A space for creativity and monetization

The Sandbox is a global metaverse platform that allows users to easily create and participate in games, avatars, and items. It also provides free three-dimensional content creation tools called VoxEdit and Game Maker, and users can monetize their content. It has partnered with over 400 major companies, including Netmarble, LINE Studio, Ubisoft, and Zynga, securing some five million subscribers worldwide. “We expect that users will be able to enjoy a new Web3 experience within the metaverse, where they can create their own content,” said Max Minchul Shin, CEO of Burrito Wallet.

Elevating the metaverse experience

Through the new partnership, Burrito Wallet will support wallet integration within The Sandbox’s platform by unifying the on-chain experience across services. Burrito Wallet users will thus have more convenient access to various content within The Sandbox, including LAND — the platform’s virtual real estate space for interacting and showcasing creativity — as well as personalized avatars and assets, and an NFT marketplace. Additionally, the company plans to enhance wallet utility by supporting the multi-chain functionality of SAND, The Sandbox’s utility token.

“Our partnership with Burrito Wallet will make it easier and more convenient for users to enjoy The Sandbox,” said Cindy Lee, CEO of The Sandbox Korea.

“We will continue to collaborate with companies from various fields to advance the Web3 market and establish ourselves as a distinguished wallet service in the global market,” Shin added.

Rotonda’s global initiatives

Rotonda is actively collaborating with global projects to promote the mass adoption of Web3 and blockchain technology. Last month, it launched the iOS version of Burrito Wallet in a move to expand availability for Web3 users on all operating systems. The company also recently co-hosted Next Block 2023 with its parent company Bithumb to promote business collaboration and build an ecosystem for accelerating Web3 projects.

Japan’s finance minister acknowledges crypto investment merits

Katsunobu Katō, a Liberal Democratic Party politician and Japan's Minister of Finance under Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's government since October 2024, has said that cryptocurrency assets can play a role in a diversified investment portfolio. Katō made the remarks while speaking at an event that was held in Tokyo related to the subject of crypto assets on Aug. 25, according to Bloomberg. Katō stated:''Crypto assets run the risk of high volatility, but if an appropriate investment environment is created, they can become targets for diversified investment.''Photo by JJ Ying on UnsplashGrowing crypto user baseKatō acknowledged that there is a growing user base in Japan related to digital assets. With that, he intends to work towards the provision of a healthy trading environment in Japan for stakeholders within the digital assets sector. The finance minister added that he has been trying to balance regulation with a need to leave the digital assets sector with sufficient freedom so as to enable the development of innovation. Crypto tax reformIt emerged over the weekend that the Japanese financial regulator, the Financial Services Agency (FSA), intends to include tax reform measures in respect of the crypto sector in 2026 tax revision proposals that it will bring to the Japanese government. It’s expected that the proposals, scheduled for submission by the end of this month, will call for a separate taxation category for digital assets and the implementation of a flat 20% tax rate. Under Japan’s existing tax regimen, crypto trading gains must be reported under the categorization of “miscellaneous income,” with those gains subject to tax rates of up to 55%. The move would bring taxation on crypto trading gains in line with the tax treatment that’s currently in place for equity trading gains. Equities have been given their own category and are taxed at a flat rate of 20%. Reclassifying cryptocurrenciesAdditionally, the FSA plans to propose legislation next year that would result in the reclassification of cryptocurrencies, removing them from their current treatment as a means of payment under the Payment Services Act. The regulator wants crypto to come under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, reclassifying it as a financial product. Katō has outlined his party’s commitment to the consideration of reviewing crypto asset taxation. That item was incorporated into his government’s tax reform plan for 2025, while the Japanese cabinet approved a proposal to amend the Payment Services Act back in March. As part of plans to have digital assets categorized as financial products, the FSA is also understood to be interested in broadening the scope of insider trading restrictions. Kato’s remarks are being interpreted as positive for the crypto sector. According to International Monetary Fund (IMF) data, Japan is the world’s fifth-largest economy, with a gross domestic product (GDP) exceeding $4.1 trillion.Source: World Economic Outlook (April 2025)In further positive news for the sector in Japan, it was reported on Aug. 18 that the FSA is likely to approve the issuance of JPYC, a Japanese yen-backed stablecoin, over the course of the coming months.

Axie Infinity Moves Further Mainstream with App Store Release

Axie Infinity Moves Further Mainstream with App Store ReleaseThe developer of Axie Infinity, one of Asia’s most iconic Web3 projects to date, has released a version of its latest game on Apple’s App Store.Photo by James Yarema on UnsplashGame adoption strategyAxie Infinity’s Origins game is a card-based strategy game that allows players to collect, own and use a limitless variety of creatures to take into combat. Sky Mavis, the Singapore-headquartered developer behind Axie Infinity, has taken an interesting approach to bring about adoption for what will ultimately be a Web3 game.Initially, the game was launched on iOS with zero Web3 aspects to it. NFTs will not feature. Players will be given free non-NFT “starter characters.” That’s an entirely different approach to the one employed on the original Axie Infinity game. In that instance, players had to acquire NFT-based characters, by either renting or buying them, in order to participate in the game from the outset. While those starter characters will remain non-NFT in nature, the plan is to facilitate players in purchasing NFT-based characters at a later stage, as they progress within the game. Axie Infinity Co-Founder and COO Aleksander Leonard Larsen explained the strategy in an interview with Decrypt:“Starter Axies will remain as non-NFTs, but eventually as people buy other Axies in app we will want [to] turn them into NFTs.”App Store listingIt appears that the firm has been working on an Apple App Store listing for quite some time already. Larsen explained: “We have been in touch with Apple for about two years now, after a lot of trial and error, the current version is a lite version of Axie Origins with more to follow.”In a social media post, the project confirmed the significance of the listing: “We believe this is the first time that Apple has agreed to make an externally-purchased NFT usable on the App Store.” The initial step to getting listed on the large application platforms started out with a feature-limited Origins listing on the Malaysian version of the Google PlayStore in December 2022, before getting listed on that platform on a broader basis. The project outlined that it was following a similar strategy with Apple. This release will see the Axie Infinity Origin game listed on the Apple App Store relative to the following markets: Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Venezuela, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. The expectation is that the game will be listed in more territories as matters progress.Token price increaseAs the game runs on Sky Mavis’s Ronin network, an Ethereum sidechain, players who own Axie NFTs will still be able to utilize them in gameplay via the iOS version. The significance of the listing wasn’t lost on Axie Infinity community members. The unit price of the Axie Infinity Shards ($AXS) token, a governance token for the Axie Infinity gaming ecosystem, increased by 8% on Wednesday.Axie has proven to be a standout Web3 project for the Asian region. Axie’s developer, Sky Mavis is headquartered in Singapore although the project first emerged via its Vietnam-based development team. The original Axie game, which captured the imagination of crypto-enthusiasts more so than traditional gamers due to its ‘play-to-earn’ model, really came into its own during the pandemic. In particular, the game garnered a lot of adoption in the Philippines due to the opportunity it presented to Filipinos to earn tokens as a result of gameplay.
