in facilitating Kiln's global expansion initiatives, including the establishment of its Asia-Pacific (APAC) headquarters in Singapore during the first quarter of the year. Additionally, the company aims to allocate resources for further product development to enhance its offerings in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space. Laszlo Szabo, CEO and co-founder of Kiln, articulated the company's mission, stating: "Our mission is to democratize value creation in the digital assets ecosystem, providing millions of users with easy access to rewards through our platform." The funds will support Kiln's commitment to making value creation in the digital assets space more accessible globally. The company plans to use the funding not only for expansion but also to introduce additional reward mechanisms in the rapidly evolving DeFi landscape. Regulatory uncertaintyWhile Ethereum staking offers users the opportunity to earn yields by validating transactions on the blockchain, the regulatory landscape remains uncertain. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has taken legal action against several exchanges involved in crypto staking, with SEC Chairman Gary Gensler expressing views on Ethereum-like tokens as potential securities. Despite regulatory challenges, Kiln's staking platform caters to institutional clients, allowing them to stake assets and offer white-label solutions to their customers. With a focus on proof-of-stake blockchains, Kiln holds a significant portion of staked assets on Ethereum, exceeding $3.1 billion, according to its Dune Analytics dashboard. 1kx Founding Partner Christopher Heymann emphasized the increasing role of financial institutions in the crypto space, stating:  "Financial institutions will become a dominant force in crypto, leveraging the immense market opportunity as they stake on behalf of their customers." By utilizing smart contracts, Kiln allows users to stake smaller amounts, overcoming the traditional barrier of a 32 ETH minimum requirement for native ether staking. This approach aligns with Kiln's goal of fostering inclusivity in the rapidly expanding world of decentralized finance.

UAE’s RAK Properties to accept crypto payments through Hubpay partnership

RAK Properties has signed a strategic agreement with Hubpay that will allow international buyers to pay for homes in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) using digital assets, the real estate developer said in a Sept. 1 statement on its website. Under the arrangement, customers can settle property purchases with major cryptocurrencies, including USDT, Bitcoin (BTC), and Ethereum (ETH). Payments will be processed on Hubpay’s regulated platform, converted into UAE dirhams, and transferred directly to RAK Properties’ account. The company said it will not handle digital assets directly. Instead, all transactions will be processed by Hubpay and its partners, who are licensed by Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), to ensure compliance and transparency. The initiative is aimed at drawing new categories of overseas investors to Ras Al Khaimah, the UAE’s sixth-most populous city, including the developer’s Mina waterfront community.Photo by Precondo CA on UnsplashUAE’s crypto market expands amid rising risksThe move comes amid growing crypto activity in the UAE. A Chainalysis report last year ranked the Middle East & North Africa as the seventh-largest crypto market and noted that the UAE’s decentralized finance adoption was above the global average, citing regulatory clarity. From July 2023 to June 2024, crypto inflows to the UAE leaned heavily toward stablecoins, which represented 51.3% of value received, compared with 44.7% worldwide. Bitcoin’s share was smaller than the global average at 16.5% versus 22.3%, while altcoins and Ethereum showed little difference at 24.4% and 7.8%, respectively. At the state level, the UAE itself has emerged as a significant player. Based on Arkham’s tracking, it is the world’s fourth-largest government Bitcoin holder, with about 6,352 BTC ($703 million). In contrast to the U.S. and U.K., whose holdings largely stem from law enforcement seizures, the UAE’s reserves come from mining through Citadel Mining. The firm is majority-owned by 2PointZero under the International Holding Company (IHC), which is chaired by Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the UAE’s national security adviser and a prominent member of the ruling family in Abu Dhabi. As crypto use has grown, so too have the risks. In the first half of this year, the UAE recorded the world’s largest average per-victim losses from crypto crime, with nearly $80,000 stolen per individual, according to Chainalysis. Only the U.S. came close to that figure, while Chile, India, Lithuania, Japan, Iran, Israel, Norway, and Germany rounded out the global top ten. Harmonizing crypto rulesAmid a shifting crypto landscape, regulatory structures in the UAE are continuing to evolve. At the federal level, the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) supervises virtual asset services, while the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) oversees payment tokens. The Dubai International Financial Centre and the Abu Dhabi Global Market operate their own frameworks. Last month, the SCA and VARA introduced a cooperation framework to harmonize oversight and allow mutual recognition of licenses, though the system stops short of automatic passporting in order to preserve national security controls. In related developments, the National Bank of Ras Al Khaimah (RAKBANK) became the first bank in the UAE to partner with Bitpanda Technology Solutions, a Vienna-based crypto exchange and digital assets infrastructure provider. The partnership, which builds on earlier work exploring the issuance of digital payment tokens, is expected to give RAKBANK customers access to a variety of crypto use cases.

Philippine government introduces document notarization on Polygon

In the Philippines, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has introduced an on-chain system utilizing the Ethereum layer-2 network Polygon to notarize and track documentation and the expenditure of public funds. The government contracted Manila-headquartered blockchain technology company BayaniChain Ventures in order to implement the system. The firm took to social media on July 31 to provide details on the DBM Blockchain Project.Photo by GuerrillaBuzz on UnsplashBuilding trust into infrastructureBayaniChain Ventures CEO Paul Soliman outlined that the new system “builds trust into the infrastructure itself.” The DBM Blockchain Project connects a DBM internal platform, the Action Document Releasing System (ADRS), which creates official budget documentation, with the Lumen Blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS) system created by BayaniChain.  Lumen functions as a core framework, enabling government systems to connect securely with blockchain infrastructure. Consequently, Lumen facilitates the tokenization of government documents, managing access to those documents and publishing data to a portal. A third system, Prismo Protocol, interacts with Lumen and ADRS, determining what documentation should be shared with the public and what documentation should remain accessible exclusively to DBM staff. The upshot of the interaction of these systems is that select budget documentation is published to the Polygon blockchain. Soliman stated that the system provides transparency, enabling members of the public to “see proof, not just promises” with regard to the activity of the government department. Integrating blockchain into public governanceThe Undersecretary at DBM, Maria Francesca Montes Del Rosario, took to Facebook on July 30 to confirm that the DBM blockchain initiative had gone live. She described it as the “first ever Transparency Government Blockchain for immutable and verifiable action documents.” She added: “We are using cutting edge technology like AI, blockchain, satellite imaging to enhance how we do public policy and governance.”Del Rosario was quoted by local media as stating that the technology combats the problem of AI deepfakes and fake documents. Another stakeholder in the development of the system was Exakt IT Services, a local company that specializes in assisting government organizations in the Philippines to bring about digital transformation. Exakt was awarded a contract by DBM to act as a technology partner, supporting the project with technical expertise and infrastructure in order to bring about the implementation of the blockchain solution. BayaniChain’s Soliman believes that the new system “sets a precedent for transparency and accountability in public finance.” However, the timing of the launch of the service proved to be unfortunate, as it coincided with an outage suffered by the Polygon network. The outage, which lasted for one hour, disrupted apps running on Polygon. On X, Polygon CEO and Founder Sandeep Nailwal asserted that the incident didn’t prevent the blockchain from operating or producing blocks and with that, user transactions on the network were still being processed. In better news for the blockchain network, Crypto Analyst Lennaert Snyder reported on July 31 that Polygon has reached a yearly high of $1.2 billion in total value locked (TVL), an 80% increase since March.
