Com2uS USA CEO Highlights Importance of Transition from Web2 to Web3 Gaming

Web3 & Enterprise·September 06, 2023, 9:28 AM

Lee Kyu-chang, CEO of South Korean game developer Com2uS’ American branch, stressed the important role of Web3 games in encouraging gamers to embrace blockchain technology during a discussion at the Korea Blockchain Week (KBW) 2023 event held at the Shilla Hotel in Seoul on Tuesday.

Lee shared various insights on the topic that Com2uS Group has gained through its experience in developing blockchain games. “We view blockchain not as a platform but as a tool,” he said.

Nurturing Web3 adoption among gamers

In particular, the CEO emphasized the need for Web2 users to transition to Web3. Indeed, Com2uS is aiming to migrate to Web3, although it is still majorly involved in Web2 businesses.

However, there stands a roadblock to achieving this widespread transition. “Gamers do not understand Web3. What they want is for good games to be released. And if they’re not good, they won’t play them regardless of whether they’re Web2 or Web3,” Lee explained, arguing that fun Web3 games will have gamers naturally learning about Web3.

Due to these reasons, the conversion rate for gamers is currently quite low. To remedy this, Lee proposed that facilitating the transition for Web2 gamers to Web3 is a more sustainable method than directly targeting only Web3 users. The latter strategy is not ideal due to the fact that there aren’t many Web3 users yet in the first place, and more importantly, existing ones are not typically gamers.

Balancing the shift

The Com2uS Group has thus chosen to concentrate on Web2 while gradually transitioning to Web3. “We must remember that the transition is slow. We went through a similar process when shifting from PC to mobile gaming,” Lee cautioned.

“Our company’s mission is to make people want to play games with ownership rights and make them want to own game assets.”

Hana Financial Group bets on stablecoins and AI as crypto adoption surges in South Korea

Hana Financial Group, one of South Korea’s largest financial institutions, plans to establish a new task force focused on digital assets, according to a report by News1. The move comes as the cryptocurrency market continues to expand and institutional adoption grows worldwide.Photo by POURIA 🦋 on UnsplashGroupwide crypto task forceThe company intends to use the task force to develop a coordinated response system linking its banking, card, and securities subsidiaries. It also plans to introduce crypto-related products, services, and infrastructure in line with forthcoming legislation on digital assets. As its first initiative, the task force will focus on stablecoin-related projects, including issuance and reserve management. Another key objective is to build a merchant network that enables customers to make payments using stablecoins. Beyond its crypto initiatives, Hana Financial Group also aims to expand the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to advance its digital finance capabilities. Ongoing AI research at the Hana Institute of Technology will serve as the foundation for integrating AI across the group’s subsidiaries, with a particular focus on enhancing sales divisions. Commenting on the initiative, Chairman Ham Young-joo said the group will strengthen its capabilities in both crypto and AI, underlining the transformative potential of digital assets in capital markets and payment networks. Paycoin expands retail acceptanceThe rising adoption of cryptocurrencies in South Korea is reflected in Paycoin’s (PCI) recent expansion into the convenience store chain Emart24. Operated by Danal Fintech, the blockchain affiliate of Danal, Paycoin now allows customers to make purchases with its PCI tokens at Emart24 locations, according to a report by Etoday. With 7-Eleven scheduled to start accepting PCI later this month, the digital asset will soon be usable across all four major convenience store chains in the country, joining CU and GS25, which already support it. Building on this momentum, Paycoin aims to expand its utility across a wider range of sectors, including restaurants, sports facilities, shopping malls, and accommodations. The platform has already established a presence at well-known eateries such as Domino’s and Pizza Hut, as well as at Dal.Komm, Danal’s coffee chain. Market manipulation probesHowever, the growing acceptance of digital assets has also brought side effects—specifically, a rise in crypto-related crimes. Amid stricter oversight, South Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) has voted to refer alleged cryptocurrency market manipulators to law enforcement. The decision concerns two separate cases, Edaily reported. In the first case, a suspect is accused of generating illicit profits by artificially inflating the price of a particular cryptocurrency. The individual reportedly accumulated tokens worth billions of Korean won before placing a series of sell orders at higher prices. Using an application programming interface (API), the suspect repeatedly executed these orders, prompting ordinary investors to buy in and drive prices even higher—ultimately securing profits for the manipulator. The second case involves multiple individuals accused of employing similar methods across various tokens. They allegedly used APIs to automate trades, creating false impressions of high trading volumes and inflated prices to reap unlawful gains. These developments offer a broader view of how South Korea’s nascent digital asset industry is taking shape. The growing presence of cryptocurrencies in everyday life reflects Seoul’s push to align with the global trend of embracing crypto as both a new payment method and an emerging asset class. While crime prevention and investor protection remain key concerns, forthcoming legislation is expected to give regulators clearer guidelines. Ranked 15th worldwide in crypto adoption in this year’s Chainalysis study, South Korea continues to stand out as a market that merits close attention from investors and industry observers alike.

Yunfeng Financial buys 10K ETH as Hong Kong firms deepen push into digital assets

Yunfeng Financial Group has purchased 10,000 Ethereum (ETH) on the open market for $44 million, the Hong Kong–listed fintech said in a Sept. 2 statement. The company described the move as part of a broader plan to increase exposure to digital assets, joining firms such as Bitmine Immersion Technologies and SharpLink Gaming that have incorporated ETH into corporate treasuries.Photo by DrawKit Illustrations on UnsplashETH backs RWA strategy, inflation hedgeThe acquisition follows Yunfeng’s July outline to expand into Web3, real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, artificial intelligence, and ESG-linked assets aimed at net-zero goals. Yunfeng said ETH could support its Web3 and RWA businesses, help optimize assets, and provide a hedge against traditional currencies. It is also exploring ways to incorporate ETH into insurance products. The RWA market has grown in recent months, with on-chain RWAs totaling $28.19 billion at the time of publication, up 7.37% from a month earlier, according to data from RWA.xyz. Yunfeng noted it may adjust the size of its ETH reserves in line with market conditions, regulation, and its financial position. The company said the purchase falls below Hong Kong Stock Exchange disclosure thresholds: all five percentage ratios—assets, profits, revenue, consideration, and equity capital—remain under 5%. It stated it will meet disclosure requirements if future transactions push holdings beyond the relevant limits. Institutions drive ETH momentumThe announcement comes amid heightened interest in ETH. CryptoRank data show a 30% year-to-date price increase, and Tom Lee, Fundstrat’s head of research and chair of BitMine, has forecast a near-term range of $4,000 to $5,450. He argued that Ethereum is well placed to serve institutional use cases, pointing to its role in hosting more than half of the roughly $250 billion stablecoin supply and its prominence in asset tokenization. Hong Kong continues to position itself as a regional hub for blockchain and digital assets despite Mainland China’s 2021 ban on crypto trading. In a separate development, Fosun Wealth Holdings launched tokenized shares of Sisram Medical, an Israeli med-tech company listed in Hong Kong. The tokens, representing about $328 million in market value, were deployed across Vaulta, Solana (SOL), Ethereum, and Sonic. Fosun said it plans to tokenize additional corporate bonds and shares, without naming issuers or setting a timeline. Other local companies have also disclosed crypto exposure. Linekong Interactive Group reported holdings of 92.07 BTC, 943.63 ETH, and 6,091.7 SOL as of June 30 after purchases in the first half of the year, with cumulative unrealized gains of roughly $7.5 million. Linekong said it views crypto as a long-term investment and may increase its holdings pending board and shareholder approval.

Animoca founder: $200T crypto market within 10 years

The global cryptocurrency market is poised for unprecedented growth, potentially reaching $200 trillion within a decade, according to Yat Siu, co-founder of Animoca Brands, a prominent Hong Kong-based Web3 game software company and venture capital firm. 2-3x within 18 monthsCurrently valued at approximately $2.7 trillion according to data from crypto aggregator CoinGecko, the cryptocurrency market is set to double or triple in the near term, Siu predicted on The Valr Podcast on May 28. “In the near term — within 12 to 18 months — we can conceive of a doubling or tripling of the space,” he stated, expressing strong confidence in the industry's future milestones. Siu elaborated on his bold forecast, suggesting that over a five to ten-year period, the market could accelerate by 100 to 200 times, potentially reaching a valuation of $200 trillion or even higher. In conversation with Farzam Ehsani, the co-founder of Valr, a platform that allows users to buy, sell, store and transfer crypto assets, Siu said:“I think we could reach that kind of number within a decade.” This explosive growth, according to Siu, will be driven by billions of people becoming digital property owners within the Web3 ecosystem. Siu stated: “It is entirely conceivable that we’re going to have a billion property owners because we’re going to have a billion token holders. This is not possible in the physical world.”Photo by Pierre Borthiry - Peiobty on UnsplashAsia fastest growing marketSiu also pointed out the regional dynamics within the Web3 space, noting that Asia has emerged as the fastest-growing market. “Right now, the leading force in Web3 is clearly Asia,” he argued, citing robust adoption rates in regions such as Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Japan. In contrast, jurisdictions like the United States are lagging behind, primarily due to regulatory uncertainties. Siu pointed out that historically, the United States has tended to take a leadership role where new technology is concerned. Web3 is turning out to be the exception to that rule. With that, he thinks that it is Asia that will lead the way and that it will continue to lead for the foreseeable future where Web3 is concerned. Bullish on BitcoinHis optimism about the Web3 market's potential aligns with his bullish stance on Bitcoin, currently standing at a market capitalization of $1.3 trillion. Siu made another bold prediction recently, expressing confidence that Bitcoin would eventually reach $1 million. At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading at $68,346. While that’s far from his $1 million unit price prediction, he did state at Web Summit Rio in April that it would do so “over time.”  That bullishness from the Animoca founder has also manifested itself within the company itself. In early May, the company announced its entry into the Bitcoin ecosystem by endorsing the Opal Foundation, a Bitcoin-centric protocol. At the time, Siu suggested that Bitcoin is now primed for Web3. Siu's projections reflect a broader optimism in the cryptocurrency industry, where rapid technological advancements and increasing adoption rates are expected to drive significant growth. As more individuals and institutions embrace digital assets, the potential for exponential market expansion becomes increasingly plausible.
